Samsung has taken the opening salvo against the iPad 2, coming out with the would-be iPad killer, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The tab is more iPad-sized, runs Android Honeycomb platform, takes 8 megapixel photos, allows for improved video chats with a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and includes a one-gigahertz NVidia Tegra 2 dual core processor to power everything. Some could say it's steroids-injected version of the 7-inch Galaxy tab. Dubbed "the ultimate entertainer," the tab is being marketed as a mobile multimedia hub for those who want to take their leisure pursuits — games, e-books, Facebook, Twitter, music and movies/TV shows — on the go. Besides the bigger screen, the dual surround-sound speakers add to that private theater effect. It's also lost the glossy back of the smaller tab and is slimmer. Excerpt & Edited from Technolog

Engadget quote 13 Feb :Samsung says the 10.1 will be launching in March in both Asia and Europe -- Vodafone will be the first carrier to nab the Tab -- but it had absolutely no timing details for the US market. Price? We've got no idea, though we're told it will be "competitive.
HONEYCOMB the latest Android version 3.0 specifically for tablets
On Feb 2, Google officially launch Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The hour long event was subsequently posted on Youtube.
A new Motorola XOOM was used to demo the new OS doing a fantastic job showing off Google’s new tablet-only OS. From the new home screen and app-switcher UI to the revamped YouTube interface and the email application — Honeycomb appears to be much better suited for tablets than currently available versions of the OS, and Android fans are right to be excited. This new OS will be on the new Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Google announced that Honeycomb will feature an easy to access multitasking toolbar, showing your recently opened and running applications, all from the home screen. Honeycomb will improve the way widgets can be displayed, allowing for developers to create widgets that are based on collections of data, which will allow for the user to run apps in 'little windows' on your home screen.
Android 3.0 will also come with a new notification system, with toast popups in the lower right-hand corner. The notifications can now contain images of friends when they send you a message. The notification system will even allow for apps, like a media player, to appear on screen, for quick access.
Honeycomb will come with hardware acceleration, and with just a single line of code, existing applications can take advantage of the 2D hardware acceleration. Honeycomb will come with a new engine for powering 3D graphics on your devices. Lastly, Android 3.0 'Honeycomb' will allow support video chat, with a supported handset or tablet with a front-facing camera, using Google Talk.

wow...uncle benny, plan to buy this tab in future?really hope can get honeycomb on galaxy tab..
I am very interested in this Galaxy Tab 10.1 BUT I don't plan to buy it, at least not when it is released. I might buy it much later on just for fun, main-main saja , to explore the wonders of Honeycomb. Anyone bought one and later wishes to sell at reasonable cheaper price - just PM me.
The reason is simple . I ask myself why do I need a 10" tablet ? I am very comfortable with my current 11" MacBook Air which I bought to replace the 9.7" iPad. For a tablet - I will look for first most PORTABILITY and versatility - I must say my current Galaxy Tab doesn't disappoint me. I must say this is one of the better purchase decisions I have ever make
But I am still interested in this iPad challenger . I started this thread to follow its progress and will make it an official thread later when we have more information, pricing and release dates

Clove also got pre order .... Is it a right decision to sell my iPad to get halaxy tab 10.1 ??
Only you can answer this question ? Just ask yourself what you need/what is important on a 10" tablet - your answers will decide for you. I'd also say any decision to whether sell off the ipad should wait for what is in iPad 2. Maybe what you feel lacking in ipad could be resolved in ipad 2?
I believe somewhere in engadget mentioned about battery life. anyway its 6500mah, way more then the previous tab.
Should give around the same life as the previous due to the dual core?
The current TAB is reported to have a battery life of 7 hours on continuos video. Seriously I doubt anyone will be using it continuously on video. Having use the TAB for 30+ days, I can confirm for a mix usage of browsing, calls - SMS, some videos, audio it can easily last up to 10 hours
Just to quote an experience of mine on the TAB:
Yesterday I was on the road from 2 pm and did not use by TAB at all until 9 am this morning. That is about 20+ hours in standby mode - battery life left 42 % However during this period the TAB is still online solely on 3G updating:
Emails - refresh and download 4 accounts ( Gmail, Yahoo, TM, 1 biz account ) every 15 minutes Weather ( 2 apps Fancy Widgets and Palmary Weather Pro ) - every 4 hours RSS Newsfeed/Tweets updates - every hour
Some latest tidbit news from GalaxyTabbing about the Tab 10.1:
t’s time to dazzle your friends and family with your amazing knowledge of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Here are five amazing facts about the worlds most popular Android tablet:
1. Samsung partnered up with NVidia to design and prototype the new Tegra 2 dual core processor for the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1. Ever wondered by Samsung would use someone else’s processor to power up their line of second generation touchscreen tablets? It’s because the Nvidia dual-core processor was made available before their own. “It was purely a time to market issue” as per Khan, Samsung’s Chief Strategy Officer. In fact it was rumored that Samsung had their own in-house design team working on a dual core processor, but it they just couldn’t bring it to production fast enough to keep pace with the completion.
2. Samsung has chosen RF Micro Devices, Inc, a global provider in the design and manufacturing of high-performance radio frequency components and compound semiconductor technologies, to enable a broad portfolio of next-generation 3G/4G devices.
3. The camera on the Galaxy Tab has an innovative feature called ‘Smile Shot’, that will automatically trigger when the subject smiles.
So is this tablet an upgrade of Tab 1 or just a competitor for iPad? Tab 1 can be used as a phone while ipad is just a netbook.
I'd think it is meant to compete with the Ipad and other 9 to 10" Android/Windows tablets. The current TAB would remain as a high portable tablet cum phone
If only the camera on the TAB 1 was good, it would be the perfect phone for me A good phone, netbook and a good camera=perfect!
Alas only a dream. There will never be an ideal 99 perfect machine. Sometimes I think these various manufacturers are in cahoots with one another , giving us a consumers a wider choice. And we endup spending, changing and upgrading from one to the other Anyway I have yet to test camera - better test it afterwards just in case it is not working.
What? You had it for a month and you haven't tested the camera yet? You're talking about your TAB right?
YES. Never need to use it ; also never even think of ever using it. Too big-lah holding it up to take shots. I use the TAB as a tablet only - email, browser, Tweets, Newsfeed, light edits office work, watch youtube, audio book, ebook reader . Once a while SMS ; calls tried few times only when new. I tested the audio, GPS, bluetooth - all OK
Why don't you use it for calls? Can use bluetooth if holding it is too awkward hehe
My main line is on another phone. If I put the mainline line on the TAB - all my calls diverted to another small phone , a old Nokia

Great news for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S2 owners! It has been confirmed that these 2 devices will get the TwinView technology or the ability to stream TV contents. Plus it offers the dual-screen streaming functionality via Samsung remote which is its second TV Smart Touch TV remote. This big plus technology would be available for those who bought the D8000 or D7000 range of televisions. These information were announced at CES 2011.
At the Mobile World Congress during the launching of their Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung also gave some indications that this technology will also be made available to other devices. Russell Owens, General Manager at CTV & AV marketing, said that the service will be only for just the two mentioned devices as for now. He said “At the moment, from a technology point of view, we can confirm that it will be for the Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy S2. The Android app should be out in March and it will offer the same functionality as the upcoming Second TV remote.”
A nice feature of this app is that it allows you to show two screens/TV channels on a Samsung mobile device. Mr. Owen added that there was a slight delay on the availability of the Smart Touch Control TV remote, which was initially decided to go with the D8000 series. It will now be as a bundled accessory after D8000 is launched.
February 25, 2011, 8:48 pm : Vodafone Portugal has announced through a press release the pricing of the new released Galaxy Tab 10.1-inch which is set to €699.90. According to Vodafone, the new Galaxy Tab slate will arrive in Portugal in March.

Looks like there will be a " back to the drawing board" for the Tab 10.1. If Samsung were to release this in the market, the immediate action must be to reduce the price to be drastically lower than ipad2 In the words of Steve Jobs in his last press conference - this tablet will be be another D.O.A
