Not quite accurate to compare the "domestic purchasing power" of Malaysia (as a whole) with Singapore. Simple fact is that there are a LOT of rural areas in Malaysia where a little income equals a lot of domestic purchasing power. In Singapore, a $1500 HDB is "primary accomodation", in Kuala Pilah, a RM300 terrace house is "primary accomodation". If you compare primary accomodation in Singapore vs an area within 25km circumference of KLCC, then you'd find that Singapore is a lot cheaper. I rent a flat for $1300 now and in comparison, I rented a terrace house in PJ for RM1500 7 years ago. To me, rent in Singapore is cheaper.

At the end of the day, all these measure really mean nothing individually.

You only need ask yourself are you happier in Sg and are you saving more?

My decision was a no brainer.

Stay in KL, I can buy a nice house in PJ and a little sports car but I would be burdened by the loans practically until I retire.

Come to Singapore and work for 10 years, I can go back to PJ, pay cash for that house and car, and then continue working with no loan commitments and total financial freedom.

House ok...car...make sure its insured ler...friend of mine lost his GTR in KL...locked and had guards watching it...paid rm 150k modify 150k and only got back 150k from the insurer...

i heard OCBC can get CC even u are not a PR or Singaporean with 30k income. regarding the medical check, normally company HR will give u a company letter to go to specific clinic to do those check. regarding debit card, i got no issue getting a DBS debit card with a S pass. annual income also less than 30k. and regarding the dependent pass, some people wants to bring their wife/children down together, so only e pass can apply a dependent pass for them. and the number of dependent pass you can apply depends on what type of e pass u are taking.

Do the companies pay for your medical examination?

QUOTE(bellion @ Apr 21 2011, 11:17 AM)
There's also the psychological factor for many urbanites in Malaysia to keep up with the Joneses i.e. they feel compelled or pressured to be saddled with loads of debt just to be able to afford a continental car or a nice link house in Bandar Utama while they are struggling with the real essentials e.g. paying for quality education and college fees for their children.

Malaysians working in Singapore typically aren't subject to such compulsion as they did not grow up in Singapore.

But there is also always a inherent risk of employment when u come to SG. It is very unlikely to get fired in Malaysia. However, it is a diffrerent ball game in SG. Ppl get hired and fired in a blink of an eye. No recourse. So yes u can save. But then again all yr savings gone when u get fired. Don't forget yr still a foreigner in SG and the gov couldn't give a *^%& about u and would only be happy to see you go back.
*
It really depends on how you see it.

I think this is not a bad thing, its actually good. You are forced to be the best you can be.

Some techie house owner allowed, those non techie one mostly not allowed. Because once u sign the contract, the line will be there for at least 1 years to 2 years. What if during these few years u run move to other places? And the new comer don't need internet?
*

I think it's easier to opt for Starhub using the cable tv lines... I assume all rooms that we are going to rent shall be provided with a TV line rather than a phone line.

I've been using starhub tv line and shifting is easy.. no need any owner's signature for approval for phone line installation.

Good idea!!

Sometimes I wonder how could a country that had the same footing yet richer could go so wrong.

Imagine if Malaysia had salaries like Singapore and people were proactive; Malaysia would be paradise!

[quote=seantang,Apr 23 2011, 05:13 PM]
Malaysians will be getting a much better deal. We're going to have some unknown, nearly bankrupt "IT" company owned by some Datuk Kroni get a RM50 million deal to "create" email accounts for all adult Malaysians, and thereafter charge the govt 50sen for every email they send on behalf of the govt. Imagine, a Hari Raya greeting from Jibby to all 16 million adult Malaysians via email means RM8 million in the pocket of Datuk Kroni for just pressing "send to all".

And you just know what this will lead to. At some point, some very 'smart' person will say that because we have 1Emel, we will need 1Komputer for all adult Malaysians resulting in a contract for 16 million overpriced laptops. Then some other very smart person will realise that most of these people don't have internet access. We'll need 1JalurLebar.

If they're going to do it, do it transparently. I know it wont happen.

The day things are transparent, pigs will fly.

The Lee and Lee Dynasty is also raking in big $$$ but at least Singaporeans are proud of their country and they can see improvements.

People know Singapore, whereas some people dont even know Malaysia exists.

I think getting money is fine but deliver results. No slap dash job.

Sometimes I really wonder why our country can go so wrong. I realize complaining is useless, I just choose to leave.

*Sigh*

what are the points when you guys looking at when considering for a job?

Location, salary, job scope? Which comes first?

and why does you all chose to work in Sg? Aside from the currency.
Bcz I might got an offer in Penang.
I am thinking whether I should opt to work in penang or Sg.
*
Penang is good to relax.
If u want to get real world experience, Singapore!

Both have their pros/cons.

I have lived in Canada, Japan, Taiwan, China and Thailand, Singapore is pretty okay.

Food wise Singapore is good...Penang food these days seem to have lost its shine. I dont see anything special about it any more.

My friend who got her Masters is in Penang and earned about rm 2500; that a real joke.

Then again it all depends all on you.

No pain no gain.

QUOTE(Find The Way @ May 10 2011, 10:34 PM)
Hi guys and gals, can someone shed some light on the cons/implications of owning private property in Singapore? Thanks.
*
Pros:
Yay! U got a house!
In other words youre telling women, youre ready for babies and getting married; you got your nest.
Your house value will go up.

Cons:

Capital tied down, so dont dream much about starting a business.

This is the origin of the word mortgage.

Mortgage: In the word mortgage, the mort- is from the Latin word mori (via old french mort) for death and -gage is from the sense of that word meaning a pledge to forfeit something of value if a debt is not repaid. So mortgage is literally a death pledge.
