some of the issues can be fixed completely / partially.
- custom rom eliminates most lag. but cm7 doesn't lag.
- can refer first page to handle the GPS.
- can't do much about the screen, unless voodoo kernel can do something about it.
- for android market, as android popularity grows, developers will have to build apps for it or risks being left behind.

it doesn't matter if apple is the most valuable company and android has the most install base in the world. i buy a device that suit my needs.
I'm on cm7 with 560 contacts and 20 plus call log. no lag and jerkiness at all. unlike Samsung firmwares.
they can connect with USB. they need a special proprietary cable for that. i dislike itunes. it's too restrictive for me. it only allow one iPod to be synced to one computer at a time. when changing computer, it'll delete all songs inside the iPod. don't know if it is the same with iphone. i hear other problems with itunes but didn't experience them myself.

be aware that cm7 and miui still have outstanding issues

- battery life. my phone lasts the whole day if using battery Fu app. some people reported significant battery life with different modem. IMO I'd like the battery to be as good, if not,better than Samsung roms.
- 2g/3g switch. not working yet
- TV out and FM radio have low priority. FM radio might not be fixed as they do not have access to the source code.

if undervolt, definitely. how much you can undervolt without destabilizing depends from a phone to another. I notice a quick drain when i'm browsing on 2g
