Hi azarimy
I am in my early thirties. I got a mechanical engineering degree but currently pursue career in facility management / construction field.

What do you suggest for me to be eligible for taking part-time in UTM? Is it possible though?

Hello there. You are eligible, but please bear in mind that the route is long. Architecture needs 5 years fulltime. It can go up to 8 years if you do it part-time. Even with credit transfers from mechanical engineering, i dont think it'll help much.

Still interested?

Time is not what I worry about. I am really interested in architecture. If you try facility management which relate to assets (properties management) everyday you will talk about design. Architecture is like one of the highest disciple in a FM should have.

Regarding intake requirements, do understand it's not just about meeting minimum requirements. You will be competing with thousands of others. When it comes to 4.00 vs 4.00 STPM, they will start looking at your SPM or whatever education you had before for the tie-breaker.

Here is what I worry about.

1. Since UTM is the only place offering part-time. How fierce is the intake.

2. I hardly proud of my bachelor's exam result. Barely have any portfolio in architecture.

Please advise.

We are targetting to offer part-time B.Sc.Arch this Sept. It will be the same syllabus as the fulltime in Skudai. Its a bit more expensive, but it is part-time and will be based in KL. I will update here if the offer opens. You will have a better chance there.

I see. Then I can assume that this plan above have yet to materialize.

For the time being, can you suggest me what can I do to increase my chance for an admission when it is available?

Basically LAM is not in favour of having part-time architecture programmes in Malaysia. They have been heavily criticizing any moves towards introducing a part-time programme. The previous programme offered by UTM was discontinued, and although we presented a new 3+2 programme, only the masters programme received the green light.

We're still working to convince them to let us run the B.Sc.Arch. If all goes well, we might open intake for Sept 2019 sometime around mid next year. I will announce it here.

For the part-time programme, I dont think you have a lot of competition. Mainly because new programmes are not accredited, and being part-time, it's more expensive and do not qualify for any scholarship or loans.
