Hi Mr.Azarimy,

I'm a STPM 2015 candidate, waiting for my STPM 2015 result currently and I'm interested in taking Architecture course.
I'd just manage to get 3.42 and 3.5 CGPA for my sem 1 and 2 but I think I'm able to get a 3.5 CGPA for overall STPM.
I'm lucky enough to get a band 5 in the MUET exam. ( 221 though ! 220 is the mark to get band 5 )
I did some research on internet about architecture courses and it appear that this course is only available in Research Universities.
After my research I think that UTM is going to be my first choice (but I'll still apply for USM's HBP course since USM application is different from UPU. And I'm afraid I'll be rejected by UTM as I researched that UTM qualification are quite high and the interview is very hard to pass sad.gif. Thats why. )
Then, the bad thing is that I'm a science (physic) stream student ( NOT ART sad.gif )
The good thing is that I like drawing since I was a kid. But I stop drawing at form 4. Now, I've been keep practicing on my drawing skills especially on sketches and drawing buildings after I finished my STPM.

So, do u mind if I ask u that

1. With my qualification as I stated above. Am I qualified to apply and compete with the applicants this year ? Is the chances to getting in high?

2. I read a blog about a girl that had 4.0 CGPA for STPM and went to USM,UTM,UKM,UM interviews for architecture course. But at last, she didnt get any architecture course from those Research Universities. ( This is what get me shocked the most ) cry.gif cry.gif

3. I heard from my teacher I have to prepare portfolio during the interview ( If I get one ). Can I use the drawing I drew nowadays as the portfolio during the interview ?

4. Besides practicing drawing and sketching. What can I do now to increase the probability of getting accepted by UTM ?

5. I live in Penang. My mum wishes me to apply for USM because its near-er to hometown. But I think that UTM is better since it has longer history and most of the lecturers of this course are from UTM. Are there any difference between USM and UTM's architecture course ? doh.gif

*Thank you sooooo much for the time u spent to read my post*
*I think the thing I fear the most is the qualification and the interview ?*

hi there,

before we begin, let me clarify that science students hold no disadvantage or advantage over arts students when applying to architecture.

and no, not all architecture programmes reside in research universities.

now to your questions:

1. cgpa gets u the interviews, but it doesnt guarantee u will pass it. it is quite common for a 4.00 to fail the interviews due to lack of confidence and inability to converse effectively during the interviews. so yes, getting a 3.50 will get u the interviews. beyond that, it's all about how u perform during them.

2. which blog/girl is that? like i mentioned in 1., it's quite common for anyone to fail the interviews. the tricky part about USM and UM vs UPU (UTM, UKM, UIAM, UPM, UiTM) is that they can offer u individually outside UPU. meaning USM and UM can cherry pick the best of the best of candidates before UPU gets the leftovers. UPU might overlook high-ranking candidates on the assumption that they will get an offer from either USM or UM. there's a chance USM or UM didnt pick them due to non-performance during interviews or simply because they already have fulfilled the vacancies.

3. yes. despite what they say "it's not explicitly required", having portfolio greatly boosts ur chances. the content of the portfolio is absolutely up to u. people always think that portfolio can only contain stuffs u do in school (like for SPM). that would mean science students such as urself would have nothing to show, right? well, WRONG.

portfolio is a collection of YOUR WORKS. any works. from kindergarten to STPM. in school or outside. proper training or self-taught. heck, it's not even limited to drawings. architecture is about design, not just arts. portfolio can contain photography, web design, wall murals/graffiti, sculptures, landscape, interior decor, comics, textile/fabric products, collages - literally anything. just because your friend is good in water colour means you cant beat them using your t-shirt designs!

4. practice debating and public speaking. this will be useful during interviews. also, start doing IQ tests, particularly those logic exercises.

5. the biggest difference between USM and other universities' part 1 courses is USM is offering a degree in HBP (housing, building and planning). so the course is broader and covers other built-environment areas, not just architecture. apart from there, all LAM approved programmes are similar.

hope this helps. please dont hesitate to ask further.

Alright. Thank you so much Mr.Azarimy !
Will let you know I have any question smile.gif
A really big thank you for your help and advice.
Also, will let u know the url of the blog/ girl i mention above as I'm on my phone right now.
Thank you again !

Hi Mr. Azarimy.
It's me again.
These few weeks I have been practicing drawing.
I found out that I'm not that good in designing.
What I'm trying to say is like, I'm not good at drawing with my imagination.
I know architecture course needs good imagination skill. Creative. A lot of ideas.
If I'm not that good at this,
Do you sir still recommend me to take this course ?
Can I learn that skill during the five years ?
Im not sure whether I'm not creative enough or just I can't apply on it ?
Or do u recommend me to have civil eng. which is calculation that I'm adapt to ?

Alright Mr. Azarimy.
The last thing I would want to know is the market of architect is not that good ( not demanding )
I know you've mention about it in your thread.
But, how is architect gonna work by future.
I mean, ppl hire u, finish project, done.
Or issit just like other full-time stable work ? unsure.gif

well, that's quite a broad question. let's assume u own ur own business. the fee for a complete project (design and build) is set between 3.75% (RM500mil and above) to 10% (below RM500k). meaning a RM1mil bungalow can earn u RM100k from start to finish. the project could take around 3-6months, which means RM16k to RM33k per month depending on duration.

as a practice, u usually will have 2-3 other projects overlapping each other. so u keep taking in projects to sustain ur business. at this point, each architect in malaysia serves around 16,000 citizens. if we're talking about bungalows alone, there could be at least 50 bungalows in there, not including renovations. and then there's government projects and all that stuff.

is it stable? well, if u're good, u will be.
*
So, if I'm a fresh Part II graduate. ppl hire me as full time worker. The work I do is like this ? ( As u mentioned )
Having 2-3 projects. Its just that the company earn big money, I earn experience ?

The job i mentioned if u have ur own practice (normally with part 3). U will have a few part 2s working for u which u employ on a permanent basis (say RM4k per month). As a part 3, u will have to look for projects to ensure ur business can continue and pay ur workers.

If u wanna practice with part 2, then u will most likely work for somebody else. In your perspective, u get paid monthly salary on a permanent basis, no need to worry about getting projects etc. Just do what u do. If there are plenty of projects, u'll busy and in turn u might get bonus. If there are no projects, the firm will enforce cost cutting measures and all that.
*
owhhh.
Then for now, whats the average pay for the fresh part 2 graduate ?
Are there any chances for a fresh part 2 graduate to be hire by SP Setia etc big firm to learn better stuffs / gain more experience ?
Or fresh part 2 graduate is just meant to be hire by part 3 architect ?

currently the average is around RM2.8k for a fresh part 2 grad. it's a bit higher than before despite the poor economic performance because of the 1 year working requirement after part 1 (before part 2). meaning by the time u grad part 2, u already have 1 year working experience. not exactly "fresh", i would say wink.gif.

if it were up to me, i'd avoid going into developer firms (SP setia, mah sing, IJM, glenmarie to name a few) if u're looking for experience. developers are very profit oriented. architects on the other hand are very client oriented. we fulfill the needs of the clients just like a fashion designer does. developers are like big retail companies that produces articles of clothing in massive scale. there's no place for individual one-on-one custom tailored designs to suite what each individual clients need. u dont experiment, u dont do anything out of the ordinary. there's a tried and tested formula, and u do exactly that.

not my cup of tea.
*
Owhh, then I know I will go after small firm. Hahaha
Thanks alot and really appreciate it from the deep under my heart cause I was soooo clueless then.
Thank you very much !! biggrin.gif notworthy.gif thumbup.gif
Now what I can do is just pray and get passed the interview! HAHA

Oh ya, and one thing sir.
According to

1. http://fab.utm.my/academics/undergraduate/architecture/ (UTM)
2. https://www.usm.my/index.php/en/about-us-3/...undergraduate-2 (USM)
3. http://www.lam.gov.my/accreditation/list-o...ised-programmes (LAM)

There are two courses offer by USM. ( Bachelor of Science HBP and Bachelor of Architecture )
Issit the BSc HBP for 3 years Part 1 and BArch for 2 years Part 2 ?
While UTM's is straight on 5 years including both Part 1 and Part 2 ?

yes, USM offers BSc HBP (part 1) followed by BArch (part 2)

no, UTM now offers BSc Arch (part 1) followed by MArch (part 2). UTM's 5 year BArch programme have been dissolved in 2014. all that remains is the part time BArch, which will become obsolete in about 2 years.
*
So the BSc HBP (Part 1) by USM is a general degree ?
That lead to broad-er route ?
I mean like those who get BSc in HBP can further study M.Arch / M. Landscape / M. Quantity Survery etc ?

we refer to it as broad-based. general degree refers to 3rd class degree (just above fail) wink.gif.

actually u can branch out into those masters even with a normal B.Sc.Arch from other schools, because landscape, QS, planning etc do not need an M.Arch or B.Arch in order to practice professionally. i think what u mean is "can i become a QS or planning or architect with just BSc HBP?". this one im not particularly sure. all this while i only deal with BSc HBP going into M.Arch part 2.
*
Then UTM is alot safer route then ! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif tongue.gif
But I've bought USM pin number already ._.
Any advice sir ?
I mean since I know that UTM is a better choice for architect, my USM 1st choice should be other like civil eng. etc as spare tyre ? hmm.gif

safer route? USM and UTM offer the same part 1 degree, and both are equally acceptable everywhere. i just dont know whether USM's degree can be used for QS, planning or others due to its broad-based content, but i'm sure UTM's BScArch couldnt.
*
Yeah. Thats what Im trying to say, since UTM BScArch is only for Arch, so Im just go toward it then.
Sorry haha I know my language is kinda funny and hard to understand.

Hi Sir ! It's me again.
Since the UPU permohonan has closed already, just wanna know.
If I'm lucky enough and get chosen to the interview, agak when is the interview ?
agak when can I receive the sms ?
and last question.
In these few weeks. The portfolio of mine has only 10 plus drawing/painting in it.
Do you think its ok ? Does the quantity really matters ?

the interviews will be held in may. so expect calls/sms in the next few weeks. different universities will have their specific interview dates, so please verify which is which first.

regarding portfolio, it depends on quality. but based on the people i have interviewed, quality work is extremely rare. if u dont have quality stuff, then u have to fall back to quantity. and 10 is nowhere near enough.

Okay got it. Thank you sir ! Thanks alot !

Hi mr azari. I wanted to ask you something about the interview.
Today morning, I went USM to attend the interview of Architecture course.
The drawing test's question is beach side dream house.
Stated : draw with archtecture textures and technologies.
I drew. Yes with architecture textures, but theres only one technologies, which is a door of 'garage', but allow the boat park inside instead.
During the interview. There were three interviewers. 2 female and 1 male. I started to introduce myself (cause I wanna let them know my passion toward architecture and my background. ) for a little while. The male interviewer tell me that i have to be fast, i have 10 mins only. ( maybe im nag ? )
Is my first impression bad? Im polite. For real.
Next, One of the female interviewer which is the head of design bla bla (she told us when we're having the drawing test) asked me to explain my drawing in BM! Im sorry, but i did it badly, in malay. sad.gif
I mentioned about the gothic style and modern style i used. but it seems like shes dislike with my slanted building. and said my drawing has only one technologies involved.
Then they want me to show them my portfolio.
I'd show them, but the head of design didnt even look at it. (She was listening me explaining the drawing with my poor malay. Maybe she thinks that my explanation is so bad ?)
Then I made a hugggggeeeee mistake. When they asked me why do i choose penang, there are so many other state. I thought they ask why do i choose to live in penang. as they didnt mention why choose USM. Then I answered ' because its my hometown. '
I realized that I misunderstood their question after the interview and while Im driving home sad.gif
But at the end I did tell them that I really doesnt speak with words but action, as I really put effort on the drawings of the portfolio after STPM.
But I'm too nervous and forgotten to tell them that I work very hard in past few months in my drawing skills as I'm not art stream student.
I think thats it.
I cant get over it where the head of design didnt even bother to look at my portfolio though. sad.gif
I'm not discouraged, I'm just, dont understand.
Can you tell me that where I did wrong ? As I really dont wanna mess up UTM interview. UTM is even more important than USM to me.
Thanks a lot for the time sir. Real big thanks.

first of all, congratulations for getting through ur 1st interview. it's very common to get nervous. u'll be better prepared when u face other interviews in the coming weeks.

i. language - usually BM is not critical. usually they will check ur conversational english to see if u can explain urself properly in a simple dialogue. BM is less critical, but still required for use in malaysian practice.

ii. role of interviewers - because there is very limited time for them to evaluate every single student, they usually assign roles to the interviewers. one will check ur language proficiency. another will check ur portfolio. one may concentrate on ur certificates and credentials and so on. so for one or more of them not checking up on something is very common.

iii. UTM interview is much more liberal. but it can be really diverse and unpredictable. u could end up talking about what u had for breakfast or what happened last night in game of thrones.

Hmm hmm.gif nod.gif
