Location?? number of hedgie?

Hai there! Sorry, it took me a while to get back to you. My aunt told me that she'd help me take care of them when I'm away. Thanks for offering your help though.

QUOTE(Ensu7 @ Feb 8 2013, 10:05 PM)
Is it a normal behaviour when a hedgehog bite/lick/chew its own limbs? My Jo is doing that right now, right after waking up from her nap on my lap.
*
Perfectly fine. My babies do that too once in a while, freaks me out a bit, but they're not going to chew their limbs off. No worries.

QUOTE(pink_baby @ Feb 8 2013, 11:38 PM)
Help....my bf hedgehog's left eye is red. It seems can't see things from the left now....no bleeding but like eye redness. Normal eye colour is dark brown.
Anyone know how to do??
He's from seremban.

Oh no... Better get him/her to the vet soon. Go see Dr. Dev in Kinrara Vet Centre (http://kinraravets.com/) if the hedgie's in Selangor area. It's not very expensive compared to the other vet I've been to. However, if he's in Seremban, better go find a vet for hedgies quickly.

Does the eye look like it has popped out? Or does it look like something poked it?

My Huffster boy's right eye popped out due to an accident (on my part, sadly), I got him into surgery and after a week, his left eye popped out too because of the trauma. Hedgie's don't die from this, but it's safer to get them to the vet so they can prescribe antibiotic pills to ward off infection.

His eye like something poke it...but now his eye no more red already..but when wave on left he seems no reaction.. T_T
*
Perhaps he rolled up wrongly and accidentally poked his eye with his quills. sad.gif
Just make sure there isn't anything sharp in its' enclosure.

I would suggest a visit to the vet, but if you can't find one, best to keep the hedgie is a clean environment for the next few weeks & monitor his eye.

When I brought Huffster to the vet for consultation, I asked about my options if I didn't want surgery to remove his prolapsed eye. The vet said that I could just leave him the way it is and after a week or two, he'll scratch the eye out himself. I took the option and true enough, Huffster scratched the eye out after a few days. Still, I couldn't bear seeing him so bothered with his eye (he must've been in a lot of pain), so I brought him in for surgery where the vet removed the leftover bits and sewed it up. Drove me into debt with my parent's but that's the things that you do for a pet you love. smile.gif

I really hope the eye heals itself. If really confirm that he's blind already, you'll just need to keep him and his living area clean to prevent any sort of infection. nod.gif

Can anyone tell me which of the following pet shops sell food and accessories for hedgehog is cheaper? Petlovers, pet wonderland, pet family or any others pet shop at klang valley area...
*
Prices differ when they have promotion. Go check yourself if you have the time. Otherwise, just buy from any one of them since the difference is just a few Ringgit.

my hedgie keep flip her food bowl, water bowl, i gave her balls, toilet roll, plush toy, still she flip the bowl, any idea what happen and how should i deal with her? TT
*

Some hedgies like to do that. Sometimes, they poop in them too.

I have found that none of my 5 hedgehogs likes toys, so I assume most hedgies don't care about them. Therefore, don't bother buying anymore toys.

Just buy a new food and water bowl that cannot be flipped over. I use a plate to put their food and bought a water bowl with a large base (used for small dogs, but it does the job) from Pet Lovers Centre for just RM4 each.

I'm planning to buy a hedgehog for my brother as a gift.  Does anyone can suggest me pet shop near shah Alam n Klang valley with reasonable price wink.gif
*
I wouldn't advise for you (or anyone) to buy a pet from a pet shop. Try looking for hedgehog breeders in the Pet Store section here.
These breeders have the proper knowledge on taking care of hedgehogs, unlike most pet shop workers.
You can be sure that you're getting a healthy and happy pet, which is definitely important. smile.gif

I hope your brother can take good care of a pet hedgehog. smile.gif

ladies and gentlemen. I would really like to know where i can get good bedding for my hog... because few days ago i've been using some wood shavings but my hog was hurt due to it... so is there any other recommendations out there? I've googled about it, the best is Aspen Shavings? Currently I'm using a piece of cloth and some tissue... which it's quite smelly... So please recommend me some? Please n Thank you.
*
Aww, I hope your hedgie is okay. How did he/she get hurt?

user posted image

I use this nowadays. Pretty expensive but I use it because I don't have to change their bedding as often as wood shavings. Since I keep my hedgies outside, flies tend to lay eggs on the hedgie's poop too and I get worms (larva) after a few days. When I switched from wood shavings to this paper bedding, I can last one whole week without changing the bedding since it wards off the bad smell and soaks up the moisture (keeping the eggs from hatching too, which is great).

You can use fleece as bedding too, which is very safe for hedgehogs.

Pinto's right eye popped out. Don't know when that happened. Probably a few days ago. Meh. Must be hereditary or something because his dad's eyes popped out before as well.

He's doing okay, I think. He's been eating, albeit not his usual portion.
Just waiting for the popped eye to dry up and heal. The poor boy.

Yeah, hopefully the females are more like their mum. Speaking of their mum, Chubby's getting old (nearly 3 years old). No longer chubby like how she used to be. Haha.

Hello every1, I'm a hedgie owner too.. I found out recently my hedgie is super excited in eating mealworms.. but from what I read from the thread.. feeding them 1~2 per weeks is good and enough...

But I'm feeding her every day ... will it cause the problem ?
*
I don't think a few mealworms a day is a problem, but not like a bunch of mealworms everyday. I've read somewhere before that mealworms can reduce the bone density of the hedgies or something like that. You can sprinkle a bit of calcium powder (available in pet stores - it's calcium powder for small animals) on the mealworms/kibble if you're worried about that. smile.gif

QUOTE(ati radeon @ Jul 22 2013, 12:05 AM)
hey everyone,

i have a female hedgehog, about 1 year 8 months old. normally i use to scoop her up under the belly from the cage to clean it (the cage).

i did the same regularly everyweek, so as last week. as normal i scoop her up and place her gently on the washroom floor, i see it walking away normally to one corner where she likes to do her business.

but then i see her coming out limping at the left back foot, this is not the first time she is limping. her front left(or right, cant remember) was limping when she was 3-4 months old also and she recovered later.

so i thought probably she sprained her foot, i monitor her for 1 week. she still eats and drinks like usual. today i want to clean the cage again, so i scoop her up and this time i turn her around to have a look at the foot and belly.

and i found a large lump under her left chest, around the breast area of the left foot. her back left foot is still limping and she is dragging it. her front feet are normal, no limping motion when she moves.

is it a tumour already? i have looked around the internet, said WHS is common among hedgehogs and the symptoms starts with the dragging of the back feet. does it start with one or both?

i do not have picture now, will upload it tomorrow of her belly side.
*
Hmm, if the symptoms match those of WHS, it might be WHS. sad.gif
Bring her to a vet to check it out?

I'm not concerned about the leg, i do not know whether WHS starts with one leg or both.

I'm more worried about the swollen part at the left Breast. Will bring her to kinrara vets as recommended by most ppl here. Is it still appropriate to go or there are better vets?
*
Kinrara Vet is great.
Remember to make an appointment.
My little Huffster got his surgery there for half the cost compared to the Animal Clinic in KL. smile.gif
I hope she's okay.

ok, so i got her back from doc dev.

still too weak to drink or eat on its own. what food or fluid you guys use to feed hogs like this?
*
How is she doing? smile.gif I hope she's recovering well. I fed my Huffster his normal food and add some antibiotic drops to his water as instructed when he got his surgery there last time.

I noticed from the picture that her nails are very long and curving inwards. To prevent the nails from digging into her skin when she walks, remember to cut it every few weeks. Note: Don't cut into the quick (pinkish vein) on its' paw. smile.gif

QUOTE(mengfart @ Aug 17 2013, 10:20 PM)
not sure.. how to check?
*
If there's a 'ball' at the end of the fallen quills, you don't have to worry about mites. It's probably just quilling. Quilling lasts a while, so it's nothing to be concerned over.

If you look at the skin on its' back and you see crustiness or dandruff, your hedgie has dry skin. I used to solve the problem by giving my hedgies oatmeal baths (a handful of oatmeal in a cloth, dunk in water and squeeze it over their back several times before drying them) or putting two drops of (baby/vegetable/olive) oil on their back.

Hedgies are hardy pets. Just make sure that you feed it daily (I hope you know how much and what NOT to feed it). smile.gif

yeah,i'm doing some reading. just hope my parents won't simply throw food inside like what they did to my dog.
anyways, i thought of using cloth as bedding. is there any type of cloth that i should not use?
*
Glad to hear that you're taking the proper steps to learn about taking care of a hedgehog. thumbup.gif

Any sort of cloth would be fine. However, make sure that there are no loose strings that a hedgehog could catch its' foot on. There have been cases where the string wraps around their limbs, cutting off circulation (which could lead to amputations).

A lot of hedgehog owners (overseas) use fleece. You can find it in Tesco or any other stores easily nowadays for about RM15 or less. You can reuse it so it's eco-friendly, I suppose. A lot cheaper than what I use these days (http://www.petloverscentre.com.my/highlights/2012/Jul/34.jpg) because I'm lazy. You can use wood shavings too, but you have to change it more often compared to this bedding. I tried other cheaper types of paper bedding too but they turned out very dusty (which is bad for the hedgies too).

Questions:
1. When should I feed? since they are nocturnal, should I feed morning or night?
2. Is one 1 tablespoon a day enough for 3mth hedgie?
3. Will they show signs that they are hungry?
*
1.) It's up to you, really. Doesn't make much of a difference as far as I can tell. I usually feed them in the morning.
2.) I've been feeding each of my hedgies one tablespoon a day since they were 3 months. Haha.
3.) Nah, they don't whine or make noise like other pets do. However, I found that my hedgies tend to run to their food bowl (and sometimes lie in it) when they hear me opening the can that keeps their food (I think they smell it).

Basically, feed 1 tbsp. every 24hrs.

QUOTE(86Aries @ Aug 27 2013, 03:31 PM)
is it better to leave the heggie inside the cage exposed or give it a place to hide? because i thought of letting him get used to the new environment and noises, so that he's not timid. i currently let him hide in his box all the time and each time i lift the box, he'll curl up, huff and pop. let him smell my hand but no respond. and i think i'm stressing him out with the bonding. sad.gif
*
Many say that the hedgies should have a place to hide, so it's better to give it a box or something. However, my hedgies don't have a place to hide, so I don't think it matters much. He's probably still adjusting to his environment. Or you just have a very temperamental hedgehog.

Out of my 5 hedgies, Huffster is the only temperamental one. Before he went blind in both eyes, he used to huff and puff at me all the time even though he knows it's me. Since he went blind in both eyes, he doesn't huff so much at me anymore after he smells my fingers because he knows it's me. I think his sight made him even more nervous before this.

I guess you can try the T-shirt method (wear an old T-shirt overnight, put it into its' cage for a few days) so he gets accustomed to your scent.

Btw, do they respond when you call them?

No, they don't respond. I know because I could be calling one hedgie's name, and all five of them would be waking up and staring at me.

Yo guys, have a question. New to hedgehog here biggrin.gif I understand from the 1st post that hedgehogs prefer to be left alone. Hence, If I have 2 hedgie , i must seperate them ? Cannot put in the same box/home ? Also, does gender matter if I can out them together ?
Thx
*
NEVER put the opposite sexes together, or they will end up breeding (not something to be taken lightly).

You can keep the females together, if they can live together. My three female hedgies live together because they're mother + 2 daughters. You can try putting them together and see if they get along since females are less territorial.

NEVER put the males together. They'll fight. My younger male hedgie tends to bite the older hedgie (his father) when he gets too close to him.

I see.. Thanks yea.

I just bought my baby less than a week and I brought her to a vet to check up becuz of suspicious dry and flaky skin on her face and her legs.. scratching everytime and dropping quills.. the doctor told me that it could be a sign of mites! He gave me some drops and antibiotics. Problem is I don't know how to feed my baby the anti biotic . she just won't open her mouth...  doh.gif
*
I used to put some antibiotic drops into my hedgie's water bowl. Kind of hard to get them to open up their mouth. It could work if you pick them up and try to feed them using the syringe though.
