i think its due to that stock kernel is on JFS while speedmod kernel is on EXT4 ... i am not totally sure as thats my theory, maybe u can ask hardcore at the same time wait for someone here with much more technical experience to explain ...  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
stock one uses RFS. speedmod doesn't change the file system but you can choose the filesystem you want in recovery mode (JFS,ext4)

I once used JFS filesystem and it was super smooth, smoother than ext4. You guys might want to try it. Just disable any lagfix you have(if you have one) by going to recovery mode, and then select JFS.

QUOTE(Bugeca @ Jan 13 2011, 02:06 PM)
When you flashed the stock PDA file, did you remove the two files inside the PDA (factoryfs.rfs & param.lfs)? Only zImage is needed to have the stock kernel. The other like factoryfs.rfs is the ROM which definitely will wipe your phone.
*
I don't know where he got hardcore's kernel that contains factoryfs.rfs but if he goes to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756. Download the CWM version (speedmod-kernel-k12l-500hz-CWM.zip) or odin version. Flash it. Both conatins zimage but not factoryfs.rfs & param.lfs

Guys...sorry for being such a n00b...but the speedmod kernel here does not require that the phone be rooted right? Prerequisites for this are basically having Odin, the kernel and being able to go into download mode right?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
*
True, no need to be rooted. You can choose to go with odin route or CWM route. Are you on official firmware?

Guys / Gals,

I was thinking abt installing Hardcore's Speedmod.

Currently, i hv XXJPY + Darky's 8.0 with voodoo enabled.

How do i install Hardcore's Speedmod over XXJPY + Darky's 8.0??

TIA
*
Disable voodoo and tweaks that you may have enabled first. I think it is a good practice to disable them. Then download the odin or cwm version, put it in sdcard and flash away.

I have just switched from SO kernel to speedmod just now while typing this smile.gif

Thanks for the reply...yup...I'm on official firmware...which means I'll prob need to do the 3 button combo fix first before I try the speedmod
*
If you can go to download mode (volume down + home + power button), no need to do the fix.
You also must backup /efs folder. store it somewhere safe (your computer, dropbox, etc)

Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 and understand it.

Hi sifus,

I'm planning to flash to Darky's v8.0.

However, I would like to format my Internal SD card to start from fresh. A normal Factory reset will NOT clean up Internal SD Card.

If i select Format Internal SD card, eveything will be wipe out, right? But will my phone boot up after that?

Where do I put Darky's ROM? In my external SD card?

What about CWM update.zip file? In external SD card as well?

Will my 3 button combo into recovery mode still works if the Update.zip file is no longer in Internal SD card after a reformatting?

Really worried I screw up and brick my SGS...

Help needed.

Thanks
*
First and foremost, it is extremely hard to brick galaxy s

Always put CWM update.zip and darkyy rom in internal sdcard. if you put it on ext sd card, it will located on /sdcard/sd folder - it won't work.

I used to enabled it but not now because I find it to drain battery alot. Like some one said, try rebooting and install the BLN control app

QUOTE(thereefster @ Jan 14 2011, 10:54 PM)
i just enabled lagfix on my sgs, nothing changed...maybe it just me..
*
Which lagfix? Using ext4 instead of samsung's stock RFS will give you extra read/write speed that comes from inherent advantage of ext4. There will be no difference in smoothness (like swiping the homescreen left and right) but for app that uses a lot of read/write, database(like newsrob), installing app(when restoring app from titanium), you'll see huge difference.

It used to be that ext4 drains more battery and wears more than RFS. But as someone here quoted hardcore's statement about the optimization he made to ext4. If that is true, there is no reason to not use ext4.

yes my sgs oni can last to 8 hrs oni.. i heard from this thread, some of them can last for 2 days?  blink.gif

ive check my task manager 1.51 there is no running apps.. but the RAM used always approx 240 / 399 mb? is that normal?

im vr2 curios rite now.. can last oni 8 hrs without doing anything.. what if i make a call or else..  rclxub.gif

btw... where can i find the dxjpa modem? did the 2 days guy also use this modem?

really need some sifu advise here...  biggrin.gif
*
All I can say is recalibrate your battery - drain, full charge delete battery stats using sgs tools app.
Go to Settings > Applications > Running Services to see what background service is running
Install os monitor too see which app is causing the cpu load.
Try different modem. Different area gives different radio strength, thus better energy efficiency. Some modem like JPP may be better but consumes a lot of power. This is a guide from pele78. Try different modems and see which one suits you the best.

very very strange issue u got there my friend,as for me my batt life can last for nearly 3 days with few calls and sms and also check for app update in market,FYI im on DXJPE with speedmod kernel and i recommend u to use ES task manager and place the widget on ur homescreen and always tap on it b4 u lock ur screen,as for me my min free ram is always 140++ mb when phone is idle and when i clear my task using ES task manager widget i surely get min 190++ mb free ram, just download it from market and u don't have to do any settings...trust me it really works and helps ur batt life
*
excessive use of task manager may lead to more battery usage. only use it for misbehaving app. It helps for short term only. I used to install autokiller(not a task manager, but it manages the minimum limit of free ram for froyo) to increase the smoothness of the phone. I don't know how relevant it is now since the advent of speedmod and others. I don't think many people in xda uses it anymore. Maybe because we got bigger ram from speedmod (339MB)

QUOTE(jujx @ Jan 15 2011, 02:14 AM)
SGS is much tougher than you know, its super hard to brick if you have 3 button recovery
*
Very true. Even if it happens, in xda, they use hairdryer and some homemade jig to go to download mode when their phone bricked.

RFS - Samsung crappy file system
EXT4 - build upon the reliable and most used in linux - EXT3 file system. It is open source, one of the better speed (at least in benchmark) and heavily developed.

EXT4 FTW

Guys...

It has been 1 week since I flash my SGS to Darky's v8.0 Gingerbread Edition Wipe using Odin3 v1.3 and 512.pit. My SGS show:

Firmware version: 2.3.1
Baseband version: I9000XXJPY
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 wasted@box #8

Its damn fast and Im really happy compare to the stock firmware.

But Ive two issue:

1. Battery drain fast: Its been a week now. The longest time it can last is 17 hours.

I use my SGS mostly for scrolling like nobody business, play angry birds, browse internet, sms or chat and that's about it. I seldom download app as my app now are more than enuff (for the time being, hehe).
Ive try a lot of way (including the FAQs way) to calibrate the battery but so far.... no improvement.

2. GPS useless.

I have tried the FAQs as well....but still cannot use. I can only use the google maps only which just like what i've used on my Nokia E66.

Hope the sifus can help me here.

Cheers!  icon_rolleyes.gif

Firstly, you know you are using Froyo, now gingerbread right wink.gif
I think 17hrs with thhat kind of usage is quite ok. What do you guys think?

there's various answer, but i normally do this

Full charge tol 100%, leave it on charger for another half an hour. Delete batterystat

Drain till 0%, then delete batterystat
*
But the new froyo will cut off power once the phone is fully charged. It will drop to 99% even though the power cable is still plugged in. So I think just wait 5 minutes before deleting batterystats

I want to change the bootanimation screen on 8.1 Darky and I installed Root Explorer 2.13.3 but cannot mount RW. So now I can't replace the file.
icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif

And after I installed 8.1 Darky, my APN setting is gone.
So I follow the guide from 1st page, but still the same I cannot get the connection.

Can I straight flash back to 8.0 Non-wipe version??
*
If you have "terminal emulator" app (or similar ones) installed on the phone, open it and type
& su (press enter)
#remount (press enter)

You'll have the /system writable
If you know some linux command kungfu, you don't need to pay app like root explorer smile.gif

# cd /system/app (changes directory)
#ls (lists down all the files)
#rm /system/app/whatever.apk (deletes it)
#cp /system/app/whatever.apk /system/app/whatever.apk.bak (or you can rename the apk to .apk.bak. bak files basically means it is uninstalled but you may it back later)
#mv /sdcard/apkIwant.apk /system/app/apkIwant.apk (copies the apk from sdcard to /system/app folder

Or you can use adb. It is easier because you can copy and paste rather than typing on the phone. You need to install android sdk and get its adb first. I use "wifi adb" app so that I can adb wirelessly w/o usb cable. Once phone is connected wirelessly, use the command in this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843019

Is darkyy's website seems to be slow? I think too many people are accessing his website. Maybe you guys should check out other roms too. You should try Doc and Stefunel's kitchen. Unlike darkyy's which packages everything for you, doc's kitchen lets you choose which app, modem, themes you want. It's really cool.

doc's is one of the oldest rom cooker in the forum. Kitchen: http://romkitchen.org/sgs_v1/ Forum link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703

Where?

Anyhow, these rom cookers do this in their free time. They are not paid with a salary. Even though they do not ask for donations, people are giving them and this them the motivation to continue forward.

If one doesn't like a rom, just switch. There are other pro cookers like doc and nitr8.

hi all, need to know something on battery??

been using SGS 2.2.1 Darky V8.0 for 1.5 week...
weird thing was... after full charge (phone on standby mode) and unplug my battery percentage drop to 96% - 99%.

but if i full charge while phone off my battery remains 100%...

i've already try to delete battery statistic, charging after full battery usage (auto off)...

any suggestion... what else i need to do...
*
It is a new feature of froyo. Once the phone is fully charged, it well disconnect by itself to prevent over-charging.

Jz out of curiosity, downloaded Darky 8.1 as wanna see how the bootanimation. I must say.... THAT is absolutely CHILDISH and Downgrade the SGS... it is not because of Transformer, it is because of the DARKY ROM wording, Custom ROM Guru been in the field for so long, i have not seen DOC design something which put his name there.

Would try to get a snatch of it if i can find another camera to do it.

No wonder some of u who upgraded to 8.1 complaint about the bootanimation.
*

[/quote]
FWIW, it is just a boot animation. The only downside is maybe the ugly bootanimation will not appease your non-android-using friends. If you want to show off, you'll want a cool one right?

BTW, in my personal opinion and observation, his attitude does indeed a bit childish. That is why I avoid his rom and go to other pro and experienced rom cookers.

Bottom line, if you don't like it, change the boot animation or switch rom. It takes no more than 30 minutes.

speedmod k12m is out ... might wan to check it out ..
yea one of them is me, and that was while i was using official firmwares of DXJG4 and DXJPA, even last up to 3days+ ... but for custom rom no, coz alot of customization and optimization implemented, for the speed u have to sacrifice something else ...
17hrs for me is good, and usually my phone can last even longer .... brightness set to low, no background sync, disabled data network, super duper heavy texting, roughly an hr calls daily ...
its li-ion battery, just charge whenever there is a plug and charger with u, it is safe to do so ... but dont let the battery to go under 10% which is unhealthy for the li-ion batteries ... lazy to dig out the thread about li-ion batterys, sorry dont have the source ..

1st....Wow..just left the forum for a day and its already 39 pages. notworthy.gif

Alvinz....
after i install speedmod k12l, battery is getting better. Now can last for 20+ hours... Thanks anyway for the advise on how to maintain the battery.
Btw, no wonder ur batt can last up to 2 days....So I got the wrong info then...

Enjoying my SGS so much...Luckily I made the right choice for not buying Iphone4.

Cheers

can you give me the link for the JPP modem? is it gonna make any changes in terms of connection like wifi and call signals, or only the battery life differs?
*
I don't know if the improvement is made by switching to speedmod alone or together with the modem. I used JPP modem with earlier version of speedmod. I can say that I got better call quality and gps navigation than JPA modem.

Link to JPP and other modems here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...postcount=14434

Although it is from Doc's thread, I use it for insanity rom and it works just fine. Should work with darkyy's too.

For radio signal and gps performance, see these threads:
Radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...postcount=11945
GPS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...postcount=13293

Depending on the region/area, you may get different performance. So my advice is to try all of the modems and see which one suits you best. YMMV.

I've been following all the latest hardcore's kernel and up to K12O I stopped and used super optimised instead. Gameplay begin to be smoother, UI is smoother I didn't know it can go smoother but it did. Especially gameloft's games, don't know why since last time hardcore kernel already have probs with gameloft games for me.
*
Maybe, there was a bit lag for a few hours of usage. But even now, there were few occasions where I experienced some delay. About to test playing asphalt now.

update: absolutely no problem with asphalt on hardcore M version. But I have applied ext4 lagfix. On SO, I didn't apply any lagfix.

No need to rename. When you are in recovery mode, choose "install zip from sdcard" and then "choose zip from sdcard"

Well basically both also requires u to use odin. So either is he installing 2e recovery or trying to install modem requires him to go through odin. But its true, flashing with 2e enabled is much easier (but still not fool proof).

You are right, both needed odin. But once you are on 2e recovery, no need to use odin anymore except when you want to flash back to eclair JM8 or something.

bloody hell... that means ive wasted 2.6k for a phone that doesnt even work properly  doh.gif
damn... i will never trust reviews again .....
The phone got so much good reviews and award that i believe it should be good...
And they kept saying iphone anthena problem ... konon the galaxy s got more problem pula..

I can name three things where samsung went wrong with sgs:
1. Lag
2. Gps
3. Build quality

- SGS had a horrible lag and sluggish performance due to usage of poorly written filesystem (RFS). It is now greatly improved in the froyo 2.2.1

- samsung uses a second rate gps chip. However, mine works so so. I got 20m accuracy on the road. Remember, a gps lock means nothing if the phone cannot maintain connection. To truly test the gps, you'll have to test it on the road. The latest 2.2.1 also has helped a bit.
I use voice navigation feature in the phone and it flawlessly helped me to to my destination. Unfortunately, I required a bit of fixing to achieve the best possible gps performance. You wouldn't care what chartcross' gps status says if the phone can give you what you want - navigation, right?
FYI, Samsung nexus s has a better gps chip. Probably they have learned a lesson. Anyhow, such problem shouldn't have existed in such a premium phone. Same goes to iphone4 with its external antenna.

- Plastic case? They shave off few grams and make it light. Some people do not like it because it will feel cheap when holding the phone. But I do not mind it at all. To me, the super amoled screen is just way too gorgeous too look at and it outweighs the cheap plastic.

However, I don't think you've wasted 2.6k on the phone. Try and learn what it can do and you'll be surprise!
Also, don't take mainstream reviews with a pinch of salt. What you should listen to are user reviews.

Or go to Settings > About Phone. Baseband version shows what modem you have.

Depends on what flash. If flash advertisement, ok. But if the whole website is flash, then it will be sluggish.

SO is it hardware issue or wat?

damn ... i kept hearing some say lock fast or slow... but no one ever give me solution
Is it the firmware problem??
*
It is gps chip (hardware) issue. which kind of modem you are having also affects gps performance. I have posted a link on a review made by pele78 in xda developers. It is just a few pages back. Try each one of the modem and see the result.

edit addon: I'd like to re-emphasise. Fast lock means nothing if the phone cannot give you turn-by-turn direction. Try different modem and see which one works best for you.

If wifi issues, then it is the modem.
