all SME sets are made by Samsung... which made the things even worse. most of the dead pixels and yellow tint complaints come from those SME set users (mayb becoz most of us are purchasing from SME, not AP). and this proves SME still got a lot to do to improve their quality standard  doh.gif

Just flash Litening rom: It will give you auto root, install clockworkmod recovery, install a rom without wiping your phone. Try Litening ver 4.0 and below not v5 or 6 as these later versions has more issues/bugs than ver 4 below

i'm having issue with flashing. heimdall won't detect my phone on my mac. Odin is out of the question. I dun want to install parallel just to root my phone. it's sad to know that it's so difficult to do this. My old Desire could be done with rEVOked on OSX automatically. Any tips how do it get about it? I just want to remove all those bloatware on sgs2

Did you install ANDROID SDK MaCOSX VERSION ( http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html ) to get the Android USB phone drivers - this will also install fastboot and all the adb files you need to start pushing files from terminal ( on Mac OSX) over:
If you have done that, than you can use this method to root: ( ODIN on Windows compared to this method is just plain ABC )

How to root the Samsung Galaxy SGII with GNU/Linux using the FOSS tool HEIMDALL on Apple Mac OSX :

Download and install heimdall.
Download an »insecure« kernel image from XDA
Put your SGII into download mode by pressing the volume down button, the home button and the power button at once.
Flash the device:

sudo heimdall flash --kernel zImage-insecure

If you now do

adb shell

you end up in a root shell.

If you would like to have further root functionality (e.g. for root apps), you can now install the su binary and the Superuser app from androidsu.com: http://androidsu.com/superuser/

From your computer: Remount the /system partition to read-write mode:

adb remount
Download the su zip file from androidsu.com to your computer and extract it. Then, on a console on your computer, push the su image to your phone with adb:

adb push su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed/system/bin/su /system/bin/su
Start a root shell on your phone with adb shell. On your phone: Correct the permissions and the ownership of the image and set a symlink to /system/xbin:

rm /system/xbin/su
ln -s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
chown root.shell /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
exit

Install the Superuser app (with a shell console on your computer):

adb install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed/system/app/Superuser.apk

Read page 1 , than from Kindergarten immediate graduate to O Level. Read some more at XDA and join in discussions here , graduate another level up to Degree. Root/flash and brick your phone, recover from it now you are already Master level

that's quite a bit to digest. not a fan of running adb manually. I'll try. and hope not to brick my 2k.
*
issuing adb commands is easy - just follow EXACTLY - one mistype of a letter, miss a spacing, miss a letter etc you will fail
And you can NEVER and UNLIKELY will brick your phone. Issuing adb commands from terminal , if fail means fail - your phone remain intact . It will NEVER and CAN NEVER brick

Hi all,
would like to check the alarm will not function when the phone is switch off? any software works even the phone is swithc off?

any good apps can remove the ads from apps or games.

my phone did not root so can't use ads free.

thanks
*
Sorry Android feature ( or you can call it a failure ) : Alarms will NOT work if phone is switch off. For this have to use good old Nokia. So far there is no software solution for this

You need ROOT to remove ads using AD Free. Even other solutions removing ads need root as simply such apps/solutions need to access system files. Without root enabled, system files cannot be access

And just use Odin to root - refer page 1 post #5 : Many available solutions - take your pick. It is easy and fast and you can NEVER and UNLIKELY will spoil your phone; the chance you brick/spoil is 1 in a million or more . you must be the most unlucky guy in the world if you brick rooting it. I always quote rooting your phone is turning your builtin 3000 cc sports car engine into reality instead of running it as just a normal 1600 cc car

Actually brick means u fail exam. Should be demoted. All my previous device WM until now Android i have never brick any before. If you follow exact instructions and read alot before doing anything you should be safe.

The experience learning how to recover from a brick phone is better than just learning how to flash. I have " purposedly" brick my phone already several times after reading how some guys did it - I just follow and than I go through several trials to recover it. Touch wood, I have been successful so far recovering it. I have bricked my galaxy Tab at least 5 times this 2 months just to test various combo of roms/kernels - the Tab is more tricky as some involve changing file system from default RFS to EXT4 .Compared to the Galaxy S II , the chance of bricking Tab is 10 to 1 as in SGS II you need not worry about changing the file system

This is for new users who wish to try root/flash the SGS II. It is I say freaking easy to root/flash the SGS II. How easy. If I rate a score of 10 for most difficult/high risk of bricking and 1 as most easy/no risk of bricking: This is my experience

10: Dell Streak
9. ALL HTC Windows Mobiles
8. HTC Flyer
7. Motorola Atrix
6. HTC Android
5. HTC HD2 ( from WM 6.5 to Android )
4. Galaxy Tab 7"
3. Google Nexus
2. Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab 10.1
1. Galaxy S II

isnt bootloop considered brick/semibrick ady? (or not)
if not i aslo have yet to master level sweat.gif

Semi brick : Phone cannot be switch on but can be booted into download mode. SOmetimes you will se this screen of death

Attached Image

Hardbrick : Phone cannot be switch on. Phone cannot be boot into either recovery or download mode using hard 3 buttons

Bootlooping is just a fail flash, easily corrected usually by rewiping cache and clear data/factory reset

You want to experience bricking, you can try this at these conditions :

- phone at 5 % battery charge - flash Litening 5.0 and above
- download samfirmware rom : put in a incompatible PIT file
- pull out the USB cable while flashing is at midway stage
- flash a SGS rom ( the old model )
- if you use any of the cook rom - extract the zip file : change the core system apps ( 2.3.4) with 2.3.3 from another rom. Zip it back and flash

Just as an academic exercise to compare size : the new Galaxy 5.3 " Note ( pink cutting in center ) vs Dell Streak 5 and Galaxy S II. The Note will be slightly wider and slight shorter than the Dell Streak 5
The NOTE is thinner and slimmer at only 9.65 mm thick and only 178 gm ( the Dell Streak 5 is 10 mm thick and weighs 220 gm )

2. especially curious with ipad2 vs samsung tablets . want to hear opinion fr real enthusiast like urself
3. about apple vs samsung myb u cn share ur opinion about the ongoing battle btw the two or rather apple vs htc+samsung
4. or wat the future coming to be of the superphones industry with advent comers like MIUI (but in support wise, only downside). is SE with their new display tech called white display or sthg lik that and nokia gonna kambek strong with their meego or Win7?

shit...this feels like an interview with uncle benny oredy biggrin.gif take ur time in answering all of the above LOL if not, just ignore them. its just a slight variation from the dry SGS2 post everyhour lol

but personally i think samsung is just so pissed with apple they just begin to start raining a barage of model to flood the market so that apple can lose customer based
my fren who is a apple fan n SE always try to mock samsung no matter wat they do but i nvr say back much to him haha

Testing, buying, selling, trading Gadgets is my hobby. Have been engaged in it the past 30 years since the very first PDA the Newton. The last 3 years has been more exciting with the emergence of Android. I have used Windows Mobiles for 15 years, Blackberry 8 years and Symbian, on and off for about 20 years, iOS for 5 years. Since retirement from corporate biz world about 3+ years ago, I have no problem with time engaging in this hobby

Yes I have used the iDevices. I have used all the iphone series since the first 8GB till the latest iphone 4. And I can tell you I will be the first to buy the iphone5. However the iphone still fail to impress me enough to keep it long. The shortest was iphone 4 , only about 2 weeks +. Other iphone around 3-4 months each. The iphone has its strengths ; however its weakness is a disappointment to me. Every user has different needs . The iphone just fail to meet my needs vs Android. I love the MAC OSX and can say is a diehard fan of it but not its i Devices. I just buy the iDevices to test, compare and play only. Maybe iphone 5/6 or ipad 3/4 might change my mind - I don't really know

Refer the official Galaxy Tab thread, I have posted in Page 1 FAQ why I find the ipad is not suitable for me vs Android tablets . Again is an issue of the ipad not able to meet my requirements. The iPad is a very good tablet if you like to play games and for videos ( with limitations, which I posted in the G tab thread )

Apple view the growing Android acceptance as a threat . From a business point, they are going all out to kill Android. Apple is too hegemonic , selfish and unable to accept competition. The past 2 years the way Steve Job plan his killing strategy on Google-Adobe was totally unacceptable to me. Seriously I feel Steve Jobs is really " scared, shitting in his pants" seeing the growth of Android. However their strategy of clouding the minds, brain washing , misleading I-Device users has turn them into "zombies" with not much a mind of their own anymore. Their product designs forces users to accept the way things to be done Apple 's way . Users are discourage to use their own imagination, creativity to use it otherwise. I feel with continuation of such strategy, the iDevice users will soon be just like robots. Many will not agree with my opinion but that is how I feel now. Perhaps Tim Cook will change my mind

If you could describe your problems better in some proper English description, not SMS style , we could give you an answer. I am only guessing here :

1. Where did you save your backups ? Is it on internal SD card or external micro SD. If it is the latter you have to go to Preferences and detect and select the backup folder
2. By default, all backups goes to the folder TitaniumBackuo in internal SD card if you did not select to change it
3. If it is at internal SD , try go Preferences and select it again
4. Did you enable USB debugging mode : settings/applications/development
5. You can also check whether your backup files are there - use any file explorer
