Owh... but my girl loves to sleep in the sand also :/ Whether I put the house or not she hangs out there a lot.
About the poop yeah I learnt that in biology in secondary school haha, forgot what's it called.
So removing the house, can I put her favourite hideaway (pic) thingy in the sand?

Anyways guys, I have Roborovski hamsters up for urgent adoption, it's in the link in my signature below!
*
yeah mine did that a lot too, coz they like that place better...cooler. Reason why i dont suggest is coz they will start storing their food there & when its wet the sand can easily get stuck at the food. So when the hamster eat it, she my swallow the sand.

I trained my hamster not to sleep in the toilet, when i first got it he always sleep in there so whenever I saw him in the toilet I gently blow the toilet & the wind wakes him up. He will rush to his house/dark hiding place & sleep in there then. I did this almost a month & after that he never sleep in the toilet anymore brows.gif

Ah yeah, I saw her food there that's when I got a little worried.
Blow? Hamsters hate that right :/ Hmmm but I like it when my girl sleeps there, she looks very calm there.
I'll take a picture soon and post it here~

yeah thats how you gently wake them up & chase them from making it their "sleeping area" without scaring them when sleeping. Hamster eating sand in their food can cause problems to the digestive system.

sand bath = for your hamster to clean their fur to keep it dry & clean free from mites.
toilet litter = for your hamster to pee in there, it will stink so replace it every 2-3days...

Try to avoid your hamster from peeing in the sand bath or else her fur will start to stink when she uses the sand bath.

Just to add. The blow has to be the gentle breeze blow. Not the full force blow. I heard guinea pigs can kena seizure if blow but dunno how true or got effect on hamsters or not la.. but soft breeze will do. Enough to wake them up

starrynight: I actually gave it a try just now while she was in the sand, she was kinda shaky looking at me. Better to blow at her body or face?

infernoaswen: Ah, I've heard about the digestion issue. But I didn't know there's a difference between the sand and litter! Oh noes. Anyways the photo below is the sand box and the little yellow hideout I've just removed, she loves to sleep inside there on the sand. Will probably add a small box with litter, but can I still put the sand there?

Usually I blow at their body, keep blowing constantly but with gentle force & he would run to his hideout. Maybe yours is first time so she is not sure where to go/hide to sleep.

If you want her to sleep in the yellow hideout then I would advise not to put sand bath in there. Get another smaller container maybe something like in mine in my thread & use it. Plus smaller can save cost on the amount of sand bath you use plus you can make it like an inch thick so she will enjoy digging & rolling in it...

As for toilet litter, I usually use something that is bigger in size. I cant find the exact brand that I used to use but its similar size like below. Good thing about toilet litter is they stick together well when the pee dries up so its like a chunk of pee that you can scoop out. Since they are bigger in size this would make the scoping process easier compare to bath sand that are more like fine grains.

Ah alright.
I'm hesitating to remove the sand cuz I dun want the big colourful boxy thing to be wasted as i takes up a lot of space.
Anyways, thanks a bunch for sharing the info, will post more pics once I've "renovated" the house somemore haha.

Actually when I was in the pet shop the store assistant told me not to get sand bath, she said that so far she's seen it makes their fur drop out so she recommended I buy some anti-odor spray instead. Is this true? O__o

Also right, what is the minimum size wheel for dwarf hamster? The one I have now is like the size of...you know those RM20+ wire cages they sell in pet stores, including running wheel? That's the size of wheel I have, but my WW hammy doesn't seem to be running on it, so I'm scared it might be too small maybe? D: Thinking of getting him a bigger wheel if that's the case.

Is that so? My girl's fine, infact her fur is glowing! Haha. Pictures of her below~
(The last pic is more accurate on the tone of her fur)

The best smallest wheel for dwarf hamster would be the 6.5 inches blue hamster wheel in infernoaswen's WTS page, which I'm also using.
If the wheel you have looks like hers but smaller, that one's too small. If it's the very cheap-plasticky one, you're never getting any sleep sooner or later.
OR, she runs when you're sleeping haha.

Awww she's so cute! Haha the wheel noise doesn't bother me much, it's mostly the cage biting x.x It's so bad that I move him to the study room at night before I sleep. That way the noise won't wake me up.

I read before they say if the hamster keep using the sand bath it can cause the fur to dry up. I never had this experience before though, if you notice fur starting to dry up then might want to limit the amount of time you let your hamster play with the sand bath. Otherwise it should be fine, sand bath can never be "not good" for hamsters.

Probably the shop owner want to clear off their odorless spray so telling you to buy that instead.

As for the wheel, yeah 6.5" is best...those sanko brand is very good & super silent. Expensive but quality stuff is never cheap anyways. Those wheels that comes free when you buy hamster cages you can throw it away, its garbage. Bought hamster cage before, too small & its so hard to use because of the wheel resistance. My hamster never used his wheel until I change to sanko wheel & the next day I saw him running on it already.

As discussed previously, thats what you get for using metal bar cages. Change to those storage box as cages or 2ft plastic aquarium as their cage & the biting will stop. You will be able to sleep peacefully & keep your hamster "safe" in your room while sleeping smile.gif

Those storage box, toyogo brand(forgot the brand name) cost like ~rm30 only whereas plastic aquarium only rm50 smile.gif

Thanks! biggrin.gif
And yes as infernoaswen said, storage box or aquarium is the best. I pity my parents last time as their bedroom window was just next to the balcony when I use to use metal bar cages hahaha.
Anyways if you're interested in storage box I would be willing to sell mine. Her playground's quite abandoned :/

lol sure or not? last time I went to giant, was on sale...damn cheap...my mum bought 2 big boxes. Not transparent colour though since she wanted to use for stuff...

Yup those are the best but make sure you guys put things like chewable toys in the cage or any sort of toys that can help the hamster trim their teeth smile.gif

I personally would not use any spray on the hamster. Who knows what chemical is in the mix. My hamsters like their sand bath but you should monitor yours. If got fur drop, let's discuss the solution. Maybe it's the sand?

As for wheel, since your WW is a dwarf - it needs at least 6.5 inches in diameter to prevent backache. Don't get this wheel

user posted image

As it will cause bumble foot and hurt your hamster's feet. A good silent wheel will be more expensive but quality in a long run. I bought mine for RM 45 + I think. You can also get the wodent wheel but that would be RM 70 or so.

Here's how my wheel looks like .. similiarly

user posted image

The huge one obviously is for syrian, the medium one (make sure 6.5 inches diameter) is for dwarvies. Not quite sure about robo though.

I bought my storage box 345 square inches for RM 50, transparent case. Tall enough to not let them (WW) climb out.

oh my gawddd I feel cheated by Tesco lol.
Anyways infernoaswen, when my girl's in the sand, do I blow until she comes out of it, or only to wake her up?
Starrynight : I use the smallest green wheel for my robos, they seem fine, but the medium should be more comfortable for them.

I tried to blow my girl when she was in the sand, she just look at me (angrily of course) and move to the other corner of the box lolol. But I blew her when she was biting the metal supporter of the wheel, she stops after a few seconds.

Thanks starrynight smile.gif That's Chub-Chub, he was the chubbiest among the 3. Unfortunately he just passed away a couple of minutes ago. My fault, forgot to refill the water bottle ><
