Is it true that new car must drive slowly until ur first sevices. Probably around 80-90 km/h. I just wondering if it is true.

No need lar. Just vary your speed, don't try to drive constant speed for too long. My new car terus sapu 140km/h - 160km/h. And i believe they have already run in the engine a bit at factory.

Logic dictates that you be gentle with the new engines to enable the engine to break in properly
pushing it to the maximum might cause it burn out but i don't see that happening with new cars. in anycase, what's the harm of being gentle with your new car for the 1st 5000 km? |

This is a practice done for more than decades ago. Newly manufactured engine might have splinters trapped in the engine. The engine oil which might carry loose splinters will be changed in a short period of time as a mean to flush out the splinters. Hence, new vehicle is subjected to services as it reaches the first 1,000km mileage. Added on July 13, 2011, 9:38 am thats what i think. My fren said "dont bawak laju2 or the engine n piston will rosak quickly" Acceleration coupled with high speed travelling will caused the engine oil to rotate faster thus causing possible frictions between the engine inner surface and the splinters. Hence, no "unnecessary" speeding please. This post has been edited by felixwang: Jul 13 2011, 09:53 AM |

don't be too gentle to your engine while it's still new, just push it with different gears and different speed, it's ok. But to red-line it I am not sure though.

yes for safety side for prevent any human error such as no tighten some screws...
imagine your car parts falling off when u doing high speed... some more the brake system may no 100% working due to still new condition as the disc and pad no able to 100% "touch" with each others...... This post has been edited by gkl83: Jul 13 2011, 09:58 AM |

I read my car manual and it does mention a break in period. Specifically for the first 2000km drive at varying engine speeds but don't rev past 3500rpm or drive past 150km/h.

Usually most car manuals won't recommend more than 110km/h.Also, you can maybe run-in on a Dyno, the sosphicated way....just make sure u don't end up like this guy... |

Simple,
To break-in the new engine, just drive as you will normally drive lah.. If you are a fast and furious driver, then drive it hard. If you are a slow and steady driver, then drive it slow and steady. No need to drive it hard but in actual fact you will only drive it slow. No need to be so gentle if you like to press the pedal to the metal. New car and still in warranty right? then by all means drive it hard.. any problems just get back to SC and claim.. hahahha. |

Drive it like how you want it. Just don't crash it or crash into something else not belonging to you.

depend on what TS believe... if u think break-in is necessary, go ahead...
for me, i didnt do any break-in and low rev as possible on my myvi to save fuel, the best FC i can get is about 19km/L for the first few months... but now average can get 17km/L due to heavy foot bit... hence no engine failure issues within 4.5 years with my nanny driving style without proper engine break-in... |

actually for new car its better to drive the car hard
but not really hard like redline cuz the oil pan seal gasket seal, piston ring all those need to rev it for it to settle in or for it to be more tighten or something like that |

omg, this is one class debate. Never-ending discussion on this. The two school of thoughts swears by their own style. As for myself, i drove gently before 1st service
I know someone who swears by pushing his car to the redline |
