Large six-wheeled Toyogo box went for around RM40 the last time I checked at Tesco. A bit expensive but definitely cheaper & easier to clean than most cages.

If you want to save money, no need to buy feeding bowls. Just find something that resembles a bowl at home. I use the ceramic 'bowl' that people use to put in ketchup/soy sauce.

ic ic~~seems like tonight have to go kepong tesco already...
and steal from kitchen some plastic "sauce plate"...
btw,wat u use a bedding for the toyogo box?
*
Ah yes, correct!
I use ceramic one, y'know, those chinese-looking ones.

I don't use bedding. Used to use wood shavings but they get stuck to 'boy bits' when they pee or get horny (trust me, male hedgies get horny at least twice a day). Plus, I noticed my hedgies scratch themselves a lot more.

I'll go home and snap a picture of their current cages later so you could get an idea or something.

Hedgehogs rarely bite. You should worry more about being poked. It hurts more than being bitten. xD

Juvelines are easier to tame than adults.

err, can someone post their hedgehog cage or home?
i want to know what box ure referring to and how big is it.
the beddings, is it pine or ceddar or corncob or aspen beddings recommended?
cheers~

*
I'll post it later. I have the picture already but no cable at work to transfer.

This page should answer your question: http://hedgehogcentral.com/bedding.shtml

"Cedar should most definitely not be used as a bedding material for small mammals, including hedgehogs. The plicatic acid levels are far too high in both non-cured and cured cedar chips to be overlooked as potential health risk."

"Pine on the other hand does contain high levels of abietic acid when not cured, but those levels drop significantly when the wood is properly cured. Therefore, while non-cured pine bedding should be viewed in the same light as cedar, properly cured pine is likely safe for hedgehogs if adequate ventilation of the cage is provided."

"Although not as comfortable as wood shavings, corn cob is a relatively safe bedding, but certain precautions need to be taken here as well. Problems have been reported with young male hedgehogs getting pieces of corn cob trapped in their penis sheaths, resulting in irritation, local infection and even urinary infection. If not detected soon enough this can even result in death."

Overall, avoid using pine and cedar. Don't use corncob bedding for male hedgies.

I don't use bedding for my hedgies but if you do, aspen (wood shavings) should be okay.

Thank you for doing your research before purchasing a pet.

ehehe, sorry.. read a few times the infos in the first page, but i still have a few question in the end,
tried learning and researching online but i guess i didnt read the hogcentral page but i did read other online materials  sweat.gif  sorry, im a klutz.

so, alternative for aspen beddings? they are really hard to find in Malaysia, unlike overseas(not planning to buy them overseas for the time being)
read that newspaper beddings are good too, can DIY yourself but still looking for other alternatives.
also read some ppl recommend pine shavings, but how to know which one are safe and which one are not? care to give some brands and where to get them?  rclxub.gif

btw,  if i installed a DIY computer fan ontop of the hedgie cage/house/box is it ok? i want to it to ventilate the air inside the box peremeters..
so constant moving and fresh air inside it, and no stuffy/stale air inside it. or is it a bad idea?  nod.gif

also, after they are tamed, have any of you let them play in ure grass lawn(no pesticide/ferts used, 100% supervision within controlled area - no predators and other animals or anything that may posed threat to your hedgies?) or is this a no-no situation ? shakehead.gif
sorry for the troubles hehe

cheers~

A number of hedgie owners use newspaper bedding (a large sheet for the floor & shredded newspaper for bedding) but personally, I don't like to expose my babies to the chemicals (ink) on the newspaper. I wouldn't let my babies eat, drink or live in a condition that I know could pose harm to them. They eat high-quality kibble, drink filtered water (think of the chlorine and germs in tap water!) and live in a clean environment (I clean the cage every morning).

You could use shredded paper as well if you have a shredding machine but they carry too much dust for my liking, which could affect their respiratory system.

You can use fleece bedding. You can find them in Tesco or textile stores. I've seen them sold in Tesco for about 20 bucks. You can cut it up and let them burrow in it.
A lot of hedgie owners overseas use fleece.

If you think fleece is too costly for you, you can use cloth as well (make sure there's no loose threads on the cloth since hedgies can catch their nails or tangle their tiny feet in them, causing a cut in blood circulation = amputation).

I found two pages online that could be really useful (second link is highly recommended):

I finally found time to upload the picture of my hedgie cages.

This used to be Huffster's living space when he was my only hedgehog but my mum & I found it too difficult to clean.

After that, I switched to the six-wheeled Toyogo box.

thanx so much for uploading the photos
now need to recalculate my room free space... sad.gif
he doesnt mind the small toyogo box eh? no beddings means you are cleaning it everyday? kewl~

*
If you're keeping a hedgehog in your room, you'll be greeted with the stench of its' poo & pee every morning.
Try keeping hedgies in a well-ventilated area. wink.gif

Six-wheeled Toyogo box is fine. Yes, no bedding = clean every morning. I put the hedgie on the floor every morning. While they run around, I wash, soap and dry the box. Take about half an hour for me to clean all 3 cages everyday.

^ the smell? hurm maybe i should reconsider on the diy pc fan thing? for ventilation purpose
dont want all my pets outside my room, since my parents will start yappingĀ  bla bla bla~
so i guess need to plan again

*
I keep my babies in the kitchen area next to the toilet, so I leave the toilet door open at night with the exhaust fan on to clear the smell.

It still smells pretty bad in the morning but it's not too horrible.

You could try keeping him/her in your room without the DIY fan first (I fear it might spread the smell instead). You can see how it goes the next morning. wink.gif

oh god...i think i got the wrong toyogo box from carefour kepong...damn it...
i guess my box is too low for my Aby...=S
*
You can still return it if you have the receipt and they have the six-wheeled one?

If not, why not buy another one, drill a large hole on the side of each box and connect them with pipe?
I would advise against getting a box where the hedgehog can climb out. I've had my share of poo & pee all over the kitchen floor because Huffster will always escape from his previous cage (the first picture with the mini playpen).

Whaat. Hedgies can climb up that high?Ā  shocking.gif
*
Before I extended the height using the steel wiring, he climbed out. After I extended it, he went UNDER the playpen. rclxub.gif They're very smart little creatures.

Then I changed his cage to a Toyogo box and put in a shoe box as his hide-box. He climbed on top of the shoe box and jump out of his cage, into my female hedgehog's cage (my mum placed the two Toyogo boxes next to each other).

That's how I ended up with Chubster having three babies. rclxub.gif

He's such a troublemaker.

eh...today after bath...my hedgie clicks....

They have serious climbing skills, dude. Were you drying him after the bath with a cloth?
Two out of three of my hedgies hate being dried, especially Huffster.

Named your hedgehog yet?

Haii all,

Anyone know whether hands N paws is still treating hedgehogs?
I need to bring Huffster to a vet tomorrow because I injured his right eye during his bath today and it's all bloody now. He's blind in that eye now since it looks like it popped out of the socket.

Any other vets that you know of that treats hedgehogs?

I'm going to the Animal Medical Centre tomorrow. I called them and was told that the exotic animal vet would be in at 11am. No hedgehog vets around Subang as far as I know, but if you find one, do let us know! smile.gif

what in wild kingdom? how'd that happen telileti, as i know you'd never cause such injuries on purpose.
*
I was giving him a bath and I brushed his belly with a toothbrush because he tends to pee all over himself. He never liked me brushing his belly so he curled up tightly. I twisted and pulled out the brush because I couldnt get it out, so I think that act caused the toothbrush bristles to poke at his eye and it popped out. Poor thing was in so much pain that he couldnt even stand up and kept falling over to the side. sad.gif He's now all curled up in a ball. Just need to get his eye removed and stitched shut now. I'll update here after I get him to the vet.

The vet confirmed that his eye is damaged permanently and must be removed. Left him at the centre for an overnight stay since he needs surgery. Total bill is 700 bucks, so far. sad.gif Who knew it cost so much to have an eye surgery. Oh well... better be safe than sorry. sad.gif

as long as he is safe and healthy is good lo... losing one eye is consider okla.. at least you let all people know need to careful when bath them.. hahaha cheer up.. you are a good owner.. some owner just let the hedgehog die and buy new one since rm700 can buy 7 hedgehog already... you are a very good and responsible owner...
*
My mum told me to bring him home and she'll perform the 'surgery' herself. *eyeroll* I think she forgot the anaesthetizing him and stitching up the eye bit...Hopefully he's okay and I can bring him home tomorrow.

Learnt that we shouldnt brush their belly with a toothbrush or scruff hold the hedgehog with the skin/quills on its back) because hedgehog's eyes are prone to proptosis (popping out).

I dont think you guys should worry so much. As long as you brush their back, and use your hands to wash their belly and feet, they ahould do just fine. Just avoid holding them by the quills on their back and dont use brushes near their face. I dont think I'm going to use toothbrushes on them anymore.

huffy's going to be a pirate xD! he's so going to gain more bad boy points with the ladies tongue.gif

on a serious note, I hope the surgery went well, that and him not being too traumatized. heck for all you know he'd probably be nicer to you! (or another eye comes o- okay maybe too soon ><)

hang in there woman smile.gif
*
Lol, he won't be hanging around any lady hedgies, that's for sure. Don't want more accidental baby hedgies popping out. wink.gif

I have yet to hear from the vet since he called to notify me that the X-ray shows that his eye is definitely ruptured and must be removed. I shall call in the morning and check up on them.

I seem to have a whole lot of bad incidents occurring before my exams this year.. one before mid-term and now this one before finals. Oh boy.

Hopefully Huffster's a lot nicer to me than he was before (even the vet asked me if he's usually so mean or not). He did sniff my finger earlier before I left him there. He usually just puts his 'visor' down and huff at me. blush.gif

Thanks for the words of encouragement. smile.gif
