lately i've been eating more to gain some bulk. lots of meats and stuff. i recently measured with some machine called omron. dont know whether the measurements can be trusted. the readings were 6 for my visceral fat when the person said 2-3 is what a normal man at my age (24) , should have. anyone experienced this before?

its like a weighing scale. u stand on it and hold a bar which is with the machine. then it calculates ur body fat, body weight, bmi and visceral fat. 2-3 is a scale. it is supposed to be for a normal man wherelse my readings were at 6. so that means my body has too much visceral fat.

Omron is actually the brand,
they have several models,
my ex company used to sell that
they measure our fat % and VF by currents going thru our body
frm leg to hand if not mistaken
thats why whn u use the machine, ur hand have to be 90 degrees in front
btw
i forgotten abt the VF optimum measurement
but look wat i found
http://www.tanita.co.uk/index.php?id=28
so 1-12 is still low risk
if u wan other calculation can use the waist to hip ratio
http://www.healthbulletin.org/weight_loss/weight29.htm
teach u how to reduce ur VF too....

thanks for that. one more thing, does strength training help to reduce VF or only cardio can reduce it?

muscle does burn fat (in general). but cardio burn VF faster. My friend managed to reduce VF so much (1 - 2) just by jogging on daily basis.

see ur target bro..

Ordinary ppl..not to say at optimal VF, are usually at 6-10..those normal body type, no gym, not fat, not lean..

So if ure targeting for good abs, lean and shredded..aim for VF 1..diet plays the vital role..

Those online personal trainer with good looking abs, lean shredded are usually at 1..

I always wonder how accurate those machines are.
If i drink say 5 cups more water the day before does the reading change?

If the machine is the BEI kind (using electric with handles), yes. Even if you drank a 1.5 litre of plain water can increase your fat percentage. BEI is greatly depended on amount of water inside our body. So, the best practices would be:
1. Drink a cold 1.5 litre of plain water (you need to drink the same amount of water with the same coldness everytime you want to take measurement)
2. Take a piss and a dump.
3. 30 minutes after step 1, then start measuring.
