Azzurri third for 2007
Monday 17 December, 2007 Italy will finish 2007 in third place in FIFA's World Rankings as Argentina take pole position. The Azzurri's successful Euro 2008 qualification campaign hasn't been enough to prevent Roberto Donadoni's men losing their grip on the top spot. Copa America runners-up Argentina stole first place from Italy in October and remain there despite their 3-0 defeat to Brazil in the Final. Italy's Euro 2008 Group opponents France and Holland are in seventh and eighth respectively and Romania are thirteenth. Top 10 in full: 1. Argentina 2. Brazil 3. Italy 4. Spain 5. Germany 6. Czech Republic 7. France 8. Portugal 9. Holland 10. Croatia » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Azzurri pick Euro 2008 base
Tuesday 18 December, 2007 Italy have booked the Austrian city of Baden as their base for the Euro 2008 tournament next summer. Baden is a spa town 26km south of Vienna that already hosts many Italian tourists, famed for its warm baths, casino and 120 vineyards. Coach Roberto Donadoni met with President Giancarlo Abete today to work out the arrangements for the squad. Training sessions will be at the nearby Sudstadt complex in Enzeldorf, which holds 20,000 people and hosts the home games for Austrian club Admira Wacker. The Azzurri are expected to fly in to begin preparations for the tournament a week before the June 7 opening ceremony. Italy are in Group C and will play all three of those games in Switzerland. The debut is on June 9 in Berne against Holland, then switching to Zurich for Romania on June 13 and France four days later. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Donadoni wants new contract
Wednesday 19 December, 2007 Azzurri boss Roberto Donadoni has confirmed that he will hold contract talks with the Italian Football Federation before Euro 2008. The former Milan midfielder is only tied to the FIGC until the end of June, but it seems that his future will now be decided before the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland. "We will certainly clarify my contract situation before the Euro Finals, that's only logical," noted the tactician on Wednesday evening. "FIGC President Giancarlo Abete is aware of this and he agrees with my logic on the matter. "However, let's not talk about any difficulties because there are none for anybody. We'll talk about the contract responsibly and with respect." Donadoni has been under immense pressure since taking over the side following Marcello Lippi's post Germany 2006 resignation. But things have eased on the inexperienced tactician, especially as one of his potential replacements - Fabio Capello - is now the England boss. "I'm happy for him," he said of his former Milan Coach. "To take charge of such an important national team shows the quality of Coaches brought up through the Italian scene." Turning to team selections for Euro 2008, Donadoni admitted that he is keeping an eye on Sampdoria fantasista Antonio Cassano. "I can mention a few names along with his," continued Don. "If players demonstrate that they deserve to be in the national side then I will be happy to evaluate their candidacy. "It all depends on the results they obtain, the equilibrium shown and the consistency they have this season." » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Azzurri's WC 2010 fixtures set
Tuesday 15 January, 2008 Italy have received their schedule for their World Cup 2010 qualification campaign and it kicks off with a trip to Cyprus. The world champions begin the qualification process in Nicosia on September 6 and then host Georgia. The toughest away games on paper against Bulgaria and the Republic of Ireland take place on October 11, 2008 and October 10, 2009 in a campaign that spans 13 months. Roberto Donadoni's men will have to negotiate games against Cyprus, Georgia, Bulgaria and Montenegro this year, but don't face the Republic of Ireland until 2009 Italy's World Cup 2010 qualification fixtures in full: September 6, 2008 - Cyprus (A) September 10, 2008 - Georgia (H) October 11, 2008 - Bulgaria (A) October 15, 2008 - Montenegro (H) March 28, 2009 - Montenegro (A) April 1, 2009 - Republic of Ireland (H) September 5, 2009 - Georgia (A) September 9, 2009 - Bulgaria (H) October 10, 2009 - Republic of Ireland (A) October 14, 2009 - Cyprus (H) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Donadoni respects WC opponents
Tuesday 15 January, 2008 The Azzurri have their fixtures for World Cup 2010 qualifying and Coach Roberto Donadoni isn't taking anything for granted. The World Cup holders are in a Group with Bulgaria, Republic of Ireland, Montenegro, Cyprus and Georgia. Qualification should be easily within Italy's grasp, but Donadoni is aware of the potential pitfalls. "It won't be an easy group," he insisted. "Besides Bulgaria, we mustn't underestimate Ireland and especially Montenegro, who have some top players who are plying their trade in top European Leagues. "Our proposal to play the games in pairs with gaps between each set of two was agreed and now we have a balanced schedule that you cannot fail to be happy with." FIGC President Giancarlo Abete was also delighted with the fixtures and the ease with which an agreement was found between the sides. "We are particularly happy with the welcome and the respect that everyone has shown us," he beamed. "Our fixture proposals were accepted and that is great considering that we can't use June 2009 because we will be in the Confederation Cup that FIFA have organised for a year before the World Cup." Italy kick off their World Cup 2010 qualification campaign away to Cyprus on September 6. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Ballack backing Italy
Tuesday 22 January, 2008 Italy will be favourites to win the 2008 European Championship, says Chelsea and Germany ace Michael Ballack. "Italy will obviously be favourites as they are the world champions," stated the former Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich star. "Then you must also have to consider teams like France, Spain and even Portugal when talking about possible winners." Germany qualified comfortably for the Finals after reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2006, but the midfielder is remaining cautious about his side's chances. "We are still not at the level of the other nations, so we can't be considered as one of the favourites," he concluded. Germany have been drawn in Group B of the competition along with Austria, Croatia and Poland. Roberto Donadoni's Italy will take on Romania, France and Holland in what has been widely dubbed as the Group of Death. Euro 2008 kicks off on June 7 with co-hosts Switzerland taking on the Czech Republic. The Final takes place on June 29 in Vienna. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Don: Italy duo "pulling a sickie"
Wednesday 23 January, 2008 Italy boss Roberto Donadoni has teased international pensioners Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta as "two children pulling a sickie." The Roma captain and Milan defender retired from international duty in 2007 after claiming they were no longer fit enough to maintain the packed club schedule and Azzurri games. However, their excuses have not entirely convinced Donadoni, who shamed them ahead of the Euro 2008 tournament. "They are like two children pulling a sickie, pretending they have tummy ache to avoid sitting a test in class," said the Coach. Donadoni made the metaphor in a special event with the children of a school in Cisano Bergamasco, his home region. Totti had 'temporarily' taken a year's Sabbatical from the Nazionale to fully recover from ankle surgery and it proved to be his best ever club campaign with a Capocannoniere title and European Golden Boot trophy for top scorer. He eventually decided to retire on a permanent basis and was swiftly followed by Milan defender Nesta. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Italy: Matrix ruled out
Tuesday 5 February, 2008 As suspected, Inter stopper Marco Materazzi has been forced to withdraw from Italy's squad to play Portugal on Wednesday. The pugnacious defender reported a back pain after the Nerazzurri's San Siro clash against Empoli last weekend, but still travelled to Zurich with the rest of the Azzurri squad. Materazzi had hoped to shrug off the problem, but was instead unable to train yesterday. An extended physiotherapy session doesn't seem to have put the Matrix back into contention for a place on Wednesday, so he will fly back to Italy later today. Fiorentina man Alessandro Gamberini has already been called up as a replacement and Roberto Donadoni will have just 19 men at his disposal after the withdrawal of Franco Semioli. http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=Post...2&qpid=15419307 |

U-21: Rossi brings down Dutch
Tuesday 5 February, 2008 Giuseppe Rossi inspired the Azzurrini to an impressive scalp in a 2-1 friendly victory over European champions Holland. Pierluigi Casiraghi opted for a 4-3-2-1 system headed by former Parma and Manchester United starlet Rossi, who has scored 10 goals in Spain for Villarreal. The Dutch had a good chance early on with Luyckx firing wide from a poor clearance, but Italy went ahead three minutes later. Rossi threaded through for Daniel Pablo Osvaldo to spring the offside trap and the Fiorentina striker swept it past goalkeeper Velthuizen. Coach Casiraghi made six substitutions at the break and moved Rossi's position, but he continued to dominate the squad. One of the new faces, Treviso's Russotto, drilled just wide and brought a tough save out of Velthuizen soon after stepping on to the field. But it was Rossi who doubled the advantage on 62 minutes when his left-foot strike from distance took a deflection off Drost. Holland got back into the game late on with an acrobatic Drenthe thunderbolt, but Donk's dismissal made a complete turnaround unlikely. It was a good performance from the Azzurrini, who are warming up for the Olympics in Beijing on August 6. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Azzurri: It's a Don deal
Tuesday 5 February, 2008 Roberto Donadoni's contract extension will be discussed straight after the Portugal friendly, confirmed the FIGC. The Italy Coach's current deal expires during the European Championships, which he qualified them for despite a shaky start. "We will discuss the matter immediately after Italy-Portugal," announced Federation President Giancarlo Abete (pictured). It is believed there will be a two-year extension drawn up with an improvement in economic terms, but some of the details could be based on what happens in Euro 2008. "The intent is there and we also both have the confidence we'll reach an agreement. We will see if we need a written statement or just a handshake between people who are accustomed to respecting agreements. "Is there a clause tying the extension to a good result in Euro 2008? First let me make my proposal to Donadoni," added Abete, hinting that success in Austria and Switzerland is crucial for the tactician's future. Although the Azzurri won the 2006 World Cup, they exited Euro 2004 in the first round, a result that saw Giovanni Trapattoni leave the post. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Italy: Doubting Donadoni
Tuesday 5 February, 2008 Italy boss Roberto Donadoni says he trusts the FIGC's promise of a new contract, but won't accept a simple handshake deal. This evening Federation President Giancarlo Abete refused to rule out the possibility that an extension would depend on how the Azzurri do at Euro 2008 and hinted a verbal agreement could be enough. "The intent is there and we also both have the confidence we'll reach an agreement. We will see if we need a written statement or just a handshake between people who are accustomed to respecting agreements. "Is there a clause tying the extension to a good result in Euro 2008? First let me make my proposal to Donadoni," added Abete. The Coach is on board with this plan - but only to a degree, as his contract expires during the tournament. "I am not one of those people who think words dissipate into the air, but certain things ought to be written down in black and white," noted Donadoni. "I trust the word I have been given and when the moment comes we will sit down and I will calmly evaluate the proposal of the FIGC." The negotiations should take place straight after Wednesday night's friendly test against Portugal. "For me Coaching is a wonderful thing, whether you are in charge of the Nazionale or a club. I must say what I have experienced in my 18 months with the Azzurri has made me happy." Donadoni was under fire from the Italian media and expected to be fired during the qualifying campaign, but the tide turned when a 2-1 victory in Scotland sent them into Euro 2008 by topping the group. In the tournament itself this summer, the Azzurri will face France, Holland and Romania in the so-called Group of Death. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Italy: Portuguese peril
Tuesday 5 February, 2008 Italy cannot underestimate Portugal, who provide a test for the Euro 2008 clash with Romania, warns Roberto Donadoni. On Wednesday evening the Azzurri will face Cristiano Ronaldo's side on Swiss soil in Zurich, an apt location as this summer's tournament will be held in Austria and Switzerland. "In terms of experience and quality, this Portugal can be compared to Romania. I told the players to be very careful, as they risk being humiliated," said the Coach. "Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world and is improving, so he is at Kaka's level now, even though saying he is the same as the Brazilian is stretching it." Italy are now on the road to Euro 2008 and are in the so-called Group of Death along with France, Holland and Romania. Would Donadoni be content just to get through the first round? "To then go out in the quarter-finals, you mean? My character means I never settle for less. I have been in charge of the Italy squad with enthusiasm and desire." Yet he was on the chopping block before a 2-1 victory in Scotland booked their place in the competition. "Of course there have been things I would've gladly avoided, but that is true of all jobs. This is my philosophy, I always seek the best." This is an opportunity for Donadoni to experiment with new faces and tactical systems, moving from the 4-3-2-1 to a Roma-style 4-2-3-1 led by Luca Toni. Raffaele Palladino is set to repeat his Juventus switch to the right channel and Antonio Di Natale maintains his spot on the left, with Simone Perrotta likely to be the middle man. An all-Milan central midfield duo of Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini should step aside for Daniele De Rossi in the second half, as the teams are allowed six substitutions. Among those bound to appear are Genoa hitman Marco Borriello, who earned his debut Italy call-up after netting 12 Serie A goals this season. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Canna: We're ready for Portugal
Wednesday 6 February, 2008 Fabio Cannavaro insists the Italy camp is calm ahead of tonight's game with Portugal, despite an injury crisis and Roberto Donadoni's contract issues. The world champions take on Portugal in Zurich this evening as the first of their warm-up games before Euro 2008. Roberto Donadoni's original squad has been reduced to 19 men as Fiorentina winger Franco Semioli and Inter stopper Marco Materazzi have been forced to pull out with injuries and first-choice 'keeper Gigi Buffon is also sidelined. "It's true that there are lots of injuries, but the mentality of this side goes beyond that," Cannavaro maintained. "Portugal are good at moving the ball around, but I think that we can impose ourselves on them." There has been speculation that uncertainty over Donadoni's contract renewal may unsettle the preparations, but the former Juventus skipper claims that has not been the case. "Donadoni has proven his quality already as it wasn't easy to come in after we had just won the World Cup," Cannavaro said. "Now we are just thinking about having a great European Championships - it's not about anything else." http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/feb6b.html |

international friendly - February 6, 2008
Italy 3 - 1 Portugal Toni 45 (I), Cannavaro 49 (I), Quaresma 77 (P), Quagliarella 78 (I) Letzigrund Stadion, Zurich Luca Toni, Fabio Cannavaro and Fabio Quagliarella secured a confident 3-1 friendly victory over Portugal on Marco Borriello's Italy debut. This warm-up friendly for two teams competing in Euro 2008 was played in one of the stadiums that will be used in the tournament in Zurich. Gigi Buffon, Gennaro Gattuso and Marco Materazzi were injured, while Raffaele Palladino was tested in wide midfield. Italy debuted their new jersey for the competition. Portugal had the first chance, a relatively harmless looping header from Inter signing Nuno Maniche plucked by Marco Amelia. The Azzurri hit the back of the net after five minutes with Andrea Pirlo's rising strike from just inside the area, but the referee controversially disallowed it, claiming he had handled Gianluca Zambrotta's cross from the left. Replays suggest the ball bounced off his chest. Massimo Ambrosini's glancing header from a Pirlo free kick was well held by Ricardo, but Antonio Di Natale was inches away from tapping in Massimo Oddo's cross. The Portuguese fought back and Bruno Alves was allowed a free header at the near post, nodding the corner over the bar. Ricardo Quaresma set up Deco to fire wide, though in this case there did appear to be a handling offence. A splendid team move almost gave Italy the advantage on 27 minutes. Raffaele Palladino cut in from the right and Toni's dummy left it for Di Natale, whose right-foot first-time strike was fingertipped round the post. From the resulting corner Daniele De Rossi nodded wide. Zambrotta limped off with an upper thigh problem soon after and made way for fellow 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Grosso. An Oddo sliding tackle closed down Ronaldo in the box, then launched a Di Natale counter that bounced awkwardly for Toni clear on goal. A Makukula snapshot skimmed the far post in their best chance of the game so far, but on 41 minutes Amelia got down well to parry a fierce Ronaldo free kick. Italy threatened with a fine move between Di Natale, Toni, Palladino and Pirlo, but Quaresma was one-on-one on the counter and his pass to an unmarked Ronaldo was too long. In first half stoppages the deadlock was finally broken. Grosso got down the left flank and his cross found Toni to slide in the finish from six yards. The goalkeeper, Ricardo Carvalho and Bruno Alves all failed to cut out the danger and Toni was alert at the back post. Manchester United man Nani was introduced in the second half, but Italy had another good chance with Toni's header well over. There was a fantastic opportunity as a Pirlo pass over the top found Di Natale, closed down for Toni and a deflection stopped him tipping it over the line. From the resulting corner kick Pirlo thought he had his name on the scoresheet after all, a right-foot volley deflected off Fabio Cannavaro to bounce past Ricardo at the near post. However, the goal was later credited to Cannavaro, so another disappointment for Pirlo. Roberto Donadoni made his first tactical changes, throwing on Alessandro Gamberini of Fiorentina in place of Andrea Barzagli and Simone Perrotta for Roma teammate De Rossi. It was a very open and entertaining game now as Ricardo performed a brilliant reaction save on Di Natale, who ran on to Palladino's pass with a smart diagonal run. Bosingwa required a splendid challenge to stop Di Natale completing his combination with Toni and on the counter Cannavaro cut short Ronaldo's progress. More magnificent Di Natale-Grosso interplay got the crowd on their feet and Portugal scrambled it out for a corner, from which Cannavaro crossed to the unmarked Palladino at the back post. The Juventus youngster chested and volleyed on to the bar thanks to Ricardo's fingertip save! Had it not been for Ricardo, that would've been one of the goals of the season. Nani went on a slalom in the Azzurri area, but Oddo's muscle and a sliding Cannavaro tackle managed to close him down without conceding a penalty. Marco Borriello made his senior Italy debut, the 20th player to get his first cap under Donadoni, earning the call after netting 12 goals for Genoa this season. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

Canna eyes back-to-back gold
Wednesday 6 February, 2008 Fabio Cannavaro wants a Euro 2008 title to follow the World Cup and explains why Italy now take friendlies seriously. The captain got a touch to Andrea Pirlo's strike in the 3-1 victory over Portugal and the goal has now been credited to him, only his second international success. "My deflection was incredibly important and I practised it in training! At least it proves Naples doesn't just create rubbish," joked Cannavaro. It was a confident and energetic performance, particularly in the second half, as Luca Toni and Fabio Quagliarella also hit the target. "I don't think we used to snub friendlies in other years either, such as when we beat Holland and Germany. The Nazionale has grown so much in recent years, fighting for every game, entertaining, winning and scoring goals. "The secret is that the new faces come into a group that is already solid and tries to improve with each day. The newcomers see that and settle in to the mentality. "Victories like this certainly bring confidence and help you to prepare for the tournament. However, we must put the World Cup behind us and not think about it anymore, as this is a different competition with other teams. "I'd like to follow France in winning the World Cup and European Championship back to back." Roberto Donadoni notched up his sixth consecutive win with the Azzurri as the warm-up for Euro 2008 continued. "Donadoni replaced a World Cup winner and did brilliantly to reinvigorate and motivate players who risked falling by the wayside. He has earned all of our respect and admiration," said Cannavaro. The tactician's contract expires in the summer and he is in negotiations with the Federation over a new deal that may or may not be tied to results in Switzerland and Austria. "It's only normal that the Coach would want a safe contract so that everyone can work in a relaxed atmosphere. It is something the FIGC has already discussed and I'm sure they will come to an agreement." » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |
