Even if the Gapps installer does not prompt you to install the Google applications, you should still be able to find and install all the Google applications you want in the market, e.g. Gmail, Maps.

You can't install any apps from the market? Did you set up your Google account on the phone?

Weird, maybe need to clear the 'Market' data/cache under Settings/Applications/Manage applications/All.

For installing APK files, check if you have 'Unknown sources' enabled (checked) under Settings/Applications.

Indeed CM7 has an FM radio app, and so does MIUI too, if I am not mistaken. Whether it works properly, on the other hand, I have not tried because I don't use or need it (I remove it after every nightly install).

MarketAccess (you need to be rooted).

Filesystem = same as far as I know
Battery usage = probably about the same
Release frequency = every night for CM7 (auto-buildbot nightly release) while MIUI is a bit less often (referring to galnetmiui)

Try both and see which you like more.

For me, it's the best ROM for SGS. Based on my experience so far, it's super fast, virtually no lag at all, gps locks quickly and accurately, very stable, daily updates are released, battery life is acceptable, it has no samsung touchwiz layer and apps - feels very plain android (some people consider this ugly), 3G and wifi and bluetooth work fine etc.

Some downsides:

1. You lose the Samsung video player with native hardware acceleration/decode (i.e. smooth) MKV and AVI playback.
2. FM Radio probably works, but is pretty buggy and limited for now.
3. If you're not using a big extra capacity battery on your phone, the battery consumption may be too much for you.
4. Compass doesn't work (not sure about this, never used it before)
5. A new nightly update sometimes brings new bugs or reintroduces old previously fixed bugs.
6. It's not the final version, the ROM keeps changing and improving day by day, I don't know if or when a final release will come.
7. No telco-based video call feature so far unless you use apps like Tango.

For all the Samsung goodness, I still have my Galaxy Tab, so I just want my phone to be fast and allow me to do calls, 3G data, light GPS and catch up on my social networking

Not too concerned about pretty UI, I am an old-school fella, I like simple minus flashy animations and transitions.

Ha ha, mobo doesn't play MKVs as smooth as the player in Samsung roms. I don't keep mkv files on my phone so no issue for me, this one.

My 2700mah momax battery gives me about 20 hours of standby with my level of usage so it's fine. The stock 1500mah battery would probably make it to 10 hours or so for me.

Now waiting to see what's up Google's sleeves with the next Nexus phone and Android 4.0. Am also a bit interested in the upcoming Blackberry Bold Touch 9900 because I still miss the BB physical keyboard Will probably go back to being a BB phone user and an Android tablet user if the upcoming Nexus doesn't impress me enough ha ha.

I have 2 people in my office using the latest galnet-miui ptui or something (I applied for them), another running on stock but rooted JVQ and planning to change to the SGS2 soon, and then me, running ugly old CM7. I can see why I cannot sacrifice speed for prettiness - the 3 others phones are too slow or laggy for me to use

Lack of 3G video calling (don't use it), FM radio (nothing interesting on local radio anyway), sub-standard pic and video capture (getting better recently), bigger battery drain (aha, I have a bigger batt) are worthy sacrifices for the ultimate speed and great stability of CM7

Very big fan of CM7, that's me! CM7 is the only reason I am still holding an SGS and not thinking to change to a dual core Android phone.

galnetMIUI twooey is already rooted. Be careful, CM7 & MIUI cannot run with custom kernels meant for stock/photoshop ROMs.

I hope you didn't restore system data (bad idea). Also, did you reboot the phone after Titanium Backup restoration of apps/data?

Dunno buddy, ever since I have my Galaxy Tab I've been thinking to go back to a normal simple phone as my primary communications device, perhaps one with realtime notifications. Maybe a BB Bold 9900

Not sure about SNS, but I think the standard Facebook and Twitter client apps (and even Skype) from the Market allow for contacts sync on the phone.
