If you are looking for Ultra thin and powerful non-gaming notebook, you may want to consider this new Dell Vostro V131. Highlights:

1. Ultra thin: Height: 16-21mm (MBA is 3-17mm)
2. Full Sandy Bridge i3-2330 CPU: 2.2Ghz
3. Affordable: Starting price at RM2,099
4. Good connectivity: (compare to MBA)
- 2 x USB 3.0 + 1 USB 2.0/eSATA combo
- VGA & HDMI
- RJ45 Ethernet
5. Good battery life: 8 hours battery with Wifi (based on real testing, not what advertised!)
6. Matte screen!
7. CPU runs really cool; Furmark + Prime95 for 30 minutes Max CPU = 81C!

Cons:

1. Screen brightness is just 170 nit, very average.

Here are some home-made photo and review:

Screen
Although the screen is just 170 nit, by comparison to Acer 3820tg (200nit) screen, it is not bad. In fact, there is no problem looking at the screen all day.
(Left - V131; Right 3820tg)

Keyboard
The keyboard is comfy, but the key actually smaller. Should not be a problem. As you can see, the palm rest is non-glossy as well, less fingerprint and feel quite nice. Really like the full directional keys.
user posted image

Sound
The speaker is louder than 3820tg, but still it's a notebook speaker so don't expect much. I am now doing furmark+prime95, the fan is being pushed to max and it's quite loud if compare to my 3820tg. I don't have any device to measure this, but according to NBR, it's 46.1 dB (A) in V131 compare to 38.3 dB(A) in 3820tg. The HDD is quiet despite being 7200 RPM. According to NBR the HDD make some noise even in idle, I can't hear it.

Temperature
According to NBR, furmark+prime95 for 1 hour 23 minutes, the max temp is just 77C. Their room temperature is around 23C. I did my own testing, running furmark+prime95 for 30 minutes with an i3 CPU, max CPU is 81C. From what I notice, it is around 77C-78C and stable, not sure why Hardware Monitor recorded 81C, but all in all, for a that kind of stress test, the temperature is low. I will not worry that 'ordinary' user will make the notebook overheat. Compare to my 3820tg max CPU is 94C (with AIDA64 as well). My room temperature is probably 26C (that's what I set in Aircon...) or higher.

Boot time:
Just run Windows Performance Toolkit, without uninstall anything, without disabling / change any services. Boot time is 20.779 seconds! sweat.gif

Will definitely do some write up once I get my unit. brows.gif All other reviews are too shallow! Will test how is the temperature in heavy loads in this slim profile. I am especially interested in the so-called Intel hyperbaric cooling system in this notebook.

However, I only got the free backpack today. Notebook will come later. sweat.gif

Agree. MBA 11" was my first choice before this come up. Finally go for V131 mainly for price and connectivity (VGA and RJ45).

+1. all true, especially the humble part. thumbup.gif

For those thinking of running AutoCAD with HD 3000 (the integrated GPU in Sandy Bridge), you should check out this:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=96749

The moderator erik has been running these application without problem:

- autodesk inventor 2012
- adobe CS5
- autocad mechanical 2012
- google sketchup 8

Using normal AMD / nVidia card such as HD6470m and GT540m will not allow you to enable the Hardware Acceleration in AutoCAD anyway. Only professional graphic card such as Firepro / Quadro have those option. Check if your card can support it:

http://www.autodesk.com/autocad-graphicscard

Vostro 3350 height is 27.3-29.8mm, compare to V131 16-21mm. That is a lot of difference.

Well, if you dont mind about thinness, you shouldn't look at V131. brows.gif

The V131 is too new haha, so you'd probably still won't find it anywhere at the moment...
The V131 might have heat problems based on the initial preview by notebookcheck...
If you really want to go for it, its better that you only take the i3 variant, and perhaps if budget permits in the future, swap to SSD laugh.gif

Well... for 13 inchers, you usually get what you pay for... the relatively good ones are more expensive sad.gif

my v131 is not here yet! a few points to consider when choosing MacBook Air:

1. Connectivity - it doesn't have VGA and ethernet, so you need to buy connectors and carry with you when you travel.
2. Since you use AutoCAD, you may need to install BootCamp to boot into Windows to continue using your old AutoCAD

If you are OK with those, MBA is definitely a good choice!

@[PF] T.J.: About potential heat problem in V131, I have different opinion. If you check the preview of V131 (i5), the max temp at the bottom of notebook is 42.3C. The room temperature is 23C. That is actually cooler than most notebook; including m11x, m14x, 3820tg, MBA 11", MBA 13" and many others. (Make sure check room temperature) It still not as cool as Vostro 3350, but that does not mean it has heat problem, right?

Well said bro thumbup.gif
But 42.3C at 23C is quite high lo laugh.gif
Should compare the V131 to cooler models I think haha, cannot compare with gaming models laugh.gif
Actually my definition of "heat problems" = get hot, not to the extend of auto shutdown laugh.gif

I've used the Vostro 3450 before... its a very nice laptop apart from the speakers laugh.gif
The 3350 has mono-speakers only iinm, which are even crappier haha, so don't expect too much from "it" laugh.gif
Also, you might want to open/close the lid slowly because it might tend to become loosened with time nod.gif

@cow, same to your girlfriend, might want to be softer with the lid to prevent it from wobbling

Well, I think it'd be nice to compare it (i5 variant) to the i5 variants of the Asus U36Sd, Toshiba Portege R830, Acer TimelineX 3830T and Sony Vaio (VPCSB26FG) hmm.gif
But then there's still not much reviews on them yet... (so just ignore me) doh.gif

Since we don't have any data on the internal CPU temperature on V131, I will just try to compare the surface / bottom temperature against other similar spec:

V131 (Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3 GHz):
user posted image

Toshiba Portege R830-110 (Intel Core i3 2310M 2.1 GHz):
user posted image

Asus U36JC (Intel Core i5 480M 2.666 GHz):
user posted image

IdeaPad z370 (Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3 GHz):
user posted image

MacBook Air 13 (Intel Core i3 2357M 1.3 GHz ULV):
user posted image

Sony VPC-SB1Z9EB (Intel Core i5 2520M 2.5 GHz + AMD Radeon HD 6470M):
user posted image

Thinkpad X220 (Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3 GHz):
user posted image

If taking the room temperature into consideration, the temperature of V131 is mostly cooler all those model. With these data, I have reason to believe the internal cooling of V131, despite its super slim 21mm, is better than most notebook. I will definitely test the CPU in max load when I get a hand on this machine.

Thanks. biggrin.gif That's the closest spec I can find. All 13" notebook, except Thinkpad X220 (12"). All Sandy Bridge CPU except Asus U36JC (1st gen Core). I am comparing some SB i3 and even ULV SB with the i5 in V131. Even then, look like V131 still has lower temperature. With the i3 V131, I am expecting an even lower CPU temperature.

Here is a comparison between i3 and i5 (1st gen core), i3 operating at lower temp: http://www.goldfries.com/hardware-reviews/...ocessor-review/

Now, where is that V131! Why is it still not here!

We can only talk about the externals at the moment since both models are still fairly new laugh.gif

Inspiron 13z is basically more glossy in terms of design and looks great for normal consumers.

Vostro V131, being targeted at business users, is more user-friendly with matte materials.

My vote goes to V131 haha~
I've used a Vostro before and they're really impressive~

We’re used to seeing dull displays on business laptops, and the Vostro’s 13.3in 1,366 x 768 panel is no exception. The low measured brightness of only 177cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 185:1 make for washed-out, bland image quality

I ordered the Red one, just add RM14. It's for a girl, worth it.

Worry about the screen brightness too. My 3820tg is bright, with above 200 nit. By comparison, I think the V131 screen will look dull. Hopefully with less reflection on the matte screen will earn it some point. As of now, the screen could be it weakest point...

Here's a user comment on the screen: sweat.gif

Right. I seldom use full brightness in 3820tg. But having the option is nice. tongue.gif

Ya, 6xxMb seem crazy for Windows 7! Not sure I want to disable that many service though. I really like Aero and stuff. Windows memory management will automatically page rarely used memory into hardisk to make room for new applications. RAM is super cheap these days. Still, it's nice to know that it can be done. Again, having the option is nice. icon_rolleyes.gif

Notice another small and slim notebook in Notebookcheck: E320 but looks like pricey at 740 € ~ RM3100 and the screen is also not good...

having same problem as u. no option to select backlit. not even when using SG site. apparently, only the US website has the backlit by default. the options in Dell website changed a little over time. there is no longer option for i5!

instead of order online, you should really call the 1800-333-1888. i call and get a free bag biggrin.gif if your bargaining power is better than me (i suck at bargaining), you probably can get something more. alternatively, you should PM viper88 in this forum and get instant discount! see if they can help you to secured a backlit keyboard. i suspect more option will be available over time...

yeah, i noticed that too. I hope through call can solve it. But after consider it for a while. I think i'll juz wait a little longer. Myb there will b better customization in the future. Perhaps a SSD.

For the mean time, i'll juz satisfy my desire by watching review, hands-on and unboxing drool.gif . I believe u do the same too tongue.gif . Can't wait for your unit. Sure taking long this Raya season

damn, i m suck at bargaining. Updated first page with a more worthy review for V131. Highlight:

- Street Fighter 4 benchmark: 36.6 FPS! (on 1280x720) (sarcasm hehe)
- Red look damn nice!

@aie.unwell: if you can wait, please wait, September seem interesting with Ultrabook coming out! Acer might beat Asus in coming out the first one:

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/08/ace...r-air-about-it/

( USD $770 - $960 ~ RM2310 - RM2880 )! No VGA though...

In my case, I can NO LONGER WAIT!

Agree, at that temp, I will not recommend putting on your lap too. But when I look at other notebook, this is still lower than most, including the most recent Macbook Air 13" (with ULV). Here is a comparison:

For comparison purpose, here is the max temperature of MacBook Air 13" with ULV CPU:

Duration: 1 hour 27 minutes of Furmark + Prime95
Max Temp: 99C

Yes, there is throttling at 99C, CPU slow down to 799Mhz.

Duration: 1 hour 27 minutes of Furmark + Prime95
Max Temp: 99C

Yes, there is throttling at 99C, CPU slow down to 799Mhz.

Finally, a worthy review of V131 from Notebookcheck.com (in German):

As suspected, the temperature is not of concern in this notebook. This is Furmark + Prime95 running for 1 hour 23 minutes:

Max CPU Temp: 77C.  thumbup.gif

@joanneway:

Both tests conducted by NotebookCheck.com:

Room temperature: 23C
http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Dell-Vos...ok.60036.0.html

Room temperature: 23.4C
http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Apple-Ma...ok.59563.0.html

Will test it in both in-door (air con) and out-door once I get my Vostro!

Hey Eugene, seldom see you around. How's UK riot? You snatch anything big? brows.gif Just kidding.

BTW, good question, I did a bit check up, found this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/253029-32-heat

The spec sheet for my 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green drive reads:
Temperature (Degrees C) - Operating 5 to 55, Non-operating: -40 to 70

The spec sheet for the Intel X25M-G2 drives reads:
Temperature - Operating: 0C to 70C, Non-operating: -55C to 95C

Look like SSD can tolerate more heat.

The biggest drawback is without USB3.0. With USB3.0, there is an option to replace your HDD with a small SSD, and use USB for other storage. USB 3.0 allow almost full speed of HDD without bottleneck...

So, are you sure?

But my future notebook, I really want a mini-Sata port. Most Business laptop has those, I think V131 has that too. Then, I can buy 1 of those small 64GB mini sata SSD (size of a memory card) and slot it in. Will install all my OS and important applications there. VMware, games all from the original HDD...

I was thinking since some V131 has WWAN option, there must be a slot? My friend just brought a mSATA from ebay and plugged that into his X220. He told me the slot was meant for the WWAN but he can use for mSATA instead...

I don't really mind not having USB 3.0... The HDD slot if I am not mistaken is 1.8inch one... I think 1.8inch SSD's cost more? So don't think I would need to invest in a SSD so soon lar...

But what do u think of the price? How much is Malaysia selling it?

Oh I think the specs is similar to the E120 in Malaysia.. Malaysia seems to more expensive, the one with W7HP is rm1999, and no customizations

From this spec, got these info:

Weight 1.69kg and Height 24mm.

So, it's not as thin as V131, but a little lighter. There is a discrete GPU (HD 6470M). This is a low end GPU, so, you cant really play game with it, I would these GPU are useless. Sony screen should be much better. The HDD is slower at 5400 RPM. I think there is a DVD.

For a non-gaming notebook, I'd try to avoid any discrete GPU since I already have HD3000. It suck battery and generate more heat.

The gpu can switch. stamina mode=hd3000, speed mode=HD 6470M. rclxms.gif

i like the idea of extended battery sheet. Double the time(although a little bulky) and can b charge separately.

nice spec too. juz prob when in max performance the fan is noisy and hot. I can tolerate that.

but i dunno know... perhaps simpler is better, less room for error hmm.gif

i'm not sure about the name of the model. they got plenty sb16, sb18, sb19 and many more. But yup vaio s has sim card slot beneath the lappy. I've checked the manual, it stated there. Plus there's a review about it.

But this one SA (high end), SB also got sb26, sb28, sb29. Damn y did their name so confusing rclxub.gif . More research need to b done.

Correct me if i'm wrong notworthy.gif

I have seen SB16 personally, the sim card slot is not there, there nothing to open at that spot..

Basically, the higher number has higher spec, 16,18,19. Newer batch, 26,28,29..

but still...can't beat v131 in term of battery life without the battery sheet

AMD/ATI does not have better driver.
But it does have better implementation of AA/AF and thus better IQ in games.
For video (assuming you're referring to 1080p content playback), I doubt you'll see difference.

I have Intel IGP, ATI and nVidia in my notebooks, HTPCs and desktop PCs.
ATI does have a problematic driver.
In terms of "solid" driver, both nVidia and Intel are delivering far less problematic drivers.

As I said, it is a known fact that both ATI and nVidia have better AF/AA implementation than Intel IGP therefore it looks better in games.

I have prove that nVidia driver is more problematic than ATI driver:

1. Google search on "nvidia driver problem" returns 607,000 results
2. Google search on "ati driver problem" returns 327,000 results
3. Google search on "amd driver problem"returns on 71,700 results

As you can see, since AMD take over ATI, there is less problem. And the fact remain, both ATI+AMD still has far less problem than nVidia. rolleyes.gif

Facts aside, I been using AMD 5650 for almost a year, on a Switchable graphic some more, most problem can be solved by updating to latest driver. They have at least 1 driver every month. They continue to update their driver whenever there is new game. It's good enough for me.

I guess there is no right or wrong answer. It's more like a personal experience.
I am not sure whether it is the right way to collect the sample.
Just take it with a pinch of salt.
ATI
nVidia

I have nVidia and ATI GPU.
Based on my experience, I have had ZERO issues in various applications and games since day one with nVidia's factory driver.
I don't encounter a single issue in a subsequent update. Excellent compatibility. nVidia only update WHQL driver once every quarter.
I have been frequently updating the Radeon driver in my 3820TG. It still has the flickering issue and compatibility issue with some application.
I believe you have encountered unusable application after an update of ATI driver.

P/S I disabled the switchable mode for my 3820TG since day one. It's in discrete mode.
Now, with Nahalem i7 in my 3820TG, it has to run in discrete mode permanently. laugh.gif

For my case, how do I know it is a flickering?
I don't see flickering in my other notebooks with the same application, OS and content.

Many don't even aware it is flickering issue.
Some don't see it. Some feel it's a thorn in the flesh. Some don't see it a problem and just ignore it.
I seldom game or watch movie on it. I only use it when I'm on business trip.
So, for me, I don't see it is a huge problem and I just "live" with it.
But deep down I know there are still huge rooms for improvements for ATI's driver.

Anyway, just want to share this when we touch on "xxx offers better driver".
You don't have to agree with me.

ATI
nVidia
laugh.gif The link is funny. Yup, I am agree too, the argument on which driver is better is subject to personal experience and preference. I have no flickering problem so far. I update my driver every month.

PS: just saw your post, may be i m not aware of the flickering if it exist.

@J.A.Robert: I called up the 1-800 number the day it was launched! Still have not get my notebook! Thanks for you offer anyway...

this vostro v131 looks like a solid business laptop.. now that my 4820tg is currently on repair.. feel so tempting to replace it with this vostro.
I know maybe some will said it is a downgrade, but I prefer a business laptop rather than normal consumer laptop. The advantages of v131 over 4820tg are matte screen, better keyboard, smaller (i like 13.3 size), lighter, thin(not sure which is thinner), not sure what else.
But the processor currently offered is up to i3 only? I prefer it comes with i5 at least

Well, it'll be a downgrade in terms of performance... but then its an upgrade in user-friendliness and warranty support laugh.gif
So its depends on how you look at things, and how your prioritize~
There used to be an i5 variant fro the V131, but seems like Dell has removed it... Even though there's not much review yet, but putting an i5 into a 13" slim laptop may bring about high temps. Perhaps you would want to wait for awhile and see how the V131 really fairs (with SB i5). You might want to wait until the Malaysian specs stabilizes 1st, who knows we might just get back the i5 variant nod.gif

What happen to you 4820tg? I am currently using 3820tg, still strong and nothing wrong with it.

It's thinner than my 3820tg. It should be much thinner than 4820tg. According to spec: Height: 30.40 mm

V131 is 21.00 mm.

Other advantage including USB3.0 and e-Sata. Both allow you to use external HDD at 10 times (theoretically) faster. With this option, it is now possible to install a small SSD (cheaper) for OS and application, then keep all movies, VMware, etc in an external HDD. You can access the external HDD at full speed.

V131 has faster HDD (7200 RPM), 2 hours more battery life with wifi, Sandy Bridge CPU and there is also a finger print reader... but i dont use them... the Webcam is a HD webcam, much better than most web cam.

The difference between i3 and i5 in most daily computing are not noticeable; even in running a few VMware and gaming. But i3 should run cooler.

But since you already have 4820tg, I recommend you keep it. V131 is no match when it comes to gaming. The 5650 / 6550 GPU in 4820tg will make V131 cry. cry.gif

my hard disk failing.. S.M.A.R.T reporting hdd going to fail.. lucky I have few months before my warranty period over.
I have few other complaints like lid not closing properly and noisy fan even when not gaming, keyboard trapped so many dust and it flexes.
I have desktop already for gaming, and I don't like gaming in laptop coz the fan will kick in, laptop feel hotter and I feel like my laptop under stress tongue.gif
I use my laptop mainly for java programming, that's why I require to have i5 processor, and the portability of the laptop means I can do programming more on the go. u have explained more advantages v131 have compared to 4820tg. but then when it come to my senses, maybe I should just keep the acer. dunno rclxub.gif

I didn't bother to clean format the hdd. Just do backup and sent it to service center. they are going to replace it. and yeah, it looks like this hdd so easy to fail, haven't yet experience other brand of hdd that fail this soon, or maybe just my bad luck

HDD failure! I hope you managed to save your data.

Desktop is much prefer if playing game. I play game mostly when traveling, so a portable and gaming notebook is preferred.

I list down all advantages of V131 as you have requested for it! If you dont have 4820tg, make sense to get V131. But since you already have 4820tg, make sense to keep it. Unless $ is not an issue. smile.gif

Even with Eclipse+JWS+JBOSS+everything jav-else running, I doubt you will see the differences in i3 and i5. smile.gif

Worth it IMO, the old Inspiron keyboard which don't uses the chiclet keyboard feels way too mushy and soft to type into. The 2nd Inspiron 13R you mentioned are RM19xx so its around the same price bracket

Worth it IMO, the old Inspiron keyboard which don't uses the chiclet keyboard feels way too mushy and soft to type into. The 2nd Inspiron 13R you mentioned are RM19xx so its around the same price bracket
*
I agree on the keyboard part laugh.gif
The new ones really nice yo, but must 1st remove the plastic covering the keyboard hehe~
Hmmm in between i5-480m and i3-2330m, which one would you choose?
For me I guess I'd still go for the latter, less heat laugh.gif

I'll take the SB i3 too. Lower power consumption and less heat would win the day for me.

hmmm, any netbooks worth to get nowadays??

I wanna get one for Uni use but don't wanna waste so much money on it since my laptop is just 1 year++ only...

Looking at 1015B but C-50 seems not powerful enough...

I like the EOL'ed AO522 but the only downside is the 3-cell battery...

Hp-dm1z seems out of my budget... For that price, I'd rather top up a bit more and get x121e in UK which is much mroe powerful..

I was considering netbook previously, but finally decided to go for a full SB in V131. I really think 1.5ghz atom / fusion are not fast enough for running Visual Studio, VMware, etc. My current CPU is i5-460m, 3dmark06 = 3k, e-350 = 1k. SuperPI (16) for i5 = 16, e-350 = 51.

So, the e-350 is like 1/3 of the speed of i5-460m, that could make me go crazy...

*warning* those are simply estimation. really dont know how it feel when using e-350, may be it's not that bad for normal browsing...

I have never used an atom or c-50.. Is it really that slow? I just need it to jot down lecture notes or view lecture slides.. I know the resolution would be a downside but just have to cope with it since it's cheap.. Rm799 is really worth it cause any normal netbooks in Uk are at least rm1000 Even after converted..

Lol tablet is more expensive and I can't type fast enough with it.. I want a tablet nevertheless, but can never find a proper reason to want one... For me, netbooks are still a better choice over tablet for portble study purposes

Quick review:

-Flashy red
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

- Not as thin I expected! Due to the 6 cell battery. Yet, still thinner than my 3820tg.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

- The screen is better than I expected considering the low 180 nit brightness.

- Keyboard is comfy but the key feel like smaller...

Yes, both at Max brightness. It certainly does not look dull huh?

The hinge is a little easier to close and open then the 3820tg. It does shake (front and back) more if I 'poke' the screen. May be because of that, it does feel like a little loose. Contrary to 3820tg which open and close screen feel a little more tight.

Now updating and downloading prime85 + furmark

lee u sound "BIAN TAI"

http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Codec_Pac...date_d5347.html

http://www.download.hr/software-k-lite-cod...ack-update.html

but u need 7.7.0 cos this 7.7.2 update only. really fixed the playback issue. the color saturation r better than previously starting from 7.6.x version so on!

K-Lite Codec Pack Update 7.7.2
Changelog:

  • Updated ffdshow to revision 3964
  • Updated LAV Splitter to version 0.31 build 2011-08-08
  • Updated LAV Audio to version 0.31 build 2011-08-08
  • Updated Codec Tweak Tool to version 5.0.7

from my experience (in the past), all those codec are the source of problem in Explorer crashes, etc.

there are also some re-pack codec which has virus / backdoor... can't really trust them...

same issue! restart will fix it, so i suspect it was driver problem. but it's not! the pointer sometime will suddenly jump away.

if u have same problem, should call dell to come change it for u...
