Okies..... Just a quick run down for those interested....
Those looking for a Classic rock style overdrive (think AC/DC), go with an Overdrive pedal.... something like a Boss SD-1 or the Digitech Bad Monkey If you want a distortion that has more of a classic metal feel (Zakk Wylde, The Darkness, Slash)..... try out the Dunlop/MXR ZW-44 pedal that is fed through a high gain distortion amp or you can try out the SD-1 or Bad Monkey through a dirty amp as well..... Another alternative to achieving that sound is using a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal or the Digitech Hot Head pedal... which is a pure distortion pedal.... that doesn't need to pass through a dirty amp. If you want something of a Nu-Metal *urgh* style "chug" (Slipknot, Disturbed, Korn), then there's no greater pedal then the Boss MT-2 "Metal Zone" pedal..... but that will just suck your tone DRY.... Other Alternatives are the Dimebag Distortion from Dunlop/MXR and Digitech's Death Metal pedal. If you do have the extra cash..... try out Digitech's The Weapon which basically takes Dan Donegan (from Disturbed) famous sounds from their hit songs and combines it all in one pedal. I've heard this before and I can say that it's suitable for ANY kind of Hard Metal..... not just disturbed songs. You can find more info on these pedals from http://www.digitech.com, http://www.jimdunlop.com or http://www.bossus.com next up..... Wah's!!! True...... ok.... retract my statement....... DON'T use the Metal Zone....... Get the Dimebag Distortion or the Metal Head instead

If you want the EXACT sounds like Hendrix, you're better off buying the Jimi Hendrix Experience Pedal from Digitech......
If you want something with that 70s Hippy Rock..... then yes.... a Fuzz Face would do just fine. |

Good luck finding the ZW-45..... really..... if you can find it... let me know.... I'm still looking for it.
And the Zw-44...... yeah...... it's freakin' awsome...... I use it to boost the Tube-Amp emulation on the GFX-5.... and wow... it can shake up the whole room..... Not only that.... it's great for just general purpose blues style overdrive..... Like for Gary Moore's Still Got The Blues...... I use a delayed clean..... and then use the overdirve to just boost the signal..... Even if the overdrive is set on low...... it's just great for a signal booster.... |

ALOT..... you have to put down at least 50-70%..... and that's IF they can bring it in.
And the Zw-45...... it can be a quiet little blues crunch.......... right up to a Jet Engine that's on Steroids...... |

Wah..... Man.. this is an old thread...
Already have both the ZW-45 and ZW-44 since my last post here..... Marilyn Manson Sweet Dreams? Best wah for Metal is still (to me) hands down the Crybaby from Hell..... should be around the RM800 range if you can find it. Very customizable, amazing sweep range and looks totally bad ass. I got the Wylde Wah because I'm a Zakk Wylde fanatic...... and I don't like messing with the settings all that much. |
