so my best bet is to rid the roof of rattle and the mirror will follow suit? or is there a more direct way of killing the rattle of the mirror like putting sound deadening materials inside the mirror instead of the roof?

1) If the glass rattling & coz of noise, try apply silicone sealant around the glass & casing...
2) If the stand rattling & coz of noise, try apply double tape at stand plate & screw it back tightly..

you just need to take the mirror out from the holder....not the whole rear view mirror...
behind the mirror got a screw to adjust the fitness to the holder.

howie, you mean i need to take off the green screw only to get to the glass? i tried unscrewing the green screw but feels like nothing is loose so i put it back in, do i need to pry the covers open? i tried puling the red part towards the arrow but dont seem to be able to take it down. The green screw for mirror housing with holder/stand movement daa... like up/down/left/right.. there was no way to taken out Glass form it housing unless the glass install like side mirror glass. take it out from front lor.. slowly start from 1 side, use a thin but rigid plastic plate to peel the plastic around the corner. those plastic are not that hard, peel slowly till 1 side is out then it will be easy...
