pretty normal when it comes to low-light shooting
it's either you use flash when it comes to shooting people during night time, or use tripod plus low ISO n low shutter speed when shooting night scene/landscape

since you mentioned scene, have you thought of investing in a ultra wide angle lens?
food and people can be settled using your 50mm f1.8 unless it's too tight then you can opt for the newly released 35mm f1.8 (http://kurtmunger.com/sony_dt_35mm_f_1_8_reviewid235.html)

i having a big dilemma for choosing between 70300 & 70400... ><" last night went to sony wing try out both lenses, never thought 70400 will be such heavy after zoom to 400 is kind of hard to take a steady shoot.... 300 is kind of lite & small picture still looking sharp.... but less 100mm~ anyone can help??><"

kuro0314, both lenses optimum usages are meant for outdoors, under bright sun... i've tried the 70-400, its quite light IMHO, just that the diameter is a bit larger than the 70-300, so gripping on the 70-300 is more ergonomic.

what are your requirements for a lens? super sharp? travel friendly? longest range u can get?

i'd rate these from top to bottom for a tele travel lens..

55-200 tele kit lens
70300G tele lens
70400G tele lens
70200G f/2.8 tele lens

super sharp as prioriity second will be the longest range~ travel friendly never thought of it untill last night...
for 70400 the biggest problem is i cant hold still when it go to 400mm even i try to hold my breath, from the OVF it looks shaky after the shoot.
