 Getting a Datsun 120y, For free :)

Hi all lyn sifu's !

My grandfather just bought himself a new car and he wants to give his old Datsun 120y to me. He's a mechanic so no need to worry about the engine. The engine is in pristine condition and everything else is also in very good condition. (no need repair anything. Just get it and drive).

So, im planning to convert this car's engine into a better one (1.8L / 2.0L). I would like to know where can i find an engine which is suitable for this car ? And also, is fitting turbo to this car a good idea ?

As for the interior, there's some leaking problems. If i changed the rubber seals for the doors, trunk etc., would this problem be solved ?

I also want to know that is there any shops in sunway that do custom seats ? I want mine to be leather wrapped.

if not mistaken 120y is 1.3 engine?

if u install 1.8/2.0 for sure its illegal and worst of all ur chasis wont able to take the pressure.....

120y is 1.2L
love this car very much.
even with 1.2L it can take down iswara 1.3 easilly with it super handling and torgue.

please give it to me it u dont want it/.

120y is 1200cc engine

it's illegal if u don't register it at jpj, FYI, a lot of ppl say cannot register because 1.2 upgrade to 1.8 or 2.0 is more than 25% cubic capacity set by jpj, but this is totally wrong, i've seen 120y with CA18 and SR20 successfully registered, but the runner fees won't be cheap, prepare RM1300 to 1500 just for the puspakom inspection and jpj registration.

TS, if u have around or more than 6k budget, u can opt for CA18det, budget = or more than 9k go for SR20det, google if u don't know what engines they are.

if u have only 4k then below is doable (GA16de sentra engine + datsun 210 gearbox or other car's gearbox that can fit. i don't know whether they sell halfcuts of the Nissan Serena GA16de in Malaysia or not, if u can find one, then it's a RWD transmission):

if u don't want nissan engine, then the toyota 16valve from the AE86 can fit, it's cheap nowadays but it's very old

if u don't care about FC or maintenance, u can even put in a Mazda B13 Rotary engine, which is MAD!

but most important of all, like vinothrao84 said, make sure you strengthen your chassis first, or else, u'll split your car in half if too much power

this kind of conversions are not hard, u need to have lot's of spare cash, and lots of patience, and the result is very rewarding. You probably can give your 120y to your children and they can still use it as a daily drive after your project is completed

HEI, this 120y is famous for its low fc engine n big strong bumper. only the interior quite noisy. engine better than saga. silent..

i didn't know 120y is famous for the bumper... did you mistaken that for the sunny 130Y?

old nissan engine revs is very very nice to listen... even with stock exhaust, engine note itself is lovely... unlike engine nowadays, rev higher abit feels like gonna explode anytime... doh.gif

120Y 4 speed excellent spec has the chrome bumper

but u have to watch out as 120Y is made before they had advanced metal electroplating tech available.. the sunny 130Y (d one w/absorber bumper) got this tech.. 120Y tarak so a lot were decommissioned due to it being a rust bucket

One thing good about this 1977-era machine.. brakes are very good, stronger than the LMSS potong saga.

i've used a datsun before in the mid 90's. Transplanted a vannete 1.5 engine n 5 speed gb. Low fc and can easily travel at 140km/j on exspressway. used to travel kl-jb quite often. very very reliable car

Just wondering, which 120Y r u referring to? Theres
- B210 (aka Excellent, round headlamps, raised rear wit rear leaf springs)
- B310 (round/square front lamps, small full exposed chromed bumper or big bumpers with built in absorbers, 4 or 5 speed manual, mayb airconditioned, rear coil springs)

If u got d B210, ppl normall keep it in ori condition coz of d classic design, rather rust prone panels n leaf suspension tat needs upgrading for more power n handling.

If its d B310, my main concerns would b
- chassis strengthening n brake upgrades
- engine availability. Modders usually use SR16/18 DE/DET or 4AGE from d older AE86 but it will need major paperwork 'lubang'. Otherwise d standard A15 engine from Vanette should fit nicely wit minor mods. d short throw gear change should b nice for pick ups too.
- rusts. My family has tis model n d under carriage area below d doors r prone to rust even after numerous times or panel replacement.
- water leaks. Ours have good condition rubber seals but until now water still continues to leak in into d front foot wells. Same issue wit our older B110 n suspect its coming in s'where above d firewall.

can get a15 off from vanette c22 van with 5 speed gb and later top it with some weber and 4-1 plus a regrind cam
or wanted newer engine can go for ca18 or sr20 either turbo or n/a depend on your budget with gearbox prefered
or 4age with t50 gb olso can
depend on your budget
my recomend go for a15
put in some old skol brows.gif
btw jpj not very strict in ca18 or sr20 transplant on a datto
jpj on strict on proton platform

which 120Y did you get? the B210 or B310? the b310 has 2 versions. one with round headlights then the later model came with the square headlights and the model just before the sunny 130Y had absorber bumpers. both have the same 1171cc engine. post a picture lah.

keep it classic bro, you are fortunate u have a pristine 120y, i still looking for 1 to keep.

don't do too much modification, overhaul the engine, make it look like just came out from the factory.

and here is malaysia . and most here do engine conversion jpj issue are done using jpj runner

the letter of approval is by their superior so who are those to question the approval letter ?

of course it's illegal, UNTIL JPJ APPROVES THE CONVERSION, and it CAN BE APPROVED because there are so many 120y with SR20det out there that is LEGAL ON THE ROAD and I have seen their car grants by my own eyes. U disagree with me because either you don't have anybody around with this kind of LEGAL conversions or you WANT to do this kind of mod but failed the JPJ registration due to the fact that your runner is rubbish doing his job

CA18det of course is out of production, but if u know where to find parts they still got a lot of it, this includes 4age 16valve, and they ARE CHEAP if u know where to look, just like CA18det, many ppl already discarded them and focus on newer engines like the blacktop and SR series

I'm sorry for not replying to this thread as i was back in my hometown for raya and i forgot to bring my broadband along.

Thanks for all your comments. After reading all one by one, i've made my mind NOT to change the engine.

I've checked the engine condition and it's excellent so i thought why not use it.

I'm also dreaming to get my hands on a second hand proton wira so i guess i'll be selling this car.

So, anyone who needs this car can contact me. I'll open another thread in automotive garage for the sale of this car.

so why are u "dreaming" to get a wira? that's like saying u are "dreaming" to get Syphilis or AIDS or any kind of disease.

keep the datsun, keep the engine, uprade the brakes and chassis, get rid of the rusty parts, recond the interior and u'll have a sweet ride, much sweeter than the wira.

use the datsun until the ori engine becomes very problematic (which I think is highly unlikely, it probably will out live u if u take care of it). Then u can decide whether to change car or change engine

fyi, i already got a Wira. Yeah, i guess i wont be changing the engine. Malas wanna bring to jpj for inspection. (if i have to la)

I'm planning to do these. (give your opinions on these)

- re-do the interior.
- wrap all the seats with cover which looks like leather (imitation leather lah tongue.gif)
- Kenwood DVD player with slide in monitor (taken from my dad's waja ; he's using dual din kenwood now)
- window tints ( according to jpj specifications)
- lower the car
- get small rims like this ( Picture) Not exactly la but the rims would look like this.
- redo exhaust and make it twin exhaust.


What you think ??

intake manifold how to mod ?
original intake manifold thottle position facing gb leh
if flip the engine to north south configuration to suit rwd the thottle body sure facing firewall leh
unless u use sr20 rwd manufold lo
like 4age fwd 20valve not a direct pnp to ke70 or ae 86
need to relocated the distributor and intake manifold to face outward rather than firewall
