USAF Indefinitely Grounds F-22 Raptors

By SCOTT FONTAINE and DAVE MAJUMDAR
Published: 5 May 2011 17:48

The U.S. Air Force has grounded all of its F-22 Raptors until further notice because of potential malfunctions in the fighter jets' oxygen-generation system.

Gen. William Fraser, commander of U.S. Air Combat Command, ordered a stand-down of the 165-plane fleet May 3, ACC spokeswoman Capt. Jennifer Ferrau said. Ferrau didn't immediately know how long the Raptors will be out of service.

The On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) has been under investigation since an F-22 crashed in November just outside Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Until the stand-down, Raptor sorties had been restricted to an altitude of 25,000 feet or below for training missions because of the potential malfunctions.

The limits were " designed for mishap prevention and is a prudent measure to ensure the OBOGS are operating safely, " ACC spokesman Col. William Nichols said in March, when the command first publicly disclosed the investigation.

An OBOGS malfunction can be potentially life-threatening, said Hans Weber, who sat on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's Research, Engineering and Development Advisory Committee, and is president of Tecop International, a San Diego consulting firm.

" It's a big deal if you're at high altitude and you run out of oxygen, " Weber said in a March interview.

At 50,000 feet, a human being has less than 10 seconds of useful consciousness, he said. The 25,000-foot altitude restriction would allow the pilot to quickly dive below 18,000 feet, where the atmosphere has enough oxygen to ensure prolonged survival in case of an emergency.

" It would take you so long when you're way up high, you may black out before you make it to a safe altitude, " Weber said.

Turkey is capable enough to produce its own aircraft carrier

Turkey's defense industry undersecretary said on Saturday that Turkey was capable enough to produce its own aircraft carrier thanks to its recent achievements in maritime industry.

Turkey's defense industry undersecretary said on Saturday that Turkey was capable enough to produce its own aircraft carrier thanks to its recent achievements in maritime industry.

Murad Bayar said a country had to own at least two new destroyers, one submarine, one ASW, one ASuW, one conventional helicopter, four missile boats, 40 war jets that can land and take off from the aircraft carrier, and fuel tanker in order to own such a giant carrier.

" Also, the carrier should employ 1,000 to 5,000 staff according to its dimensions, " Bayar told AA correspondent.

Bayar said the undersecretariat was providing 52.1 percent of Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) needs by local possibilities.

" Our turnover has reached 2.7 billion USD, exports to 853 million USD, and annual R&D expenditures to 600 million USD, " Bayar said.

Bayar said today, there was a Turkish company among the to 100 defense industry companies in the world.

The undersecretary said Turkey's Gokturk 2 satellite would probably be launched in the second half of 2012.

Bayar said the F-35 project schedule had been extended for two years, and technical and political initiatives were under way.

The undersecretary also said the first aircraft within the framework of A400M project was planned to be delivered in September 2013.

Turkey to make light helicopters, possibly with Sikorsky

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

UMİT ENGİNSOY

ISTANBUL – Hurriyet Daily News

Turkey soon will begin to design and develop a military and civilian light utility helicopter, probably together with a foreign partner, and possibly the U.S. Sikorsky Aircraft, defense procurement chief Murad Bayar said late Monday.

Bayar's remarks to Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review came during a boat tour of the Bosphorus on the sidelines of the 2011 International Defense Industry Fair, or IDEF, held in Istanbul between May 10 and 13.

Turkish President Abdullah Gül opened the fair Tuesday, saying that Turkey has been attaching great importance to defense industry in recent years.

“ The country particularly has experienced great improvement in terms of designing the productions and using local sources in defense industry, ” Gül said.

Earlier Bayar said on the light utility helicopter issue that Sikorsky, a leading manufacturer of various helicopters, did not have a helicopter weighing between 4,500 and 5,500 kilograms, the type of platform Turkey wants to develop.

" Turkey and Sikorsky Aircraft together can work on this matter. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, we are ready to work with other companies, " Bayar said.

Another top Turkish defense official said Turkey wanted a foreign partner that can bring marketing advantages to the light utility helicopter program.

" It's not that we can't make that helicopter, we can make it. But we would prefer to work with a company that has large marketing capabilities also in third markets, " Muharrem Dortkasli, general manager of Turkish Aerospace Industries, or TAI, Turkey's main aerospace company.

Export eyed for new copters

Both Bayar and Dortkasli said the new product should appeal to customers from Turkey and several other countries.

Bayar said Turkey would seriously begin to work on this new program later this year. "This is a high-priority program for us, " he said.

Sikorsky Aircraft in late April won a $3.5 billion contract against the Italian AgustaWestland to jointly manufacture the T-70 large utility helicopter weighing more than 10,000 kilograms, a Turkish version of its S-70i International Black Hawk.

Sikorsky and its Turkish partners led by TAI will produce in the first batch a total of 109 helicopters, mostly for military and security forces. With follow-on orders, the number of utility helicopters to be jointly produced may exceed 600, defense officials have said.

Turkish and Sikorsky officials have already discussed the light utility helicopter, and those talks are expected to intensify in future month.

A total of 25 defense ministers and four chiefs of the general staff attended IDEF's opening. More than 500 local and international companies are taking part in the fair.

Turkey presently spends slightly over $4 billion for defense procurement a year, but in upcoming years this figure will rise in line with several major programs taking effect

The bi-annual IDEF fairs have been held in Turkey since the 1990s. Organized in odd years, the fair had been held in Ankara. But the venue changed in 2009, and the fair was taken to Istanbul.

Pakistan may give ' interested ' China access to secret US copter remains in Abbotabad

Washington, May 11(ANI): China may soon get its hands on the wreckage of the United States' secret stealth-modified helicopter, which was abandoned by its troops during a raid on Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden's compound in Abbotabad, according to Pakistani officials.

The US has already asked the Pakistanis to return the helicopter wreckage, but one Pakistani official told ABC News that the Chinese were also " very interested " in seeing the remains.

Another official said : " We might let them [the Chinese] take a look. "

According to the report, a US official said he did not know if the Pakistanis had offered a peek of the chopper's remains to China, but added that he would be "shocked" if the Chinese had not already been given access to the damaged aircraft.

The chopper, which aviation experts believe to be a highly classified modified version of a Blackhawk helicopter, clipped a wall during ' Operation Geronimo ' , the White House said.

The US Navy SEALs, who rode in on the bird, attempted to destroy it after abandoning it on the ground, but a significant portion of the tail section survived the explosion, the report said.

In the days after the raid, the tail section and other pieces of debris- including a mysterious cloth-like covering that the local children found entertaining to play with- were photographed being hauled away from the crash site by tractor, it added.

According to the report, aviation experts said the unusual configuration of the rear rotor, the curious hub-cap like housing around it and the general shape of the bird are all clues the helicopter was highly modified to not only be quiet, but to have as small a radar signature as possible.

The helicopter's remains have apparently become another chip in a tense, high-stakes game of diplomacy between the US and Pakistan following the US' unilateral military raid of bin Laden's compound inside Pakistan.

According to former White House counterterrorism advisor Richard Clarke, the potential technological advancements gleaned from the bird could be a " much appreciated gift " to the Chinese.

" Because Pakistan gets access to Chinese missile technology and other advanced systems, Islamabad is always looking for ways to give China something in return, " Clarke said.

If the Chinese are allowed to see the wreckage, it may not be the first time the Chinese military was given an opportunity to benefit technologically from America's misfortune, the report said.

In 1999, an American stealth F-117 Nighthawk bomber was shot down in Serbia, the wreckage of which was reportedly passed along to the Chinese. (ANI)

DASA Lampyridae (Firefly)

Medium Range Missile Fighter (MRMF)

Daimler-Benz Aerospace (DASA) has revealed details of a previously top-secret Stealth aircraft research programme conducted in Germany during the 1980s. The programme, known as Lampyridae (Firefly), or Medium Range Missile Fighter (MRMF), was run from 1981 to 1987 by what was then Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB), under a contract from the German air force. The work led to the eventual development of a three-quarter scale piloted windtunnel model of a multi-faceted Stealth fighter. Former project leader Dr Gerhard Löbert claims that the design “ very probably ” had better radar characteristics than the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, despite the F-117 having more than twice the number of radar-scattering facets.Windtunnel testing began on a 1:3.5-scale low-speed model and a 1:20-scale transonic model in 1985. According to Löbert, these tests demonstrated high-quality aerodynamic properties, despite the disadvantages of the polyhedral airframe design.

Iran plans to build advanced submarines

Commander of Iran's Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the country's naval forces plan to build “ modern submarines " for a stronger Iranian presence in international waters.

“ The construction of modern submarines is underway according to the needs of the country's naval forces for a stronger presence in international waters, ” Sayyari told IRNA on Wednesday.

Sayyari noted that the naval forces are using new military equipments to “ defend our country, interests and maritime borders. ”

In April, the Navy announced plans to manufacture and deploy a new 500-ton submarine that is larger than Iran's current Ghadir submarine.

The 120-ton Ghadir submarines joined the Iranian naval fleet in 2007. The Islamic Republic navy is believed to be operating more than ten of the light-weight subsurface vessels, primarily in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

In recent years, Iran has made important breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly declared that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that Tehran's defense doctrine is based merely on deterrence.

The Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier Projects (1942-1943)

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

From the end of the 1940 war year on, German naval leadership concerned itself-at least partially as a result of the successful British carrier-plane attack on the Italian fleet at Tarento with considerations as to how to remedy the lack of aircraft carriers most quickly. Subjects under discussion concerned not only the reconstruction of existing large warships, but also the adaptation of merchant ships, insofar as they seemed suitable in terms of size and speed. Included in these considerations were the battleships SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU, as well as the heavy cruisers LUTZOW ( ex-pocket battleship " Deutschland " ) and ADMIRALSCHEER on the one hand, and the three passenger ships EUROPA, POTSDAM and GNEISENAU of the North German Lloyd line on the other.

The three passenger ships were the only ones that met the basic requirements: the EUROPA was the largest, since the loss of the BREMEN to fire, weighing nearly 50,000 tons, and had a suitable top speed of 27 knots, while the POTSDAM and GNEISENAU, of only about 18,000 tons and a speed of 21 knots, were somewhat less well-suited though still usable. In addition, the rebuilding of the heavy cruiser SEYDLITZ, about 90% finished, seemed feasible, as opposed to the battleships of the SCHARNHORST class and the heavy cruisers LUTZOW and ADMIRAL SCHEER, which were dropped from these considerations.

The creation of aircraft carriers was one of the main points in the Commander of the Navy's report to Hitler at the latter's headquarters on May 13, 1942. Thereupon Hitler decided that the ' EUROPA, GNEISENAU and POTSDAM should be rebuilt into auxiliary carriers. In a further report taking place on August 26, 1942 a further possibility was suggested: this involved the French cruiser DE GRASSE, lying on the slipway in Lorient, the rebuilding of which into an aircraft carrier seemed feasible.

The rebuilding plans for these ships were begun at once. In the process it was learned that the task had obviously been strongly underestimated and the difficulties that would necessarily arise in the construction of these ships, intended as they were for fully different purposes, had gone unrecognized. It was chiefly their form and weight stability and their inner division that were insufficient. It was believed that these problems could be mastered by applying a thick " armor plate " of heavy cement and building on side bulges, but this could not be achieved in a really satisfactory way and, in addition, brought about a limitation of their speed, which was not that great to begin with. The EUROPA-now designated " Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier I "- was to be rebuilt by Blohm & ; Voss in Hamburg-her builders-but this did not transpire : as early as November 25, 1942 the work of planning was halted and the rebuilding was cancelled even before the work had begun. The reason for this was the lack of stability even with the bulges built on, the problem of rigidity caused by the lowering of the hangar deck into the main formation deck, which could not be done any other way, and finally the expected very high fuel consumption when the ship was in use again.

The rebuilding of the other passenger ships was to be entrusted to the naval shipyards at Wilhelmshaven (GNEISENAU) and the Howaldt Works of Hamburg (POTSDAM; what with the cancellation of the rebuilding of the EUROPA, the contract for the POTSDAM was transferred to Blohm & Voss in November of 1942). With them too, problems of a very similar kind arose, especially in terms of stability, which were addressed with the same means-building on bulges and applying heavy concrete " armor plate. " But since these measures were, in the end, not able to make much change, the work on the GNEISENAU was halted on November 25, 1942, so that only the POTSDAM remained.

According to a decision made on the same day, this was to be set up as a training aircraft carrier. The work actually began that December: in Kiel they began to remove the passenger cabins. In the midst of this work, it all came to an abrupt end on the basis of the aforementioned " Fuehrer’s Command. "

The work of planning for the conversion of the uncompleted French heavy cruiser DE GRASSE, which began in April of 1942 under the designation " Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier II ", led to this project being given up, as it was shown to be too expensive in terms of work and materials, was under ever· increasing danger of air attack, and finally, second thoughts about what from the German standpoint was an unsatisfactorily divided power system could not be allayed. At the beginning of February 1943 the planning work was halted.

After the spring of 1943 the navy thus had no possibility of any realizable construction of aircraft carriers.
