clarity of tone, evenness across 4 strings, quick respond to bow, comfortable playing.

the rest are subjective.

never buy a violin with the expectation that violin not so good now but it'll sound better in the future. good violin will sound good from the very first day.

OIC. Thanks your information and advice. I like your saying that "Never buy a violin with the expectation that violin not so good now but it'll sound better in the future. Good violin will sound good from the very first day".

For quick response, do good strings play an important role?

I was doing some researches yesterday. Are you familiar with Scott Shu-Kun Cao's violins? Are they good?

No. The new violin will be my third violin. I think I am not happy with my second violin. I didn't do much survey before buying it. I tried some Chinese violins recently which are much cheaper than mine but they produce better sound.

yes strings will affect, but only a little. start with dominant, it'll tell you a lot about your violin. violin with quick response will respond well to most brands of strings.

nope, no experiences with Scott Cao's violins.

also don't exclude violins with cheaper price tag. more expensive violin doesn't mean a better violin.

Ok. Thanks.

There are so many choices from China and Europe. It is very difficult to choose the best with my budget... :-)

it's more difficult when you stretch your budget to RM40k - too many choices of fine violins around the world.

Try to do comparison between Euro Music & House of Violin.
Dont think the budget first,
go and try, make the decision after that.
Nowaday, some of modern violin with cheap price also can produce very good sounds if seasoned well.

I know the shop. I always buy my strings there. The owner promoted china violin to me before. He said the china violins quality is very good nowadays.

So, do you think the owner is trustworthy?

I read from many web sites that Scott Cao's violins are very good in sounds and are priced reasonably. What do you think?

I am planning to buy a new violin... ;-)

scott cao violin got various model.i read somewhere only model 8 series above is handmade but if u wan hand made by him, it should be 5 figure. other model all just brand under him so basically "scott cao violin is good or not" is hard to answer.haha. "good or not" u try thn u know.individual preference.

back to ur question, u bought string from thr few times, u should know him more thn me la. i bought some item from there so far so good, reasonable price.
no matter how many violin u got or wat, few year later u will still upgrade. so just get somethg u happy with it now, and start to play.

China violin, for my personal opinion(learn from pass), better get with good maker signature, maker u know him or u at least read about him...Why? because at least it won;t run far. it maybe expensive but at least u know the quality is there. i know lot ppl say important is sound, label not important, i agree. if u really can choose violin from sound thn go ahead. if not, to be secure, get from a known maker. scott cao is not a maker in ur case but is the brand only.

some shop put in thier own label and put their price. the seller can talk like the violin is the best, but , no comment la. i still thk best not to choose this type of violin.. or not one day u found out it is actually a low quality violin and rebrand, u will regret.

What Chienx said is very true.

I know a violin dealer who told me a great deal about the violin market here. Bottom line is, most people who buy violins, do not know how to listen to the instrument, they do not know what to look for, what to listen for and what to test when buying a violin. Worst, most dealers here do not allow "trial periods" like some reputable dealers do overseas. Meaning, they do not allow you to take the violin home to test for a few days or a few weeks to see if it really suits your needs.
When I was young too, my parents bought a violin for me. The dealer claimed it was made in Czechoslovakia handmade etc etc. very good!
But I later found out that they were duped, it was actually a china violin.

Moral of the lesson, get a branded, trusted violin from a familiar dealer whom you can trace and chase if you find out he duped you. XD. When you reach the level where you know what to listen for, what to expect out of a good violin, then you can spend 5 figures looking for a good one.

Hi guys,

how do you guys bow semiquaver with the wrist while keeps the bow vertical to the violin at the same time?

When I swing my wrist, my bow will go out of place like the car wiper.
