1 piece back is rarer than 2 piece back... thats why people normally prefer one piece board. but in terms of sound...they are more or less the same although i heard one piece sounds nicer since young but it still depends on the craftsmanship. btw... I will prefer a one piece back although both my violins are 2 piece back.

actually, in my experiences, for the lower price range of mass produced violins, 1 piece back seems to always give a slightly better sound as in not so offensive to the ear or being mellow or rounder sounding, but very often, lower power (volume). it's not entirely a fact, but it seems so, at least from what i've sampled.

Grade 5 sure will be 45 minutes and above. standard average tutor... hmm... chambers music is Rm130 for 30 minutes per month. That means about RM195 per 45 minutes for a month... there are cheaper ones like around RM160 for 45 minutes a month.... so around Rm150-RM200 average I would say.

And suddenly, the cliches of all cliches has happened. I was tuning my violin when my A string had snapped.

And with no experience in stringing a violin whatsoever, what kind of strings can you recommend me to buy and where can I restring it? Thanks in advance!

1. Pirastro Tonica RM120 per set. Chamber Music, Sg Wang. 5% disc if pay by cash.
2. Dominants RM149 per set. Euro Music, Jln Imbi or Chamber Music. But temporary out of stock.
I restrung my violin by myself, quite easy & no problem with that. For tuning the string, you need a tuner.
you can adjust each pitch by tightening or lossening each string by tuning its corresponding peg.
You might need to pluck the string repeatedly to check the sound of your string to the note you're tuning too.
If the pitch is very close, use the fine tuner to make a smaller adjustment.
always be careful not to tune a string too high or too quickly, especially the E string.
You may ask for assisting from the shop to help you in this matter.

Ah, thanks a lot. Quite expensive strings I see. My A string broke when I was tuning it with a tuner. I turned it too much until it broke because the tuner kept showing it was either a G# or a less-than-perfect A. Usually, I tighten it because that usually solves the problem... When I loosen it, it becomes a G#, so I thought the only way was to tighten it. Damn, was I wrong.

1st you just turn a bit & pluck to hear the pitch,
sometime you need to bowing as well to get exact pitch;
2nd if still between 2 pitches, try fine tuner, if still doesnt work, loosen the peg & tighten the string again for few times. And try again.

I changed my string last week, because it still new strings, always out of tune. This evening, i tune my violin nearly half hour for D & A strings.
It take some time for tuning.

But i didnt exactly follow the tuner.
When the pitch is near, after adjusting fine tuner,
i'll playing scales, or a song to hear the notes,
if sounds just right,
i'll stop adjusting.
This's my experience ^,<

If you are still a lower grade student and had been using student's strings.... RM5 china string will do... they are durable, cheap, economic and you feel no remorse when you accidently broke the string you are trying to tune...buy cheap strings to learn tuning first if you are just learning.

You don't tune using only the pegs. Do use fine tuners if your violin has any. Just like ryan said

I tune like you do. Though I don't have any tuner. I sit on my piano bench and hit the note I wanted to tune and listen to the frequency lol.
I don't rely much on tuner...

this's great you own a piano.
My teacher even didnt teach how to tune.
So, i go to try myself once i got my violin.
Tuning really take time.
If follow tuner, the strings might be too tigh
or i call it 'sharp'.
I used to tune with tuner some way,
and play the songs.
Just hear the sound....
I read a lot of article that they recommend to use our
ears to tuning the pitch.
It really need experience for that.

Guys... KL Pac will have a string ensemble soon. Here are some of the details I got from their facebook.

Time: Saturday, April 9 at 8:00pm - April 10 at 3:00pm

Location:
Pentas 2, klpac
The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, Sentul Park, Jalan Strachan off Jalan Ipoh, 51100
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

"klpac String Ensemble debuts with FANTASTIKAL STRINGS"

The stirring sound of the strings will fill the air this April as the klpac String Ensemble debuts with Fantastikal Strings under the baton of Dr. Takahisa Ota. Fantastikal is the word indeed to describe the youthful energy from the 40-strong ensemble and the lovely mix of well-loved folk songs, classical favourites as well as contemporary numbers.

The wonderful thing about f...olk songs is that each paints a different a picture of the land it comes from and carries with it a different tale of the people there. The ensemble will be bringing you on a journey around the world with songs from Emerald Isle, another name that Ireland is sometimes referred to because of its lush countryside, to the remote village in Southern China where the Yao tribe resides and then on to Mexico, Japan, Russia and even America.

Fantastikal Strings’ exciting programme does not end with the selection of folk songs. There will also be familiar classical pieces such as Kanon, Eine kleine Nachtmusik and themes from The New World Symphony. The ensemble will also be playing the theme song from the blockbuster hit Titanic as well as an old favourite popularised by the late Teresa Teng, Moon Represents My Heart. With such an interesting repertoire, the concert is sure to entertain and engage music lovers of all ages.

The idea of having a String Ensemble was planted back in 2010. The klpac Orchestra, then, had already been up and running for the past four years, nurturing and training musicians as well as holding regular concerts. However, with more and more players picking up an instrument at a very young age, klpac decided it was time to reach out to these young musicians. This will only be the first of many more exciting concerts from the klpac String Ensemble under the guidance of the capable and patient hands of Dr. Ota, or Ota-san as he is affectionately known, with the help of fellow trainer Shigeki Saito.

Stay tuned for more wonderful music coming your way this 2011.
