from my memory of the book (which was about 10 years ago) vs the movie, the book described the war between the 2 sides is so intense and the situation is SO dire and desperate for the good guys they nearly lost it, and if u read it you WILL BE OUT OF BREATH because the story is so engaging and INTENSE! it's like hanging on a cliff with NO WHERE TO GO BUT FALL!  the movie is disappointing because they made the battle TOO EASY, especially when the ghosts came out, swept the field in one round and they won the war just like that...i don't really remember there were ghosts in the book, it was 10 years ago and i've read other books in that time so my memory is blurry, anyone wants to verify this?  i like the twin towers the most because they really captured EVERYTHING from the book (barred a few details here and there which wasn't a big deal, like all the movies) especially the atmosphere, and the intense battle!  the return of the king was supposed to be TWICE AS INTENSE as Twin Towers, but they really tuned it down

The Ghost army bits is add-on by Fran Walsh and peter Jackson, although walk through the haunted mountain pass was in the book.

Additionally, in the book, the Elves army didn't come to help in the Two Towers, again, an addition done by Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson.

In my opinion, for the PG-13 movie, the horrors of war were quite well portrayed in the movie (decapitated heads being catapulted into the city of Gondor comes to mind).

FYI LOTR books are considered as literature already, it's a whole different league than the regular fantasy books

rowling's books are for 12 year old and below, although it doesn't say that but after reading it sometimes she thinks adults are idiots, or retarded...it may be dark at some point of the story, but it's so...light compared to other novels for adults, plus she made voldermort as the stupidest and sissiest baddy of all time, what kind of a baddy is that?  he's like Dr. Evil in Austin Powers, at least Dr. Evil is a comic and he makes u laugh, but the dude who shall not be named feels  doh.gif, especially when u know the ending, and i'll stop here and not spoil it for those who doesn't know yet

stormlcc,

there is without doubt tolkien's works are considered as literature.....after all he was the pioneer in a fantasy novel with a story that consisted of prophecies & quests.
honestly if his works were to be publish today......the books would just be as you mentioned 'regular fantasy books'.
but then he did his work at a time when no one really did and came out with an original story when no one else could and that is what make his works so special....
it's tough to come up with a new storyline nowadays as most had been done & tried.

but if you really want to try and read a fantasy novel with a difference, go for brandon sanderson, patrick rothfuss or r scott bakker.

if there is 1 work that i feel can be compared to tolkien.....it would be steven erikson's mazalan book of the fallen.

hence i will ask this question, what fantasy books can be compared to tolkien's lotr?

Nothing can be compared to LOTR.
But i strongly recommend 'Song of Ice & Fire' series.
And they are not children books.

As we are very astray from the topic.

I suggest that any discussion about fantasy book genre should be averted to LYN Book Club section, particularly in this thread.

Never read the books but how was the adaptation (Game of Thrones) to a mini series? I thought the series was great. How accurate was it to the books? blush.gif

Hi Snowfire64

Very excellent observation.

I've amended the header, hope you don't mind.

May I inquire, when was he last time you read the LOTR books?

Have you read the Christopher Paoline's Eragon books?

Did you like the movie adaptation?

Stephen King's Dark Tower series has the potential but of course will have to see how the first movie turns out...

The John Carter of Mars books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The first movie John Carter directed by Andrew Stanton (A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, Wall-E) will be released 9 March 2012.

i read LOTR probably abt 18 yrs ago....luv it at that time.
then i tried to read it again when the movies came out...but i couldn't.....
honestly tolkien writings are like telling a story to children....too many details.......and i cant stomach it!
but i luv the movies.....

i dont go for teen fantasy books like paolini....and the movie was quite bad.

tis costly to turn a fantasy book into a movie.....lots of cgi involved. in today's economy....very few would take the risk but that does not mean the end of fantasy movies....

Can't wait for "John Carter". Andrew Stanton's vision and passion for the project is just like he had for "Wall-E". In fact, it seems a teaser trailer is on its way when "Hallows Part 2" is released.

The best fantasy movies I've seen are undoubtedly LOTR Trilogy. I didn't watch the first two films in cinema for reasons unknown/lack of cinema outings back then but when I did end up watching the first two, no way on earth was I not going to watch the final movie. J.R.R. Tolkien clapped his hands in his grave. I know this for a fact. Maybe. Ended up buying the Extended Edition DVDs for all three movies. No money for BD though... he he. You are not watching the movie, you're in it. And that's fantasy.

Thanks for changing the header. Then we could widen our discussion here.

I've read the books about 4 years back including the Hobbit and Silmarillion. So far, the Hobbit is the simplest but everything is important and thus the decision to put it into two movies is highly anticipated by me of the putcome. Silmarillion is heavy with elven and middle earth histories going way back to the Valla ages. I doubt the book would make an interesting movie if adapted.

Yes, I have read the Inheritance series and currently waiting for book 4 which I hope to be released this November. I must admit the books is enjoyable but on the critics view, its closely adopted the 'Star Wars Saga' mechanics which 'I am your father' dogma trails the plot. The elven tounge and the true name also very simillar to the Eathsea Cycle by Ursula K Le Guin (which the movie actually jumbles up book 1 and two and made it into a horrific adaptation).

The movie adaptation was bad for me as the story should concentrate on how the dragon grows and not on the emo teenage hero which I think was casted poorly(similar to Camelot's Arthur). The only good about the movie was that Brom's character was portrayed. The rest is just meh.

Oh, and I do mind of the soundtrack in movies because Fantasy movies should not have Pop songs doh.gif (like Avril's in Eragon, Knights Tale, and metal songs in the upcoming Immortal). Those music just ruin everything. Eg;

A knight goes into battle and then suddenly there's a metal song accompanied it. doh.gif

Fantasy should have symphonies and instrumental, if they want vocal, they should include songs sang by Enya and similar artist. wink.gif

Another great suggestion. I tend to think John Carter of Mars leans more to sci-fi rather then sword and sorcery. Truth to be told, Frank Fazatte's covers had always given me "fantasies"!! laugh.gif

Apart from the no sorcery at this point, if fantasy materials get life on TV, Game Of Thrones is a good example on how to do it!!

I've never read Silmarillion....

Yes, I'm cautiously waiting for the Hobbits movies. Nowadays, every time I look forward to a particular movie, it BOMBS spectacularly (for me anyway). So I try not to built myself up too much about a project.... Movies that I seriously like so far in 2011 is... Insidious...

Yes, the Inheritance Cycle is very influence by movies that Christopher Paoline had enjoyed. Do bare in mind he is pretty young and basically self published is first book. I was disappointed that he decided to change the books from a trilogy to a cycle... sad.gif

The Eragon movie was poorly adapted, period.

As for sound track, i didn't mind the heavy metal song they used in the background for the dragon slaying sequence in Sucker punch!! laugh.gif I know, I know not many people like Sucker Punch, I do, some part of the movie I thought was well done!! nod.gif

Thank you for sharing and please come back!! laugh.gif

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow 7.2 (2011)

It is FINALLY here...

The last Harry Potter movie

Many a person had lament about how dry and dialoguey Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow 7.1 and is hoping that the second part would be more action oriented.

Good news, IT IS!!!

Almost ALL the good bits in the second half of the book is in this one.

Am watching here in HD now and it is still wonderful!!

What made the movie worked is Mr. Tumnus (James McAvoy) and Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley)

Whereas the other movie didn't have anything near to that!!

If you haven't seen this go see it! smile.gif
