Warhead Found in Peenemünde

May 2011

Kröslin / Peenemünde (2011) – It was announced yesterday that on March 30, 2011, a fisherman from Kröslin found the remains of a V-2 rocket nose in the vicinity of the Historical and Technical Museum Peenemünde. It was discovered in the reed-covered shoreline of Kröslin. Museum curator Christian Mühldorfer-Vogt said yesterday, “ This is a relatively well-preserved head of a missile, a V-2 test rocket. ”

Perhaps more light is now shed on a particular test of a V-2 missile. According to an Army Research Institute launch report from Test Stand VII on February 19, 1943, this nose probably belongs to the thirteenth test missile fired from tip of Usedom. Being test flight number thirteen was most likely a bad omen for on this particular V-2, as nothing worked properly. The missile was supposed to soar 200 miles down the test range along the Pomeranian coast.

Immediately at lift-off a fire broke out in the rear of the rocket. This caused a deflection in the beam and the rocket flew instead off course to the southwest. The rocket crashed after only 4.8 kilometers of flight. The discovery of the missile tip suggests that the ominous start of the experiment and its conclusion is confirmed.

The fisherman first informed the water police and reported an unusual object. The tip was vertical in the reeds. The test body was free of explosives. As with all other rocket launches at Peenemünde, the warhead was filled with sand. The sand simulated the weight of the explosive material during the tests. After the investigation the warhead was given to the Historical and Technical Museum in April. It will be kept in the museum’s restoration workshop where the condition of the object is carefully documented and consideration is given for various options for preservation.

Apart from the weathering damage caused by nearly 70 years of resting in the reed area, the nose of the missile appears more remarkably well preserved, ” said museum curator Mühldorfer-Vogt. With the recent discovery, the museum now has four original V-2 warheads, two at the entrance main museum and a third attached to the life-size A-4/V-2 replica. Additionally, the replica has many other original V-2 parts. The newly discovered missile warhead will be installed in the movie hall of the museum following its preservation.

Iran shows downed US drones to Russia

A high-ranking Iranian military commander says Russian technicians have visited the wreckage of several US drone aircraft downed over the Persian Gulf.

The Commander of the Aerospace Division of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, told reporters on Tuesday that a team of Russian military experts has recently paid a visit to Iran in order to study the remains of US manufactured drones, Fars news agency reported.

In January, Iran's Armed Forces announced that they have shot down two remote-controlled American surveillance drones in the Persian Gulf over Iranian controlled territories.

The report comes as the United States has beefed up its military presence in and around the Persian Gulf region in recent months in the wake of popular uprising in Bahrain.

The US Department of Defense says Washington is closely monitoring the developments in Bahrain, which is the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet and holds some 4,200 US service members.

The US military and the CIA regularly use drones to launch missile strikes in Afghanistan and in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region.

Upgradation of T-72 tanks begins in Jaisalmer

TNN Jun 30, 2011, 03.30am IST

JAISALMER: The Army with the help of a team of Russian scientists are performing summer trials for the modified version of Russian tank T-72 in Jaisalmer's Lathi Field Firing Range. The summer trials will continue for one week. By the end of 12th Five Year plan, some armoured regiments will replace the T-72 with T-90 tanks. The rest of armoured regiments having T-72 tanks will undergo major modification such as introduction of an upgraded 1000 BHP engine and thermal imaging fire control system, said a defence laboratory official based at Jodhpur.

The Army recently commenced a project to upgrade its T-72M1 Main Battle Tanks. Over the past two decades, the T-72M1 has provided yeoman service to the Army. It is well liked by the Army for its ruggedness, low silhouette and weight (41.5 tons) as well as firepower. The T-72M1 is the backbone of the Indian armoured fleet with over 1700 tanks believed to be in service. Licence production of the tank was undertaken at the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi, Tamil Nadu. To keep the tank fleet viable, an upgrade plan was drawn up by the Army. But during the early 1990s, the economy went through a tumultuous phase and the resulting fiscal problems forced these plans into abeyance.

HIT Burraq MRAP

War in Frontier Drives Pakistan's Efforts To Boost Protection

ISLAMABAD - Heavy casualties from roadside bomb attacks during anti-Taliban operations have led Pakistan's state-owned Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) to increase vehicle protection and develop an indigenous mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle, the Burraq.

Military spokesmen have acknowledged the considerable casualties caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This is echoed by South Asia analyst Brian Cloughley, who is familiar with some of the countermeasures employed.

" The Army's casualties from IEDs in [Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/Federally Administered Tribal Areas] began to increase in 2006, and countermeasures were taken, including local upgrades, less use of unarmored vehicles and introduction of more [armored personnel carriers] from the eastern frontier, " he said.

He also said HIT concurrently increased production of the U.S. M113.

Initial efforts to counter the IED threat by acquiring MRAP vehicles from the U.S. were unsuccessful because of the high cost of overseas options, said Haris Khan of the Pakistan Military Consortium. Therefore, during the initial anti-Taliban operations, troop movements were carried out in soft-skinned vehicles (trucks and pick-ups), which offered no protection against small-arms, sniper, mine, IED and RPG-7 attacks.

The M113 was better protected but not the ideal response.

" The M113's armor doesn't provide much protection from small-arms' fire, never mind IEDs of the size that are now being employed by the insurgents, " Cloughley said.

HIT responded by developing a lighter bar-armor package for fighting vehicles that has been fitted to the M113 and the Type-59II, which along with the Al-Zarrar tank, is used for mobile direct-fire support.

Earlier this month, at a conference organized by Defence iQ, a military forum, HIT chairman Lt. Gen. Ayyaz Salim Rana specifically cited Dragunov/SVD-armed snipers as a danger to the operators of turret-mounted heavy machine guns. In response, HIT developed a sheet-metal shelter to allow the heavy machine gun to be fired from under armor.

The Army also has deployed HIT's Mohafiz security vehicle, based on the British Land Rover Defender 110. The Mohafiz does not offer much protection against IEDs or mines. A slightly less armored variant of the Defender, the British Snatch vehicle, has been heavily criticized for its lack of protection in Afghanistan and Iraq.

To counter the IED/mine menace, HIT developed the Burraq, a four-wheel-drive MRAP first seen on state media briefly in February 2010.

Despite being denied the opportunity to publicly unveil the Burraq at the canceled IDEAS2010 show in December, HIT still refused to give any information. Still, Cloughley has praised it as " a step in the right direction. " From his initial observations, Khan said, " it can accommodate at least eight or perhaps even 12 men," and probably weighs about 12 to 15 tons. He said the main benefit of the Burraq is its obvious V-shaped hull and raised compartment to protect the crew against mines and IEDs. He also said that, like the Mohafiz, it would provide " basic protection against 7.62mm armor-piercing bullets, though it may have the capacity to have additional armor fitted to withstand 14.5mm or even RPG-7 rounds. "

He also observed that the Burraq used the same wheels as the Mohafiz, which perhaps indicates HIT tried to use as many existing subsystems from the smaller vehicle as possible to hurry the Burraq into service.

" It is certainly geared toward fighting in the rough terrain of northwest Pakistan, " Cloughley said.
