Looks like the tiles have almost no gap to each other. Each tiles has different expansion rate. If not enough space, they push each other and popped up. sad.gif

I'm looking for a contractor to retile floor, bathroom walls, , kitchen and backyard.
Some of my 2x2 ft floor  tiles are coming off because the contractor 15 years ago tiled on top of the old terrazzo floor without hacking it. This seemed OK for a number of years, until I had to drill holes in the tiles for termite treatment a few years ago. The other thing that happened 2 years ago was my house got flooded and there was water under the tiles. Then the tiles started coming off a little by little and now I have large patches of tiles that are loose
Anyone has reliable and affordable contractor recommendations?

Nowadays, tiles on tile is not a problem. The mix i more like epoxy adhesive. Even my bathroom I had a tile directly on top of another tiles just to create a tile level height difference to keep the sink side dry and keep water from shower flows to drainage. This has been around 15 years already without any problem. I keep the splashing water from sower by putting shower curtain.

Have anyone use the tile reform (美缝剂) for grout sealant? It's very common in china because it is water repellant and fungus proof. Can match color with your tiles too. Not sure how to request this from my contractor haha

This is just like silicone product meant for wet area. it is stated to be anti-fungus and of course it is water proof as well. Nothing magic to it.

Some complained that is get dark in color. I guess it is just cheap fake product.

I see, I just asked my contractor they call it coloured grout.

Colored grout is different . Normal grouting material is like white cement. There are colored type other than common white but it is not silicone that I mentioned.

I am not sure what is it called. Can this be fixed?

That looks like just hardened splashed cement. I think you can just scrape it out using flat screw drive tips. smile.gif

Hi

I have a question. Dont know if this is even logical or possible.

If existing bathroom tiles are still in good condition but i want to replace them because want to change color / type, is it advisable to hack the existing tiles first or can straight install new tiles on it?
*
Take Q.V.RK advise. The adhesive or epoxy can surely hold the tile on top of other tiles securely if it is done properly. The surface of existing tile has to be thoroughly clean, otherwise it is possible that it will get de-laminated.

Removing old tile is easy with proper tool but then it is only thin layer if wall being hack off. Therefore, if new tile is not done properly also can cause the tile to fall off. However, I'll still go with removing old tile. If not the edge of tile like near the door will look thick and not nice I guess.

Does anyone have recommendation for tilers in Klang Valley / PJ area?

Am doing a sub-sale home reno currently but having an issue with the main con (supposedly a reputable ID company) regarding the tiling works.
Their standard height for waterproofing at SHOWER area is 1 ft.
Their reasoning is that their tilers informed that if do 6ft waterproofing, the wall tiles may not stick so well and there's risk of hollow/popping tiles. Is this true?

Have tried discussing and trying to come to a resolution and I've suggested either :
1/ continue with their standard 1 ft water proofing but extend the general 1 yr warranty to 3 years warranty for water proofing (that's not too demanding, is it? I understand that most would provide >=5 yrs warranty on waterproofing
2/ do 6ft waterproofing and the general warranty for tiles hollow/popping remains at 1 year

They did not agree to either. If their 1ft water proofing has not been an issue, I don't see why they cant just provide me a 3 year warranty.
For the 6ft waterproofing option, they refuse to provide the 1 yr warranty on any SHOWER tiles that is hollow/popping.

A foot water proofing from floor is pretty standard. The wall normally exposed to splashing water. The water will flows directly to floor. The tile is water is water proof and the grouting is also waterproof.

Why contractor will not put long warranty? Normally after a year or two, the wall get cracked due to building foundation sink. When this happened, water will pass through the crack and cause dispute.

Tile popping or not I think has nothing to to with water proofing. Well, they have their own experience and maybe they have reason for it. Maybe the material they used. My bathroom I added 3 more rows of tile just with just chipping around 1mm hole here and there only still fine after more than 10 years. The cement mix with tile glue stick onto even painted wall just fine. So, the technology that existed > 10 years ago has no problem smile.gif

got this tiling quote from my contractor, for a wet kitchen extension. would like to know if it's reasonable?

Floor tiling labour w/o tiles  20' x 5' RM 1200
Wall tiling labour w/o tiles  50' x 10' RM 5000

if by reading the previous postings, seems on the high side?

thanks

I have no idea on current rate but I'd say it is definitely expensive if it is just for tiling job shakehead.gif
