Hey guys, i'm thinking of purchasing a hifi setup for my living room. At the moment i would like to start off with a cd player and an amplifier as my budget is limited. Planning to pair it with my aego m for now till i have more budget for a new set of speakers. My budget is around 2k, am I right to go for the player and amplifier first? Any nice recommendations at this price range? Thanks.

Marantz 5004 or Cambridge Audio Topaz will fit your budget.

Hi All,

I just got myself a pair of Acoustic Energy Radiance 3.

The brief spec:

Power Handling: 200W peak programme

Impedance: 8 Ohms

Sensitivity: 90dB for 1 Watt at 1M

I'll play loseless music file through my HD media player. I would like to get an DAC and amplifier to match with it. Please recommend me which is better and where to try it.

My budget will be around RM3k. Preference will be 80/20 (music/movie).

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Hmmmm...I think this is a better place to ask. Didn't see it at first. tongue.gif

Ok here goes:
I am thinking of a decent sound system to put in the living room. It will be hooked up to a DVD player. It's for my parents, and the way I look at it, they don't need a surround system. So the budget can be concentrated on a decent stereo system. They also like to play soft music once in a while to brighten up the mood in the house if guests are around. biggrin.gif

So, in summary, a stereo system, good for music and good for movies. Doesn't have to have a woofer, wouldn't need one too. Budget?......I dunno how these things are priced, so I set it loosely at around RM1000 where they would probably be most comfortable. I'm only looking at speakers for now. I will personally look for other things like amps and CD players later.

8000A is the oldest 60W/channel integrated amplifier with phono. It was supeceded with the 8000S and doesn't have phono, designed for digital playback or other line level input. Up the ladder is the 8000C/8000P pre-power combo with 100W/channel. Highest up is 8000Q/8000P or 8000M combination. They also had 8000CD/8000CDT/8000DAC/8000DAX/8000T/8000PPA are individual CD, DAC,Tuner,Phono stage, all up to you to customize and build up. 8000A amp is about 20 years old now. Its a fuss free straight forward 60W amp that'll do its job.
I did have quite a lot of fun with Audiolab amplifiers, till I changed to a tube amp later on that is more musical and entertaining.

My friend told me that his mezzo 2 is not bright speaker, but cambridge isvknown for being bright. Perhaps some mezzo owner can advise but they are mostly at home entertainment side.

CA is bright indeed:) Mezzo is not that bright to start with. Just do not pair it with QED XT, Belden 1311A, and other bright sounding cable.

M31i is a warm speaker, my friend sya its warmer than his mezzo 2. The sound is similar to wharfedale diamond series. Because of this some might perceive it as less detailed especially those who use brighter sounding speaker. However its good for vocal song imho esp male vocal.

Htkaki sells them, he shud be able to elaborate more too.

You have a lot of better choice than mission for that budget. I also have 1 floorstand and 1 bookshelf for near and far listening. But sadly my new amp cant utilise 2 speaker and my marantz amp im planning to sell soon to fund for subwoofer. But i do swap from time to time when im bored lol
