If short distance driving ~ 45mins, I'll prefer vios due to lighter, fuel saver, and pick-up wise is more responsive.
For long distance driving > 2hours, I'll prefer sentra as it is more comfortable (suspension feel softer). |

I drive a sentra, and yes it is more comfortable and I prefer it over Vios due to long distances I travel. On top of it, it is reliable, good build and Tan Chong have served me very well throughout my 5 years of ownership (160k km on the clock). My car is the lifeblood of my salary, no car no pay, thus I need something utterly reliable to ferry me around.
But the same question pops out, it is an old car, QG16 is old tech and you would need to expect the fuel consumption isn't too great by today's tech standard. Good luck deciding... |

My previous Sentra 1.6SG MT, for highway drive I can get around 17-18km/L with 90-110km/h of speed. For city drive, I can get around 11-12.5km/l, if really want to compare with Vios, I think Sentra will has slightly higher FC due to heavier body and bigger displacement engine. But if you really want to compare with current technology, then I think take Sylphy/Altis as examples, I found these 2 models have good FC with heavier body and bigger displacement engine.

My sis in-law is using the Sylphy but I'm not so rich so my budget can only afford either VIOS or Sentra. I know got other cars like the Honda City but my research seems to show that the gear box for the City is very notorious for causing problem. I don't usually use my car for long distance traveling so the VIOS is probably a good choice... Is it true that the VIOS has high maintenance? Seems like everyone here is in favor of the Sentra. Anyone here got any experience with the VIOS?

Vios also not bad if you mean for dity driving, as for the maintenance, I don't think it will be very high for Vios. I think you can make some survey about the maintenance cost, but do remember, send back to UMW for service will surely expensive than service outside, but within warranty period, you have no choice but send back to UMW. Do becareful about the current Toyota products, heard their quality isn't very good nowadays.

If u r young and love 2 drive fast, sentra is not ya option, IMHO. If u wanna settle down with less problem, then N16.
Currently TC launched an Impul version, more sportier than the Sport Version |

(my mom ask them why the labor price quite high) |

what i can say is once u start buying a nissan, u'll forever be stuck with nissan..this applies to some people...i'm not saying everyone..no offence..
when the time comes where u wanna change to a new car, it'll be hard to get a different kind of car because nissan dealers will buy back ur car at a higher price provided u buy another nissan from them... i say this due to my experience in car line... regarding vios, most of it is okay...just that, for me, i don't like the meters being at the middle... |

I've actually gone through and had a look at all the car models I can afford for a budget of about 80k. For the most part, the discussion keeps coming back to Nissan and Toyota since the quality is the best among all the manufacturers according to most users users.
I agree the Sentra looks rather dated but I hear it's very reliable and has a lot of power compared to the Vios. The Vios looks very modern but lacks power and not as spacious. Either way, I will be taking both for a test drive this weekend and we'll see if I can make up my mind based on the feel of the car. |

if in term of 80k, u can afford new FL Forte EX with 6 spd now, and Ford fiesta sedan. Instead of Old tech Sentra, u can choose newer model = Forte EX, and instead of VIOS, u can choose Fiesta Sedan, both cost less than 80k, yet i think interest now still low, increasing soon, plz make ur choice.

if u want new car in the 80k region, there are tons of choices now, why choose a very old model (sentra) and a very overpriced ugly piece of shxt (vios)? i highly recommend ford fiesta (although the interior is a bit crap, but hey, cars in this region all has crap interior). look, i drive a nissan, and i dared say sentra is a super reliable car, but it's old. not that vios is a bad car, but for that price (and specs) it's kinda hard considering why u should buy it when other competitors gives such a good bargain, even the forte wins it hands down on everything. seriously, go for a test drive on every brand before considering what car u wanna buy, 80k is a lot of dough u know.

Thanks for mentioning the Fiesta, actually I took a look at it after you mentioned it and I like it a lot. The only thing is that I asked my agent about it and he mention that Ford usually got problem with resale value and parts also a bit hard to find since Ford isn't all that popular in Malaysia.

The only thing is that I asked my agent about it and he mention that Ford usually got problem with resale value and parts also a bit hard to find since Ford isn't all that popular in Malaysia. ford is currently fighting aggressively for market share, just like naza / kia is doing, parts won't be a problem anymore. plus ford is one of the most reliable brands out there. 2nd hand value isn't very good, but u r not going to change car every 3 years right? depreciation is definitely a pain in the arse in the first 3 years, but after that the price will stabilize and ur wallet won't feel so hurt if u sell the car. plus nowadays the younger generation is changing towards European or Korean cars, the demand for brand H and T will start to drop in a few years, so the prices of these H and T brands will definitely go down, but not by much. Don't waste your chance of getting a good car just because u r scared of depreciation, if u play safe and buy a safe brand like the vios, u'll regret it when one of your friends buys a fiesta. this is so true because few of my friends told me (half a year ago) they should have waited for a couple of months to get the fiesta, and now all they drive is a boring+expensive vios or city.go for test drive, u'll be amazed how this car handles, it is the most planted car in it's segment. I'm not talking about street racing or any kind of fast driving, i'm talking about stability and cornering ability. i once followed a fiesta sedan going down cameron highlands and it is way too fast for a car of this segment, i've never seen anyone drive a vios or city or even altis / accord drive this fast, it is unbelievably stable at the corners doing more than 90kmph. i seldom praise car of this segment (+-80k) because all of them are rubbish at handling and rubbish on power and responsiveness. this is the only car in this price range that gets my approval. seriously again, go for a test drive P.S: i'm NOT a ford salesman This post has been edited by stormlcc: Jan 14 2011, 03:14 PM |

My Vote.
Vios J. Manual 69k? Auto 73k? Pick Manual if you can. Top speed can reach 200km/r. Yes is a very light car... but.. City or Sentra or Latio also cannot reach. This shows that the engine maybe looks lower hp on paper, but in fact is kind of fast for such a small car. |

hoho, add wings to the Vios J , the car will fly.. hahaha... 200km/h, it is really fast. And it is really light. No doubt, Vios is the best car in the entire region you can buy with your money. plus the car saves you more money compare to other cars in the market.
I hope one day the car will cost more than RM100k and everyone will stop buying. I predict this year Honda City will touch a whopping 95K once the release a new face lift. Same goes with Vios. But Vios will probably cost about 94K sports version. Wow, now Honda and Toyota are rich peoples car. those with mid income have to get a Peugeot 207, Fiesta and Kia Forte. Anyway, Tan Chong Is uncle company so you get uncle technology lah. 1000 years old technology apply today in the 21st century. But that is what Malaysian's deserve, because we never argue and show our love of cars in ourselves when buying one. When we buy a car Resale value is number one on the list, then maintenance, then fuel consumption. Which ever come first these 3 criteria is in the mind of us. Anyway if you got Balls get Forte, 207 and Forte, Worth while buy, No balls, get a Sentra( cheap cheap car, ) and Vios or Honda city. Jokes a side. Take the Vios, no one will blame or comment you when you buy that car. |

My previous Sentra, if I not mistaken, it ran around 380k without any problem, no single "makan minyak hitam" problem at all. But that was my company car, now sold already and my company already purchased new Altis in 08. I still miss the Sentra a lot because of much better "driving drama" if compare with current Altis. And Altis durability is still lag behind the Sentra, at least I have sent in UMW to fix the dashboard and rear suspension more than 5 times, and the problem will come back after a few weeks And with thevios, you can run till 200k km also no problems. |

Went to the Toyota and Ford showrooms over the weekend. Was really taken by the Ford Fiesta but the sales guy wasn't really friendly. No bargaining, no promotion, nothing. Just want to sell me the car at retail price so not very happy and left the showroom. Toyota sales guy very friendly and offer me a lot of free stuff like RM1,500 rebate on down payment, free tinting and limited edition car display. Lower interest too. Just for that damn tempted to buy the Vios but Fiesta is really sleek and classy. If anyone know a good Ford salesman that can give me a good deal, let me know!
