I was using CM7
superb rom except for the battery life =(
*
Kesian the CM7 devs and the ROM. Battery drain complaints here and there, kena buta only. From what I've read and understood, the so-called battery drain is likely due to active-standby interaction issues between CM7 and the modem drivers provided by Samsung. It seems that Samsung for some reason or other cannot or will not provide full sources for their complete firmwares (maybe licensing agreements with radio chip manufacturer?) so the CM7 devs have to make do with a lot of educated guesswork and analysis without access to sources.

In any case, my advice to those considering CM7 especially those who plan to have 3G-data enabled 24x7, please get a bigger capacity battery to save yourselves a lot of headache.

Mind advising if CM7 already has support for Radio, 720p video recording+playback?
*
Radio probably works, but I never use it. 720p recording seems smoother but not as smooth as in MIUI and Samsung-based roms. 720p playback not really nice for me.

I saw there many talking about lagfix. Actually what is this? I read some review about it. Somethings related with EXT4 and partition. What the benefits for it?
*
Does this help to explain it a bit? Old article I found..

http://www.tiagoespinha.net/2010/08/samsun...-how-to-fix-it/

QUOTE
Now, all was well until I started hearing about these supposed lag issues of the Galaxy S and I honestly didn't know what it was all about. The phone seemed fast enough for me and I was generally very happy with it. Sure, sometimes it would hang for 2 or 3 seconds but nothing to worrying. I genuinely thought it was just normal hiccups like we sometimes get on our computers.

Everything changed when I decided to give one of the lag fixes a go. I thought "hey, why not?", I had wanted to root my device for a while now so I could just as well go the extra mile and apply the lag fix as well, and boy, was I missing on speed. After rooting and applying the patch everything is just snappy. There's no more hiccups at all and apps just load instantly without any wait at all. For example, when I refresh my inbox using GMail it also takes WAY LESS time than it would before, which really surprised me. Browsing also feels faster and even the benchmarking tool "Quadrant Standard" reports the Galaxy S as being twice as fast as the Motorola Droid X! Actually, with this fix, the Galaxy S is at the top of the food chain with the closest phone to provide even similar results being the Nexus One on Froyo.

hey bro how is the stock kernel? heard that they have almost same battery life with samsung stock rom. i did notice some improvement on battery life but i am on glitch kernel, 4.5 hours with wifi on data off low usage left 89%.
*
Can't remember what it was like on stock or stock-based custom roms, bro tongue.gif I've been on CM7 since May ha ha. I do notice some significant improvements in battery life in the last 2 nightly releases, though.

6.5 hours on battery so far, 73% left on my fatty battery with 3G, BT, WIFI always enabled - 30 mins of screen-on time, 3 hours of wifi-running time, 33 mins of android-system-awake time..

You can try Dark Core kernel, but i think no matter what kernel you try they will all be similar speed.  Welcome to the SGS world where lag is part of it.
*
I beg to differ. no lag as far as i can notice on my sgs with latest cm7 nightly and stock cm7 kernel.

Yeah....but CM7 is not really for daily consumption for most people with the battery drain and bugs.  JMHO
*
well, you are correct there about cm7 not being the solution for most users, but it does show that your broad sweeping statement about lagginess being an attribute of the sgs is not really true..

BTW, I've been on cm7 nightlies since may and its just been getting better and better..

I am just being realistic about it.  If anyone can really confirm that there is no lag in the rom that they use without OC, then I wanna know and I believe most of the SGS owners here would wanna use it too.  In the end there is still some lag here and there and that doesn't render the phone useless.  Its just minor inconvenience.  But facts remain facts and I won't lie about it.

Added on July 7, 2011, 12:16 pm

Then why talk about a rom that is not applicable to the mass users?
*
My friend, the moment we talk about custom roms and custom kernels, we are deviating from the mainstream.

I can confirm that with CM7, I can't remember any instances where I got a lag. I tested this with nightly #34. The lag has gone long before this nightlies.
*
CM7 is so smooth that I'd still use it even if only 3G data, calls and sms worked on it ha ha. Can't even look at stock or stock-based custom roms/kernels now.. wub.gif

yes. in cm7 is like on "other os" with 1ghz cpu. (please no war icon_rolleyes.gif )
..
..
i think no one in this world can guarantee any device that will not lag(even Mr. J). for me "other os" will lag too(if you really want to compare icon_rolleyes.gif ). it is depend on how the user optimize their device.  smile.gif
*
That other 'OS' also lags in places, just that the UI does try to hide lagginess by showing flashy splash screens and pretty graphics transitions. I remember having about 200 apps on my other 'OS' tablet (first gen model) and experiencing massive lagginess everytime I tried to go into the settings screen, for one.

Dunno about Android because I don't have 200-300 apps yet on my phone or Tab. Maybe too many services (e.g. Skype) running at the same time will affect us?

Hi, May I know how do we check background services that are running?
How to terminate them? Will the phone reopen the apps/ services again?
What are the essential background services that MUST BE RUNNING all the time?
Thanks for the advice. smile.gif

I don't like to install and use system (cpu/memory/network) monitoring tools because the monitoring itself can sometimes affect the phone's performance. Therefore I just go to Settings / Applications / Running services to see what is going on under the hood.

In fact, I don't even kill running apps. I sometimes press the back button to come out of an app, or I press the home button, leaving the OS to manage itself by using AutoKiller to set minfree settings at boot (Moderate preset).

Note : In CM7, we can also enable 'long-press back button' to kill the actively running app. Good to have for emergency use since there is no actual Task Manager or Program Monitor like what Samsung-based ROMs have.

Currently on my phone, I see these apps/services listed as running:

Media - 4MB (1 process and 0 services)
Settings - 14MB (1 process and 0 services)
Voodoo Control Plus - 6.4MB (1 process and 1 service)
WhatsApp - 5.6MB (1 process and 1 service)
Maps - 5.7MB (1 process and 1 service)
Skype - 5.5MB (1 process and 1 service)
Bluetooth Share - 3.1MB (1 process and 2 services)
Google Services - 14MB (2 processes and 2 services)
Smart Keyboard Pro - 8.2MB (1 process and 1 service)

135MB RAM Used, 166MB RAM free

So far my phone has been fine, apps launch quickly, I can multitask with no delay and battery life seems OK for me especially after the recent CM7 nightly updates.

*
Ya, saw it earlier and looked at the changelog - 1 change affecting motorola and 1 for the fascinate. Not sure if I should wait a few more nightlies and make it worth my time to update.. biggrin.gif Daily releases by the buildbot is an automatic thing, I believe.

kmrdeva & gmhafiz,

can u share your experience using cm7, pro n cons from your personal perspective?
*
Pros - stable enough for daily use, fast as hell, zero lag as far as I can see, no samsung bloatware, regular non-wipe updates, clean UI, very near to plain Android, loads of options under settings so it's fun to explore
Cons - higher battery drain than Samsung-based roms (not sure since I don't use the stock batt), forget about hardware video decoding (e.g. mkv), 720p video recording not as smooth as stock rom, FM radio not working well

Oh yeah, something I recently discovered about CM7 - with 0 degree rotation enabled, you can even use the phone while holding it upside down (the display orientates itself on all 4 angles).
