hi there, i am furnishing my home come March/April and i need your opinion on IKEA kitchen cabinets. As i plan to rent out the place, i am going for the most basic range of IKEA kitchen cabinets (offhand can't remember what its called). Anyone here can comment on its quality, built, price etc etc? Any problems faced? installation issues? any help appreciated. thanks

My Ikea kitchen cabinet will only be installed tomorrow. Price wise, I think not much different, or maybe Ikea one is little bit more expensive, but depend on the material. For RM8k++ worth ok Ikea KC (including hob, hood, sink), the installation fee is about RM900++, I think it is quite expensive.

Built quality I'm not sure, but I love the fact that it comes with 25years warranty for Faktum. Actually I use Ikea to furnish my house, so my opinion may be little bit biased smile.gif

thor_gentt...photos when ready k?

For me..i find that Ikea was expensive..as I wanted to do my KC..just for a simple plain white ones it was already close to 3.5k..for only the bottom part...so i ended up hiring a kitchen contractor to do my kitchen for 5.5k. For hob and oven..i'll be spending about 2.2K..so totall less than 8k.

Price doesn't inlcude the sink (as I already have that)...just needed the cabinets plus the doors for the area under the sink.

Added on January 19, 2011, 4:46 pmteoanne..but maybe since you are renting out..IKEA could be a better choice

fyi ikea is using the 18mm thickness particleboard for kitchen cabinet, where other builders is using 16mm thickness particleboard. So if budget allow, ikea is a wise choice

I use a normal kitchen cabinet becuz Ikea is fully modular, and not custom. But use Ikea rationell drawers whcih I hear are made in collaboration with Blum. Better to use the rationelle drawers, bcuz the drawer accessories are much cheaper than blum, and u hve so much options.

When u order cabinet outside, the kitchen guy will charge for the drawer set, and those drawers may not be strong enough to hold heavy crockery.

Ikea drawers require a deeper base cabinet of min of 58mm inner depth.

I'm a bit confused by Kubiq. Do they have something in JB, like showroom? Or at least someone to help planning/installation? Are the sample prices with or without doors? (I guess without), how much are they? Couldn't find prices. And how to order? The price on their website looks good, too good to be true tbh. Anyone got experience with them? Have a 9ft kitchen, with a fridge and a front loader washing machine left/right, so only center part and wall cabinet needs to be made.

dont know about johor, perhaps you can give them a call? they don't really help u to plan, but installation yes, separate charge. all the prices are detailed in their online models. you have to click on them to see the pdf of the pricelist. they list down the price of every single thing. and yes it includes doors and counter top. but of course, the cheapest range la. you can choose your own under optional in the website. at their showroom, there are more choices. i'll drop by their showroom within this month and will let u know if i like what i see.

Well, is easy actually, what you need to do is, go IKEA and buy the drawer set, then hire a kitchen cabinet contractor which doing custom made not in modular, then they will totally custom the drawer base on what you give to them.

Ops, forgotten, there you go! the upper cabinet color is actually white (gloss), but it is still covered with blue thin plastic. This picture taken right after installation.

thor_gentt,
for the 25 years warranty i think they put some conditions there better check if it's comfortable with before commit cause there is no such 25 yrs to cover everything else they will gone bankrupt. there is not comparable cause one is modular which is IKEA type another type is customs builts/purpose builts. everthing comes to customs builts there is a higher price to pay but if IKEA KC is more expensive then must rethink ur strategy icon_rolleyes.gif i'm not saying not worth it but at the end is to see ur own purchasing power, well everyone preferences is differ. ignore me if i'm bulshitting. whistling.gif

maxguy,
18mm not neccessarily better than 16mm, but if it's thicker it may look stronger maybe it does (this does'nt end). The more important thing have to consider is the material they used to produce the melamine board/chip board !!! where does the board produce? in which country and in which country they fabricate/manufactured the material? are that country wood is comparable with our tropical woods? no way NO WAY. the wood we are using was harder if not hardest, u can said that our malaysia made board is consists of many kind of wood species but it's still harder than the IKEA ones. again ignore me if i'm bullshitting again. whistling.gif

p.s. you may google around to see what Malaysia used in their melamine board...... for sure i was involved in this industry !!! wink.gif

Actually brand preference is the biggest reason why I choose Ikea, I don't really compare outside VS Ikea, which one is better or not. I go straight to Ikea honestly, 95% of furniture in my current house if from there. Haha, trooling now. Perhaps, for my next house, I'll get custom furniture, tired to go back and forth to Ikea for measurement, ordering, replacing and etc.

Anyway, here is the 25 years warranty all about http://www.ikea.com.my/common/pdf/customer...-2010-EN-BM.pdf

I am now planning to do my dry kitchen.. have checked out a few kitchen guys outside.

Generally I prefer the Ikea rationell drawers, becuz (1) 25 years warranty and (2) they are deeper than blum (52cm vs 45cm) which gives 10% more storage. And, if I need a drawer front, the ikea drawer fronts are only RM40 or RM50 max.

The other day I was at ikea checking out the wall cabinets,, and discover that for a RM700 (120cm wide 30 cm hi) cabinet was fitted with the blum gas hinge. The looks of the hinge was enough to set my heart a flutter, esp after I looked at the chip plak gas hinge from a puchong shop. The 120cmx70cm wall unit is going for RM799.

I am also seriously considering the ikea 120cm sliding door tall unit which is fitted with a heitich sliding door rail. The unit is also fitted with 6x60cm single gallery rationell inner drawers and 2x60cm shallow inner drawers. I think costs will be about RM5,000.

The warranties are a bonus. My autogaate guy was telling me when I asked him how reliable is the folding gate (as I heard of bad stories from others), his answer was, it is costly and troublesome for him to come back if my gate got problem, so it makes more sense for him to do it proper and good for me.

Ikea kitchen cabinets are deeper than normal. Base is 60cm deep (others around 55cm) and wall is 37cm (others 30cm).

IF u have ikea kitchen, u can use all their lovely add-ons. But, they do not custom made and give door to door service that others provide.

There are pros and cons, and thats why I still not yet decided...
