Wood frame houses are pretty forgiving. Screw up...no big deal. Just dismantle it and redo it. Unlike Malaysia's concrete with reinforce steel bars , brick and cement houses.

QUOTE(divine061 @ Dec 9 2013, 06:55 AM)

And naleh33, as I did mentioned, property booming and architectural work are totally different. Properties that change hand are second / third hand properties. Even if they buy it to knock down and rebuild, most people goes for project homes with standard design which does not require an architect. Even with customization, they are minimal that just require a draft man.

Why not??? You didn't notice that some western kids when they finished high school they started working for a year or 2 before heading to uni or technical institute??? Also during summer breaks, some were working jobs that were related to what they were studying???
One of my cousin was studying accounting. During summer breaks, she managed to secure jobs with accounting firms. Another cousin who studied Eng managed to find summer works with Eng firms.
Fresh grad....fresh...geddit. Boy you are very ignorant. Looks like towkay like you do not believe in hiring and train students during their holiday breaks. Pity Malaysian students

QUOTE(robertchoo @ Jan 1 2014, 12:15 PM)
What stupid logic? How can a fresh grad have experience? Or rather if a fresh grad has experience he won't be a fresh grad. Fresh grad...fresh...geddit?

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Dec 31 2013, 11:10 AM)

Are you one of those who think employers should only hire students with the best grades and work experience is irrelevant???
It's Xmas break. Was shopping in Chinatown recently. Guess what??? Tuition centres were open. There were young men/women. Must be Chinese or Asian beliefs to get a head start or get better grades. I kept wondering if work experiences ever cross their minds??? Do they think employers will hire people with little or no work experiences ???

Very indeed. Some employer really piss me off. I dunno wat's inside their brain, $hit?!? vmad.gif

Do you know the difference between living in OZ and living outside OZ??? If one lives outside OZ and trying to renew PR, the Immigration department will count the days

QUOTE(snoopdog17 @ Feb 4 2014, 12:25 AM)
Is it really cumulative? I highly doubt that. I have an uncle who is a pr and flys back to malaysia every year very often for business. He is still a pr btw. So whats your source?

Not only in OZ. The same thing is happening in UK Canada and US. Big banks made record profits and they are letting staff go outsourcing work
Maybe people should do what Canadians did. Last year Canada's largest bank,RBC(Royal Bank Canada) made the headlines. Despite making record profits, the bank laid off local workers and outsource work to India. A boycott campaign started and eventually the bank back down and 'rehired' the laid off workers

QUOTE(static @ May 4 2014, 11:29 AM)
+1 on banking. We've had 3 waves of redundancy so far for the past 3 years I'm with the bank. Quite scary as you won't see it coming at all, they have cut down on hiring permanent staff as well and would prefer contractors/fixed terms instead. Was on contract for 2 years (varies from 3, 4, 6 months to a year depending on project and workload).

You think OZ is the only developed country that has problem with naval ship building??? What about UK and Canada??? UK scraped it Upholder class submarines. Canada bought those submarine at 'bargain price' in the late 90s and rebranded them as Victoria class. Since then Canada has difficulty making the sub seaworthy.
As for navy supply ships, Canada shelved its own design and opted to buy Germany's FGS Bonn class ship. Tried, proven and already operational, rather then facing 'hiccups' as in the submarine fiasco

QUOTE(Value-Price @ May 4 2014, 01:45 PM)

Although Australia is a developed nation, they don't have strong technical skills, innovation or research. If you look at their defense projects, they struggle in building their own Collins-class submarine and Hobart-class destroyer. (Note: We struggle to build our Meko Class Patrol Vessel as well).

In some fields such as structural engineering, Malaysian engineers (graduated from overseas and exposed to mega projects in Malaysia) are miles ahead of Australia.

White collar jobs or blue collar jobs??? We Asians are brought up to look down on trades people. Could there be a mismatch?? Too many uni grads and not enough trades people???
Met some ex Malaysians and ex Bruneians at a restaurant during CNY dinner. They left in the early 80s. According to them, OZ is facing a severe shortage in trades people. Their companies also operate in OZ (oil and gas) and are willing to relocate employees(min 8 to 10 yrs experiences. Novices need not apply). Btw... they were instrumentation technicians... installing, testing and servicing

QUOTE(divine061 @ May 4 2014, 10:56 AM)
I concur with you that the job market had never been easy in Australia. and I understand your perspective and agree that from what you see, there are limited opportunities here in Australia.

Why hire architect to design house??? Incompetence or lack or creativity??? A few of my relatives in Canada designed their own houses using off the shelf software eg 3D home design. Upon coming up with a design, go to a home builder. Staff go over the plan, make modification to meet bylaw requirements , building code requirements etc etc. Finally the bottom line. If agree on the price, sign on the dotted line
Why hire a project manager for such a small project like building a house??? Yes site supervisor has the ultimate power. Malaysians mentality is not up to date

QUOTE(Nemesis1980 @ May 16 2014, 01:52 PM)

If you're looking for architect position, DO NOT COME TO PERTH! You'll starve till death coz they won't appoint architect to do the design. Draughtmen can survive and earn more than architect. If Project Manager coming here, he'll be dead as well coz no position for him. Site supervisor has the ultimate power here.
I conclude that WA is a kampung state which they don't require highly qualified ppl to serve them

Exactly. From my observation, in Canada, architects are involved in big projects...office towers, large multi family dwellings(aka condo /apartment tower), hospitals, schools, unique one of a kind buildings (car showrooms), refurbishing old hotels/old office towers where exterior façade is kept while interior is gutted and redesign, etc etc Architects don't get involve in small projects like designing house, strip mall, small walk up condo/apartment buildings(those 2 to 3 storeys). Of course there will be exception. eg a local billionaire hired an architect to design a one of a kind 20 000+ sq ft house

QUOTE(hihihehe @ May 17 2014, 12:38 PM)
most of the architect now focus on designing apartment. msot f my friends in melbourne are architect and they mostly taking care of apartment, showroom(car, etc), school, and even mcdonalds(for a company who got the contract). never really heard about houses

Could it be due to parents who have never paid a cent in taxes turning to into social services?/welfare for 'help' in large numbers??

Happening in Canada. Immigrants 'promised' to look after their parents/grandparents and not burden the taxpayers. Not long after getting their papers, many of them show up at social welfare dept. with sob stories Govt tighten the rules and guess what??? People still do it. Finally the govt had enough and tell would be sponsors....show me the money and the govt will put in trust. The moment parents/grandparents show up at social welfare dept, the govt will seize the money. Guess what?? Any surprised??? Why cry father cry mother

QUOTE(Nemesis1980 @ Jun 18 2014, 02:38 PM)
There's a devastating news being told by my friend. In the past, sponsoring parents shall need $100k for parents mean $50k each. Now, i heard they're increasing up to $120k each. Ganasai!
Oz government turn up to be blood sucking devil now. Sneaking whatever hole to squeeze money.
In future one day, PR will be forced to take up citizen nor dual.

Before calling Australia backward. Does Malaysia accept foreign experience??? Last year, someone in this forum told me don't even bother to "come back" cause Malaysian employers don't accept foreign experience. The person also whined and complained that OZ not accepting Malaysian experience.

QUOTE(tishaban @ May 14 2015, 10:33 AM)
I guess this is the biggest issue with migrating to Australia. I've worked in the Netherlands and the US where they actually do take into account previous experience and transferable skills even from Malaysia. Australia is pretty backward in this aspect.
