AS Roma 6-2 Internazionale On a warm and sunny Roman afternoon the Olímpico was packed to the brim with Roman fans in fine voice, the Nerazzurri visitors also lending their vocal chords to the build-up. After all it was the fifth time that both had consecutively clashed as Coppa finalists and Inter - recently crowned Serie A kings - landed in the capital as clear favourites. Then again, life really isn't that simple and things can change at the drop of a hat...
Or in this case - at the drop of a whistle as ref Saccani had hardly had time to check his watch before the first goal went in. The Giallorossi hosts went ahead as Panucci - one of the names of the game - slotted a ball forward for Rodrigo Taddei and the Brazilian winger set Francesco Totti (1 min) up. The number 10 coolly shook off a defender to tap the ball in.
The visitors were left reeling with their recently acquired crown askew, unable to cope with the sudden flood of Magica attacks or put together a dangerous chance of their own. It was soon 2-0 when, ironically, ex-Inter midfielder Pizarro snapped a corner for Mexes (5 min) to wallop on the volley, Daniele De Rossi adding the winning touch as a deflection threw Toldo off.
His defense were to blame as the Nerazzurri rearguard crumbled like old crostini to let Roma start by wolfing down their hated nemesis from previous editions. Toldo was actually doing his best, defusing a Rodrigo Taddei bomb and staunching the haemorrhage as best as he could as Roma looked to be enjoying the taste of freshly-drawn blood and hungry for more.
The Roman lupi (wolves) soon howled again as Chivu broke forward via a suddenly open left flank, smacking a daisy-cutter across Toldo's goal, the ball zipping past to find Perrotta (16 min) sliding in with a providential left foot to net the third goal of the evening.
Inter seemed to be about to conjure up a past ghost as they narrowed the distance and prompted some local fans into fears that a repeat of the Super Coppa - Roma leading 3-0 only to lose 3-4 - may be on the cards.
Pizarro gave a hand - or a foot - to his ex-club as a daft pass was pounced upon by Crespo (20 min), the ex-Lazio man showing he hadn't forgotten his Biancocelesti days by punishing the team that once were his arch-rivals on the field.
Figo finally got the Nerazzurri fans hopes back up as he sent a close thing shooting in but it was merely a cruel mirage as Roma re-established the three-goal air bag. Toldo was found wanting as the veteran tipped a cross from Perrotta but left Mancini (30 min) free to net the spillage.
A rather bland and unmotivated Adriano had a chance which he sent rolling into Doni's arms as if he was playing crazy golf with a couple of groupies. The difference between miffed youth and solid experience was clear as Figo shouldered the burden and left Doni's woodwork rattling as his shot exploded off the Giallorossi post, a second effort foiled by an alert Mexes.
The French centre-back had to leave soon after, a calf strain seeing Marco Cassetti coming on with Chivu moving into the middle. Adriano made up for his previous limp-ankled effort with a 30-metre wire-guided missile that Doni managed to tip wide.
Figo bowed out of the first leg with honours, although not a goal that would have made such a difference. Vieira made his second showing in three months, but Roma were still ruling the roost with the French holding midfielder on the park and soon struck again.
Roma converted yet another corner as Pizarro swung the ball in for Panucci (54 min) to beat the opposition and nod in Rome's fifth unopposed. It seemed that every ounce of firepower that was absent at Old Trafford had been injected into the Giallorossi.
Nevertheless, Crespo is the closest thing that Inter have to a dog trainer when it comes to bringing the wolves to heel. The Chelsea-loaned, Apache-coiffed striker was able to whoop over his fourth Giallorossi scalp this season as a Cassetti fluff let Maicon through to cross and Crespo (55 min) obliged with a nod that made it 5-2.
Recoba came on from an Adriano who's finding fewer and fewer fans willing to stick by him, but it was a one-note samba played by Roma as Mancini and Totti almost make it a swift half dozen, Toldo at full stretch to deny another nail in Inter's Coppa coffin.
Mancini tried to re-orchestrate as Grosso came on for a decaffeinated Maxwell but lady luck was blowing raspberries and it was Roma who caused oohhhhhhs as they shaved paint off the post. Aquilani came on for a limping Taddei, the Brazilian asking to come off after feeling what looks like an old injury flare up again.
Aquilani left his calling card for a future Nike advert with a flashy overhead pass that Totti snapped over the bar. Another maestro was at work at the other end - albeit in pipette drops - as Recoba forced Doni to justify both salary and permanence after the Old Trafford debacle.
Dacourt managed to appear, but unfortunately it was just to feature in the ref's book, the second leg now off limits for the Frenchman although few Inter fans will be wiping away many tears. His compatriot Vieira also saw yellow for a Shaolin Soccer studs-out lunge at De Rossi.
In the waning minutes Roma sliced a last chunk off their shish-kebabed guests, Zanetti adding to the litany of poor Inter challenges by bringing a howling Mancini down with a scything tackle.
Totti blasted the resulting 35-yard kick in for Toldo to block, but Panucci (89 min) leapt on the scraps and bagged a well-deserved brace that makes the Final the highest-scoring Coppa Final yet.
Materazzi, sub-par and evidently annoyed at both himself and his similarly off-key colleagues, made a faux pas as his frayed nerves led to a juvenile challenge on Totti. The resulting yellow will keep the centre-back out of the Final - just when he's needed the most.
The return leg at San Siro next week on the 17th of May will be a match that promises a lot - and hopefully that means that Roma maintain their level and Inter raise theirs to previous standards. If that happens we are in for one hell of a decider.
