RM800!  shocking.gif
Has version 6 got the revised planetology? If not, its money down the drain.......
*
I am not sure though. What about you check their website? I am interested in the plus version which can do serious astrophotography.

Currently, I am trying on Maxim DL to do CCD imaging. If you read my blog, I am going to get a CCD imager. I just find that the current LPI is not suitable for deep sky imaging.

QUOTE(blueye @ Sep 2 2006, 06:41 PM)
uh I'm kinda new to this astronomy thing but was wondering how much i have to spend to view those planet and star closer?

currently i only have minolta i5000x with 35-80mm lens... can only see the moon.  it have a bulb function so ... how do i start?

ps is there a not so expensive telescope say around RM300++?

Thanks
*
What's your budget? Planetary observing doesn't need any big scope as the DSO (Deep Sky Object) needs. So, a 3" or 4" is decent enough for this. Maybe you got to topup your budget for a telescope.

If you are not going to get a telescope, you can get an equatorial mount for tracking purpose (that's mean you will get the photo of stars in dot but not a line as the Earth rotates).

By using the telescope, you can either mount your camera on the scope or do prime focus. What's prime focus? When you mount your slr or dslr to the telescope, the telescope is now the lens of your camera, this is called prime focus.

What else do you want to know, please let me know. smile.gif

QUOTE(March05 @ Sep 3 2006, 12:31 PM)
RM300 is way too low for a true astronomical telescope, blueye. At the minimum, if you want to do basic visual observation (forget about astrophotography at this entry level) be prepared to spend RM1,500++ for one with at least a motor drive for sidereal tracking (to compensate for the earth's rotation).

Get something less than that, I guarantee you, you will lose interest in astronomy out of sheer frustration in no time.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to get a reasonable second hand telescope (except from a friend) because most people will only sell off a used telescope if it is an under performer.

I don't wish to discourage you, but you are only wasting your money if you invest in equipment at too low an entry point. Upgrading a telescope usually means buying a new one with larger aperture and sturdier mount  - you will be replacing almost all your initial investment.

Yup, he is right.

By the way, DSO is not a type of telescope. It's the short form of deep sky objects.

There are other ways to start astronomy as a hobby cheaply. Get a good pair of binoculars, join a club etc.

How about getting some friends together and share the costs? You can hold star parties the whole year round!

BTW, don't forget to shoot this Friday morning's Partial Lunar Eclipse! Can use almost any camera for this event.  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

When is the exact time for the partial lunar eclipse? Don't you think that we need a filter to protect the lens of the camera as it's not full eclipse?

QUOTE(March05 @ Sep 4 2006, 01:59 AM)
For Petaling Jaya, the moon should be entering the penumbra at ~12:46 am on 8th September, and the first contact with the umbra at 2:12 am.
Peak is somewhere about 2:56 am, then it's out of the umbra at 3:30am and the eclipse is over at 4:57 am. Shouldn't be much different for Kluang. (Disclaimer: the mentioned times maybe off by a few minutes, too lazy to confirm)

Maybe you can use a neutral density filter, but easier to just reduce the aperture or exposure time.

Let's try to do a sequence from start to finish, like what wKkaY did during the last eclipse in Australia.....
*
I thought the time for the eclipse is 6.05-7.38AM 8 Sept. ? Is our time GMT+9 or GMT+8? I think the stupid Mahaxxxx changed our time zone. Such a non scientific decision.

Yup, mine is a 9*63 and it's quite heavy. I seldom use them lately as I prefer to use my telescope. laugh.gif

how much is ur uh.. pair telescope (aka binocular 9*62) cost?

does the RM200-300 binos good to see clear? where do everybody get their stargazing gear?
*
My 9*63 is RM420. laugh.gif Interested to know my telescope price? laugh.gif

I would say that 7*50 is very good as it's light and quite okay in sight viewing. I get mine from the South East Asia Meade distributor aka Uncle Looi in Petaling Jaya. smile.gif

I am so glad that this thread is active again. rclxms.gif March05, I thought our time is adjusted due to Sabah and Sarawak?

Haha, I expected the rain to clear the sky. However, I misforecast. biggrin.gif I am going to start my observation from 02:15 to 03:15, how do you think about this?

March05, are you interested to co-operate with me? I am thinking to take a photo every 5 minutes and then combine them into an animation, are you interested to join me? If you are, please take a photo from 12:40 and then every 5 minutes. I will only start mine at 2.15AM. smile.gif

ZzzZzZzz, looks like it's time to get a new alarm clock. I woke up at 3:31. doh.gif

However, I did take 6 photos until 4:00. The eclipse was not very very obvious at that time. How many photos did you guy take?

March05, have you done uploaded the full resolution photos to photobucket or can you send me your full resolution photos? I am quite sure that the midst here is greater than yours there. I posted one in my blog. I am going to configure their brightness and contrast this evening.

Last but not least, Streamyx sucks.

Saw it this morning with the naked eyes from my living room on the 26th floor. No chance in taking pics as Butterworth was very cloudy.

That's too bad. I think you can still take the photo as the Moon was such a bright object.

Deepyu, we thought you are missing. laugh.gif

nice pic everyone biggrin.gif by the way is there any way to shot photo using binocular when i get one? ... MrLKM... do u want to sell me ur seldom use binos? ha ha biggrin.gif

uh then i can help take some photo  laugh.gif
*
I am not sure whether we can use bino to take photos. If I am going to sell it, the price will be around a new one. sweat.gif

Too dangerous. I was stretching out my body from the living room through the windows to get a glimpse of the moon. I could have slipped and fell 26 floors to my death.  shocking.gif
*
Woots... Luckily you didn't do that.

blueye, my Meade 9*63 is really a good binocular. However, I don't think I am going to sell it as I might lend my astronomy club until I "graduates" from my Chong Hwa High School.

I've reworked the orientation of the frames to approximate the path of the moon moving across the Earth's shadow.  sweat.gif
user posted image

BTW,the moon moves right to left......

Mr.LKM, the original full resolution shots are rather large for me to upload - over 260Mbs (~90 frames) and frankly, quite crabby before correcting for color, and contrast - no thanks to the haze.  vmad.gif
*
I am too lazy to do that animation now. laugh.gif May I be granted the use of both of the lunar sequence images?

How did the Earth shadown move on Moon? I thought it's just like we saw it?

Oh... this one. I just forgot about it. Why not you submit your photo to spaceweather.com? You own them!

blueye, buy one! laugh.gif
