.:INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW:.

Hello and welcome to This is a Lamp’s first review! Although I joined Lowyat recently, I’m quite active on Notebookreview.com. Anyway, enough of the introductions.

Today, we are looking at the Sager NP8150 or the Clevo P150HM. Clevo is a Taiwanese company, acting as suppliers in the background for many of the consumer laptop brands today. However, it is also safe to say that Clevo pride themselves in making robust solutions for laptops; powerhouse in gaming, cooling and performance. While I know many Malaysians do prefer the looks of other fancy gaming laptops, e.g. Alienware and Asus, Sager/Clevo offers the business limousine rather than a crowd pleasing F1 car. Many do not know Sager/Clevo. And I’m quite saddened sometimes about this. They are lacking in marketing strategies, but sometimes appear in magazines. However, those who have owned or know about this brand, they’re one of the best high performance custom solutions on the market, with the best cooling systems in a laptop. You may argue that Alienware has the best cooling, but you haven’t seen what Sagers can do.

With this, I am based in Australia. So I am poised to deal with an Australian Clevo Reseller, namely Logical Blue One. They are very friendly, prompt in answering questions. They also update me with my order when necessary. And best of all, they reply in weekends and on Facebook! Now, who would go out of their way in the weekends to reply to work related email?
(Logical Blue One)

I have dealt with XoticPC and LPC Digital (USA Sager Resellers) in the past, with XoticPC processing my older 1st generation, Sager NP8690 with GTX 280m. They are top notch, well organised and not robots. LPC Digital gave me a good price for the NP8150, but I turned it down due to the Intel recalls that affect my current whereabouts and travels. Had a very quick refund process, with the sales representative even emailing me during his visit to the bank! I am deeply sorry for not dealing with a Malaysian/Singapore Reseller, as I am away from Malaysia.
(XoticPC & LPC-Digital )

The resellers are an important factor in choosing a Sager/Clevo laptop; they play a huge part in your purchase and warranty issues and most importantly, your first impression. As other consumer brands are answering machines and less technical when it comes to support, the Sager/Clevo resellers are people, and offer quick, adaptive technical knowledge to their customers, be it with jargon (technical words) or not. Most of these resellers are forum representatives in Notebookreview.com, and you can specifically ask them about questions and cheaper quotes. Even here in Lowyat, Mucro SG, a Singaporean reseller, has a forum rep lurking and answering questions. But do not order directly from Sager, because they are quite horrible with patrons and just about as bad as the answering machine brands.

Then comes the laptops themselves. They can come with no OS, saving you a lot. Not only that, since they are barebones directly from Clevo, the individual chassis can be modified. If you don’t want a webcam, take it off! If you don’t want your fingerprint reader, say no! Sager/Clevo does not ship their laptops with bloatware, spyware, random programs. They treat their laptops as BRAND new, not used.

Since the chassis is manufactured by them, you are free to ask specific options for your Clevo. Even down to the brand of RAM or HDD you are using, without the need to cancel your current order. Just ask, they will change.

Without further ado, the Sager/Clevo Horize NP8150 (P150HM).

.:SPECIFICATIONS:.

So, what is inside this thing anyway? Many of you will wonder this.
The NP8150 (I shall refer it to this now), is equipped with Intel’s new line of processors, the delayed SandyBridge processors up to the 2920XM. Not only that, the motherboard supports 16GB DDR3 1333 RAMs (max), and also the elusive DDR3 1600 RAMs. These DDR3 1600Mhz are confirmed to be only on two out of the four SO-DIMMS slots, noted on the just released service manual. Although it comes with one drive bay, you can take the DVD drive out to make way for a secondary hard drive. And to top it all off, it has the fastest GPU currently on the mobile market; the NVIDIA GTX 485m, the main star of today. Yes, Clevo outsmarts its competitors.

But will it perform well? And can it cool it well? Will this laptop able to surpass the need for gamers/enthusiasts?

Anyway, here are the specs of my laptop:
- 15.6” 1920x1080 FHD+ Matte, 95% Colour Gamut.
- Dimensions: 376mm (w) * 256mm (d) * 35 - 43mm (h)
- Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM 2.2Ghz Quad Core Processor (Sandy Bridge)
- 8GB DDR3 1333 MHz. (4GB to be added later)
- Crucial C300 64GB (Firmware rev 0007) + 750GB 7200RPM Seagate Momentus + A-DATA 32GB SDHC Card Class 10
- NVIDIA GTX 485m 2GB GDDR5 w/ DX11 support (Drivers Forceware 270.28)
- Intel Centrino Wireless-N Advanced 6230 with Bluetooth.
- 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, E-SATA, HDMI out, DVI out, Firewire, 3in1 card reader slots.
- THX TruStudio Pro Surround Sound & 3W Subwoofer.
- 8 Cell Battery 76.96Wh (capable of 2 – 4 hours life) with 180W, 19V 9.47A Power adaptor.
- Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Well, I couldn’t get hold of DDR3 1600 RAMs because it’s barely out yet! At least for laptops. My reseller has options for those, but it was quite expensive…

The laptop costs $2125.95 (RM6463.64) with upgrades from Glossy to Matte, Intel 6230 Wireless and 8GB RAM. I opted for no OS, default warranty and no HDD. The SSD, HDD and 4GB RAM are parts I already have prior to purchase. Logical Blue One’s NP8150 comes straight with the 2720QM and the GTX 485m, unlike other resellers with choices from 2630QM and the GTX 460m. In preparation for my laptop, I spent maybe ~RM1,500 for new parts and accessories, haha.

BIOS, Drivers and Firmware updates are plenty from Clevo and are not tied to one manufacturer (e.g. Sony’s Drivers); the NP8150 is new so won’t have these so soon. In the future though, this laptop would have support for AMD ATi 6970m and possibly the GTX 580m. Currently it supports GTX 460m and GTX 485m. I have throttling issues with the laptop, but this is due to the fact that I'm using a secondary monitor. The laptop isn't audible when not connected to a secondary monitor.

UPDATE: As of this moment, the laptop is running 1.01.11 BIOS and 1.00.11 Firmware/EC, and the Corsair Force F60 replaced with a Crucial C300 64GB SSD. This is due to the Corsair's incompatibility with these laptops...unfortunately (failure to be detected on POST/Boot).

As you may have known, Intel had recalls of their SandyBridge processors. This laptop was wayyyy overdue, since December/January. And finally, it is here.

.:PACKAGING:.

The packaging came with a solid brown cardboard box strapped with another cardboard box that contains the free carry case. These are taped with black tape with the words “Horize” written which is the name given to the laptop models sold at Logical Blue One. Strong tape it is. Easy to cut.

Inside, we have the laptop in Styrofoam, power adapter in Styrofoam and driver CDs/manuals. Nothing special, except the inclusion of a small bag labelled ”HDD Screws” but contains 3 chocolate eggs…how nice! Tastes good too!

.:VISUAL & BUILD:.

So, while you may think right now it is very plain looking, squarish, not fancy; it’s actually built pretty sturdy. The surface is of a rubberised greyish finish, non-standard in today’s laptops. This however, contributes to the collection of dust that lingers around. Although easily wiped off, it might be a bit of a pain doing so every time. On the contrary though, the rubberised finish is quite capable of withstanding decent amount of punishment. The aura it emits doesn’t suggest that it is fragile and weak, more so that it is very sleek. But please, do not ask me to bash my laptop into a wall or something haha.

So here we have my very overused, full of fingerprints, ASUS EEE PC 1018P, 10" Netbook in comparison with the NP8150. The NP8150 has no signs of any Sager or Clevo logo. From this, you can tell that your reseller is a Clevo reseller, not a Sager rebrander. Top view:

The adapter is HUGE. I said it a couple of times in forums; this thing can kill someone if you throw it at his/her face.

Island styled or Chiclet styled keyboards are making their way to the market. Clevo on the other hand, already had their keyboards to be chiclet.

The keyboard has basic Clevo FN functions available in most Clevos (e.g disable touchpad, bluetooth/wireless, brightness). But I’m pretty sure not many of you have own one. One thing to note though that if you press FN+1, the fans will spin at MAX speed.

The keyboard also indicates the WSAD keys with red indicators. Hmm, fancy. Clevo machines come with a 3x3 Numpad system on the right side. It might take a while to get used to for some of you. The spacing for each key is quite large as well. There is little or no flex, unless you intentionally apply force on the keys. Sorry I forgot to take out the sticker on the speakers and palm rests during photo shots.

user posted image

The problem with this setup is that some of the more important buttons i.e. home, page up, page down, are tied to the Numpad themselves and may cause some frustration among users. I personally have already gotten used to this setup and have compensated those keys with my mouse’s macro buttons.

The NP8150 does NOT have backlit keyboard. Ever. While many think that this is debatable, I do not think it’s necessary to have that feature. Personal preference. But it’s nice to type something in the dark during long night hours. And maybe in the future, Clevo may falter from constant persistence of user feedback, and include backlit keys.

Typing can be noisy sometimes, with tapping sounds emitting. But if you’re playing games, distracted, watching movies or playing music, the tapping doesn’t bother much. Probably in a silent environment, it may be of an annoyance to some people.

The touchpad. I think it’s Clevo’s “room for improvement” area. I had the Sager NP8690 before, and the touchpad was horrendous! And sadly, the NP8150 has a similar feel to that terrible movement of the touchpad. It somewhat feels better than the older models though; the rubberized finish extends to the touchpad. But as it stands, I am using the mouse most, if not all the time. So this isn’t so bad. Subjective views though.

user posted image

As mentioned in the specifications, the NP8150 comes with 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, E-SATA, HDMI, DVI connectors. No Express card slots.

The beauty about a Sager is that most components are customisable; the CPU, the RAM, HDDs, Optical Drives, GPUs, Wireless cards, LCDs. All of these are within reach of your hands and screwdriver, well, maybe not the LCD. These do not void your warranty if you choose to change components! The upgradability is somewhat similar to the Alienware mobile solutions. But did you know Clevo was also the supplier for Alienware laptops?

I am a sucker for modding, on a small scale at least. You will see later that I have extra heatsinks on the default one below. This may help in decreasing the temps later on in this review, but probably a non-factor. My older NP8690 also had some modding on it before being sold. Also, I have the urge to wire up some lighting on the laptop’s inside…but failed to do so due to the size of the inverter I have, and the minimal headroom in the laptop.

user posted image

Well, inside, you can see that it’s just easy to open (4 screws to pop open the back panel), and the components are laid out in an art form. It’s not messy, the fans are rightly positioned, the harddisk is accessible and there’s no need to play doctor with this laptop because it’s very very user friendly. GPU is on the left with a copper heatsink and fins, CPU is on the right with a copper heatsink and aluminium fins, RAM modules in the middle, HDD is on the mid- bottom.

user posted image

Ventilations and fans are placed at the back of the laptop, not in the front or sides. This is typical of Clevo design and aids in keeping your palms cool and not heating your fingers and hands. If you ever want to get a laptop cooler, get one that fits by the fan intakes (like the Cryo LX). The more likely candidate that will warm your palms would be the optical drive bay which is on your right palm when typing. A 750GB 7200RPM Seagate Momentus sits in this palm area, and so far, it isn't warm at all. Very nice.

Here's a comparison between the NP8150's DVD Drive and the wrong ODD bay I bought. If you ever need to buy a second optical bay, check the connectors first; it has to be SATA to SATA. Make sure that it is the same as the top half. Don't be stupid like me, who got overexcited and just bought a random ODD bay. sweat.gif

user posted image

It is 6.83lbs or 3.1kg with batteries and optical bay; not really on the standard scale of weightings on your everyday laptop. But that’s understandable, considering the attention to cooling the system down. I’m pretty sure other desktop replacement laptops are heavier than this…my NP8690 was even heavier, and don’t even come to the Alienware M15x/M17x…it’s a bus! And yes I had an Alienware FYI, before you jump out and attack me with pitchforks and glassware.

.:LCD SCREEN:.

For those who are interested, the type of screen I have is an AUO Optronics B156HW01.v4 Matte Screen, with a 95% Colour Gamut. This screen isn’t the default one for the NP8150; I actually had it upgraded from the FHD Glossy B156HW01.v0 with a 60% Colour Gamut. If you order the default configuration, the NP8150 comes with the FHD Glossy screen.

About the B156HW01.v4.
This screen. Is. Just. Absolutely. Gorgeous! I begin to like Matte, coming from Glossy laptops. Fingerprints are scarce on the LCD, and the colours are bright and crisp, especially for a matte. Outside use is very good and seemed like no light is going to get through the laptop. No dead pixels are seen.

Glossy plastic surrounds the LCD and also the webcam. This can get smudgy and dirty quite easily in comparison to the rubberized finish which covers most of the laptop.

The movie "9" Blue-Ray 1080p. He is sad because he knows that I bought the wrong ODD bay...:

Viewing angles are good. In a small room with four people watching a movie, 4 out of 4 people are able to see the screen. Increasing that number, still manages to allow users to see until people start to block your view. The "down" angle is pretty extreme though; obviously at that angle most LCDs tend to wash out.

.:GAMES & BENCHMARKS:.

We have come to the section where this laptop will shine to the ends of galaxies. This laptop was made to serve one purpose; to give gamers and users alike, a run for their money and hours of mouth gasps and jaw drop moments. Since this is a new laptop, I am still in the process of getting games and programs installed on the system. However, I am a very hardcore gamer just for the info. I probably tried and played too many games, both online and offline. If you come up with a name of a game, be it console (except Xbox) or PC, I probably most likely have heard it and/or tried it.

3DMark scores, that I took. Only basic editions though. I compared with some desktops right now, this thing just pushes it aside like a toy.

Starcraft II, with FRAPS:

Starcraft II is quite demanding if cranked up to its higher settings. The NP8150 runs SCII on extreme without any difficulty and sits at 40-60FPS. Average was 50FPS. 1v1 AI game.

NBA 2K11, performance benchmark:

75FPS noted on the screenshot. Ran very smooth, transitions are smooth, and minimal to no lag.

Devil May Cry 4 Benchmark, DirectX 10:

Devil May Cry 4 ran blistering hot! Not laptop hot, but I was getting hot watching the amazing visuals! 1920x1080 resolution, max textures and full AA. There was a slight dip in the graph where I had to alt-tab to get Fraps to run.

Final Fantasy XIV Online Official Benchmark:
user posted image

Very playable. Lowest FPS was 37. Settings were on High res option.

Lost Planet 2, Benchmark Test B, DirectX 11:
user posted image

This game has amazing visuals and gameplay which blew me off the seat. DirectX 11 is the new thing on the block and it is my first time stepping into the DX11 world. LP2 ran at an average of 20-30FPS, quite playable. This is with full settings on, with max AA.

Crysis 2, Extreme settings:
user posted image

The most gorgeous game yet. Settings are limited from High, Very High and Extreme; pre-patch was Advanced, Gamer, Hardcore. The game runs on Extreme settings at 30-50FPS. Very very well. Amazing game. Had hours of multiplayer enjoyment for the first few days after install...but snipers are quite annoying lately.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution:

Full settings, no lag, even during FRAPS. A very superb game, very fun !

Other benchmarks done:
Pro Evolution Soccer - Full settings. FPS cap was 60, therefore the game ran 55 - 60 FPS with no lag at all.

Speakers are located horizontally on the top of the keyboard, right below the LCD. It looks very nice in fact. So, it is befitting that I put some sound benchmark videos for you users to see how the 2.1 system sounds like. I never had a laptop with a 2.1 Sound system built in, so here’s a good idea of it. If you can, watch in 1080p thanks. Video compromises of a song and an anime playback.

It actually sounds great and better than most consumer laptops right now, with the exception of those JBL speakers on Dell laptops and Toshiba’s Altec Lansings. The THX TruStudio included is a simple program that allows users to add effects such as crystallizer, surround etc.

Australia. Hot and just hot. It can get cold though. The figures may differ from where I am.
The temperature and ambient difference might be quite apparent in a hot humid country like Malaysia. However I will try my best to give you an estimate of the temps. I have a modded Cryo LX below the NP8150, but I have switched this off for the duration of the benchmarks and temperatures.

Ambient temps are 20 – 21C, air conditioned room. The laptop was running for a few hours, with mix activities done. Anime watching, surfing, sound tests, 3Dmark benchmarks, some games.

user posted image

Give or take 1 – 2 degrees off from my extra heat sinks, and there you go. Smooth sailing even on load. The GTX 485m didn't even break a sweat, more so the i7-2720QM as well. At idle, the GTX 485m was 38C, which is really impressive coming from a high TDP performance GPU. The CPU's current state during the time of photo capture were kinda in the mid 60s because I was playing music and doing other things in the background haha.

I noticed something on the voltages on the GTX 485m though; it somewhat decreased from 1V to 0.85V. Maybe it suggests that it undervolts itself when idle. Pretty good feature I think, saves your electric bills and less heat.

.:SUMMARY:.

Well, this. The Sager NP8150 just blew my mind away. Clevo did it again. The NP8690 (the predecessor) was already a great product, and the Sager NP8150 just took it further. I do not know if it appeals to many of you, because the warranty is an issue in Malaysia, and the looks aren’t what many of you prefer (yeah of course they want a Ferrari as oppose to a Rolls Royce).

”OMG MAN LOOK LIKE BOX ! DUN WAN!”

It does not fancy backlit keys; it does not have coloured coded interfaces and fancy touch screen media players.
But I can tell you this. This machine has bragging rights. An entitlement of NVIDIA’s GTX 485m in a 15.6” form factor that will not grab attention seekers alike. It runs very cool for a high end card, and that's thanks to Clevo's superb cooling. The 2.1 speakers already sound great, coupled with the ease of upgradability.

Now, any games now that you throw at it, it will simply chomp it down and say:

“Yo momma ate better than that!”

And you will have that privilege of saying so, if you own one yourself. Brag it to your mom or your spouse or even your dog (if he barks then he likes it, if he doesn't he's just jealous).

Aside from minor issues like possible dust collection, glossy, smudgy plastic area around the LCD and mediocre touchpad, this definitely was catered and categorised as a high performance gaming solution laptop. This, in a long run, will keep you company (it will for me for the next 4 – 5 years). And lose a girlfriend/boyfriend at the same time. smile.gif

If there are any questions (like ”Do you do charities” or “Where is your house?”) or things you want me to add, feel free to reply to this thread or PM me. There will be changes soon, so stay tuned to the next episode...

I know three others. I found Logical Blue One to be the most friendliest one and have similarities with Sager/Clevo USA reseller customer services.

Bro, ur signature 5000GB HDD is true or typing error?
shocking.gif

Btw, This Is A Lamp, after reading ur review, suddenly felt that my review is useless and pointless. TT
For me, the significant standout is ur battery, it looks so big from other 8-9 cell batteries!
Nah, the keyboard will be the advantage in my POV, since I realise now typing for a long period makes my left hand middle and forth finger pain. I think ur keyboard won't have this problem since it is island type(is it called right? hmm.gif)
Congratz on ur purchase and enjoy for now!

Actually, it's not so bad!

The area near the LCD and speakers is the potential area for dust to collect, and your fingerprints smear across the glossy plastic. But that's the only area that I see right now is affected.

The aluminum finish of the NP8170 should be cool I think.

Yeah, it's called island keyboard or chiclet keyboard. It's nice to type though, so far I haven't seen any dirty points from typing.

Will add more stuff to the review later:

- Noise levels / Fan speeds
- Webcam functionality
- Actual battery hours
- Changed topic title to Clevo Horize (upon request from Logical Blue One themselves biggrin.gif ; they actually read the review!) !
- Other games (examples: Crysis, Battlefield Bad Company 2, COD: Black Ops, Dragon Age I & II, Shogun 2 Total War etc.)
- Other things I forgot blush.gif

It's so freaking easy to fix this laptop. 38C idle for a 485GTX is INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU RIGGING YOUR SCREENSHOTS? tongue.gif

Just asking, is there anywhere that you can buy spare parts, like heat sink and so on?

personally i believe any laptop will run fine for 3yrs at least... provided u take good care and there's no freak events like GeForce 8M or 6 series chipset...

i can foresee my current 23mths old laptop will serve me for at least 1 more yr, both in terms of performance and reliability, even though the hardware is outdated and i tortured it pretty badly in the past...

Well, i mean at least a Clevo have a low likelihood of having some silly issues like the thermal paste died off after 3 months or some heat issues.

I dont expect it to be 100% flawless, but at least it play games pretty well.

Usually spare parts can come from your reseller.

There are other shops that specifically sell these things like:

http://mxm-upgrade.com/ - for GPU heatsinks and GPU cards.

http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php - A USA Clevo reseller, sells pretty much many modules to be fitted in Clevo models.

Generally a Clevo would have a lower rate of failure than other laptops. It's still an electronic item though and like any other electronic things, there is a chance during manufacture that there is defects and/or failures. But I don't doubt Clevo's build design and quality though. Defects usually go through your reseller (their job to provide quality and assurance).

Hey...

Whats the battery life on this when Wifi is on, Brightness at medium and with some MS office running.??

I just placed my Order for the NP5160.

However i am having second thoughts on this as the GT 540M is far too weak to handle anything at FHD.

I can cancel it before it gets built ( in 1 or 2 weeks )

Really eager to change to at least the NP8130 but apparently the GTX285 Saves more power on idle.

Reportedly it can go 3 hours, the NP8150 that is.

I have yet to try it though, but so far it can go up to 2 hours on balance option.

Thats what i think as i went into NBR section for Sager laptops, there are barely any complains on the laptop itself.

Just a couple more question:
1) Does your old Clevo platform laptop had any issues when you were using it?
2) Do you know any good sites to sell second hand laptop? Since you manage to sell your old Clevo.
3) This is just a request, could you run a Furmark Test on your 485GTX? It is optional for you, as it isnt a very good thing to do on your GPU for the long run. Just the normal one will, no Extreme Burn or anything fancy.

Thanks,mate. Appreciate that.

My old Clevo was a W680CU, with the GTX 280m, before USB3.0 was implemented. It was an amazing machine for its time. I had never had any problems with it. I clean it daily as well, and take care of it well. It had more headroom in the compartment, the glossy LCD was great and a lot of games I play ran very well and smooth.

I sold my laptop here in Lowyat at the Garage Sale. Plenty of people wanting to buy a Sager/Clevo.

And yeah sure, I'll get a Furmark up later tonight or something.

It's a bit hard for me to sell mine at low yat, though.

I try to sell to my friend who is interested in my G73. If he is taking my G73 for 1.5k AUD, i might just let go of it and get a Clevo.

I really hope Clevo will be gawd damn solid like a desktop.

Hope you are fine with furmark test, though. It isnt a good thing to do in the long run.

*
Well, I ran Furmark with the "Benchmark 1080p" option. I will add this to the review.

I don't know what you're looking for in the benchmark though, except for the fact that my GPU went up to 90C!!! cry.gif

This is probably the most dedicated laptop review thread I've seen in a while, nice read!

If I were to get a gaming laptop in the future, will definitely consider Sager's for it's affordable prices instead of dumping money into the likes of Alienware.

Nevertheless I think they should improve the aesthetics of their laptops laugh.gif

Tried Bad Company 2 the other day with full settings, and nothing was lagging at all. Just got Shogun 2 as well, and will try that later. Lord of the Rings Online, Mass Effect 2, Civilization 5, Black Ops, Dawn of War II Retribution, and Dragon Age 2 are up later tonight.

750GB HDD works wonders biggrin.gif

Overclocking results will be up later tonight too.

smile.gif Busy busy!

Will get Crysis 2 sometime later this week. Currently busy with my cosplay costume haha tongue.gif

Okay guys, update.

Big problem came by with the laptop (don't think it's the laptop's fault).

Apparently my Corsair SSD wasn't detected on the BIOS and just sits there on POST since yesterday. So, I emailed my reseller regarding the problem. They replied that Corsair drives have detection problems on the NP8150/P150HM laptops due to their short SATA connectors hence not detected properly...

Weird huh. I will try to compensate that with my Seagate Momentus XT for now...there goes my free time in weekends.

So if you're ever going to buy this laptop, don't get a Corsair drive for it.

And so far, thanks for reading my review smile.gif. Benchmarks are to a halt until I sort the drives out.

*
I had the detection problem with my Vertex 2 initially.
What i did was, change the
1) AHCI to IDE -> Save changes & exit
2) The Vertex was detected in bios
3) Change back to ACHI, save and exit and the problem solved.

I hope you could solve the issue. Good luck.

Updated BIOS to 1.01.06, and so far so good.

Still using the Momentus XT as primary drive and no problems found.
Later tonight will upload a gameplay video of Crysis 2, and benchmark for Dawn of War II Retribution.

QUOTE(rubrubrub @ Apr 5 2011, 02:39 AM)
what is the battery life like? and where did u download those games? =)
*
Battery life was about 2-3 hours, mid brightness power saver.

Was 2:30~ with balanced and mid brightness.

And download? Nahhh...I buy my games for online play haha (Love online smile.gif ). Some of them are from Steam, and some games I have already gotten them before I had my laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I will try that tonight...although I filed an RMA for my Corsair. Reason why this RMA was done because I actually installed the Corsair drive into my netbook, but the BIOS did not detect it either. So I ruled out that the drive was inoperable, unfortunately.

Hopefully your suggestion will help sort the problem out; I still have my save games in that SSD ! sad.gif A Crucial C300 SSD is incoming to my doorstep in a week or so, and has been proven by my resellers that it works marvelously.

Sorry to disappoint you but the laptop got 2.8k points...4 - 5k points are still within the desktop range to be honest.

But it was still very playable throughout and I believe it can reach 3k if pushed a bit further.

The keyboard has basic Clevo FN functions available in most Clevos (e.g disable touchpad, bluetooth/wireless, brightness). But I’m pretty sure not many of you have own one. One thing to note though that if you press FN+1, the fans will spin at MAX speed.
Hi there,

Great review,

I recently bought the P150HM from LBO as well and noticed that my graphics fan tend to cycle on and off. So every 10-20 seconds the fan will kick in for 5-10seconds then go off again.

A few other people have reported the same issue here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clev...ile-idling.html

I was just wondering if you have the same issue with your notebook? Is there a fix for this?

Have you tried flashing to the latest Firmware and BIOS? Some NBR users have fixed the issue by doing so.

My fans normally turn on but doesn't really have a cycle; this is because I'm using a secondary monitor as well, so the fans are always spinning at a constant rate.

Yeah I have actually 1.00.06 / ec 1.00.04 but I still have the problem so I was just wondering maybe if you can test it by not plugging into a secondary monitor. I did read on NBR that people say the issue is fixed but I seem to have this issue

Thanks again

I do not have this issue after disconnecting my secondary monitor.

What NVIDIA driver version have you got currently?

yii... why cannot create character, until now FFXIV is till FOC because there are many areas need improvement and SquareEnix has no face to charge player until further notice.

About 3000 points ah, have to play in low resolution mode then. My desktop doing 6400 points and yet not able to max the framerate (60) at some places, some graphic options still need to be off.

60 is good enough, vsync if off may have screen tearing.
FFXI max at 30 also ok. more than 60 cannot notice one

Added on April 24, 2011, 3:36 pmStill not yet decided on this laptop. No expresscard, no built in WWAN, lauya keyboard...

The 4 screws to open bottom case, are they spring attached to the case type or normal loose screw? Need to open 4 really troublesome ler.

It's actually on my sig, the picture that is. The stock fans don't have a high RPM, while the ones I modded in are desktop 120mm fans, which goes even faster. It does help very much in fact, due to the higher RPM and cycle.

I don't really think the keyboard is bad though. And 4 screws to open a laptop is MUCH MUCH better than many of the current laptop brands today. Try opening a HP laptop or a Toshiba laptop; you will have trouble getting to ALL the components in less than 5 minutes. The NP8150 opens up quick, and easy. I don't know what you mean by "troublesome".

They are of the normal loose screw, Philip head type. Two in the middle, two on corners.

the keyboard i say lauya is not because of the quality, but the layout (numpad), pg up pg down, del button.... and no backlit led ><; i like to steal steal do thing at dark.

About the screw, I am using Dell laptop, 1 screw to open the bottom case to work with ram, cpu, heatsink, fan, cards bla bla. the screw is attached to the case so it will not go missing. Whenever i play game i will open up bottom case to allow better air flow that is why i ask~

While i am taking too long time to consider buying, Z68 will come out next week, donno what clevo will do next... waiting like this forever no need buy liao.

clevo is targeting for a very simple user who doesn't care much about the design and blink-blink function.

if you want backlit leyboard, pick alienware.

Mind to let us know which Dell laptop model you are using?
As far as I know, Dell Alienware M15X is the easiest one to get off the bottom panel by removing 2 screws. In your case, 1 screw..., I'm pretty curious to know. Mind to share? smile.gif

err, it is M4400 Precision, business laptop, not for gaming (although i chose the best graphic card still lousy)

I need a laptop that is presentable in business meeting yet powerful in gaming. Clevo plain design really suitable for me. Only down side is no docking station, expresscard and WWAN.

USB dock station i think has own graphic chip and unable to use the laptop graphic card power. expresscard can be overcome by usb 3.0 device although not very good. WWAN... is a problem it is not nice to plug in a big USB 3G modem in business meeting it is too obvious this fellow is browsing internet; could still be overcome by handphone internet sharing via bluetooth.

Hmmm...removing the back cover while gaming...don't get into the habit of that if you have a Clevo, because by itself, it runs pretty cool anyway and you're subjected to attract objects into the fan intakes as well as a pretty serious case of burns if you touch the two heatsinks.

And forgot to answer your FF online character question. I couldn't make a character because Squareenix screwed my payment system up, so I just gave up.

Hmm, Dell M4600 coming out, fulfill all my requirements except for poor graphic card zzz (slower than 460m). Price would be the same as highest spec NP8150. grrr hard to choose.

and regarding windows installation, well since Windows Vista installing new OS has been an easy task, I think you will be okay. laugh.gif

Haha, the Np8150 can already play Crysis 2 @ Ultra settings. If overclocked, it plays even better. I haven't posted the results of that yet though...haven't got the time.

It is expensive because:
1) It uses desktop processors
2) 2 GPU solution e.g. 485m SLi
3) 3 Hard drive bays

It is more or less, the most powerful/expensive laptop right now. I don't think any other laptop manufacturer can overcome the hurdle of placing a desktop processor in a laptop motherboard (maybe in the future...but it's pretty bleak at the moment).

Yep. All Sagers are customizable (GPU, RAM, CPU, HDD, LCD, other things), except maybe the lower end mobility models (NP5170, NP5175, NP5160, NP5165...etc).

Currently the cheapest GAMING one would be about $1200 - 1300$USD...about RM3.8K without shipping. This is the NP8130, with Intel Core i7-2630QM, GTX 460m and 8GB RAM.

The mobility models are cheaper, about $800USD but they have the GT 555m/540m instead.

Mind you, that the laptop isn't really heavy but the adapter is very heavy! If you can afford exercising your shoulders then bringing it to Uni then the NP8150 isn't really that bad. I bring it out once in awhile. If your budget limit is up to RM8K, that's plenty to spend on things like SSDs and even enough for the GTX 485m. For me, I got this laptop for just its pure horsepower not portability. Another thing to note that it runs about 3 hours on balanced/power saver, so if you're not wanting the power adapter with you then this is something to think about smile.gif.

Hope it helps. Feel free to ask more questions before deciding smile.gif

lol... backlit keyboard is also important to me, but still not the decisive factor like you do. To me the awkward layout is killing more, Clevo really could have made it better.
No backlit keyboard can still do something on it like using LED light etc. keyboard layout is fixed and no way to change it.

Whoa, just know that the adapter can throw people dead... 180W is way too high above average laptop.

The speakers are amazing. 5.1 settings work on it, and the bass is very strong. It somewhat needs fiddling with the THX software that was included with it. And glow in the dark stickers are one option as I also use it on my netbook...although the labels will block the Clevo function keys off (if used), which are quite useful.

I did a similar config on XoticPC, the price got up to $4.2K, about RM12-13K. This isn't including shipping. so maybe it is about RM14K. About.

aiyo, i am sooo headache to make decision on this notebook. The keyboard layout is really killing, I do word processing a lot and keys like home, end, pg up, pg down are commonly used.
Can those keys become direct key if numlock is off?

I can tolerate keyboard without backlit, i can tolerate awkward numpad, but i cannot tolerate the home end pgup pgdn key...
I never expect keyboard can become a decisive factor for notebook zzz...

Another notebook i am considering is the Dell M4600. It offers everything i need except for the poor graphic card (~10% slower than 460m).

For Clevo i get only VGA but lose on dock station, keyboard, expresscard, 3G built in, 2nd hdd, warranty support.

Some rooms for upgrade for Clevo could be another plus point.

Yes they can be direct keys when numlock is off. In fact, if you're worried about the numpad, you can download programs that change the mapping of your keys. So by this, you can change your numpad to be your own macro'ed keys (e.g. Home, Pg Up etc.)

hey bro let's give me some ideas... laugh.gif

I thought Creative X-Fi USB 5.1 Surround is used for a great replacement for low quality on-board audio systems?? Please correct me if I'm wrong 'coz I'm quite noob at this... blush.gif
Since I saw you have a THX TruStudio Pro Surround Sound & 3W Subwoofer (which is not bad) in your Sager laptop, so is there REALLY a BIG difference in listening music/watching movies/playing games after adding in your Creative X-Fi USB 5.1 Surround sound card?
Tell me, I'd like to know the differences 'coz I wonder if there's an urgent need for me to buy a Creative X-Fi USB 5.1 Surround sound card too... notworthy.gif

USB soundcard or expresscard soundcard is not able to use the laptop built-in speakers, you need to connect it to external speakers.

I don't see the need for soundcard if buying this laptop actually for portable use. Addtional soundcard is needed if 5.1 channels sound is required and connected to 5.1 speakers.

Realtek soundcards are average still.

The Creative SB 5.1 enhances the sound, like there's a really big gap between a Realtek and a Creative card.

Hi Lamp, I just ordered the NP8150 from XoticPC (just entered Phase 2 yesterday) with specs similar to yours except I got the Intel 320 80GB and I also have the Cryo LX. Thanks to your review, I am getting all pumped up to receive my system! Can't wait! tongue.gif

Edit: By the way, could you please point me the direction of the instructions for modding your Cryo LX? I am interested in cleaning out the fans in mine and probably mod in some new fans as well. smile.gif

Thanks for reading smile.gif I'm sure you'll be amazed by the system. Sorry for the late replies though.

Anyway, if you'd like to mod your CryoLX, then look here:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/accessorie...dell-m1730.html

I based my mods from the user above. Similar, if not the same procedures smile.gif

Well, it's not difficult haha.

There's just a number of screws that you need to track down and dismantle. Two things that you need to be wary of; not pulling off the cable that connects the fans to the controller (I mean violently smile.gif ), and the right airflow when placing the fans. Once placing the fans, check if the airflow is pushing cold air upwards...you can try checking this by placing an A4 paper on top of the grill mesh then see if it flies away, or hovers on the mesh.

All in all, it's actually a really easy mod and looks great after. Oh, ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING. You need a 12V DC adapter from NZXT to power desktop fans at full speed. If your packaging doesn't include it (it didn't come with mine), you can order a replacement DC adapter from NZXT for free!

I think I got the adapter, will have to go home to check the voltage again. All in all, good tips, will copy and paste to Word. tongue.gif

@TruthHurts
As for 17" vs 15", the only thing that matters is the screen resolution, the screen size doesn't matter. For example, a 1024x768 on a 17" screen will run better than 1920x1080 on a 15" screen, provided all the computer's specs and the program that you are running are the same in both systems.

Okay! I've been reading about not connecting the USB ports to your PC or to any peripherals due to the high voltage load/high current load. I'm not entirely sure but I've seen accounts that said their stuff got fried. To this point, I never used the USB ports on my CryoLX for safety measures tongue.gif

Huh. I dunno, is this after modding? I've been connecting my stuff to USB on the stock Cryo LX like 3.5" HDD, 2.5" HDD, joystick, mouse but so far nothing fried. Only thing is maybe not enough power cause sometimes they dc when connected to the Cryo LX but no problems when connected directly to my laptop. This happens regardless of whether I use the adapter or not, it still dc as if there's not enough power for the USB hub in Cryo LX

So far, any issues on your NP8150 I should take note of? I'm still waiting on mine, I think I'm going to die from anticipation. laugh.gif
