wrong, to lay 2'x2' shall be rm14/ pcs if the price to lay is rm 3.5

but the cost of one piece of 2x2 tile could be xxx% (>12 ringgit at least for those cheapo?) more than one piece of 1x1 tile(could be just 2-3 ringgit each)... so we have to calculate the total cost if cost is a concerned and not just looking at labour+material cost to lay...

7pc for 2x2 includes labour too i suppose?  Labour to lay a 2x2 may require 2 person at each time..that's why it is higher..  Have u tried to lift up a 2x2 tile..is quite heavy..heh.

i dun think the contractor u're negotiating with right now is professional enough ..
usually contractors would calculate the labour cost by sqft .. not by the size of tiles..

and if u wanna save some cost, sometimes when there're tile promotion, large size tiles, for example 16' x 16' might be cheaper in total tile cost, compared with if u buy smaller sqft size of tiles.

It meant RM11 sqf not RM2. How he count?
1x1 tile was around RM2 - 3 except you getting than damn expensive tile and he willing to pay what ever you choice.
You may want to ask him what the max $ of tile you are allow, than you wil know how much the labour are.

I was quoted for laying tiles (1'x2') for a car porch (400 sf) = RM4,000

Do you guys think it is reasonable?

Personally I felt it is too expensive.
Read through the previous post, I found the normal pricing are
labour + cement + sand = RM3.50/psf
1'x2' tiles = RM6.00

labour + cement + sand = 400 x RM3.50 = RM 1400
1'x2' tiles = 200 x RM6.00 = RM1200

Total = RM2600

@bteoh - can PM me ur contractor contract? i'm looking for people to hack and relay tiles too..i called up one contractor last week, he quoted me RM 8.40/sq ft for 2' x 2' (excluding tiles)...i found it a bit costly...

If hacking with charge differently...suck...

I've been suggested by a contractor to lay tiles on the existing in the bathroom rather than to hack it. However another contractor of my relatives outside of KL has advised that doing that is risky esp for condos. The waterproofing for the first layer may be bad so if there's a seepage it will collect between the tiles and affect the floor below. Best always to hack through.

Some contractors have charged hacking and dismantling separately at about 500 per bathroom. All of mine have done this which means that psf tiling not inclusive of tiles was about rm9. Cheapest! I think the smaller your work, the more exp it will be as most contractors won't mobilise to work for less than 10k. I wish I had learnt home reno in school!

Finally I decided and pull the tiles job from existing contractor and pass to other tiles specilist.

Reason been
1) SInce my leaving room is replacing 2 x 2 tile, hence can't relay on top of existing 1 x 1 tiles either short or long term
2) Possiable of foot injury as the 2 x 2 edge designed was 90 degree type and no rounding egde protected, whereby 1x1 or 1x2 have a round edge. So if unbalance on the surface work it may injury our leg when walk.
3) Difficult to get balance if laying on top on the exisitng tiles with 2 x 2 (refer item 2), hence hacking away is a better solution
4) mixed of existing tiles area and new area

Also, the labour on this tiles specilist (I didn't told me the cost I been charge) is much more cheaper compared to existing contractor which charge me RM 5.50 sf for Wall / Floor, and skarting was RM 3.50 sf for in house / RM 3.80 for car pourche, if hacking involve will charge differently. Example hacked of existing 600sf area he want additional RM2K.
The tile specilist charging is RM4.50 sf for lay tiles and RM 6.50 for area that require hack existing tile out and replaced it and nd skirting is RM3sf. (Price included everything like material / rubbush ...exclude tiles)

I may be like a sucker    pulling the work out from the contractor, but some time just need to ensure we pay $$$ is a good reasoable way lol

The labour cost (chinese workers) that I received is

a) RM3.20 per sq feet for 2 feet x 2 feet tiles
b) RM2.50 per sq feet for other dimension of tiles
c) RM2.00 per sq feet for other dimension of tiles that not required cement base

All the materials I bought myself...Hacking prev tiles is RM80 per 100 sq ft...Skirting is RM1.90 per sf...

Is the price ok? or can I get cheaper price (chinese workers) than this?

the contractor tell me hack labour is base on /sq ft ....   follow the market price how much for  hack and remove the rubbish  ????

easy to install, but the sand/ dirt also easy to trap underneath and the wood color also fade very fast
