By default, everything to iCloud. Simply put, if your IP4 is 32Gb model, and all your apps, data (music, video, docs, etc) are 30Gb (means your IP4 left 2Gb free space). You will need at least 30Gb of iCloud storage to backup everything.

Yes, u can select what to backup and what not to backup. But correct me if I m wrong guys, my understanding is like iCloud takes over your itunes in your local PC's role. U can only choose whether to sync with iCloud or sync with iTunes (local PC), not both. And if you select sync with iCloud, and you choose things (can be apps, can be contacts, calendar, data, etc) not to sync. Then the things u choose not to sync will be lost from your IP4 as well.

Example, when I choose sync with iCloud and later choose 'OFF' in Contact synching, all my contacts in my phone is lost.

These are what I found out...I might be wrong, coz still meddling with it. Guys, do comment n share your experience.

And yes, u can download the IPSW and update the offline method. To be safer, I'd recommend choose "Download Only" instead of "Download and Install" for better success rate.

Don't worry on whether or not to update all Apps first or later. Some apps that require IOS5 to work will prompt you so. U can download but when installing, the app will tell u that u can only install after u update your IOS.

For my case, I ensure all my apps are current before updating my IOS4.3.5 to IOS5. Then once running IOS5, iApps tells me I have an update to one of my apps which is Facebook apps, I then download n install it. All is fine...

I am running non-jailbreaked IP4 if you must know. Not sure if it has anything to do with it.

You'll need high speed WIFI network to backup properly.

CAUTION : For those using 3G broadband with quota (like 1Gb data package) beware that the iCloud sync takes up a lot of data transfer. Example, if your IP4 is 32Gb and is fully used up. The backup data transfer will also take up that amount of utilisation. If you did not purchase additional iCloud space, default is also 5Gb, you would have blown your 1Gb data package with it.

Is that even possible? I mean, the IPSW installation includes the baseband. Not even sure if the IOS5 will work with the old baseband.

You may be right, I remember I read somewhere that purchases won't even be considered in the 5Gb free space. But the thing is most of my medias (music & videos) are imported via my original CDs & DVDs. I seldom or even can say never purchase musics from itunes before. Which means, all my medias WILL take up the 5Gb space. And I m sure I speak for the majority users here as well

Actually, your device (ip4, ipad, whatever that runs IOS5) coupled with iCloud, u will never need iTunes (local PC) anymore. It's independent with the cloud.

I m experiencing heavy network traffic (streamyx) since last night. Might be the case as well. Guys,, u wanna try restarting your modems to get better IP range for faster download.

Question...How come everytime I change my sync setting like tick sync pictures..then sync then later untick sync pictures n Apply again...

Everytime that is done, the itunes n ip4 will re-sync all my videos? I got like 74 vids and the sync took helluva time....

You can backup to itunes before updating to IOS5. By default, itunes will do that (full backup) for you b4 update. But this only applies to un-JB devices. On JB devices and so happened those apps u mentioned are from JB sources, good luck then...

Bro, your case is normal, i mean once u untick the sync photos, all your previously synced pics in your iphone will be gone after the next sync....

My case is apart from the above mentioned happening, it also sync my videos...which i have no idea why....never done that to me b4 IOS5.

Did u try "Restore" function from your itunes (local PC)?

Weird, why so many people update with so many different outcome? Guess I must be very lucky, got it on first try and all restored in good order.

Only problem I face is Contacts lost but sync again with itunes and got it back. Then the video files keep re-synching everytime i change some sync settings although no change on the videos.

Last resort is uninstall the itunes, restart your computer, install a new 10.5 itunes. Import back all your medias, sync your idevice, full backup your idevice, then update IOS5.

Most probably, your friends' due to corrupt IPSW. Manually remove the IPSW file, re-download the IOS5 IPSW, then update again. your friend's backup is still intact rite?

Read and download the original IOS5 IPSW from here

Then do a offline update.

I think u gotta do a full restore liau. The one where u switch off your ipad, then press home button + top button together till u see "connect to itunes" graphics on your ipad. Make sure u got a new IPSW b4 doing the full restore...coz I suspect your current IPSW is corrupted thus causing the black screen thingy.
