Italy cannot be host for euro 2012
this is the news about the bid,

Italy had already hosted the European Football Championship finals in 1968 and 1980, and also hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1934 and 1990.

The Italian bid appeared to be the most solid of the three due to Italy's generally excellent transportation infrastructure, the wide availability of lodging for visiting fans, and the Italian football association's past experience in organizing final rounds. None of the other short-list candidates had ever hosted the finals of a major football tournament independently or as part of a joint bid, with the partial exception of Croatia. Also, the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin demonstrated the Italian ability to host a sporting event comparable to the Euro in magnitude. Italy's current status of World Cup holder was also thought to be a positive factor.

However, the recent scandal in Italy's first division and the football-related violence in Catania, which led to the death of police officer Filippo Raciti and revealed safety deficiencies in many stadia, have damaged the overall standing of Italian football. Yet the Italian government's resolve to assist football authorities in solving the problem - e.g., by introducing anti-hooliganism laws and allocating funds to immediate safety improvement measures in stadia - gave hope that it might partially mitigate the risk to Italy's Euro bid. Another minor risk was potential apathy of domestic fans after repeatedly re-using the same host nation, though 22 years would have elapsed since the last major tournament at home if Italy was selected to host Euro 2012.

The hosts were chosen on April 18, 2007 in Cardiff, Wales. The results of the voting are:

Poland/Ukraine (8 votes, winner)
Italy (4 votes, eliminated)
Croatia/Hungary (0 votes, eliminated)

Buffon Praises Peruzzi Gianluigi Buffon has heaped praise on fellow goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi after he announced his retirement.

Buffon Praises Peruzzi

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has hailed Lazio keeper Angelo Peruzzi after hearing he is soon to retire.

"I have known Angelo for a long time and we have shared many things together," Buffon told Sky Italia. "This is a sad day for the fans and I because he represented Italian football. He is a fantastic person and a great goalkeeper.

"Together we have been through the last World Cup and the European Championship in Portugal. Every now and then I thought that having a keeper like him on the bench was a waste.

"He is a true great on and off the pitch, and even if I was the regular in the Nazionale I felt sorry for him. It's so unfair that someone like him never had the chance to play a full World Cup," said Buffon.

"The truth after all is this: he never played a World Cup as first choice and I believe Angelo fully deserved it," concluded the World Cup winner.

Peruzzi revealed his decision to leave the football scene after last Sunday's Roman derby against Roma. Many others have expressed their surprise and disappointment over the former Juventus player's decision.

Totti Who? - Donadoni The national team coach was ironic about the call up of "Il Pupone" for the games against Lithuania and the Faroe Islands.

Totti Who? - Donadoni

It's not easy being coach of the Azzurri. Going up and down Italy to follow the various Italian players, take often unpopular decisions, and try to get the best out of a group of players already having the life squeezed out of them by their clubs. There is a lot of stress involved, and it can have negative repercussions.

On the usual question regarding a possible call up for Totti ahead of the June games against Lithuania and the Faroe Islands, Donadoni ironically said: "Totti? Who is he? Never heard of him...".

The intention is obviously to avoid starting another polemic surrounding the Roma captain, although it certainly shows the player's popularity with the coach has not improved.

While at a golf tournament with the proceeds going to charity, Donadoni went on to comment on the upcoming qualifying games: "June will be an important month, I hope to find players who are ready and motivated, even though it won't be easy after a championship as long as ours."

He also gave his opinion regarding the duel at a distance between Inter and Milan, with the fans arguing on who had the better season, considering Inter won the Scudetto and Milan reached the Champions League final. Is it better to win the league or to triumph in Europe? "They are different competitions, but equally important", Donadoni answered.

AS Roma 6-2 Internazionale

On a warm and sunny Roman afternoon the Olímpico was packed to the brim with Roman fans in fine voice, the Nerazzurri visitors also lending their vocal chords to the build-up. After all it was the fifth time that both had consecutively clashed as Coppa finalists and Inter - recently crowned Serie A kings - landed in the capital as clear favourites. Then again, life really isn't that simple and things can change at the drop of a hat...

Or in this case - at the drop of a whistle as ref Saccani had hardly had time to check his watch before the first goal went in. The Giallorossi hosts went ahead as Panucci - one of the names of the game - slotted a ball forward for Rodrigo Taddei and the Brazilian winger set Francesco Totti (1 min) up. The number 10 coolly shook off a defender to tap the ball in.

The visitors were left reeling with their recently acquired crown askew, unable to cope with the sudden flood of Magica attacks or put together a dangerous chance of their own. It was soon 2-0 when, ironically, ex-Inter midfielder Pizarro snapped a corner for Mexes (5 min) to wallop on the volley, Daniele De Rossi adding the winning touch as a deflection threw Toldo off.

His defense were to blame as the Nerazzurri rearguard crumbled like old crostini to let Roma start by wolfing down their hated nemesis from previous editions. Toldo was actually doing his best, defusing a Rodrigo Taddei bomb and staunching the haemorrhage as best as he could as Roma looked to be enjoying the taste of freshly-drawn blood and hungry for more.

The Roman lupi (wolves) soon howled again as Chivu broke forward via a suddenly open left flank, smacking a daisy-cutter across Toldo's goal, the ball zipping past to find Perrotta (16 min) sliding in with a providential left foot to net the third goal of the evening.

Inter seemed to be about to conjure up a past ghost as they narrowed the distance and prompted some local fans into fears that a repeat of the Super Coppa - Roma leading 3-0 only to lose 3-4 - may be on the cards.

Pizarro gave a hand - or a foot - to his ex-club as a daft pass was pounced upon by Crespo (20 min), the ex-Lazio man showing he hadn't forgotten his Biancocelesti days by punishing the team that once were his arch-rivals on the field.

Figo finally got the Nerazzurri fans hopes back up as he sent a close thing shooting in but it was merely a cruel mirage as Roma re-established the three-goal air bag. Toldo was found wanting as the veteran tipped a cross from Perrotta but left Mancini (30 min) free to net the spillage.

A rather bland and unmotivated Adriano had a chance which he sent rolling into Doni's arms as if he was playing crazy golf with a couple of groupies. The difference between miffed youth and solid experience was clear as Figo shouldered the burden and left Doni's woodwork rattling as his shot exploded off the Giallorossi post, a second effort foiled by an alert Mexes.

The French centre-back had to leave soon after, a calf strain seeing Marco Cassetti coming on with Chivu moving into the middle. Adriano made up for his previous limp-ankled effort with a 30-metre wire-guided missile that Doni managed to tip wide.

Figo bowed out of the first leg with honours, although not a goal that would have made such a difference. Vieira made his second showing in three months, but Roma were still ruling the roost with the French holding midfielder on the park and soon struck again.

Roma converted yet another corner as Pizarro swung the ball in for Panucci (54 min) to beat the opposition and nod in Rome's fifth unopposed. It seemed that every ounce of firepower that was absent at Old Trafford had been injected into the Giallorossi.

Nevertheless, Crespo is the closest thing that Inter have to a dog trainer when it comes to bringing the wolves to heel. The Chelsea-loaned, Apache-coiffed striker was able to whoop over his fourth Giallorossi scalp this season as a Cassetti fluff let Maicon through to cross and Crespo (55 min) obliged with a nod that made it 5-2.

Recoba came on from an Adriano who's finding fewer and fewer fans willing to stick by him, but it was a one-note samba played by Roma as Mancini and Totti almost make it a swift half dozen, Toldo at full stretch to deny another nail in Inter's Coppa coffin.

Mancini tried to re-orchestrate as Grosso came on for a decaffeinated Maxwell but lady luck was blowing raspberries and it was Roma who caused oohhhhhhs as they shaved paint off the post. Aquilani came on for a limping Taddei, the Brazilian asking to come off after feeling what looks like an old injury flare up again.

Aquilani left his calling card for a future Nike advert with a flashy overhead pass that Totti snapped over the bar. Another maestro was at work at the other end - albeit in pipette drops - as Recoba forced Doni to justify both salary and permanence after the Old Trafford debacle.

Dacourt managed to appear, but unfortunately it was just to feature in the ref's book, the second leg now off limits for the Frenchman although few Inter fans will be wiping away many tears. His compatriot Vieira also saw yellow for a Shaolin Soccer studs-out lunge at De Rossi.

In the waning minutes Roma sliced a last chunk off their shish-kebabed guests, Zanetti adding to the litany of poor Inter challenges by bringing a howling Mancini down with a scything tackle.

Totti blasted the resulting 35-yard kick in for Toldo to block, but Panucci (89 min) leapt on the scraps and bagged a well-deserved brace that makes the Final the highest-scoring Coppa Final yet.

Materazzi, sub-par and evidently annoyed at both himself and his similarly off-key colleagues, made a faux pas as his frayed nerves led to a juvenile challenge on Totti. The resulting yellow will keep the centre-back out of the Final - just when he's needed the most.

The return leg at San Siro next week on the 17th of May will be a match that promises a lot - and hopefully that means that Roma maintain their level and Inter raise theirs to previous standards. If that happens we are in for one hell of a decider.

AS ROMA (6): Doni, Panucci, Ferrari, Mexes (Cassetti), Chivu, De Rossi, Pizarro, Taddei (Aquilani), Perrotta, Mancini, Totti

INTERNAZIONALE (2): Toldo, Maicon, Cordoba, Materazzi, Maxwell, Stankovic, Dacourt, Zanetti, Figo, Adriano (Recoba), Crespo

Totti Has Three Objectives Left Winning the Coppa Italia is not the only objective left for Roma captain Francesco Totti this season.

Totti Has Three Objectives Left

user posted image

Roma captain Francesco Totti has declared that winning the Coppa Italia is an important objective for this final part of the season.

The Giallorossi thrashed Inter 6-2 in the first leg of the final at the Stadio Olimpico, leaving the Nerazzurri with a massive task if they are to overturn the deficit and lift the Cup in the second leg at San Siro.

"I don't feel that we have already won the Cup, but if we play in Milan with the same attitude we had yesterday we have a great chance of lifting the trophy," Totti said. "We played a perfect match yesterday, making no mistakes at all."

"The Coppa Italia is one of the three objectives I have for the end of the season. The first one is the Capocannoniere title, then the Golden Boot. I need to score at least four goals in three matches."

Totti also believes that the squad needs a few new signings to be more competitive in next season's Champions League.

"This team can be strengthened with two or three top-level players. We need some experienced men, especially for our European ties.

"In this year's Champions League Final I will cheer for Milan, because they are an Italian outfit and I have many friends who play there. I hope they will avenge Istanbul's defeat," Totti concluded.

Gattuso Proud For Italy Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was especially proud for Italian football after the Champions League triumph against Liverpool.

Gattuso Proud For Italy

Milan have managed to beat Liverpool in the Champions League, just two years after losing against the Reds.

The game in Athens was not just a revenge, but also a demonstration that Italian football is still one of the best in Europe, as Gennaro Gattuso reiterated.

"In one year I have won the World Cup with Italy and the Champions League with Milan", the midfielder said just after the game.

"For me it's a reason of great pride, in the face of those who said that Italian football was in crisis.

"What's more important between the Champions League and the World Cup? Let's not talk about that.

"You can't choose, they are different types of emotion, and winning the World Cup is really incredible."

Ancelotti's Azzurri dream

Carlo Ancelotti admits that he dreams of one day coaching the Italy squad, but insists this will not happen before 2010.

The Coach was linked with a job on the Azzurri bench over the last few months and makes no secret that he would be interested in the position, although it is not one of his current priorities.

"I don't think I will coach the Rossoneri all my life and I would one day like to work with the Nazionale, but not until after 2010," said Ancelotti, who is currently contracted to the San Siro outfit until 2008.

"I don't believe there will be any problems for my contract renewal. I still have a year here, there will be time to discuss," added the tactician in an interview to Radio Anch'io lo Sport.

"When this current adventure is over, I would like to coach the Azzurri squad."

The tactician then moved on to comment on the rumours of Andriy Shevchenko's possible return after his disappointing spell with Chelsea.

"We would be glad to have him back, but this is not a decision which depends on us," explained the former midfielder.

"Chelsea paid a lot for the player last year and I don't that they will let him leave, also because they will be without Didier Drogba for a few months because of the African Nations Cup."

There was controversy during the weekend when Ancelotti said that a star player who "nobody could suspect" had approached Milan looking for a transfer, as Inter chief Massimo Moratti declared that he did not appreciate the comments, allegedly referred to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"He is not the man I was talking about. He has played an excellent season and is glad at Inter. I only meant to say that there are many footballers interested in joining us and amongst them there is one that no one would ever imagine," concluded Ancelotti.

Donadoni Wants Nesta Back For Azzurri Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has made no secret of his desire to see Alessandro Nesta return to the international fold.

Donadoni Wants Nesta Back For Azzurri

The Milan midfielder has been away from action since the World Cup, and has recentely hinted at a full retirement to focus on his club career. cry.gif

However, Donandoni has urged the former Lazio man to consider a return.

"I hope that Nesta's decision is a temporary one," said Donadoni. "I try to be optimistic although it appears to be a definite decision.

"I don't interpret it as a refusal towards the national team.

"Whoever joins us must be fit, convinced and motivated. I believe that it would be pointless for the Federation to intervene on this matter.

"I have spoken to both Nesta and Totti and I have accepted their reasons. I look to the present and future, thinking about the players that are here and happy to be here.

"When I was a player, for me the Azzurri colours were the biggest ambition of all, and it really burned me when I wasn't included."

Marco Materazzi has done very well partnering Cannavaro, including at the World Cup, but Nesta is still a defender any coach would like to have in his side. As for Totti, it is expected that he will return to the Azzurri fold next season, when the pin in his foot is removed.

Totti And Nesta Warned Of Sanctions By FIGC

The Italian Football Federation have warned Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta that a failure to answer a national call-up could result in serious problems for them, and asked them to come clean.

FIGC President Giancarlo Abete has warned against players refusing to turn up for international duty, in as many words.

Nesta and Totti have both ruled themselves out of international football for the time being, and Abete insists that it is not good enough.

While he has no problems with the verbal understanding they seem to have with coach Roberto Donaoni, which is seeing them not being called up, he has insisted that it cannot be the case for the future.

"Platini's comment [that players be banned heavily for staying away from national teams] was entirely plausible and is shared by the Federation rules, as players who refuse the international call are in for suspension." said Abete.

Nesta, who seems to be ready to hang up his boots for good, got the lighter of the treatment.

"This is a difficult situation, though, as Nesta has asked to walk away after giving a great deal to the Nazionale and the Coach has agreed to let him take this move," he continued.

"We hope he will change his mind and that Totti can return in September, as he hinted, because Italy needs a player of his talent."

He then dropped his warning, suggesting that the Roma skipper needed to clarify his future once and for all, and either reach an understanding and retire for good, or make himself available.

"Right now Totti and Roberto Donadoni have discussed the matter and agreed to accept that decision. If Totti is called and he refuses, then that will be different.

"We will not arrive at September living in hope. We have to prepare for the future and that means knowing who will be with us and who will not."

Totti Promises Return To Azzurri Squad - Report

The captain of Roma declared that he will be ready to play for the Italian national side from this summer.

Exactly a year after announcing that he will take a long break from the world cup winning Azzurri side, Francesco Totti has decided that it is time to make a comeback in the most important phase of the Euro Qualifiers.

This was reported by the daily Italian newspaper 'Il Messaggero', who quoted Totti as saying that after the summer holidays, he will respond to the call-ups of current Italian national team coach Roberto Donadoni.

"I'll go for a holiday and then I will call (Gigi) Riva," declared the Roma player who has turned down all call-ups since the world cup final.

"I'm ready for the important matches of Italy," confirmed Totti.

This will be an important boost for the Azzurri who will be facing Ukraine and Scotland away from home, and hosting France in the coming months.

Oddo apologises for error

Massimo Oddo has explained what went wrong when the Faroe Islands scored an historic goal against Italy.

"Unfortunately it was three against one and I didn't spot in time the fact he had lost his marker," said the defender.

The Milan man was closest to Rogvi Jacobsen when he turned his towering header into the back of the net - only their second goal in qualifying.

Italy emerged 2-1 winners, but it was far from a vintage performance in the northern storms, particularly from the forwards.

"It was a match in which we created so many chances, but when you don't put it in the back of the net then you do run risks at the end. We poured forward a little too gung-ho and that left them room to counter."

Cristiano Lucarelli, Alessandro Del Piero and Aimo Diana all missed open goals, while Andrea Pirlo's free kick was tipped on to the woodwork.

"I would not make a drama out of it. You are bound to run into this type of problem with a side like the Faroe Islands. We didn't underestimate them, we just failed to kill them off earlier," insisted Oddo.

Totti Moves To Clear The Air

Francesco Totti has released the following statement on his website in a bid to avert the controversy following his statements yesterday, when he had said he was ready to return for the "important" games...

"As I prepare to leave for a holiday with my family, I am sorry to see that everyone's attention is focused on my presence in the Italy squad.

"This is not fair towards my teammates and friends who will play on Wednesday.

"I believe that we should hail the entire group, rather than concentrate on the individuals.

"This team was able to react to the crisis of Italian football and is trying with its hard work to continue what was started in Germany.

"I think I have proved my affection for the Azzurri jersey and my teammates last year.

"I am sure these men can keep on giving Italians moments of great joy, with or without Totti.

"As to my plans, when I return from my holidays I will speak to Donadoni and Gigi Riva, and we will decide together what is the best thing to do.

"Now we must only support the Nazionale and avoid useless controversy."

Azzurri: All change in Lithuania

Roberto Donadoni is ready to make five changes to his starting XI in Lithuania, including Gianluca Zambrotta, Daniele De Rossi and Fabio Quagliarella.

The Azzurri may have won 2-1 in the Faroe Islands to go second in Euro 2008 qualifying Group B, but it was hardly a vintage performance last Saturday and was criticised by the Press.

The Coach never disguised the fact he was aiming to make massive changes to his line-up over the space of this international week.
