Battery and auto shutdown, agreed. But lag and slow... not really, seems pretty zippy, standard 800Mhz performance.

The Android OS is always customized by the phone manufacturer. That's why the same Android 2.2 Froyo (for example) looks different on different phones. The UI and apps are different, for example Samsung has My Files, HTC has Flashlight, LG has LAYAR, SE has Timescape, etc. The launcher is also different, Motorola has MotoBLUR, Samsung has TouchWiz, and so on. In other countries, even the telcos customize the OS, putting in more bloatware, disabling tethering, etc. That's why AT&T only just recently released 2.1 Eclair for SE X10!

Settings > Wireless & networks >Wi-Fi settings > menu > Advanced > Use static IP

But static IP might not work well with your router DHCP, so it might be easier to just set the Google DNS on your router instead. As for 3G settings, there don't seem to be any way to update the DNS, but I'm sure if you look around, there would be some hack available.

That article is from more than a year ago, many points are obsolete. For example, we all now have live wallpapers, wifi tethering, App2SD, etc. without requiring root.

After I root, I normally will remove the stock apps I do not use (including the browser), remove the lousy ringtones, and add screenshot app.

That doesn't work in apps. The moment you press back, it either goes back or exits the app. Don't tell me all those screenshot apps in the market are for nothing?
