Totti's message for Marcello
Tuesday 1 July, 2008
Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi welcomed Marcello Lippi back to the Azzurri job.

“I want to wish Lippi and his staff the best, as I have an excellent rapport of personal and professional respect with them,” said the Roma captain.

It has been said that Lippi's return will convince Totti to come out of international retirement for the 2010 World Cup.

He has been out of action since April after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is not expected back until at least September.

“At this moment in time my only thought is on the recovery process,” insisted Totti.

His Roma teammate De Rossi is definitely a part of the Nazionale's plans and hopes to make up for his miss in the Euro 2008 penalty shoot-out against Spain.

“I would be very happy if Totti returned,” said the young midfielder. “I speak to him about everything, but not this.

“When a Coach changes, everything does, but here he would be returning to the same staff as in the 2006 World Cup. This tournament always gives you extra motivation.”

Roberto Donadoni parted company with the Federation after only reaching the quarter-finals of the European Championship.

“I was very disappointed for Donadoni and spoke to him a few days ago,” continued De Rossi.

“It is above all a shame considering the difficult atmosphere he had to work in. Of course, if I hadn't missed that penalty, something might have changed for him.”

The midfielder is nonetheless very pleased to welcome Lippi back to the bench after winning a World Cup medal with him.

“Lippi is the one who launched my international career and played me in the Final when nobody else had faith in me.”

De Rossi was suspended for much of the competition after elbowing Brian McBride during a 1-1 draw with the USA.

Italy on Spain's heels
Wednesday 2 July, 2008
Spain have risen to the top of FIFA’s World Rankings, but Italy have moved into second place.

After securing their first major honour for 44 years by lifting the European Championship trophy, Spain have moved up three places in FIFA’s hierarchy to sit on top of the world.

Surprisingly, in spite of a disappointing quarter-final exit in Austria and Switzerland, Italy have managed to climb one spot to second.

New boss Marcello Lippi now has the task of restoring the Azzurri to the summit, where they were after he guided Italy to glory at World Cup 2006.

Euro 2008 runners-up Germany have moved into third and Holland climb five places to fifth.

Croatia, who suffered quarter-final heartbreak from the penalty spot against Turkey, are on the up after rising eight places to seventh position.

The big losers are South American giants Brazil and Argentina, who have fallen to fourth and sixth respectively after hesitant starts to their World Cup 2010 qualification campaign.

FIFA World Rankings Top 10:

1. Spain
2. Italy
3. Germany
4. Brazil
5. Holland
6. Argentina
7. Croatia
8. Czech Republic
9. Portugal
10. France

Thrilling Under-19s reach Euro semi
Sunday 20 July, 2008
Italy's Under-19 squad is in the European Championship semi-final thanks to a dramatic 4-3 win over their Czech hosts.

The Azzurrini led by Coach Francesco Rocca finished top of Group B with five points, just one more than England and the Czech Republic.

It took an extraordinary encounter to secure their spot in the semi-final, as Italy twice threw away their lead.

Andrea Poli opened the scoring on Alberto Paloschi's cutback following good work from Roma youth product Stefano Okaka Chuka.

Less than 60 seconds later, the Czechs were back level through tournament top scorer Tomas Necid's angled drive.

Goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo denied Lukas Marecek and Jan Moravek, but it was substitute Giacomo Bonaventura who grabbed headlines by smashing in a fierce strike from 25 metres.

Defence has been a problem for this Italy side and once again they lost their advantage after the unmarked Petr Reinberk set up Moravek's equaliser.

Milan starlet Paloschi earned and converted a penalty, then Poli's second of the game on Okaka Chuka's assist put the result beyond doubt regardless of a late Moravek effort and Mazzarani's 75th-minute dismissal.

This result means England's 3-0 win over Greece does not stop Italy from winning Group B. It was their first win of the tournament after a 1-1 draw with Greece and 0-0 stalemate against England.

The Azzurrini set up their semi-final date with either Germany or Hungary, to be played on July 23.

Italy Under-19: Fiorillo, Darmian, Formiconi (Tagliani 89), Albertazzi, Bruscagin, Garibaldi, Mazzarani, Poli, Forestieri (Bonaventura 46), Paloschi (Marchetti 78), Okaka Chuka

Azzurrini reach Under-19 Final
Wednesday 23 July, 2008

Italy are in the European Under-19 Championship Final after defeating Hungary with Fernando Forestieri’s goal.

Coach Francesco Rocca’s lads squeezed past their semi-final opponents 1-0 thanks to the Genoa striker, who spent last season on loan at Siena.

Forestieri, who is of Argentine origin, netted the angled drive 65 minutes into the match on Silvano Raggio Garibaldi’s assist for Italy’s first Final since 2003.

It was another less than assured performance, however, from the side that only reached this phase after a thrilling 4-3 victory over hosts the Czech Republic.

Goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo was repeatedly called into action in the first half, although matters calmed down considerably after the break.

There was late drama at both ends in stoppages, as Stefano Okaka Chuka’s shot was pushed on to the post and Hungary threatened a stoppage-time equaliser when Gosztonyi also shook the woodwork.

Italy are in Saturday’s Final in Jablonec, where they will face off with Germany, who beat the Czech Republic 2-1 after extra time in the other semi-final.

Olympics: Korea Rocchi'd
Sunday 10 August, 2008
Italy are in the Olympic quarter-finals after thrashing South Korea 3-0 with Tommaso Rocchi, Giuseppe Rossi and Riccardo Montolivo.

If Cameroon fail to beat Honduras in their last game, the Azzurrini will be mathematically top of the group.

Lazio striker Rocchi recovered from a calf problem to start his first Beijing game, while Marco Motta and Andrea Coda also stepped in after missing the 3-0 victory over Honduras.

Sebastian Giovinco was the star of that opener and almost broke the deadlock after seven minutes when stinging Jung Sung Ryon’s gloves with a free kick.

Rocchi was halted for an incorrect offside decision as he ran on to Antonio Nocerino’s assist and Shin Young Rok just failed to connect to a dangerous Oh Jang Eun cross.

Rossi finally opened the scoring on 16 minutes. Riccardo Montolivo’s searching pass found Rocchi for a charged down volley, but Rossi was quickest to the loose ball for a left-foot finish.

Bocchetti was unlucky to nod a Rossi free kick inches over the bar and Viviano smothered a Park Chu Young set-piece.

Italy: Alex takes on Austria
Wednesday 20 August, 2008
Marcello Lippi has picked a trident attack for his first friendly against Austria, as Antonio Di Natale, Alberto Gilardino and Alex Del Piero lead the way.

The Coach had hinted he would adopt a 4-3-3 formation in the French city of Nice, although there were some doubts over the starting XI.

Udinese star Di Natale won the challenge with Vincenzo Iaquinta to begin upfront, while Gennaro Gattuso pushes Alberto Aquilani on to the bench.

The central defence is completely revamped due to a number of injuries to Fabio Cannavaro, Marco Materazzi and Giorgio Chiellini, so Milan’s Daniele Bonera hooks up with Wolfsburg man Andrea Barzagli.

Check back for half and full-time reports, plus extensive post-match comments.

Italy: Buffon; Zambrotta, Bonera, Barzagli, Grosso; Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi; Di Natale, Gilardino, Del Piero

Italy bench: Amelia, Cassetti, Legrottaglie, Dossena, Aquilani, Perrotta, Palombo, Iaquinta, Camoranesi

Austria: Manninger; Garics, Prodl, Stranzl, Pogatetz; Scharner, Saumel, Harnik, Ivanschitz, Fuchs; Maierhofer

Austria bench: Oczan, Gercallu, Ibertsberger. Leitgeb, Standfest, Hoffer, Klenast, Linz, Janko

Cannavaro set for comeback
Friday 22 August, 2008
Fabio Cannavaro is back in action this weekend and could return for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers in September.

The 2006 Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year has been sidelined since fracturing his ankle during a training session just days before the start of Euro 2008.

He was expected to be out for considerably longer, but is already heading back to the playing field this weekend.

Cannavaro has been named in Real Madrid’s squad for the Spanish Super Cup clash with Valencia.

It is a major boost for the Azzurri, who showed real defensive frailties during Marcello Lippi’s debut, a 2-2 draw with Austria on Wednesday night.

Andrea Barzagli and Daniele Bonera did not forge a solid central defensive partnership, while Giorgio Chiellini is out until October and Marco Materazzi is also sidelined.

Italy begin their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign in Cyprus on September 6 and then return to the peninsula against Georgia on September 10.

Italy: Cannavaro's comeback
Sunday 31 August, 2008
Fabio Cannavaro and Luca Toni are back for the World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus and Georgia, but there’s still no room for Antonio Cassano.

Marcello Lippi has stuck with much the same squad that drew 2-2 with Austria in a friendly earlier this month, with the return of Cannavaro and Toni from injury.

The World Cup winning captain and 2006 Ballon d’Or makes his comeback for the first time since fracturing a bone in his foot just days before the start of Euro 2008.

It is an important return, as Italy have to do without the injured Giorgio Chiellini and Marco Materazzi at centre-back.

As expected, Sampdoria starlet Cassano has been left out again by Lippi despite his good show at the European Championships this summer.

Gennaro Gattuso is in the side, although he missed Milan’s 2-1 defeat to Bologna today due to a shoulder injury he sustained while on international duty.

The Azzurri begin their 2010 qualifying campaign on September 6 away to Cyprus and then welcome Georgia to the Stadio Friuli in Udine on September 10.

Italy squad:
Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Palermo), De Sanctis (Galatasaray)
Defenders: Barzagli (Wolfsburg), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Cassetti (Roma), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Lyon), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Zambrotta (Milan)
Midfielders: Aquilani (Roma), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Palombo (Sampdoria), Pirlo (Milan)
Forwards: Del Piero (Juventus), Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Toni (Bayern Munich)

Lippi plots return to glory
Tuesday 2 September, 2008
Marcello Lippi is hoping to lead Italy to World Cup glory once again in South Africa but first he must negotiate qualification.

The world champions begin their 2010 qualification road with a trip to Cyprus on Saturday before hosting Georgia on Wednesday.

And Lippi's first friendly of his second reign, which ended in a 2-2 draw with Austria, confirmed that there is work to do if he is to restore the Azzurri to glory.

“After the first week of the championship there is some fatigue and so I gave the players some rest yesterday,” Lippi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Today has also been dedicated to recovery but tomorrow we will begin work with intensity.

“Alberto Aquilani has a pain in his heel and is working without a ball and Legrottaglie is doing less strenuous exercises.

“But everyone will be available tomorrow. I expect to play different sides in the two games and so there are lots of solutions.”

Italy are expected to dispose of minnows Cyprus, but Lippi is taking nothing for granted.

“The more we think it will be easy, the more difficult it will be,” the veteran tactician explained.

“This is the first game on the road to repeating Berlin. I didn't just come back to win but to rebuild a winning foundation.

“However, we will remember that we have the world champions' logo on our shirts and we will be united and full of intent.”

There have been murmurings about Lippi's decision to leave Antonio Cassano, Mario Balotelli, Massimo Ambrosini and Marco Materazzi out of his squad.

“I have nothing against the people who didn't make it,” Lippi said. “For one thing I would have called Riccardo Montolivo and Giuseppe Rossi if they were available.

“I respect Ambrosini as a player and a professional but I have to make my decisions.

“As for Marco, he is still suffering from an injury and I would rather call Fabio Cannavaro and not take any risks.

“I am also watching Mario Balotelli because he is a promising youngster. I like him a lot and I think he'll become an important player.”

Balotelli: At last an Italy goal!

Friday 5 September, 2008
Mario Balotelli is very proud to have grabbed a goal on his long-awaited Azzurrini debut. “I passionately wanted to wear this shirt.”

The 18-year-old could not play for his adopted country until he achieved citizenship last month, as his adoption by an Italian family at the age of two was never made legal.

The Inter striker finally managed to make his first appearance for the Under-21 squad and scored in tonight's 1-1 draw with Greece.

“I am very happy with the goal, less so for the result, but that is part of football. Both teams played well and on a personal level I am fairly content, although one can always do better.”

He nearly bagged more goals in Castel di Sangro, including a spectacular overhead kick that skimmed the woodwork.

“In the first half I thought my shot was on target, but it was just off. The overhead kick came out well, but unfortunately not quite well enough!

“My Serie A goal was great, although if you play enough games in the top flight you're bound to score. The Italy goal was special as I waited so long and passionately wanted to wear this shirt.

“These are different things and two great sensations.”

Balotelli is only 18, but due to his citizenship problems was unable to play for the various youth set-ups, so he has gone straight in at Under-21 level.

“When you play with figures of this quality, it all becomes easier. We got on right away and I settled very quickly.”

Zambro in England attack
Friday 5 September, 2008
Milan's Azzurri defender Gianluca Zambrotta has hit out at English football after recent criticism of Serie A in the nation's Press.

An article in The Times recently described Italy's top flight as “a retirement home for old players” and “a get rich quick scheme.”

However, Zambro, who moved from Barcelona to Milan at the start of the summer, has defended his homeland.

“What makes me laugh is that the English are always the first to talk when they should be the last,” the former Juventus defender growled.

“They should take a look at themselves because they didn't even qualify for Euro 2008.

“As for Serie A being a retirement home, I'm sure that's what I need at the age of 31. I have all the experience to be able to motivate myself.

“Personally I think that the quality of our First Division has improved, but then again you have the same old certainties like Maurizio Zamparini firing his Coach after the first game!”

Zambrotta is on call with Italy for their trip to Lanarca to face Cyprus in their opening World Cup 2010 qualifier tomorrow evening.

World Cup qualifier - September 6, 2008

Cyprus 1 - 2 Italy
Di Natale 7, 92 (I), Aloneftis 27 ©
Larnaca

Italy were extremely fortunate to grab a 2-1 win in Cyprus with Antonio Di Natale completing his brace in stoppages. It was a dismal performance and the Cypriots probably deserved more than a mere point, let alone this defeat.

Marcello Lippi's second Azzurri stint officially kicked off in Cyprus with the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. Fabio Cannavaro also returned for the first game since a devastating ankle injury on the eve of Euro 2008, joined in central defence by Alessandro Gamberini for the sidelined Giorgio Chiellini. As Alessandro Del Piero was suffering from a thigh problem, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino forged a new partnership in a very attacking formation. They hadn't lined up together since the World Cup against Australia.

It was also an historic occasion, as for the first time Italy wore the World Cup winners' badge on their all-white shirts. Curiously, in the previous six meetings the Azzurri only failed to win once, a 1-1 draw by Enzo Bearzot's World Cup holders in 1983.

In a disastrous start, Gamberini fell awkwardly just 60 seconds into the game and damaged his shoulder, making way for Andrea Barzagli.

Cyprus certainly didn't sit back, as moments later Gianluigi Buffon needed a great reaction save to palm away Aloneftis' header at the back post from the dangerous Nikolau cross.

Makridis ran at Barzagli and had penalty appeals for a risky challenge from the Wolfsburg player. From the resulting corner on six minutes, Buffon was again called into a desperate save on Kostantinou from five yards!

Buffon rushes to Italy's rescue
Saturday 6 September, 2008
Gianluigi Buffon was Man of the Match in Cyprus, though he explains “that is what a goalkeeper is for.”

The shot-stopper kept out several great chances so that Italy could snatch a barely-deserved 2-1 win in stoppages.

“Of course you expect Italy to come to Cyprus and win fairly comfortably, so this is really not what we expected,” said the Juventus star.

“In these situations every element has to be taken into account. It was clear that Cyprus had an extra gear in physical terms, which got worse when we lost two players in the opening 15 minutes to injury.”

The Azzurri fielded an all-attack formation with Mauro Camoranesi, Antonio Di Natale, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino together, but found themselves hopelessly unbalanced.

“It was certainly surprising with the way we were set out that Cyprus did not focus on defence. They wanted to take it to us and created real problems by spreading out wide and out-numbering us.

“We made mistakes too by missing easy passes, so that increased the Cypriot confidence and made it even more difficult.”

In the first half, in particular, the home team tested Buffon
n repeatedly.

“The start was such a chaotic run of shots that I can't remember which save was toughest! This is what a goalkeeper is for, though, to be ready when the others are struggling physically.

“Their job usually is to work hard to ensure I don't have to do much, so it is only right that sometimes I get them out of trouble.

“At the end of the day you can play with three strikers, but it depends on how fit and sharp they are, as they have to come back and help out in midfield.

“The Coach saw at half-time that Cyprus were constantly crowding us out and taking the numerical advantage, so he introduced Gennaro Gattuso to balance things out a bit.”

Buffon also commented on the transfer rumour that Manchester City are preparing a £60m bid.

“I like football, not fantasy football, so that story doesn't even deserve a comment.”

Italy: No replacements called
Sunday 7 September, 2008
Marcello Lippi will not call any replacements for Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Gamberini for the game against Georgia.

Both defenders sustained serious injuries during the opening 15 minutes of last night’s 2-1 win in Cyprus.

Grosso has been diagnosed with two fractured ribs and could be out of action for around a month, while Gamberini dislocated his right shoulder.

Lippi was expected to call two replacements ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier with Georgia at the Stadio Friuli.

However, he surprisingly announced that he did not intend to bring in reinforcements for an area of the team already without the injured Giorgio Chiellini.

It is a particular concern, as the defence seemed shaky in Cyprus with Andrea Barzagli and Marco Cassetti stepping in to replace the injured players.

The Nazionale has flown back to the peninsula and will take part in a training session this afternoon at the Gradisca d’Isonzo ground.

Gattuso suffers freak fracture!
Sunday 7 September, 2008
Another bizarre injury has struck the Azzurri, as Gennaro Gattuso fell into the dug-out and with multiple fractures to his left hand.

The Milan midfielder was taking part in a friendly run-out with the Beretti team of unemployed players at the Gradisca d’Isonzo training ground this afternoon.

He tumbled into the dug-out where the Italian bench was placed, hitting his head and left hand.

Gattuso was taken to hospital for X-Rays, where he was found to have sustained multiple fractures to his left hand and wrist. He has already undergone surgery to reduce the breaks.

Obviously this rules him out of Wednesday’s encounter with Georgia.

It is the latest odd injury to strike the Italy squad during these 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Fabio Grosso fractured two ribs during a fall in the 2-1 win in Cyprus last night and Alessandro Gamberini dislocated his right shoulder just 60 seconds into the same match.

Gamberini’s shoulder was in such a bad state that he had to be put under general anaesthetic in the local hospital for medics to pop it back into place.

Italy 2-0 Georgia: De Rossi double keeps record

Updated: September 10, 2008, 8:00 AM UK
UDINE, September 10 (World Cup Qualifying) - Italy made it two wins out of two as they continued the defence of their World Cup crown with a win over Georgia.

Daniele De Rossi provided both goals for the Azzurri, who looked much-improved on their fortunate 2-1 triumph over Cyprus on Saturday but still far from the sort of form which took them to the title in 2006.

The Roma midfielder scored in the 17th and 90th minutes, keeping coach Marcello Lippi's 27-game unbeaten streak intact on a warm and humid evening in Udine.

Lippi made his intentions clear when he presented an attack-minded 4-3-3 formation with Luca Toni, Mauro Camoranesi and local boy Antonio Di Natale leading the forward line.

Toni looked much livelier than he did against Cyprus four days ago, where he was withdrawn at half-time, and had claims for a penalty early on.

The Bayern Munich striker appeared to have shrugged off the attentions of Milan's Kakha Kaladze, but he was not able to proceed any further inside the penalty area and fell to the ground dramatically.

Austrian referee Thomas Einwaller justifiably waved away his appeal.

Di Natale, the Udinese forward, came close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute when latched on to Toni's pass, but he pulled his shot just wide.

In the 17th minute De Rossi collected the ball 30 yards out and, having no passes on, unleashed a thunderbolt into the top right-hand corner, giving Italy a deserved lead.

The first time Georgia entered the final third of the field almost resulted in an equaliser.

Teenager Levan Kenia broke with Levan Mchedlidze against Italy defenders Fabio Cannavaro and Nicola Legrottaglie, and the Georgia duo carved their way through well.

Mchedlidze pulled out to the left to receive the ball from Kenia, who continued his run into space in the centre of the penalty area and when the ball came his way it appeared he had the simplest of tap-ins, but he somehow contrived to trap the ball between his legs.

The chance served as a warning to Italy, who moved down the gears and reverted to containment tactics rather than all-out attack.

After reorganising with Angelo Palombo and Alessandro Del Piero entering the fray, Italy slowly began moving back up the gears.

Del Piero ghosted into the penalty area before firing just over the crossbar in the 68th minute, shortly after Alberto Aquilani found no takers for his dangerous low cross.

There were still hints of danger at the other end with Kenia and Levan Kobiashvili both providing moments of discomfort for the Italy defence.

But De Rossi eased the tension when he finished low into the far left corner after being sent clear by Del Piero in the final minute.
