WELCOME TO MOUNTAIN BIKING HEAVEN V18
user posted image
GUIDELINES TO MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL ETIQUETTE

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE SPECIFIC TRAILS

PERSONAL SAFETY
-Wear a brain bucket(yes..that's a helmet) whenever you ride
-Do not travel into remote areas without informing others
-Ride within your capabilities.Ensure that if you want to push your limits, you buddies are around to support you.
-Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares.

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS(NON RIDERS)
-Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because people judge all cyclist by my actions
-Give way to motorised trail users, ie. motor cross bikes etc, because generally we will end up worse off in an accident.
-Alert others when approaching.Get a bell, or "Excuse me" works quite well

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS
-Riders have the right of way.If you are pushing your bike, leave the riding line open for others to go past.
-Rider up hill has the right of way.
-Allow faster riders to past

SPEED
-Approach turns and bends in aniticipation that there's someone there
-Make your presence known when approaching someone or any turns

IMPACT ON THE TRAIL
-Leave the wildlife and fauna alone.Magic mushrooms are bad for you.
-Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible.
-Dont't take short cuts over /around technical sections. If you can't ride it,walk it.
-Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where people are afraid to maintain the trails.
-Do not litter.Take out whatever you take in.
Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with you

FUN
-You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cogs, and make good friends on your ride.
-Develop sense of humor. Some people say it's good for the soul.

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-IN/bike-index/

Trance - XC/Trail - HTA @ 69.5 / STA @ 73.5
Reign - AM - HTA @ 67.5 / STA @ 73.5
Faith - FR - HTA @ 66.7 / STA @ 63.0
Glory - DH - HTA @ 65.5 / STA @ 65.7

IMHO, climbing wise, steeper HTA is better than slacker HTA. The front won't wonder off that much. Also the slacker the STA, the further back the weight distribution when seated. The more rear biased, the lighter the front end in relation to the rear end. Bad for climbing.

Also, the more travel there is, the more bob it will behave, considering the same type of suspension linkage design (Maestro), without any sort of platform damping assistance.

And lastly, usually weight will be heavier as well for longer travel bikes. More weight = harder to climb.

Just my two cents.

In stock form, trance comes with 120mm with the HTA of 69.5. Quite a lot of people change to a 140mm, with an estimated HTA of 68.5?

you could still get stock talas(140) on 2009 models but not 2010.they come in 120mm as mentioned by kaizer. why not consider a stumpy fsr ? trend for future trail bikes looks set for 140mm stock

if im not mistaken.. warranty are only covered if the item is bought by an authorized reseller.. other than that.. you cant do much.. maybe an authorized reseller can help out with the warranty but im not so sure about that

by right they should.. they should back up their product if anything happens to it in a specific time frame.. unless they didnt say anything about the warranty when you purchase it from them..

ive seen sellers and even serious bicycle shops that does not want to cover any warranty if the product is defective when you use it just because they dont want to go through the hassle of sending it back to the manufacturer.. which is rather sad.. and my family is a victim of this as well..

IMHO, best to test ride a REIGN 1st lor... 6incher if wan to perform like HT or even a 4incher on the incline takes alot of tuning on the shox. 5incher is the best compromise for both ups and downs.

What you're saying is the adjustable travel fork, which for a well setup bike and a change of riding posture will null the need of it. I just changed from a HT with a 140mm to a 5" frame on the same fork. On my 1st ride with the otai's here last week. No problem with the front end lifting up.

Suspension is a very dynamic subject, which I had just experience 1st hand. LOL

Comparing the same fork on two different chassis, I ended up having much lesser pressure at the front now on the full susser.

The idea is, on a HT the pivoting point is at the rear wheel hub, any suspension movement will result in front end dive coupled with a steeper HTA. That's where the ENDO feeling comes from.

On a FS, the pivoting point is at the BB area, where both front and rear wheel's moving independently. So on every bump, you'll experience lower BB height, shorter chainstay (in general terms, actually depends on the rear suspension linkage) and a slacker HTA as well.

So on a FS, the feeling is more planted, bike's more stable.

I ridden a REIGN on a parking lot before, sure it's fun for it's plushness, but pedaling is a chore. I can only imagine riding it on a real uphill. It gave me a 'too much bike' feeling for me.

totally agree! Just go to utube and look for Jinya Nishiwaki's video. He's riding a HT down Whistler on a daily basis! As for Bro Chameleon, he's damn good at Kiara riding his HT. He's going down places where I choose to walk-a-bike, both ups and downs. thumbup.gif

Ps: All the otai here really mountain goat wan. Sibeh quick going up and down. I think they all felt asleep when I'm busting lungs and balls.

I initially wanted to go AM HT route, but chicken out and gotten a FS. I thought that it will give me a better confidence as that's what I'm severely lacking at the moment. When the time comes, will surely get another HT for AM. That's where the real skill is.

Added on January 10, 2011, 10:19 pmHeard from bike shop saying FOX if got problem, gotta wait atleast 1~2m to get it fix under warranty. Notebly the common weak point is the seal. Alot of FOX user upgraded to Enduro seals and all is good.

RS is better as turnaround time is around 1~2weeks, since the distributor is local.

Itu wa dengar cerita saja la... No experience on both personally as it's outta my league.

it's another way round; fox have authorize fixer (bikepro) but RS in spore. But bikepro will have service charge if u didnt buy from them. enduro seals take ages to run in so it's not popular.

Just curious, if Bikepro's the authorized, then they should be providing the service for free, right? Or buyer must go though proper channel, that is via the shop they purchase it from?

If the shox is not from the authorized distribution channel, then it's understandable for them not to layan. Every business is hurt by grey imports.

2010 reign has got some lower linkage issues if i am not mistaken. they break under stress when the bike takes a big hit/drop as the lower linkage hits the FD not sure if this will be redesigned.read this from the internet.

it depends on what you want to do.from the sounds of it you want something that can climb and descend with more confidence.you would probably enjoy a trail bike.

but if you are more of a descender, probably an all mountain like reign.well, that's how i chose my bike though.i still have a hardtail used for XC events but rocky places? a full sus for maximum pleasure...so its really about comfort. HT's climb better and FS descends better.FS designs are now quite good where they reduce the bob at the rear triangle.

howabout a Maverick??

Snaps, I think it's the REIGN X only with ISCG tabs that has the issue. Due to the chainstay being redesign to accommodate the ISCG mount? Not sure, just browsed through.

honestly, if i were you ill get myself a HT before going to a full sus... this is for me to polish my skills on a HT so that when i decide to go serious, ill get better bike.. FS as a first bike makes you lazy and makes mistakes a lot.. IMHO la.. no offence on this.. based on my own experience owning a NS surge and haro X7.. i actually went faster on the HT than the FS.. hahaha

my fam has used both RS n FOX.. both pretty much has the same turnaround provided that they have the replacement parts in stock..

it depends on what you want to do.from the sounds of it you want something that can climb and descend with more confidence.you would probably enjoy a trail bike.

but if you are more of a descender, probably an all mountain like reign.well, that's how i chose my bike though.i still have a hardtail used for XC events but rocky places? a full sus for maximum pleasure...so its really about comfort. HT's climb better and FS descends better.FS designs are now quite good where they reduce the bob at the rear triangle.

howabout a Maverick??

mm..... yup.... thanks for ur advice... actually here we got a trail that have to ride up really hard (asphalt) then when descend can choose either ordinary road or... DH route usually will see all the DH kaki with full armor go down really fast ... i already try the down hill part using my HT & feel nice but have to do it really extra carefull or it will become disaster...& maybe i already change my tyre to 2.4 ...so that i feel it absorb abit the bump ..... but really dangerous coz the tail part keep lompat lompat like hantu puchong although i keep my weight very far behind ( luckily i got xs for my frame) to keep the bike from endo.... thats y im have the feeling to take another bike either trance or reign.... really hard to make decision from the diffrent of 1 inch rear travel laugh.gif

but really appreciate all the advice from u all from here notworthy.gif

reign can still climb but not as effecient as a HT or trail bike.if you like going fast then reign would be a better option but you will be sacrificing some climbing capability due to the slacker HA.

maxguy use to run a reign and climbs like a goat....perhaps he can give you an advice or two.

honestly, if i were you ill get myself a HT before going to a full sus... this is for me to polish my skills on a HT so that when i decide to go serious, ill get better bike.. FS as a first bike makes you lazy and makes mistakes a lot.. IMHO la.. no offence on this.. based on my own experience owning a NS surge and haro X7.. i actually went faster on the HT than the FS.. hahaha
*
Bro 'Huh?', this is my second 'bike'. My 1st a Giant XC HT. Been making it into something it wasn't meant to be... longer and longer forks and etc. LOL

So I bought a 2ndhand frame and transfer the stuffs over.

Maybe it's just me, but I think riding HT effectively is really an exclusive skill

wat is the highest drop u wanna try? 5.75 inch rear travel is quit alot liau..

unless u intend to go full DH ala PCP DH/formerly bukit cermin, most trail can cover with 5 inches.
since no trail is with lifter, climb uphill is always an issues.

mean i need to wait he send the fork to singjiapo services, and send back to him after setter, and pass back to me on another weekend....if i m not mistaken.

i got asked him about warranty when i get the fox from him that time, he said sure no problem and very confidence with fox product and blablabla ljiao cbet...about the coverage period, he said 3-4 month.

phew, atleast he will take and send in to fix.. now i see the drawback is the time in waiting it get serviced.

i tot he not covering the necessary warranty.

btw, how long does fox fork warranty suppose to be? how this fox warranty works?
no local fox service center seeing this fork is pretty popular here.
if a OEM fork from the bike, do i get to send fox directly or have to via bike manufacturer

angah is trader. in import bis, this is common since he is just importer.
RS/fox all item come with 1 years unless stated.

oem sent back to bike seller; bike seller do same by sent back to his seller.
in this case angah is as same as any bikeshop.
As for turnaround time, it's still same rule applied but subject to way of seller do his stocking.

for bumpy ride, just adjust the rebounce...
5 inch n 6 inch no dif for bumpy ride as it's the rebounce issue not shox travel but 6 inch allow longer slow rebounce state.

else change to 29" wheel or large volume tire.

Or go for the ultimate suspension upgrade. Send ur shox & fork to PUSH for a custom tune. From the reviews I read, they can make a 5" feels bottomless... Hahaha.

I think with all things being equal & stock standard OEM, a longer travel does equates to plusher rides without bottoming out. Unless it's a DHX? From what I read, they have secondary reservoir for ramping up the spring rate and bottom out resistance?

Proride for me, price is the cheapest amongst those I surveyed (change frame). KSH, I did buy some stuffs from them and they help me install for free. Tongyam, wut service u inquire & what is the price quoted?

Alternately, can look for ABC in Sri Damansara area also. Nothing fancy, but as far as bike tune up and installation, it's ok and price also reasonable.

I also prefer DIY, but lacking tools. Maybe I shud bite the bullet and get the toolset? But then, too many things to buy, too little money... Always. LOL

My personal experience with Bikepro, their attitude sucks. Was in the shop for 15mins without a single soul ask me if I'm looking for anything. But when their regular big spender walk in, fuiyoh... macam sibek kamching brother here brother there.

Ask for something, they just point to one corner and ask me to look for it there myself.

That's why I prefer to spend my hard earned cash in shops that value new comers/small spenders. Why shud I give them money when they're not even interested in it.

Whoa! RM10/wheel??? That's cheap!

No experience sending in wheels in need of truing before. Care to share the shop name? Also do they use the spoke tension meter? How long did the wheel stayed true afterwards?

seriously F series for AM? you kidding me? you are going to blow the seals right away at the first drop you hit... fox talas is the one you need for AM/aggressive riding.. F series cant handle it.. it is more of a XC fork..

damn.. it is shocking to know that someone actually suggested that the F series can handle AM.. Fox forks from my experience is very specific with what they are build for.. eg. F series for XC, Float, Talas, Van for AM/light DH, and of course Fox 40 for DH... use any one not intentioned to their purpose just calls for trouble..

luckily you didnt blew the whole fork while going down a rock garden or the dirt drop.. else you will definitely hurt yourself wei.. tak kelakar if you get injured...

really ar?
but according to some DH pros...
they only use ayam headset....
well not so ayam...but RM90/piece headset...

according to them...
normal riders wont even feel the difference between a CK, CC or ayam headset....
except for bling factor...

Hope headset is a reasonable balanced between price and bling!

i only use the Hope steerer cover...

if not wrong ck is 50 years warranty, crank creek 100 years.
both feel same with cap ayam in short term or mild use. but branded is can take more abuse.

price wise, ck n cc is <rm200 dif.

wat model u use? i though is talas?
under now design, <5 shox is xc/am. >6 is am/dh/fr. So a bike's shox already can determine the fork to be used. on AM rider can choose between the fork base on his ball size.

fork pump is std accessories come with bike with air shox.

mm..... yup.... thanks for ur advice... actually here we got a trail that have to ride up really hard (asphalt) then when descend can choose either ordinary road or...

Yoyoyo! Thermal Blaster, sorry if this is abit late, but here's a good read on REIGN being modded into a Mini DH pedaling bike
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=519723

I found it interesting for the rear shox mod... Shortening the eye to eye length without compromising on the travel. This is some serious modding. notworthy.gif

nod.gif Thanks, Im also read this before, they also mod the Trance (5 inch)& Reign 0 (6 inch) to mini DH machine...

But they mention Reign & Reign X easier to mod coz 6 & 6.7 inch rear shox have more option brows.gif

Getting the Reign X, best to avoid the 2010 models for fear of the weak chainstay link IMHO. Just like what the OP said in the thread, it's somewhat 'tuneable' for travel provided it's within the range of the linkage movement I think? As for what's the 'acceptable' range of movement, I guess need to measure the actual frame?

Say if going the custom build way, one can always go for RP23 @ 7.875 x 2.25 instead of the stock 7.875 x 2.0.

6" = 152mm axle travel and a 2.0" shock travel = 50mm

So the leverage ratio is 1:3. In other words, every 1mm of shock movement is equivalent to 3mm of rear axle movement, right?

So putting in a 2.25" (2.25" = 57mm) travel shock should nett almost an additional inch of travel at 6.73" (171mm). Ok la, maybe not 1" but 20mm.

With this mod, the HTA/STA isn't affected at all if the fork remains unchanged in it's travel. But IMHO with this mod, I'd be going for a 180mm travel fork! LOL thumbup.gif

That being said, the above does makes a better & plusher ride going down, but going up is a different story.

So here's another DIY I found...
http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/work...pedal-rp23.html

Specifically on post #13 (http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/workshop/19558-how-do-you-run-your-pro-pedal-rp23.html#post301118)

I'm not sure the validity of the DIY above, but it seems that one can go higher/firmer than #3 propedal setting on the RP23.

By that you can have a super ride, both up and down. Provided u remember to fiddle with the settings/knobs/levers la... wink.gif

Any type of sticker will need a solid surfCe to adhere on if Im not mistaken? The nature of a tire's rubber is to flex. It might 'crack, ur sticker I believe. But then again, no personal experience on this, only hearsay.

Do let us know if it works in the long run, ya?

there is no such sticker for tyre. only possible factory painted graphics.

and why you want to stick a sticker on a used 2nd hand tyre? ride and use it... not show it...
if u wan bling, buy a colored tyre, dont get a cheap used one.

hmm icic.. its not too old tyre. only used less than 70km by my friend. it is kenda plain tyre, n i cant afford to buy schwalbe, maxxis or panaracer tyres since i need to keep some money to buy a new fork, probably rock shox rlt dual air 2011.. so, a slap of sticker to the 'old' kenda tyre would do.

Those temporary tattoo type of stickers? Saw kids using it, after a day or two, it'll crack or rubbed off wan wo? Wow! A RS dual air will get u a lot of tires for the price. I get what you mean, but sorry I don't have a solotion for u.

Added on January 13, 2011, 10:06 pmHmm... What if u trace the sticker (reverse cut the stickers), then spray paint it? Worth a try I guess, if u got the tire cheap enuf.

both. but choose one that matches ur bike (frame) color theme.

but bare in mind, one without visor is better suited for roadie. with visor, mtb

Pacat Trail:-

After rover trail, there is a tamac DH (toward steriod).
mid of tarmac there is a tarmac climb towards water tank, go till end.
take the only route back to off road, end of trail u will see stair.
end of step on top is the pacat trail.

pacat trail will bring u back to road back to steriod.

hamishimi is very nice...
instant shifting no matter conditions...
and the buzzing noise...is very sexay i tell u!

i got it for 2.5k incl installation...

u need to have ISCG05 tabs on ur bike...

Raceface atlas is bling...

Never owned one, but tested a friend's setup once. It's pretty draggy, more than a Nevegal. When running low pressure, it quite squirmish. Grip wise, not that confidence inspiring. The nubs kinda are wobbly.

Wondering what's your thought on the tires?

Never owned one, but tested a friend's setup once. It's pretty draggy, more than a Nevegal. When running low pressure, it quite squirmish. Grip wise, not that confidence inspiring. The nubs kinda are wobbly.
hurmm. i haven't really tried going offroad yet with this tires as i just bought it. seems that it grips well during my light trail at kiara. on road when it's slippery and going steep downhill, it skidded a bit. will try them on XC more this weekend.

stronger as per no scratch. carbon is brittle and will fail faster with scratched resin..

havent found any1 complaining about them yet, so i guess its strong enough laugh.gif

anyways, carbon isnt exactly brittle, and is usually covered in clear coat varnish or lacquer, if the scratches arent deep then its just the varnish layer, should affect strength smile.gif

resin technology improved a lot, and i dont think scratches would cause failure in carbon. no matter what also failure is caused by stress or strain. get 10 speed lor, future proof for at least 5 years laugh.gif

lumut dunno yet. need to upgrade bike alot more before i dare join jamborees or big rides laugh.gif

I did considered the viento before. It's a very good contender for burly HT. According to the online reviews I read, its slightly forgiving and taking out the sting of a solid ht, while being solid and burly enough for AM riding. Can take up to 160mm fork too. Another option is SC Chameleon. Even more solid, abit too solid therefore less forgiving. Also the price is much more expensive. The EBB, good or bad subject to individual I guess.

Again, the above is based on reviews, no actual experience on both.

Hello guys... i'm looking in replacing my old aging wheels

need some suggestion. i have these 2 in my selection,
mavic crossride (650) and fulcrum red metal 5 (600).
the price is about RM50 different

which would be a better wheelset to invest? or is there any other suggestion.

also, anyone using magicshine or bikeray bike light. am interested in getting one. how much and where you guys buying it?
any magicshine user having battery problem as reported by mtbr?

i thinking to try bikeray since they are the OEM for the new gemini titan. so far no reported battery issue with it. honestly speaking both light look very similar.

Magicshine prob? My light can do >2 rounds of 50km jamboree ride with low mode... biggrin.gif

IMO, as for wheelsets, custom wheels are better because if you break the spokes of those two wheels listed, could be troublesome to find the replacement spokes.

FYI, fulcrum RM5 you can get around RM550 from unker Samy.

i thinking to try bikeray since they are the OEM for the new gemini titan. so far no reported battery issue with it. honestly speaking both light look very similar.

just my two cents.when considering wheelsets, you need to check if they suit your riding style as some wheelsets have limits. they will last much longer if they are taken care in this aspect. less maintenance as well. i would go for the fulcrum.you can check with sen aik on F5 as well. i saw a conversation in BBS that said there are some crossrides in our market that are made in romania or hungary.probably those would be better quality.

i had the same magic shine as Ray but mine kaput.guess i am unlucky. cry.gif but luckily under warranty lar...

I'm a FM5 user. Fm5 is rated for xc & am as per their user manual. Not sure bout the cross rides, but from what I heard, it's more towards xc? Also u gotta consider the parts availability, from what I heard from a bike shop, although FM5 is using the aerospokes, it's replaceable with normal spokes. U gotta double checkmwith the sop ur buying to confirm though. Hub noise wise, it's super quiet until u run it in, then it's pretty sweet sounding.

RayKazansky, RM550 sound good. SenAik quote RM600

anyway RM5 or crossride fit my budget ler. i tried to get used wheelset but unknown condition keep haunt me yet only a little cheaper. honestly speaking every time i called up.. sold edi.

snapshots,
I'm more of an XC guy who rides in frim and once a while kiara (consider XC or AM?). so i guess the choice i made are near base on what i read. honestly i dont know whole lot about which wheel are suitable. dont get to try. can only read and ask around you friendly peoples smile.gif

for custom built wheelset, any suggestion? and how much would a decent one roughly cost? where to get quote reasonably?

RayKazansky,
how long have u use magicshine? i tot they suppose rated high mode 2 hour+. anyway where and how much you got urs?

Snapshots,
problem with the head or battery pack?
where and how much you got urs? warrantied a new one already?

Fyi, i'm toying with friend's bikerayII from hk. very bright. looks bout the same brightness with magicshine.

hmn, how much do i need to concern about spoke changing? easy to get spoiled? those spoke do easily get right since they selling the wheels here.
changing normal/other spokes will not look good but might also have reliability issue? i notice the RM5 spoke are slightly different than normal one. they are 2:1 ratio and should be made stronger to offset the lesser spoke count.

i dont really care bout the hub sound la. but i guess with that budget range i cant complaint much. so long i dont break any bones from riding it.

anyway, how ur experience with it. live up to ur abuse?

Well, the spokes are doing well, it's just for the 'oh sh!t moments on long rides where the LBS doesn't have those on hand kinda thing. Well, I heard Shimano's wheel set is selling well and quite established but then still hard to find spoke replacement? That's what I heard from friends oni lar... Best is to ask around amongst your friends and LBS.

I'm no expert and I'm not hardcore like the otai's here, but for me, it's been holding up very well. Kiara, PCP, FRIM, etc.

Another point to note, Crossride is 1900g and the FM5 is 1801g. A saving of 100g rotating mass.

Today very unlucky. Early morning, I drove to kiara... I took the wrong turn heading to KLIA instead. Then, after realizing, I made a turn back to kiara until reached Devi's corner. And realized I forgot my helmet! So, he I am... Playing computer without my ride!

By the way, I think my RD is going to give way soon
