Copa America: Calcio's Cup

While much of the build-up to this summer's Copa America has revolved around the absence of stars such as Kaka and Luis Jimenez, there are still plenty of familiar faces for calcio fans to look out for

Argentina: Hernan Crespo (Inter)

There are several Italian based players to pick from in Coach Alfilo Basile's squad, all from Inter. However, there is no doubt that Hernan Crespo poses the most potent threat. He has netted a remarkable 32 goals in 62 appearances for his national side over the years, and his Serie A record is no less admirable. This year he helped Inter to their first Scudetto success since 1989 with 14 goals scored, including a hat trick in a memorable 4-3 comeback victory against Lazio, and a goal against his former employers Milan. Although his position is under threat from young talents like Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi, as he showed at last summer's World Cup, Hernan is still the main man.

Also in the squad: Nicolas Burdisso, Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti (Inter)

Brazil: Douglas Maicon (Inter)

The Serie A representative to watch in holders Brazil's squad is Douglas Maicon after his revelatory campaign at Inter. Maicon, who has 21 international caps, may face a battle for his usual spot at right back with the highly-rated Daniel Alves of Sevilla, but anyone who saw Inter's first choice right back in action this year knows he would not disappoint if selected. The ex-Monaco man was one of the driving forces in Inter's Scudetto success, consistently getting forward down the right flank and aiding the attack, even scoring twice in Serie A and once in the Champions League.

Also in the squad: Alexander Doni and Juan (Roma)

Colombia: Ivan Cordoba (Inter)
Along with Javier Zanetti, Ivan Cordoba is one of the few to survive Inter's recent chop and change mentality and has become indispensable to the Beneamata. Despite his small stature, Cordoba's renowned pace has helped him cement his place at the heart of an all-conquering defence. Able to play at centre back and right back, he is also a danger going forward at set pieces. The Copa holds particularly sweet memories for Cordoba, who scored the winning goal when his country lifted the trophy on home turf in 2001.

Paraguay: Dante Lopez (Crotone)
Not exactly a household name in Italy, Dante Lopez will represent the Guaraníes despite a tough season at Serie C-bound Crotone. The 23-year-old marksman has only found the net seven times in 50 appearances in Italy, but raises his game on the international stage with three goals from 11 caps.

Uruguay: Alvaro Recoba (Inter)
Love him or hate him, Alvaro Recoba is undoubtedly Uruguay's main man. The perennial underachiever for the Nerazzurri, El Chino has been known to shine on national duty. Having finally hopped off the treatment table he featured more prominently in the closing stages of the season and after scoring the winner in a friendly against Australia, he will be full of confidence.

Also in the squad: Fabian Carini (Inter) and Carlos Valdez (Treviso)

QUOTE
Napoli has bought a great player, Lavezzi.
He has already impressed me so much that he might become one to look after in the future, he scored one goal and gave 2 great assists.

Juventus has also played well but didnt deserve to win the game as far as am concerned, Cagliari played with great authority and seemed comfortable for the much part of the game but credit for Juve they have outstanding GK Buffon...he made a miracle to today it was almost impossible to miss but buffon managed in someway to save it.

Roma, as usual they played a great game and has Aquilani in a straordinary form..Giuly seems to gel quickly and totti scored a beautiful goal.

It will be an interesting season to look after.
That game was ruined by the ref, such a nonsene.

result of the day: Udinese 0 Napoli 5

SILVANO RAMACCIONI ON NESTA

9/10/2007

MILANELLO - Silvano Ramaccioni spoke about Nesta's farewell from the national team: "I saw him decided. I think that his was a thought and pondered choice. I didn't think it was the case to interfere. Despite the injury during the World Cup, he still left as a World Champion; it was a nice way how to give his farewell." cry.gif

Pirlo added to injury list
cry.gif
Football Italia

After Luca Toni and Gennaro Gattuso, there are fears Andrea Pirlo will also be ruled out of Wednesday's must-win match with Ukraine.

The Milan midfield maestro suffered a knock to his calf muscle during the 0-0 draw with France and was spotted hobbling around the training ground this morning.

More tests will be made later today and it is possible Pirlo will be sent home or at least advised to sit on the bench in Kiev next Wednesday.

It is a bitter blow for Coach Roberto Donadoni, who already has to plan this encounter without Marco Materazzi, Toni and the suspended Gattuso.

Bayern Munich hitman Toni had hoped to be fit for the Euro 2008 qualifier, but tests showed his muscular problem was still not eradicated, so he was sent home last night.

Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta has been drafted in as a late replacement.

Toni ready for action Friday 14 September, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Azzurri hitman Luca Toni could return to action for Bayern Munich this weekend after making a full recovery from a thigh injury.

The former Fiorentina hero enjoyed a superb start to life in the Bundesliga with three goals in as many games for Die Roten after a £7m move from the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the summer.

However, the Modena-born giant had to limp off in a game against Hannover 96 after injuring himself while scoring and he missed out on Italy's crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers against France and Ukraine.

After the frustration of watching Juventus' Vincenzo Iaquinta take his place in the squad for the trip to Kiev, Toni may be ready for a seat on the bench in the crunch match against Schalke on Saturday.

"Today he was training at around 70 per cent," revealed Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld. "We're going to use him carefully though.

"There was no mystery about his injury. Our staff did all that they could, but he could never have recovered in time for the Italy game."

Toni will now try to keep up his impressive early form with the Bavarians and will look to earn an Azzurri shirt for October's clash against Georgia.

Del Piero backing Azzurri
Saturday 13 October, 2007
The dropped Alessandro Del Piero has insisted he will still be cheering on Italy in this evening's crunch Euro 2008 qualifier against Georgia.

Del Piero was controversially left out of the squad by Roberto Donadoni, but the Juventus ace is hoping that his teammates will collect the three points in order to keep his own Euro 2008 dream alive.

"I'll be in front of the television, cheering on the boys against Georgia," he underlined. "We all want to qualify and I want to be there in the Finals fighting for the European crown.

"I'll be back for my country."

However, it's not been an easy start to the campaign for the Juventus legend who has had to deal with alternating form and a dispute with club officials regarding his contract extension.

"I'm really calm about everything, I'm training hard and just concentrating on my next League game against Genoa," he continued.

"The affection that people have been showing me recently is something which I am honoured by and I would really like to thank everyone for their support."

Iaquinta out for Georgia
Friday 12 October, 2007
Azzurri boss Roberto Donadoni will be without Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Georgia.

The former Udinese star, who has enjoyed a great start to the season, was forced to miss today's training due to a severe irritation to his throat that prevented him from leaving the Azzurri's hotel.

Iaquinta has no fever, which means the 29-year-old forward still has a slight chance to make the game, but is also suffering from knee problems, which worried him at the start of the week.

Donadoni is likely to select an attacking 4-3-3 formation. The former Livorno tactician was planning to play Iaquinta in the trident alongside Antonio Di Natale and Luca Toni.

But at this stage, with the Juve man not 100 per cent fit, Fabio Quagliarella is likely to step in. Shakhtar Donetsk hitman Cristiano Lucarelli is also hoping for a place in the starting XI.

Meanwhile, Giorgio Chiellini has fully recovered for the clash. The Bianconero should cover the left-back spot, but Fabio Grosso is also an option.

The Azzurri have also picked their jersey numbers. De Rossi will keep the No 10 shirt previously held by his Roma teammate and captain Francesco Totti, while Riccardo Montolivo has opted for the No 18.

Euro 2008 qualifier - October 13, 2007

Italy 2-0 Georgia
Pirlo 44, Grosso 84
Stadio Ferraris, Genova (23,057)

Italy have moved back into a qualifying spot for the European Championships after a 2-0 victory over Georgia. Goals from Andrea Pirlo and Fabio Grosso ensured the much-needed three points, even if the Azzurri didn't totally convince throughout the 90 minutes.

Italy went into the Genoa clash knowing that only victory would do after Scotland beat the Ukraine 3-1 and France hammered the Faroes 6-0 earlier in the day. With that in mind, Donadoni went bravely on the attack despite the loss of Vincenzo Iaquinta to the flu and the absence of the suspended Fabio Cannavaro and the injured Marco Materazzi at the back.

Italy move back into second place in Group B and will now be hoping that Georgia will do them a favour against Scotland on Wednesday. If not then Italy will have no choice but to go to Glasgow on November 17 and come home with nothing less than three points...

Italy: Buffon; Oddo, Barzagli, Panucci, Grosso; Gattuso, Pirlo, Ambrosini (Mauri 87); Quagliarella (Foggia 71), Toni, Di Natale

Georgia: Lomaia; Khizanshvili, Salukvadze, Asatiani, Shashasvili (Kenia 61); Tskitishvili, Menteshashvili, Kvirkvelia, Kankava; Demetradze, Mchedlidze (Siradze 61)
