I installed it on my ipad2 and ipod 4g ( mama look, i turned ipod to iphone4 lol brows.gif ) yesterday and tested many calls and below is my review.

1. Call qually was choppy and slightly delayed on streamyx 1mb line. I can hear the voice clearly from the person i called who was using normal mobile and fixed line but he can't really hear me clearly. Often times I need to repeat 2 to 3 times to make myself clear. Thus the 9 sen per min call rates needs to x 2 times too sometimes.
2. Exactly the same feature as Skype pay as you go plan but at cheaper domestic call rates.
3. Skype pay as you go no monthly commitment whereas Yes life needs minimum rm30 usage per month.
4. Yes life have free local phone number whereas Skype don't have. But one can hardly fully utilized the incoming call phone number due to the fact that we can't online 24/7.
5. Good for calling home from overseas with Internet access as compared to more expensive Skype pay as u go.
6. I'm not optimistic to use it as an incoming call option when traveling overseas because i can't control when and who will call me at certain time and i can't always be in the wifi range. Also for the fact that most of my customers will continue to call me at my primary phone number.

Well, the biggest drawback is the rm30 minimum monthly usage, otherwise it can be the good alternative to Skype pay as you go.

i already tried calling a normal mobile phone.my device was connected to a 2mbps streamyx wifi.no problem of lagging, voice was clear.the quality was even better than my digi line  sweat.gif

You heard clear voice from the call receiver's end because the other end is using a gsm line. The problem is at the call receiver's end where our Voices are choppy.

Good point. If not mistaken the receiver can hear some choppy voice if they are on a non-3G line / network. I guess there's bound to be some statiic depending on connection.
Skype needs both caller & receiver to have this app / program on their phone. YES only requires the caller to have this app install and he can make calls to any phone (irrespective of apps / model, etc).
*
As the matter of fact, I used skype to call back to Malaysia numbers and overseas local numbers when I was traveling. There is no need for the call receiver to instal anything on their phone. Just buy us10 skype credit and you are good to go.

For sure. What;s the rate like? For yes is 9 sen /min which means US 10 (RM 30) would equate to about 333 mins (6.5 hrs).
*
The call rates for skype r approx 6.5sen for fixed line and 21sen for mobile.
For mobile rate, YES win.
For fixed line rate, Skype win. There is a small one time connection fee though.
For monthly commitment, clearly Skype win big. Because the us10 credit is pay as you used whereas Yes must top up minimum us10 every month.

oh btw, I have both Skpye pay as you go credit and Yes Go dongle rm30/mth package for my mobile Internet needs.

QUOTE(raeshad @ May 14 2011, 04:40 AM)
i'm sure both of you guys know that it's a similar service that Skype's Online Number is offering albeit, Skype currently does not offer a Malaysian number. It would've been sweet if they do  tongue.gif

I've tried it myself and I find it pretty nifty. MYR 30 to compare with like EUR 10/25 is pretty cheap. Their service is good as of now. I might consider using it. Also, this is practically an essential app for overseas students or business persons/jet-setters.
*
Seriously, Dont be too excited over having virtual phone number, I have Yes 018 since Jan this year, it still rendered useless to me because those who know my 018 numbers hate calling my 018 because they get engage tone most of the time as compare to my primary maxis line.
One can never use virtual skype number and Yes 018 number as a primary mobile contact number because if you insist, you risk losing your gf who can't contact you during emergency.
I not saying Yes life 018 is totally useless, I just want to point out that it is not worth paying rm30 a month to maintain Yes life 018 if the main intention is to use it as incoming number.

QUOTE(eMKs @ May 14 2011, 07:11 AM)
if you have ip4, try use in your connection. See whether it's improve or not because ip4 has noise cancellation mic. i think your ipod & ipad don't have.
*
Well, I think the choppy voice is most like due to signal lost rather than noise cancellation mic.

QUOTE(hurricane21 @ May 14 2011, 09:26 AM)
i am still thinking change my current call plan to internet unlimited plan, then make call using yes life, its quite cheap and clear, but i scare all the time on 3g data will drain battery fast
*
Few technical challenges you have to fulfill before you jump to the bandwagon
1 can you get 3G Internet coverage everywhere you go ?
2. How many days Can your phone battery standby 3G data connection ?
3. Can you bear with choppy 018 VoIP over 3G call quality ?
4. Can you roam internationally ?
5. Many more technical problems but I lazy to write Liao.

Here's an idea- I travel overseas quite a bit. If this works, it will work well for me.

I will divert my primary mobile number to the Yes Life, so incoming calls are free. I can call out with this so it's a local call.

I just need to register or buy a prepaid 3G data sim card when I am overseas.
*
QUOTE(eMKs @ May 14 2011, 04:14 PM)
Your primary line will be charged for diverting calls.
*
Unfortunately, YES Life 018 does not allow call forwarding in or out. The only DID number in Malaysia that can perform international call forwarding is Redtone SIPhony015. The SIPhony015 is given free without any monthly commitment.
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=36684520
SIPhony015 is piggyback on GSM network thus your phone is on normal gsm standby not 3G data standby and you dont have to buy a more expensive data plan sim card, just need to buy a cheaper local GSM sim at the arrival airport.

Hi guys, I have a friend who works for Yes and he showed me some tips to use the app.

One of the biggest issue i think most of us face is "if I give my number to a friend, what happens if the friend tries to call me when I'm offline?!".

The answer is to activate Call Forwarding which is by default activated for free for all customers. Forward calls when you are unavailable, busy or offline to your current operator. That way, people will always be able to reach you on your 018 number. Of course, you will be charged (9sen/min local) for the diverted call.

Although the official FAQ in Yes states that the feature is coming soon, it is actually ready (only thing is that the GUI on the app is not). Note that the customer care won't be able to help you since it's still not official though.

Anyway, to activate Call Forwarding, call *25 NUM# (e.g. *250162211800#) and to deactivate it simply call #25#. This is similar to the codes you find in GSM operators. Try it and see if it works for you!

Now you may ask, how then can I receive SMS while I'm offline? I can only suggest you install Yes Life for Windows/Mac and login at least once a day to retrieve all your messages. Or ask your friends to SMS you on your GSM number, since receiving SMS is free anyway.

Hope this helps! smile.gif

Good sharing, Thank you. I tried to forward to my maxis. The setting works but not the calls. IVR prompted me " the number that you call is currently not available bla bla bla......."

Hi, if I go oversea, I deactivate all 3G, Data, and Data Roaming and use Yes, it is save for me to say I won't be charged any Roaming cost ?

Thank you.
*
No roaming cost but you need to be in free wifi hotspot.
You can make outgoing voice calls upon finding a free wifi hotspot but you can't control when is incoming calls coming in. Receiving calls in overseas via YES 018 will not be feasible unless you want to remain static within a wifi range. Other common sense issues such as friends and family will still calling your GSM main line due to difficulty in establishing connection to your YES 018.

soooooo..... what is the exact point of YTL doing this when the app still needs an internet connection to do this? meaning iphone's 3G connection has to be on, non-3G ipad and ipod users need to stick to a wifi connection to use...
*
There are 2 different angles to look at it.
1) If you are not an existing subscriber of YES Wimax and you don't need mobile internet then don't bother to pay RM30 per month for the 018 number. It's just not worth it.
2) If you are an existing subscriber of YES Wimax and an iphone/ipad/ipod user then this is a good value added features for alternative voice account. You don't need to buy Skype pay as you go credit any more for calling home from overseas using wifi network.

For occasional calling home from overseas when travelling, Skype is the better choice because the Skype credit can last forever as long as you use it once every 180 days and also Skype is multi platforms. Another plus point for Skype is Skype to Skype is FREE and many friends and family on their Skype account during office hours whereas YES to YES is chargeable and non out of my list of contacts using it yet.

Just test out YES life for IOS on
1.) WIFI- Able to received & make outgoing calls. Voice quality is pretty good.
2.) 3G- Tested both receiving and making calls with no problem.
I am able receive call when the app is running in background.
Pro- It is good for people to call me when i am oversea. And the caller just paid their local telco charges..
Cons- The plan is bad, as they allow carry forward of your un use credit with a catch.
*
Do you reckon you would pay RM30 every month to maintain the YES Life 018 number for occasional overseas usage and domestic out going call/sms usage ?

I think it is good when u plan to travel oversea, so that people in Malaysia can call you on your 018 number and pay for local telco call charges rate only..And only 1 party ( YES 018) need to be online. That is all..
*
Yes I do agree it is good for incoming call when traveling oversea.....but only in theory.

In real life situation, when one arrived at overseas, he has to fulfill the following requirements in order to make full use of YES Life 018 incoming call feature.
1) He has to make sure that all his contacts call his new YES life 018 number instead of his old primary GSM number. ( this is impossible !)
2) He has to be static within a Wifi rage in order not to miss a call. (this also impossible)
3) He has to pay prohibitory high price for unlimited data roaming plan and need to carry/buy another wifi tethering devices for internet sharing with Ipod and Ipad wifi. ( this is doable but at a higher cost which defeat the purpose of his initial intention of FREE incoming voice calls overseas).
4) He has to make sure that the city he visited has strong 3G coverage, no blind spot if he pays dearly for a data plan.
5) What if he willing to pay and can fulfilled conditions No.3 and 4 but his friends and family still call his primary GSM number ? Back to square one again. ....
6) Psychologically, friends and family members will not be happy to call an always inactive, sometimes on, sometimes off secondary phone number.
7) As for out going call over wifi network, it is a good feature but "Skype Pay As You Go"can do that too without monthly RM30 commitment.

No doubt, it is for the convenience of the caller (perhaps your wife) to call you when your YES 018 are WIFI connected during oversea trip..As, the caller just dial from her mobile phone anytime ANYWHERE.. Of course you have to send her an SMS saying "call me now".. Otherwise, how she know you are connected to WIFI..This scenario is very realistic.. Same thing if you are using skype oversea, and u found out that she is not on Skype. You will also probably SMS her to go online rite? If this is the case, then YES 018 wins out..
*
I'm talking on a broader perspective. YES Life 018 out going call is no doubt a good feature on iDevices but not the incoming call feature. Since YES lIfe 018 can never be one's primary phone number due to wifi limitation therefore it will hardly receive any incoming call from the contacts list. The contacts will continue to call the primary number in order to get flawless instant connection. And when one don't expect any incoming call coming to his YES Life 018, why would he want to pay expensive data roaming package to enable incoming call standby for YES Life 018 (when over sea)?

When one is overseas and is within a AP range, why waste RM1 or RM2 roaming sms each to get some one to call back just because he is ready to receive calls ? Worse still if the 1st sms sent but half and hour later still no call back and he is waiting in vain at the Shanghai Starbulk Cafe. Why not just use the YES 018 or Skype to call back straight away ?

By the way, I noted terryfu repeatedly commented in the previous post that Skype calls must needs both caller and receiver to have Skype installed on their respective devices in order to make call over IP. This is not true because similar to YES Life, Skype can also call any Malaysian land lines and mobile lines. Just buy US10 (RM30) "Pay As You Go" credit and you can call any Malaysia fixed line at 7sen and mobile lines at 21sen per minute. Though the Malaysia call rates are somewhat more expensive than YES 018 rates but the never expired Skype credit just too good for the YES 018 that needs monthly RM30 to keep up with.

If one is currently using YES Wimax internet plan which comes with free YES Life 018, then different lah....

I've myself tested the Yes Life on my iPhone 4 only on Full Signal 3G.

The call get disconnected and the quality is so - so even on 3G Full Signal.

I've also tested on WIFI, on WIFI the Quality is very good. And no delay on either party.

IMO, this is very useful when you're travelling and the Hotel there have a good WIFI service.

And, if you're travelling I think our family and friend will be notified through Facebook and therefore they will not try to contact us by phone.

So, no problem on missing a call.

I'll be going to India next week. I'll update as I try to call my GF from there using this YES Life App and Line...

Cheers..

Actually the most convenient and cost effective way for overseas telecommunication needs is to buy a local prepaid sim card. No need to rely on internet to make or receive calls.

QUOTE(maximus85 @ May 26 2011, 08:47 AM)
Hi guys, bit of confuse here.. Why do one needs to pay the monthly RM30? i thought Yes Life uses data for calling? Means i can call anywhere anytime for free, provided say, i'm on wireless data connection.. No? Plz enlighten me. notworthy.gif
*
In order to maintain your YES Life 018 number, you need to have minimum usage of RM30 every month. If not, your 018 service will be terminated. Please check Yes.my for more info. There is no free call in YES Life, you need to pay for it.

Sometimes, it's worth to get oversea prepaid sim even though you'll stay there for a short period. All you need is do a research before you go there, compare all telco's offers & calculate how much you'll use it.
Not all places have a free wifi especially when your trip require a lot of travelling.
*
Not sometimes, is all the times. I would buy even only 3 days trip. The cost of receiving 1 or 2 minutes roaming call already exceed the cost of 1 overseas prepaid sim card.

Just downloaded and tested it. It works quite well but no intention to subscribe. Anyway, after the expiry, can I download / re-install and re-register again to get the free RM 5 credit when I am going overseas?
*
QUOTE(terryfu @ Jun 2 2011, 09:06 AM)
You can try that but your record and number will still be there. I pre-registered when YES first launched and I check that account is still active and being billed RM 30 every month even though I did not activate it. Now I also have this new YES telephone number which will probably run as well if I stop using the free connection.

If you want a permanent local Malaysian sip phone number account similar to YES Life but without the monthly commitment, get REDtone SIPhony 015.

Step 1
Download and install Linphone
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/linphone/id360065638?mt=8
user posted image

Step 2
Buy the REDtone SIPhony 015 here:
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1581565&hl=

The differences between YES Life and SIPhony015 are:
YES Life is zero upfront but need monthly RM30 minimum usage commitment.
REDtone SIPhony015 pay RM120 upfront (FREE RM40 preloaded airtime) but pay as you use for 1 year from your last topup (minimum topup is RM10). No monthly commitment.
YES 018 call YES 018 need to pay 9sen/min whereas SIPhony 015 call SIPhony 015 is FREE !
One powerful feature of SIPhony015 is that it can divert all voice calls bound to your main Malaysian phone line to your overseas prepaid number (if you buy one) thus avoiding the call receiving roaming charges.

terry,

Which UK telco you bought the 3G sim card from ? It can be used in France with unlimited 3G data without kena the data roaming charge ? I know in UK there is a free prepaid sim call Lebara, just need to top up 5 pound and calls to Malaysia at 5p/min and free data 10mb/day.
I'm going to EU too.

Good point.

Looks like not much users for Yes Life unless they subscribe the full 4G network. YTL needs to look into the commitment thing but my guess is they need a revenue stream. Either that or extend the RM 30 to a year would be better as not all of us travel overseas every month smile.gif
*
There is no mass revenue from these category of customers, their numbers are limited and they can't just give away their limited phone numbers to anyone without a promise of revenue or fixed ARPU.
