Hey guys,

Has any of you worked in Bank Negara?

How's the salary? increment? bonus? future prospect? working environment?

I have a major in Economics and a minor in Finance. I have a feeling that most banks in Msia such as Standard Chartered, Citibank, PB, HSBC would prefer majors in Accounting and Finance.

I feel that Economics is inferior to Accounting and Finance. What do you guys think of this? (I'd appreciate if someone who has experience working in banks comments on this.. as you know better about working in a bank.)

Eco majors are more suitable for research divisions within banks, but in banking, any major is accepted (engineering, psychology etc) as long as the staff has he right attitude to learn on the job.

Most banks don't discriminate your major, altho for certain business units (corporate banking for example) being an accounting and finance grad. is more advantageous as you'll likely be able to read financial statements and compute ratios, understand what window dressing is etc already. Hence less training required for you to do the job.

From my experience (in BNM's case), their Point of View (POV) as a regulator effectively changes the type of work you do. Your role in BNM would like be geared toward policing other banks, studying/tracking macroeconomic factors (again, Eco grads are more suitable here) and drafting policies. It's rarely commercial/business driven, especially at lower level positions at BNM.

I would think that staff packages would be somewhat similar. Banks tend to reward competent staff so if you are a go-getter with a lot of heart and drive, plus technically competent, I recommend you try carving a career in the commercial side of banking.

If you are more academic, prefer a slower pace of life and don't mind the money side so much (as long as your are relatively comfortable) BNM would be a better choice. The number of training, seminars, BNM staff attends a year is astounding.

For commercial banks, making money is more important. Training is limited to furthering your abilities to make more money for the bank. Stress levels are also relatively higher.

Have you applied to Bank Negara?
It won't be easy...
So maybe you can try applying first?

And most companies no longer look at your major...
they just want a good degree...
sometimes they don't even see which uni it is from...

why is Econs inferior? to work in BN, it's more relevant to have Econs deg than a Acc & Finance actually. if not more relevant also, u have diff role to play what.

every deg has their own function.

hi, i am an ex bank-negara staff who resigned last month, basically it's a good stepping stones for econs and finance, i am a business grad, my job for BNM is to procure money and gold (physical!!) and not on currency exchange.
The have good structures in everything but one thing, they are abit orthodox in doing things, e.g memos, minutes and lots of paperworks.
Benefits i believe they are the first in the market, with flexi-benefits, bonuses up to 18 months mind you and loans, interest free!!!
Wages among the government bodies ranked third after SSM and first is LHDN.

Any more questions??

I believe starting pay is RM3500... lots of benefits like further study, bonus, etc etc. Not sure so much about the benefits at junior level, but BNM said starting pay is RM3500.

Mind you, it's hard to get in there. I went for the interview, they are looking for people who are really serious to join them.

You get lots of perks. I personally know 3-4 friends working there.

High EPF contributions.
Surprisingly awesome bonuses.
Quite a number of amenities.
Any vacation trips you take is subsidized by a fair bit. Flight tickets for vacation trips are also subsidized, including hotel/accomodation bills.
You can claim any books you buy, up to RM1000 I think.. IIRC.
Medical benefits.

There are many more but I can't be bothered to crack my head.

I've worked with Bank Negara Museum and Art Gallery as a Multimedia Developer before. The museum is located near Bank Negara. The museum is newly established and is just around 4 to 5 years old.

The working environment is fantastic and comfortable. I received a basic salary of RM2,900 per month excluding increments and bonuses.

I've been told that in the future, I can be promoted to senior level. If you're looking to work with some of the very professional and multi-racial employers, then Bank Negara Museum and Art Gallery is a perfect place for that.

I have a master's degree in Economics from NUS with more than three years of work experience in socio-economic research. But currently, I'm planning to settle down in Penang. Does anyone know of any vacancies available in BNM Penang branch? Highly appreciate your recommendations. Thanks.
