We need to be in reality. That's what happening to the photography culture at the moment. Many people (but not all) thought they could produce the same quality given they're using the same gears. Even better photos when they're on better gears. We certainly need to straighten this out. I'm not saying you or anyone is one, but we shouldn't lack or only focusing in gears than building own skills. That should be what counts the most before even better gears. My 2 cents
You shouldn't compare different type of lenses like that. Each that you mentioned above has different focal lengths and arguably different superiority in different situation. I would suggest you to look at what you need than what you can afford.

portrait lens you can use 70-300mm,
shooting at 200mm i can quite assure you have nice outcome 

oh, u got D5100...
then just go get the 50mm 1.8G.

longer reach for portrait, uhhh 55-300mm and stand far far back.
remember to buy walkie talkies also

Actually, I think I developed different style when I started using different lens and gears... From D90 --> D700, lens of different ranges.. my style changed since I first shooting...
Portrait lens is a well... I think it is more of a bokeh lens LOL. But, wide angles, zoom lens etc all can do portrait as well, just without the bokeh subject isolation.
Used the Canon mount on 7D, seems pretty good IMO.

If you are referring to the subject isolation aka bokeh, no way. . Even the 70200 VR2 only comes close, but the bokeh a little diff. One is due to big aperture, f/1.4, another is the focal length, 200mm.

Just FYI, my 70200 VR2 AF died just before warranty ended. And its a pro grade Nikkor lens too! Sometimes its just luck...
I use 70200 f/2.8 and shoot close to f/22 at times also la...

Not exactly flat I would say, its a little different. I prefer the 85mm on FX. Due to the distance differences, it yield different bokeh. Go closer and it won't be as 'flat' as you think
Sometimes the highlights might drive you crazy... taking attention away from your subject 

why dont want nikon 70-300vr?

i never tried tamron, and not too fond of 3rd party, but i been happy with 70-300VR.
i got a 70-200VR2 now, but im still keeping the 70-300

these were with the 70-300VR.
mostly at or near 300mm.


at night, the AF speed suffers abit due to the f/5.6 at 300mm, but its still do-able if u know what ur doing...if i had a D3s then diff story

sure got not sharp one if you extend to 300mm f/5.6 ...and that time i using D70s.

duno, i used few times with 70-300 non VR lens....
VR one i duno, i never use that...test a bit in nikon center for 1-2 minutes before but still can't tell difference haha..

70-200 no doubt good, but kind of tele for dx. And high price too.

Maybe 55-300 is better thab 55-200 but then is that extra 100 really neccesary in dx? It depends, but most likely not.

Prime lens for street photography really good. Makes u take the courage to shoot infront of ppl.

Get 50mm la.just right. Not too clse not too far. In fact I like it better thna 35mm
