It is my firm belief that after Harry Potter 7.2 and Hobbit 1 & 2, movie companies will stop making fantasy movies....
Eragon BOMBED
The Golden Compass crashed and burnt.
The Chronicles of Narnia The Voyage of Dawn Treader didn't do particularly well in the box office. And I don't think they would work on another
Please bare in mind, when I say fantasy, I mean sword and sorcery not Giant Blue Aliens and Spacecraft.
What do you think?
Opinions?
P.S. Amendment, there is a Conan the Barbarian and Immortals are coming out this year. And Clash of the Titans 2 next. Whether those are well accepted, remains to be seen...
Additionally, after Red Riding Hood, I shudder to think what they will do for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and also Snow White and the Huntsman (a trilogy, REALLY!!!!!????????)

man, i just wanted to discuss with you how i missed Lord of the Rings man. Then this thread was created. by you?? Hahaha, tomorrow i'll share my opinion. Wanna sleep
Well, by looking at the trend now, super heroes and alien invasion movies are certainly on the roll now.
With The Hobbits ended in 2013, I reckon there would be some announcement next year.
There are still a lot of fantasy books that can be adapted, but by looking at the success of adaption of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire into a TV series, filmmakers might just opt for a big budget series rather than a movie. Also, series have their Pilot episode first to test the market first.
I think there's still a future for it. Usually these fanstasy stuff are released almost like a seasonal thing. When one comes out, a whole bucket load of them will be released. But as snowfiire said, actions heroes is currently the flavor of the month but comes Hobbit i'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more fanstasy stuff. But imo, the next big fantasy title will be World of Warcraft. It has millions of followers and is one of the most successful if not the most successful mmorpg in the world. Then there's the Star Wars tv series which i;m eager to see. To be honest, i'll be happy with just having the game of thrones series for the next 5 years

Hey, what happened to your Avatar (u usually use House M.D. and then you change it to something else and now??)
Yes, I miss Lord Of The Rings too. Am currently watch The Two Towers Extended Edition in HD!!!!! *Bliss*
Glad my watching LOTR and then thinking to myself, Gosh, after Hobbit, nothing like THAT would be made anymore, hence this thread, help you to express, I Miss LOTR!!
lol the topic title is kinda misleading isn't it? Makes it sound like there will not be any more and its confirmed. Instead, its just your opinion
This genre has always taken a back seat to the others, that's no surprise. While I would love to see a bunch of fantasy books adapted for the big screen, I wouldn't hold my breath :/
Lord of the Ring Trilogy is one of a kind, you have to wait for years for any similar movie to come. Early 2000's was very great man. With an introductory of Fantasy movie like LOTR and Harry Potter. Still can remember how crazy i was when watching LOTR and HP. Hobbit gonna be an epic, god knows how sad i was when LOTR Return of the King completed the trilogy and with Sam following the Elves along with the Rings Carrier left me wonder whether there will be a special film for the Hobbit and yes, it will be a reality. Gladiator was great.
Bridge to Terabithia was good, Alice in Wonderland was not bad also. Clash of the Titans? Not sure because i didn't watch it yet. 300 was good but donno why i think it's more towards a style-war movie or some sort like that. I didn't feel the 'fantasiness' from it . And was never a fan of Narnia. Eragon was... i kinda like Eragon but.. but. And WTF happened to Robin Hood?
Conan the Barbarian will be premiered in 2011 but is this some kind of B-Grade films or something because not much hypes from it. Judging from the poster, it looks like 300. lol
And i'm sure there are alot of fantasy story from book/novel will be adapted to film, just make sure Peter Jackson will involve in them all . King Kong was a massive film as big as LOTR but the story could not be prolonged hence there are no trilogy like LOTR.
And here hoping for the Last Airbender: Second Chapter and the next Pirates of the Carribean gonna be great. At Stranger tides was just a 'filler' film i think waiting for an epic version of POTC.
Fancy a Cave of Golden Roses Reboot? Highlander, Excalibur, Wizards of the lost kingdom, Dragonslayer, Beastmaster, Mortal Combat (lol?) And i'm still hoping for a 2000s version of Cinderella & 7 Dwarves, Snow white and Pinocchio!!!
I think any fantasy movies gonna turn great (less know or well known fantasy story) as long as it will be done in proper way and throw in huge effort like Peter Jackson did. Or you need dragon in it to define fantasy?

you give us a different director for Last Airbender and we'll talk.
I prefer more of Spiderwick Chronicles than Bridge to Terabithia because of the ending. As Mov_freak was specifically pointing towards fantasy with 'sword and sorcery' modern fantasy which includes both would suffice I think
All of dungeons and dragons movies are B-grade movies which are a dissapointment to me. Eragon was great but the main character should be change which greatly remind me of how weak is the cast for Arthur in Camelot. I didn't get to see Last Airbender movie but I finish all of the cartoons which are totally awesome. The minute I heard they compile complete chapter in a movie saddened me and I would skip it to avoid destroying my fun in the cartoon series.
I hear there's going to be a Warcraft movie which Vin Diesel is casted to be Thrall? Old news tho, don't know whether its being cancelled or not.
You got me wrong brother. I am not hoping for Last Airbender but i'm hoping the next chapter of Last Airbender gonna be great as i am a fan of the cartoon series. Read the whole sentence please. The 2nd chapter still gonna be shown whether half of the world's population hate it or not.

And Noob13 Luv you reaction
I have to agree with maxizanc that AirBender wasn't a total disaster and wouldn't mind giving Mr Night a chance to do 2nd part to redeem himself.
Just my opinion, no need to crucify...
Yup, i like Airbender too but i think the movie don't need to be all that serious, just slot in kiddy-jokes by Ang and his friends lah please.

Haven't watch Spiderwick Chronicles yet But I'm hoping they will make Warcraft and God of Wars too Any ideas on why Immortals and Clash of the Titans (didn't watch yet too) looks similar to God of Wars?
About Last Airbender, i think most of the flaws was from the selection of the actors.

No, I'm willing to bet it's not gonna happen. The movie may have made money, but the reviews were so damaging that the whole world will probably boycott the sequel. Also the actors are young, especially Noah Ringer, and a franchise starring kid actors needs to be constantly in production so that the actors don't grow up too fast. It's been a year since the last movie and there's been no news, so I'm pretty certain the sequel is not happening.

No, the flaws were in the writing, direction, and entire approach to adapting the source material.

Really? I thought they already comfirmed the 2nd and the 3rd. The 2nd will be released in 2012 amd said to be a bit darK?
i think it's a question of storytelling. in my opinion, the only fantasy author worth reading is Tolkien.
all the others are just crap, including Rowling. There's no depth. They are for the minds of children.
Even the LOTR trilogy barely scratches the surface of the story of middle earth. i thought the films were ok only
Fuuu. I butthurted reading this, but can't blame u also, i didn't read the book . But on Rowling, it's depend on the directors though since they change directors frequently. I like the darker version of last 4 movies of Harry Potter by David Yates. I prefer it dark.

well i guess it's hard to compress a good fantasy realm into 2 hours of film, or 12 hours!
The Last Airbender was supposed to be fun. Even if its bad like Pirates 4, it would still be fun.
So yeah, i was bitter on that because of the direction. Not to say like movies like Batman didn't profit from being serious, but there's just a certain way for some stories to be told. The Last Airbender by Shyamalan was sadly not it.

Sorry for the late reply. Was very busy at work today so did not reply until I can give it the full attention it deserve.
Lord of the Ring is probably a one in a million. Reason is two fold
1) J.R.R Tolkien wrote it VERY late in his life (I think he was fifty plus) and the fact that he had the whole universe planned (the different language for the different race, the geography of the Hobbit universe etc), proves that the details were thought out before he even put pen to paper. There is also evidence that he first draft which went nowhere he literally threw that out and started from scratch!! On his death he left behind SO MUCH MATERIAL about the Hobbit universe, his nephew, whom I assume inherited his works, spent goodness knows how much time compiling the said material into the LOTR Encyclopedia!! One word dedication.
2) Farn Walsh and Peter Jackson obviously have a love affair with the books. They know it like the back of their hands. In fact they know it SO well they were able to change/add/remove elements from Tolkien book in such a way, it works as the movie and STILL feel Tolkien. That is BY no means an easy feat, and yet they achieve it. Again, one word dedication.
Which bring me to the point, in which so many big budget movies in the pass 10 years, FAIL. They are so in tune into give the shock and awe, the razzle dazzle and the smoke and mirrors, they had forgotten that the film media primary function, is to TELL a TALE!! If the tale SUCKS, the movie sucks!! Simple as that!!
I do not believe any of the Arabian Nights stories will get a book to screen treatment, because of the middle east incidents (American are sick about the middle east and they don't want to go to a cinema to be entertain and be reminded of that). SO DON'T hold your breath.
I've always felt Robert E. Howard material (Conan, Solomon Kane and Kull) had never been fully realised and was VERY let down by Solomon Kane. Let hope Conan perks interest in his works.
I'm not sure I can stand another King Arthur movie (after the HORRIBLE Camelot). The one with Clive Owen is pretty good. (minus the sorcery though )
I love the Avatar The Last Air bender TV Series, and thought that the movie is passable. I also think the selection of the actors were crucial, and the lead was just a tad TOO emo...
So in short, for goodness sake, if there are ANY directors/writers out there reading this, it all about the story, Story, STORY and DEDICATION.
At the very least you can take pride in your work.
Sorry for the long windedness
