4 steps, but my initial point was how many actual physical presses before getting to white balance that counts...
Normally I leave my menu to shooting menu so in my case measure is 4 while just tried again 5 for picture(as i forgot to press ok) not sure about others
1. Press and hold WB button 2. Turn dial to select PRE 3. Let go WB button (not sure if this is counted a step or not) 4. Hold WB button until it prompts to take a sample photo 5. Take the photo
cool faster than menu i use D5100 confirm can (must see pre blink blink to snap) edit: but only 1 setting can be used one time thnks CY !!!!!!

Sifu(s) lately i played alot of Pre WB, i can say my shoots now are much better, less lightroom adjustment for WB.
A noob question here: Is it advisable to print out grey card? if it is, is there a standard colour to follow or any grey colour would do? As I did some reading in DP forums they mention grey is better than white card O.O(I blur already)
Regarding this topic, I remember the metering is based on 18% Grey reading this from somewhere. So meaning if you use a grey card, then you can use spot metering and just shoot in A/S mode.
Not to mention those grey card is sold as well.
ok, thnks for explaining . I guess I have to buy the gray card(n Q strap) in the upcoming photography expo
It's fine to print out a grey card, but make sure your paper surface isn't reflective or partially reflective. Else, it will make it less accurate. Try look for surrounding boxes/cards/hard plastics that are grey, a bit of trial and error is needed here. But most will be close enough.
Remember the video where I showed about the setting Custom WB with a white card, its actually double sided. One side white, one side grey. I DIY-ed from those VCR cassette sleeves. Very robust, water proof (unlike paper or cardboard), and i double it as a huge bounce card with velcro stuck on one of the sides to the back of my flash. Works better than those Gary Fong or Stofens with next to no cost at all. Whenever I need a Custom WB, pull down the card, shoot the white side, and stick it back on the flash. Voila!
A video I make as a marketing dept trainee using D5100, kit lens(because of Vr) and iso 1600. I need get some feedback . Certain part are long as my boss wants it that way

D5100 is the second compact dslr in line after D3100, it is just slightly bigger than the D3100, and hold way better performance, imo, it is well suited for girl too. Although i see no wrong why guy cant hold d5100, its light and compact very suitable for traveling light.
Agreed, with D5100 hang around your neck for like 5 hours no problem, no weight to be feel (in my case as I yet to own flash unit and battery grip)
Out of topic: A video I make recently make using Nokia N8 (using Nikon D5100 to record behind the scenes only). I need some critique

that's all. i roughly watch only since you said D5100 is hanging on neck for 5 hours will not have any feeling. wah, then it is really light **wan poison my dad with this fact then
1.The echo and wind, will do in close area next time 2.Cool will do the Q as text 3.I de-saturate the video via nokia camerapro app
Sure I pick light gear like d5100 as candid, stalking and street photography is my key area
why need desaturate? it is not interview a sad story what
Gatal a bit only(the dev app gave me the app too test), if I didnt de-saturate later my campus background look more crappy especially the first 30 sec haha
interview a grandmother can put straight black and white a story about life. the sad part can put that. then sweet part play colour lor good idea or not
True(this life story oh..), but only other footage is de-saturated, the interview part still colour. N8 colour reproduction in low light not so good thats why I opt to B&W. Nvm got another video coming up I'll try something different thnks for advise add: Most interview video like Chase jarvis interview video also B&W

Sifu(s) need some opinion on macro lens for my D5100 I have 2 lens to choose from (given with limited budget) - Tamron 90mm AS AF Di (lastest with build in motor, not sure with this statement as different site show 2 versions) F/2.8 - Nikon 85mm ED VR F3.5
I have being googling this but havent found answers like sharpness accuracy and AF speed. I hope someone can help me out here
I prefer 85/90 for working range with bugs (not incline w/ 105mm nikon, kill my pocket budget kaw kaw).
