Just checked, the GT635M ones have USB3.0.
So there's a high probability that the GT630M one has it as well (but then are you really going to pay more for less?) brows.gif .

I was very keen on the i5 variant of the S300... until Lenovo Malaysia decided to mess it up by bringing the lowest end variant here sad.gif

i honestly dunno why all these computer/IT companies decide to shit all over us in the malaysia when it comes to their products, always choosing to release their shttiest models all the time.

Well, based on what I've heard, many brands do conduct preliminary surveys and from there, decide which type of products will have demand, and which won't hmm.gif

I guess most brands see Malaysian consumers as those who want "cheap and big" products only sweat.gif

You need to provide more details laugh.gif
But let's make some assumption.
12 years old should not carry too heavy, so may be 13 to 14" should be sufficient.
12 years old boy will play game, if dad allow tongue.gif Nothing too intensive I hope. (Sorry, boy or girl? You use his and her.)
1st laptop, but may have used PC before? Kids learn fast, so Win8 should not be any problem.
Dad is not very IT literate. Better get something with good warranty support.

Try this:
Lenovo 14"
G480, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB (5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899, 4GB, 1TB (5400rpm), W8, 2 yrs warranty

Those with Nvidia GPU handle game much better. i3 is less powerful than i5, but should be sufficient for kids. FreeDos version mean you need to get Win OS yourself. Microsoft do give good discount to student. Price is RSP, you can negotiate for much better deal smile.gif Upgrade to 2-3 year on-site warranty (cost < RM200), so that if any hardware problem, Lenovo will send technician to your friend house to fix the laptop.
Search the LYN garage sales forum, you will find plenty of reputable sellers selling this model. PM them to negotiate nod.gif

If it's a girl who prefer something more cute and trendy:
Acer 11.6"
Aspire V5-171-53312G50s, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000@RM1799, 2GB, 500GB, W8

Asus 11.6"
Eee PC 1225B, E-450 + AMD HD6320M + (1366x768)@RM1259[1.45kg], W7S; colors: Red/Silver/Black
VivoBook X200E-CT009H, i3-3217U + Intel UMA + (1366x768; touch)@RM1599[1.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W8

Specs not as powerful as the Lenovo G480 with i5 and Nvidia GPU. Acer and ASUS warranty support is not as good as Lenovo (ASUS is particularly iffy sweat.gif ).
The VivoBook has touchscreen, and utilise the Win8 latest user interface very well. Definitely the coolest among the bunch laugh.gif

Actually yes, I went back to the shop to check, it is the 535 model but they have upgraded the processor to A8 (quad core) rather than the A6 in the link. Price wise is MYR2299 in Kuching, definately can get cheaper in KL. No review yet anywhere.
