azamunekurone: Wah, first time hearing about the 16-105mm getting gear stripping! So we will be cursed with a SAM in the next iteration.

Newbieeeeee: With all due respect to goldfries - while he is experienced, he is not up to speed and aware of certain details of the Sony Alpha system and I have on occasion spotted inaccuracies.

Anyway, the A33 and A55 have a stabilized viewfinder, which is apparent when recording video. Can't remember if it activates when the shutter is half-pressed, though.

In-lens stabilization has its optical drawbacks as well. All the light needs to pass through a smaller IS lens group. Without IS, the optical design avoids narrowing the light path. You can find people saying the non-IS 70-200mm F2.8 L is sharper than the L IS (but I don't know how the new L IS II compares to the non-IS.) You can also find people saying that the IS does things to your bokeh.

You won't see in-lens stabilization in certain lens designs e.g. the 50mm F1.4 because the lens is just filled up with glass.

lwliam: The "in-lens is tuned to lens" argument is usually stated without knowing that in-body stabilization does take into account the focal length. The longer the focal length, the more the sensor moves.

So, in-body stabilization is also tuned to the lens used.

agree with you on that.. thats where the bar on the bottom left comes into play... lenses without chips though, i think is the loophole

Expect to pay at least RM 4k for that lens. It's not cheap! Saw the RRP on Sigma's website and it's listed at USD 1,400 sweat.gif

lwliam: Indeed - Olympus and Pentax do a more empowering job. They let you enter the focal length (on certain bodies) so the in-body stabilization will work on unchipped lenses as well.

8tvt: The focal length you enter is only one value. Since the lens is unchipped anyway, it has no way to tell the Olympus or Pentax what the focal length is LOL.

So what people do is they pick the most commonly used focal length of an unchipped zoom lens, or the halfway point, e.g. 140mm for a 70-210mm F4.5-5.6.

This is because Olympus and Pentax support their manual-focus lenses - Olympus sells an adapter for OM Zuiko to Four-Thirds mount. Pentax K-mount lenses can be manual focus also because they did not change the mount when going from MF to AF (like the Nikon F mount.) Pentax also sells an M42 to K-mount adapter, as M42 is often called the "Pentax M42 screw mount".

lwliam: Yes there are unchipped manual focus zoom lenses. biggrin.gif

a33 is a good camera, but for me, i'll rather like the a55 over the a33.

why?
-it has the new sensor
-10fps vs 7fps
-gps tagging (useless for me)

but the a55 is out of stock for the time being. anyways, the a33 is good. yeah.
