$80 is highway robbery to install a pickup, which you can do yourself in half an hour. Even adding in a preamp, with parts you can buy at Pasar Road, will cost you less than $20. Very simple job, really. Make a sketch of which color wires of the pickup are connected where, desolder them, unscrew the cover, take out old pickup. Screw in new pickup, solder the wires (two to five) to the selector switch and back of the volume pot to earth it. Look at the diagram which comes with your new pickup, it should tell you everything. |

QUOTE(breadfan311 @ Sep 24 2010, 02:24 PM) Anyone can recommend any music shop in Penang that can help to change the pickups (SSH) cheaper. Most of the music shops I've asked cost more than RM100 and this does not covers intonation and neck adjustment. One shop even charge RM80 for changing a single pickup. RM100?? That is daylight robbery !! |

I wouldnt put a 36th paf on the bridge for metal. Ive tried paf pro though and its lovely.. very singing tone but still good enough for some metal. for higher gain i would go for a norton, it kills in a les paul.
59/JB is an popular selection too, although i prefer them in longer scale, bright guitars (Jacksons, Teles). |

I was just thinking that since i'm on a tight budget... I wanna get a Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 and change the stock pickups to a Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro/Slash set, do you think it's a good idea? I kinda have zero knowledge in pickup modifying..
Ps. If i post this in a wrong section, i'm very sorry mod, could not find a suitable place. Thanks! |

Changing humbucker to humbucker not that hard actually..
Any fitting that is 1 to 1 is so simple..can't say the same if you're changing to single coil pickups though If you're uncertain on how to use a soldering iron and confused which wires should go where then get a luthier to do it for you.. |

Good idea. imagine your guitar is a car. The pickups are the engines of your car. Sometimes people puy cheaper car, but put better engine, and then..wah lau....they potong u kaw2 atas highway! haha...
If the built quality and playability are your priority, invest for better guitar. Pickup can always wait, until your budget is enough. Like a car la..you still moving, but a bit slow. haha If you are after tonal quality, I would say pickup changing is a good way to go. Good for experiment too (the potentio meter difference, switching/linking and pickup splitting stuff). But if you dont have electronic basics, hantar to guitar techs terus la bang.. Anyway, keep on rocking |

Why not? You can always switch over the pickups to your new guitar if you
decide to get one. I would think twice about installing the Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pros in though. They're lower output pickups and are quite dark. I found that I prefer them in my maple neck telecaster than in my LP. |

Suddenly saw this thread on the front page, I have some questions too hehe
EMG pickup covers for 7 strings (or any other actives) are based on a bass housing IINM? Are those available in chrome, or possible to make it chrome? And, is the cover detachable? |

QUOTE(Apple_DarreN @ Nov 14 2010, 10:19 PM) u know those bright sounding guitars.. like strats and teles? like RHCP's frusciante's guitar tone? think the opposite.. that's dark. Slash's LPs are with A2Pros, which contributes to his warm tones.I think LPs without the maple top (like the Epi Specials) might get overly dark with a pickup like Alnico 2 Pros. In my experience the one i put on the neck of my LP lacks a bit clarity on cleans, and might get muddy with more gain. But if you get a good guitar that compliments it well, you'll be surprised by the natural tone that comes through this pickups. But in the end it depends on what you play la.. for blues/classic rock i'll recommend them wholeheartedly. |
