I also noticed something about the cruise control. If u set the cruise at 110kmph, your FC is ok. But if u set at around 140kmph above, then your fuel consumption is really increases as the car will try to maintain the speed by frequently downshifting to 5th gear. So if you wanna maintain high speed, best would be to not use the cruise. Is it the same with your cars as well?
*
No such issues with my car, it's constant 7th gear all the way. The rev counter rises when going uphill though, but that's to be expected. Consumption will also surely increase with higher speed but that's also expected.

Maybe Koreans have some odd programming logic with their gears.

If your rev counter rises when going uphill isn't that a sign of gear downshifting?

Your car can only maintain 7th gear all the way if it has enough power to do so. If it doesn't have enough power to maintain going uphill on 7th then the gearbox will downshift.
*
Yes, but I haven't driven on that steep a hill at such high speeds to know whether it will downshift or not. It probably will but so far I've not seen my car downshift a gear while maintaining speeds of 130km/hr or higher.

The listed time for 0 to 100 is 8.7s to 9s. Not bad, I actually expected it to do it in 10.5s or so

Thread seems dead. Gotta jump start it again i guess.  biggrin.gif

New 2013 Ford Focus launched yesterday. I would say the Titanium Plus (Sedan) is a real bargain for just RM128,888 (OTR):

1) ABS, EBD, TCS, ESP
2) 6 airbags
3) Keyless Entry & Push Start
4) Dual Zone auto aircon
5) SYNC audio system with voice command
6) 9 speakers
7) Leather seats
8) Power driver seat
9) Active Grille Shutter system
10) Torque Vectoring Control  (TVC)
11) Active Park Assist (auto parking)
12) Active City Stop (auto braking)
13) Blind Spot Info System (BLIS)
14) Additional curtain airbags
15) Automatic Bi - Xenon HID lights
16) Cruise control
17) Rain sensing auto wipers
18) Power sunroof

Not to mention the powerful 2.0L TI-VCT GDI engine with 168Hp & 202Nm torque. Plus Ford's new 5 year / 200,000km warranty. And we all know that Ford's driving dynamics and ride handling is really good.

With this, the Ford Focus has raised the bar again in terms of specs on offer. Beats even the more expensive K5, Peugeot 508 and even the Japanese D segments.  rclxms.gif
*
Yes I agree. It's a real good bargain. My relative is looking at it right now. It even makes our 2nd car Civic purchase look poor compared to this but what done is done.

I really cannot believe Toyota is just sitting idly by while their competition is wiping them out with good safety specs and car features. Even Honda is waking up from its slumber!

Continental sports contact 5 is the default for VW Passat, it works great so far. Maybe you can try that

Toyota is idle because, really, why shouldn't they?

Toyota HAS better specs for their cars. If they wanted to they could start selling a 10 airbag Camry with VSC, relatively modern engine and tons of features tomorrow (ok, in a month or two). Right now they don't feel the need to, and they won't change their cars until they think they have to (which isn't a big problem, as long as the cars stay reliable and they don't wait too long (i.e. other manufacturers get traction). They can any time say "hey, now we have auto parking and 10 airbags too" and the uncles will stay with Toyota.

The Focus looks tempting, yes. Auto City Stop will probably only work when not driving above 30, 50, something like that. Too bad. It would be cool to have such a feature that works at every speed, not sure why it isn't possible.
*
Indeed, they sell their cars based on market research on what the consumer wants and within the requirements of the local traffic law. If their cars continue to sell well despite the mediocre specs, then they'll continue to do so. If it doesn't, they'll start throwing in "upgrades" to bring the car up to par. And if that fails to push sales, then they'll know they've hit a price ceiling and will adjust their pricing in order to jump start sales again.

Right now they've got reliability and strong after sales as their main selling point and that alone satisfy a lot of people out there.

VW's - let down by mechanical reliability, small service network and poor after sales service.
KIA/Hyundai - suffers from poor brand image, unknown resale value and smaller service network
Ford - Lack of quality finish, poor after sales service and small service network
Peugeot - reliability issue, poor resale value, poor after sales service and small service network

Until their competitors up their game further, they won't be too concerned yet.

Realistically you will lose about 15 to 20k. There's no incentive to buy 2nd hand at all if the price is close to a new car price.

I think if you sell it off at about 130k ~ 135k, it should be no problem.

So far I still like the Camry without the bodykit. It looks nice and better than previous generation, just my preference and taste. Interior wise, Camry is just nice and I think best in D-class segment for me.

Anyway while booking my Hilux, my SA says the Camry 2.0 is not worth to buy. He say wait for the facelift as Toyota will update with new engine and possibly new gearbox. Just rumors.  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
It could happen, but I just don't think it will happen here. Most likely Asean countries will get the shaft until say 2017/2018 at the earliest when a new Camry will be introduced. The next generation Corolla which is due out next year is not likely to use any new engines unless they delay the introduction till 2014.

QUOTE
Now, in a major overhaul of its lineup, Toyota is playing catchup. It will introduce a new direct-injection engine next year and follow with a downsized turbocharged powerplant --its first--in 2014. It is also committing to continuously variable transmissions across its range of small- to medium-sized cars

...

Key elements of Toyota's plan:

-- A 2.5-liter direct-injection, Atkinson cycle engine, to be deployed first in hybrids in 2013.

-- A 2.0-liter downsized turbo-charged engine in 2014.

-- A shift to CVTs in small- to mid-sized vehicles.

-- More six- and eight-speed automatic transmissions for larger cars.

By the time these new engines reach Malaysia, other car makers would have introduced more advanced tech.
*
Hmmm, doubtful. Realistically, engine technology between major auto manufacturers aren't too far apart from each other unless you are some 3rd world country manufacturer *cough*Proton*cough*. Toyota is cash rich and has a huge R&D department. I'm certain they regularly buy the cars of their rivals and take them apart to study their technology before coming out with a different form of implementation.

As the article has already said, they are far ahead in hybrid technology but have fallen behind in petrol and diesel technology. Based on consumer numbers, hybrid sales will continue to increase with EV now coming in the picture. I think they got their strategy right, as long as they don't fall too far behind, they can still count on people who are brand loyal to carry them over the next 2 to 3 years.

The problem is that Toyota and Honda have fairly modern vehicles, sometimes even the same as what they sell here. But by the time it reaches our shores they have taken out everything that makes these cars modern and competitive.

I would not be surprised if Toyota has studies that show that this is what sells cars in Malaysia. Give them a vehicle that is too modern, and people will not buy it since so much can go wrong. Just look at the discussions about hybrids here. People are SCARED of buying a hybrid, because after many years the battery needs to be replaced (or so they think). As a result the hybrids from Toyota are as well spec'ed as they are in more developed countries. Who buys a hybrid is not scared of technology.
*
If we had stricter emission laws, that problem could be easily rectified. The same goes with our safety standards.

AFAIK the 6 speed DSG is fine, 7 speed has problems when used inappropriately (main tip was I think to not shift from N to D while rolling). The 170 hp tune of the 1.4 TSI was AFAIK very problematic, so much so that VW pulled them from the market for a while. The others should be fine, but of course not many have done really a lot of miles yet. But I doubt these engines will fail before the 200k km mark, and for most of us that is more than enough.

I'm not sure why people don't bother about safety here. Some do, obviously, but many don't. I mean I can understand that when you spend 40k on a new car you can't expect much and you don't have much choice. But the Camry is at a price range where the owner can clearly afford something better. And someone who can afford a car that expensive is probably also not suicidal or thinks his life is worthless and wants to die.

Maybe people here can enlighten me. What is the thinking of buying a Camry today? Why don't you care about your life?
*
A friend of mine that went to a Toyota focus group held very recently for the new Camry told me most people listed the following as priorities in selecting a car.

Brand power
Resale value
After sales service/ ease of service

According to him, in a room of 8. Only 1 person listed safety as a critical requirement when buying a car. Brand power was always the first thing that came out from everyone's mouth. In other words, a lot of Malaysians prefer to have a decent branded car than being in a car that protect them from serious accidents. Go figure :/

Camry 2.5V review

http://paultan.org/2012/10/15/driven-toyot...t-drive-report/

Added on October 15, 2012, 3:48 amWeird. In this thread when a Camry involved in an accident, people would say "see. I have told you so. ..."

But, when a Korean car involved in an accident like in the video posted ealier, people would say "nothing that we can do if the car is driven at this speed."

Some forumers even pray for the death of a Toyota owner.
*
I've read it, the article highlights the best features of the new Camry which are:

- Very high levels of Comfort
- Strong brand image, executive feel
- Very good resale value

A pity the article never mentioned how under-equipped the car is in terms of safety features compared to its rivals.

Anyway, the point was never about cursing Toyota owners, it was always to highlight the fact that safety should always be of paramount importance, particularly if you have a family and kids. In a nutshell, why wait until something bad happens then only regret? For many people, it will always never happen but even so, prevention is always better than cure.

people dont get it dont they...
and i am gonna say this again...

toyota knows their asean camry is getting whack left, right, center, top, bottom but they dont care...
please dont think for a moment that toyota is not aware that their product is getting whack from everywhere... they dont have one of the best marketing team for no reason...
they are not the biggest car makers in the world for no reason...

after all, those that whack the camry is not their intended market anyway... so why would they care....

my money is that their intended market wont even bother looking at what some of the graduates from university of lowyat is saying....

after all, toyota already know what is their intended market for their camry... its definitely not for the car enthusiast or "enthusiast" market and frankly speaking, how big is the car enthusiast market anyway?

go on bashing.... the camry will still sell.... and there is a reason why they are selling and selling in numbers that korean can only dream of..
smile.gif

P/S - i do find it funny at how some of the post is heading... really shows something....

While what you say is indeed true, the younger generation will replace the gen X that preceded before them and so on and so forth. Can they afford to keep up with this sort of attitude with more and more people getting connected and more educated about the kind of products they are buying these days?

Our parents might fall under die hard Toyota/Honda supporters but eventually we will replace them as parents to our children one day. During which, will you still stay a die hard Toyota supporter when you know how overpriced and underspeced their new product is?

They will continue to sell for now, but they better stay on the ball if they want to continue to do well. Right now, they lost me as a repeat customer and they can forget about me being their customer again in 4 to 5 years from now if they keep selling stripped down overpriced cars.

Dear F&F anti-Toyota activists,

It is not going to be very helpful if you all only spread the hatrades towards Toyota and New Camry owners here. I can sense the gigantic ambition and vision from you all to make the driving atmosphere in this Bolehland a safer one!  notworthy.gif

May I suggest here that perhaps you all should organize a public strike,  official press conferences (of course, don't forget to invite some political figures as well),  assemble some demonstration exercise in front of every Toyota branch in Bolehland, to exhibit your anger and the utmost importantly, bring the message across the whole nation of Bolehland, or even the whole mankind and humanity!  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

Oh ya, don't forget to project those who buy new Camry as treasonous act towards his family, loved ones, the F&F forumers and mankind! They shall not be forgiven!  vmad.gif

Just my 2 cents !
*
I don't hate them, but I have certainly showed my displeasure by not buying their products and got myself a car from a different manufacturer. If they continue to sell stripped down products in a few years from now when it is time for me to change my car then I will continue to refuse buying their products then.

Nothing hits harder than going for their bottom line. Its the most practical way to send a strong message.

Actually if you noticed, Toyota owners in Malaysia don't talk much about their cars online. Even the nation's most popular non-national segment car, Toyota Vios, the buzz and talk about the car is seriously lacking

Now clocked at 10K++ km.

[attachmentid=3188400]

BTW, last Saturday I saw a new shiny K5 (AJA xxxx) stopped in the middle of the road (east-west highway), after a sharp corner, on top of the mountain with hazard light switched on. Breakdown maybe?  whistling.gif

Luckily, even though my XV50 was not equipped with whatever special gadget that, that K5 have, it was able to dodged that K5.  sweat.gif

But that's not something to be proud of. In the first place, there's no reason for the 2.5V Camry to even cost so much, the more offending issue is that they remove so many features compared to the overseas model. Depends on how you want to inteprete why they do this I guess, but from my point of view - I find Toyota/UMW action rather offensive.

My wife's old Honda city tires also blew out before. I don't think tires blowing out has anything to do with the mechanics of the car.

Its pointless explaining to him. Despite all our efforts, its obvious that he does not see the importance of the VSC system. He chooses to use a breakdown of a K5 (which could be a mechanical failure or even something as common as running out of fuel) as an excuse to show that his Camry could 'avoid' despite not having VSC. Its clear that he has not bothered to read up on VSC and how the system works. Thus talking to him is pointless as ure basically dealing with a person who isnt bothered about changing his mindset. Pity.

But i wanna share this experience of mine which just happened about 2.5hrs ago. I was driving from KL to Ipoh at about 150kmph and suddenly my rear tyre blew out. This wasnt a gradual loss of air. It was a total immediate blowout. My tire was torn 90% along the rim. I was in the midst of overtaking a trailer just before Gopeng (2 lanes) when it happened. I thought i was about to slam into the guardrail but luckily in a split second the Stability Control engaged and i was able to manoeuvre to safety. There was really no space for me to do a counter steer due to the close proximity of the trailer so im really lucky the stability control system engaged in time. This is my first experience with the system and i must say it worked perfectly.
*
It's not the VSC that makes me pissed. It just doesn't even make sense to pay RM184k for a car that is almost stripped bare bones on essential safety and convenience features. Even more baffling are people actually willing to pay 160k of their hard-earned money for a completely barebones 2.0G car when better options such as the Passat and 508 are available for almost the same amount of money and those Camry owners are all W or B plates.

The only justification I can think of buying a Camry right now is for those people who stay in an area where there's no VW/Peugeot/Mazda/Ford 3S center near them (within 40 mins travel time), otherwise... why?

Let me guide you on why this is happening. Firstly let me inform you that I have 2 VW cars at home. A golf gti and a polo tsi. Lets put things straight, vw , peugeot , hyundai and kia nowadays give very good warrantys and specs ,5 years warranty,, blablabla. But have you ever claimed warranty from them? Do you know how difficult it is to claim warranty?

Its not as simple as bringing your car in to VW SC and wahlah, they change the parts for u on the spot. First they check , then if spare part is not available, you hv to wait! My previous eos 2.0 had to wait 2 months for the stupid ECU board cuz of their inefficiency. VW , peugeot, ford parts are all damn blardy expensive and difficult to get if they dont have stock.

Yes they give warranty, but its a waste of time, money, and effort just to claim warranty.

On the other hand, japanese cars have an abundant of spare parts. Easy to maintain and easy to claim warranty. You people keep harping on specifications of the camry . Low specs lah, expensive lah, but the thing is people still buy! Its because its such an easy car to maintain. And you wouldnt give a rats arse anymore about the so called specs when you have owned a toyota. Its such an easy car to own and maintain. Sometimes, you dont even hv to mk an appointment . Just walk in to the SC.

I go to vw, every single day i want to service is full and i have to book 2-3 weeks in advance!  doh.gif

Pls understand the story and understand the fact that not everyone is so particular about those minor specification differences. Its about a total ownership experience!
*
I've actually owned 2 previous Toyota and is also very experienced with the previous generation Camry servicing. Yes, I agree. It is really very easy when you own a Toyota, all 3 cars are very fuss free and problem free. I've never really had any major problems with those cars during the years of owning those cars. Whatever problems I had were rectified very quickly and professionally so kudos to the Toyota service team. Servicing, yes, it was also very easy as well but I've never had any success walking in and always had to make my appointment at least a week in advance if I wanted to get the date that I needed to service my car. All in all, the ownership experience was very positive, this I can vouch from personal experience.

As for the VW, our family actually have a 2010 Polo TSI, my current Passat and a 2010 Audi Q5. All of which share the same VW engine and uses DSG double clutch gearbox. I'm sorry you had a poor ownership experience with VW but my ownership so far has been rather positive. I've actually never had any problems with the gearbox for the Polo but more with the loud wiper noise instead. The Passat has clocked 9k mileage since July and its so far so good. There's no loss of power like you so claimed in your other thread for VW engines. As for the Q5, also problem free so far although the Euromobil servicing is really very far from being top class. Although I haven't serviced my own car yet, the other cars - nothing to complain at all. Hopefully, I won't have to go through what you did in the future.

Now if you talk about driver satisfaction. I say this, although my experience with Toyota has been very positive - driving their cars has always made me wish it had this or that when better specced cars drive past. Handling and comfort is alright but power is always lacking when I need that extra oomph to overtake. This applies to both the Vios and Altis that I previously owned. The XV40 Camry which I used to drive every now and then was an exception, although handling wasn't very sharp, it had the comfort, refinement and power. Unfortunately, it was still a rather dull car to drive.

With my current ride, although it isn't perfect - aside from adaptive cruise control and that new Audi style daytime running LED lights, there isn't much else that I want to have, I'm actually very happy driving the car as power, comfort and handling is very much inline with my expectations.
