Urggh.. i bought a SGT P1000BUJI3/BUJI4. Should've read here first. In any case here's some question.

Since its not in the first post, from google its a voda unit? but not sure if US/UK. I would have to patch to unlock the bootloader?

Do i need permanent root or just temp will do? Used z4root. Interested in converting to Ext4 and deciding should i go Overcome or MoDoCo. Any comments?

I've backup using TB with all user apps + system data. Read earlier post that i shouldn't backup system data? Or just shouldn't restore system data?

Thx in advance. Look at the time.. time flies when messing with tab biggrin.gif

Well, there's no harm to permanently rooting your phone, save for the debate about warranty of course, which I won't get into here... anyway, with regards to Overcome vs Modaco, well, I'm a tad biased towards Overcome, but here's my thoughts. Paul's Modaco ROM is a solid, stable ROM that is great for people that want a decent, optimised ROM for day to day use based on the stock version. However, there's not much updates that's being done on it.

Overcome, on the other hand, can be viewed like the cutting/bleeding edge development of Galaxy Tab ROMs... constantly updated and tweaked, with rapid-fire updates, which sometimes have some small, niggling bugs due to the constant tweaking for maximum performance and efficiency. However, don't take it to mean that it's not stable. It's solid enough for me for day to day use, to the point that I can even UNDERCLOCK the CPU to save battery life, due to its smoothness. I'm running at 800Mhz now but gives me the performance of Modaco running at 1.2Ghz.

So it's a trade-off that you'll have to decide for yourself. A rock-solid, no-fuss Modaco ROM or an extremely fast and inherently tweakable Overcome ROM, albeit with the small, minor bugs (that most Malaysians would probably not notice.) BTW, the latest Overcome ROM is based on the North Asian Froyo 2.2.1 base as compared to the European 2.2 Froyo base that Modaco is running. Both this ROMs are permanently rooted anyway, so the question of to root your Tab temporarily or permanently is moot when running these ROMs. :-)

(Anyway, should you choose to try out the Overcome ROM, do remember to grab the installation guide as well as the tips & tweaks guide that I've written. It's available on the first post in the Overcome thread at XDA. Just follow the installation guide exactly and you shouldn't have any issues....)

As to Titanium Backup... here's a constant rule of thumb that I'll always advise users. Backup and restore User Apps (and data) Only! NEVER EVER BACKUP SYSTEM APP & DATA, MUCH LESS RESTORING THEM! Restoring system apps and the data, is a sure-fire way to mess your system up when playing with customised ROMs! Anyway, @ashx: it's alright if you've backed-up "all user apps + system data", just hit the "Restore missing apps with data) only and NOT the "Restore missing apps + all system data"... next time, just hit the second button "Backup all user apps" only! :-)

Anyway, good luck and as ever, cheers and have fun... :-)

P/S... here's a couple of post-scripts that I wanted to add... Firstly, the 3G Galaxy Tab (the P1000 and its variants) does have a GPS module with A-GPS functionality... A-GPS is essentially Assisted-GPS which basically means that the devices that support AGPS functionalities are capable of using external data sources (such as your mobile data or wifi to augment its capabilities to triangulate/lock on to your location faster) As to the Galaxy Tab Wifi Only model (the P1010 and its variants) has different internals, with Phone Arena quoting that it has a GPS module while the US Page for the Tab Wifi, doesn't mention it at all. So, I'm not sure if it has it or not.

Secondly, have always wanted to thank Uncle Benny for his fine work in getting the Tab thread started and for maintaining it so well! Kudos on shepherding it to a V2 milestone! Cheers Uncle Benny!

Thanks for the info!

Regarding temp/perm root, i'm just wondering if say i temp root it and the steps would involved rebooting and such, since it would lose the temp root upon reboot. I guess i just wanted confirmation that should i perm root it or temp root is good enough just for the first step to flashing.

FYI, downloaded the bootloader check apk. It confirmed that i'm safe biggrin.gif its an intl/unbranded unit..pheww.

Well ... wish me luck!

Maybe this way can help you. Get a microsd instead + SDCARD adapter into your cam. After photo shoot, take out microsd and mount it in your tab.. walla biggrin.gif

Sorry again, if I want to go back to default factory/original ROM
what should I do? Where to get the original ROM?
*
So did you go custom rom? If you did with the guide, you'd know there's a procedure to "re-stock" biggrin.gif

Oops.. i think you meant going back to MY unit.. hmm.. you need to get the proper rom then.

Having fun with latest OC now biggrin.gif

I'm on latest OC, anyone have problem using terminal emulator? Can't seem to type in command. It only allows me to type in 1 char and when press enter no command is seen but it shows new line entered.

Typing outside works tho e.g sms/email etc.

Ran quadrant 5 times, each with differend numbers averaging 2k, highest 2246. That's normal? VC 1.4 limit with -100 till 800 mhz and below with -200.

One word - SUCKS. It is slow, lack of features. I'd suggest you look at Dolphin HD, XScope, Miren or Opera : these 4 browsers are way ahead of it. All free try out yourself

No problem on mine terminal. I am using Jack Palevich Terminal Emulator. My tab is now on Overcome 1.6.4
Why don't you delete terminal and reinstall it

In my opinion, quadrant scores is not a reflection of the phone real performance. Use it only to compare the phone performance when you change roms. Comparing it against other phones is not realistic
I'd say 2200+ is a good score. If you wish to compare my Atrix scores 2800, Incredible S 2250, Xperia Arc 2100

I always like to quote my previous Galaxy S recorded 2700 to 2800 but it loses out on practical terms GREATLY and MISERABLY against lower score phones - HD2 on Android, NexusOne, Dell Streak , these 3 phones averaging 1800 to 2100
*
Weird, i use the same. Before i was on OC, i could type no prob in terminal. I had to switch to swype mode to be able to key in comand now.

You can flash Overcome Froyo 1.6.4 Froyo

If you want to flash back to original stock rom - find the original firmware files at www.samfirmware.com . You should have kept a record of these before you flash OC 2.0 beta. If you didn't keep a record of these, go back to your seller and ask them.

However do note when you flash 2.0 beta - you have change the kernel version and  file system to EXT4. When you flash back the stock firmware files, the kernel remains the changed version
*
Erm... is that a typo? I rechecked xda, i thought RC1 only get ext4?

i also have a problem with installing kies version 2.0, but mine is once its downloaded it gives me an error message that it cant finish the installation. tried it couple of times even after i uninstalled my older kies.

by the way my suggestion is that you stick with you'r original kies u got with you'r phone. there isn't much of a difference and its working fine in terms of connection.

Added on May 20, 2011, 7:12 amjust an observation regarding charging the battery. once you charge the battery to 100% you better take it off other wise it's not effective to let it go on; the reason is i think once it reaches the 100% mark the battery stops charging and relies on the internal juice. different than other batteries i tried with my other phones.

i just left my tab charging over night 6 hours and already reached 100%. but then i unplug and plug it back and the battery is like 80% and start charging back and thats all when the phone is off.

by the way i already have calibrated my battery.
*
Weird, did not happen to me. I a lways charge till morning, unplug and shows 99%, off it, charge again till 100% off'ed. Boot up at 99%. With GB, i can now do my daily stuff wit enough juice left when i reach home. Which is about 7-8 pm. Awesome stuff.

BTW, Benny bro, I think I still need MarketAccess. smile.gif

After numerous wipes of Market data and cache, I still intermittently get issues like updates to my paid apps not appearing, e.g. latest incident being latest update to Voodoo Control Plus not appearing under 'My Apps' unless I run MarketAccess to emulate US SIM and then relaunching Market app to check.

As always, I will restore back to 50216 (digi) after I am done with the Market app. No big issue, quite used to running MarketAccess already by now. smile.gif

I have the same issue.

Definitely abnormal. Theoretically life should be better than 3G/Wifi as 3G data enabling consumes more power than wifi
3G/Wifi normal usage can last up to at least 8 to 10 hours, depending on how much internet access on 3G. Read page 1 FAQ on some links on battery life experiences
*
Agreed, even on 3G with average use. e.g. 3G always on, 3 email accounts on push, gtalk/msn, whatsapp/kakao on and ad-hoc browsing. I get minimal 10 hours use with about 15-20% batt left when i get home. 9-7 pm weekdays.

+1!

I've never needed to use my laptop as the hotspot itself, but i do use another phone to be the hotspot e.g. a symbian phone with Joiku as a backup.

But if i recall correctly, Overcome already has a modded WPA_supplicant to support adhoc wifi? Why need to replace?

Boohoo.. my bad. GB no overcome kernel yet. Stick to froyo for ad hoc. Reminds me to test my ad hoc again. *didn't delete in case others thought same like me..*

QUOTE(rashad @ May 29 2011, 10:45 AM)
Hi guys, after several days of searching the net to make my adhok network work i have stumbled on a couple of good websites to solve the issue:

Ps: this solution is for anyone having the latest rooted gingerbread 2.3.3 rom and wants to connect to his laptop internet connection:

(A). u need to get the wpa_supplicant that is working on gingerbread, i got one working and its from the beloved xda forums( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058319)

      1. Make sure ur tab wifi is turned off.
      2. Make a copy of the original wpa_supplicant in case things go
wrong. use root explorer and go to system/bin u will find the file
          there.
      3. Now unzip the file got from xda, and replace it with the original
          wpa_supplicant.
      4. turn on ur wifi and u should see any adhok network.

(B). Now this is the most important part inorder to get an internet connection working on ur tab u better download a small app for that instead of creating a manual adhok connection on ur pc. i learned this from this website thx to him ( http://pal-talks.blogspot.com/2011/04/miss...-laptop-to.html ).

The app is called connectify u can get it from this link ( http://www.connectify.me/thanks.html?v=2.2.0.18699#basic ).

                1. download app. go through the instructions there u can use
ur PC Lan network or wifi connection, i am using Lan
                    so i chose that.
2.Now u should be able to see the connection on ur Tab
and able to connect to internet.

I hope benny u can use this and add it to ur first posts in case anyone needs it. u can't believe how tough to get a complete tutorial to make this work.
*
I've been testing this supplicant and found wanting. It drops connection intermittently adhoc and normal wifi, for me anyway but it does detect ad-hoc and connected. Reverted back to original suplicant not drop for few hours already. While it should help in a pinch but i'm staying with the original.

Note:

BEWARE when using root explorer or at least app lock it. My niece was playing with my tab and God knows what she press, opened up explorer and almost deleted a system file well.. she was somewhere in root directory biggrin.gif, lucky i stoped her in time lol.
