many woods can be used and high quality one can be like cengal, nyatoh or kampung wood like tembusu etc

can go to melamine board (chipboard) if your budget is tight.

how do we calculate for table top? does it count by the length of table? what if there's a drawer or door for bottom cabinet?

Table Top is calculated by ft length
For base unit, if it's concrete table top ppl will do door only. By the way, some ppl do "partition" inside to make it become "two layer" then you have more space to store your things.
